On supported devices, the documented way to limit a child’s TV viewing is through a child’s profile in the Google TV interface—not through a universal Android TV OS setting. Open All settings > Accounts & Profiles > the child’s profile > Screen time > Daily limit, authenticate with the parent’s Google Account PIN or password, then select the days and viewing allowance. Daily limits can be set in 15-minute increments, up to eight hours per day.
Some televisions and streaming devices run Android TV OS without the Google TV interface, and kids profiles are not available on every device or in every region. If you cannot find Screen time, first confirm which interface and software your device uses before trying alternative controls.
First, check whether your device supports the Google TV control
“Android TV” can describe the underlying operating system, while Google TV is an interface and set of features built on that operating system. Google documents daily viewing limits, bedtime schedules, bonus time and profile locks for a child’s profile in Google TV. Those controls should not be presented as a setting found on every Android TV television or streaming player.
Look at the home screen for the Google TV layout and a profile picture or profile switcher. The exact appearance depends on the manufacturer, device model, software version, language and region. A device may run Android TV OS but not provide the Google TV interface, or it may not support kids profiles at all.

- Google TV with a supported kids profile: use the on-TV Screen time menu described below.
- Android TV OS without the Google TV interface: the documented Google TV time controls may not exist. Check the model’s manufacturer support documentation for any separate parental-control feature.
- Google TV menu present but no kids profile option: availability may be restricted by the device or region. Update the device if an update is offered, then check the manufacturer’s support information.
Do not assume that a Family Link setting on a phone will create a daily TV timer. Google separates TV profile controls from Family Link’s activity and app-management functions.
Set a daily viewing limit on Google TV
The limit is attached to the child’s Google TV profile. It does not automatically limit every adult profile on the device.
- From the Google TV home screen, open All settings.
- Select Accounts & Profiles.
- Select the child’s profile.
- Enter the parent’s Google Account PIN or password when prompted.
- Select Screen time > Daily limit.
- Choose the days you want to schedule and the number of hours allowed on each day.
Google documents daily-limit values in 15-minute increments, with a maximum of eight hours per day. You can set different allowances for different days; for example, a shorter school-night allowance and a longer weekend allowance. The available labels can differ with device language or software version, so look for the equivalent of Screen time and Daily limit if the wording is slightly different.
If the child’s profile does not exist
Create the profile before trying to set a limit:
- From the profile picture or the initial Google TV home screen, choose Add account.
- Select Add a kid.
- Follow the on-screen setup instructions.
- Choose which apps the child can use in that profile.
Kids profiles may not be offered on some devices or in some regions. If Add a kid is absent, that is an availability issue rather than a missing step in the timer setup.
Set a bedtime schedule
A daily limit controls the total allowance for a selected day. Bedtime defines the period during which viewing is allowed. Set it from the same child-profile area:

- Go to Accounts & Profiles and select the child’s profile.
- Authenticate with the parent’s Google Account PIN or password.
- Select Screen time > Bedtime.
- Choose the days and the start and end times for the allowed viewing period.
Google documents bedtime schedules in 30-minute intervals. Select the interval that matches your household routine. For example, an evening schedule can stop playback at a chosen time on school nights while leaving a different window for weekends. A bedtime schedule and a daily limit are separate controls, so configure both if you want a maximum total and a no-viewing period.
What happens when the limit is reached?
When the child reaches the scheduled limit or the bedtime window closes, Google TV presents the timeout experience for the child profile. An adult can add temporary access by entering the parent’s Google Account PIN or password and choosing bonus time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGoogle documents bonus-time choices in 15-minute increments, up to eight hours. Treat this as an intentional override for an occasional exception rather than changing the regular schedule. The parent credential is required at the timeout screen, so do not share the PIN if you want the limit to remain enforceable.
Lock the child’s profile so limits cannot be bypassed
A child can only be constrained by the profile settings if the child cannot simply switch to an unrestricted adult profile. Google TV provides a kids-profile lock that requires the adult’s Google Account PIN or password to exit the child’s profile.
Enable the lock from the child’s profile settings when that option is available. Keep the adult credential private, and avoid leaving an adult profile selected when the child starts watching. A profile lock protects profile switching; it does not change the rules inside individual apps.

| Family Link | Family Link tools for the supervised Google account | Monitor app activity on a signed-in Google TV device and block or unblock apps | Google says the TV daily limit, bedtime, bonus time and profile lock must be configured in Google TV, not in Family Link |
Use Family Link when you need to see app activity or prevent access to a particular app. Use the Google TV child-profile menu when you need a viewing schedule or a TV-wide daily allowance for that profile. Setting an app restriction in Family Link does not create the Google TV daily timer.
Choose apps and understand the content restrictions
During kids-profile setup, Google TV lets you choose which apps are included. Review that list periodically because installing or enabling a new app can change what the child can open within the profile.
Kids-profile content restrictions affect Google’s movie and show recommendations and content in Family Library. They do not automatically govern recommendations supplied directly by third-party apps or searches performed inside those apps. Individual apps may offer their own parental controls, age filters, profiles or PIN settings.
- Use the Google TV profile settings for the overall profile, schedule and Google-controlled recommendations.
- Review each included app’s own parental-control options.
- Do not treat a Google TV content setting as a universal filter for every in-app search result.
Why “Screen time” is missing
The most common reason is that the device is not using the Google TV interface or does not support a kids profile. Work through these checks in order.

1. Identify the interface
Return to the home screen and inspect the profile and settings layout. Google TV devices expose Accounts & Profiles and profile-management options in the Google TV settings area. A different Android TV OS interface may use different menus and may not include the documented time controls.
2. Check for a child profile
Open the profile switcher or Accounts & Profiles. If Add a kid is not available, kids profiles may not be supported for that model, software build or region. There is no daily-limit menu to open until a supported child profile exists.
3. Confirm you are in the parent account
Some profile settings are hidden until the parent’s Google Account PIN or password is entered. Select the child’s profile from the account-management screen rather than opening a general display or system settings page.
4. Check software and device documentation
Install any official device update offered by the television or streaming-device manufacturer, restart the device, and check the profile menu again. If the menu is still absent, consult support material for the exact model. Google’s documentation distinguishes Google TV from Android TV OS devices that do not have the Google TV interface, so a generic Android TV guide may not match your hardware.
5. Check language and regional differences
Menu wording can change with language and software version. Search the child-profile settings for terms equivalent to Screen time, Daily limit or Bedtime. Kids-profile availability itself can vary by region, so changing language alone will not enable a feature that is unavailable for the device or account.

Common setup mistakes and fixes
Setting the limit on the wrong profile
A daily limit configured under the child’s profile applies to that profile. If the TV is later switched to an adult profile, the child-profile timer does not serve as a device-wide power cutoff. Turn on the profile lock and start viewing from the child’s profile.
Expecting one limit to cover every app
The schedule governs the Google TV child profile. Apps included in that profile may still have separate account systems and controls. Configure an app’s own parental settings when you need restrictions on in-app search, recommendations or playback behavior.
Using Family Link for a TV bedtime
Family Link can show activity and block or unblock apps, but Google says the TV daily limit and bedtime are set on Google TV. Open the on-TV child-profile menu for those time controls.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Forgetting the parent credential
The PIN or password is required to enter protected settings, add bonus time and leave a locked child profile. Recover access to the parent Google Account through Google’s account-recovery process before changing the schedule. Do not repeatedly guess the credential at the timeout screen.
Assuming recommendations are fully filtered
Google TV’s stated content restrictions cover Google’s movie and show recommendations and Family Library content. Recommendations and search results delivered inside an individual app can fall outside that scope. Apply the app’s own controls as well.
A practical setup checklist
- Confirm that the television or streaming device shows the Google TV interface, not merely Android TV OS.
- Confirm that kids profiles are available for the device and region.
- Create the child profile with Add account > Add a kid if necessary.
- Choose only the apps the child should use.
- Set each day’s allowance under Screen time > Daily limit.
- Set school-night or other no-viewing periods under Screen time > Bedtime.
- Enable the kids-profile lock if you need to prevent switching to an adult profile.
- Keep the parent PIN or password private.
- Review the parental controls inside each included app.
- Test the profile switcher and timeout behavior while you are present, before relying on the schedule.
How to choose between a daily limit and bedtime
Use a daily limit when the priority is total viewing time. It allows viewing at flexible times until the allowance is consumed. Use bedtime when the priority is a fixed schedule, such as no TV after a particular evening time. Families that need both a maximum amount and a fixed stop time should configure both controls on the child’s profile.
Because the documented maximum is eight hours per day, Google TV’s setting is a profile allowance rather than a general household power timer. It is designed to govern the child’s Google TV experience while preserving separate adult profiles and account controls.

What the Google TV limit does not do
- It does not create a universal timer on every device running Android TV OS.
- It does not automatically restrict adult profiles.
- It does not replace parental controls built into individual apps.
- It does not guarantee that recommendations or searches supplied by apps follow Google TV’s content restrictions.
- It does not allow Family Link to configure the TV’s daily limit or bedtime; those settings remain on Google TV.
If your device lacks Google TV and a supported kids profile, the correct next step is model-specific manufacturer guidance rather than trying to force the Google TV menu path. The availability distinction is the key to diagnosing why the setting is missing.
