Use the built-in controls: on an iPhone, go to Settings > Screen Time > Time Allowances and limit the Social Media category; on Android, go to Settings > Digital Wellbeing > App timers and set a timer for each social-media app. For a child, use Apple Family Sharing and Screen Time or Google Family Link rather than a personal timer. The exact controls depend on whether you are managing your own phone or someone else’s, the operating-system version, and whether social-media use happens in an app or a browser.
Choose the right control before you start
A personal screen-time timer is a local reminder and enforcement setting. It is not the same as parental supervision: another person who knows the device passcode can often change a personal limit. A child account managed through Family Sharing or Family Link gives a parent or guardian a separate management path.

The platform controls are free and built into the phone. You do not need a new device or a separate subscription to create an app-specific limit.

Apple’s current iPhone user guide places category controls under Time Allowances. The current interface described here is for iOS 27 or later. Apple’s instructions are in its iPhone User Guide.

Turn on Screen Time and App & Website Activity
- Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Use the available setup option to turn on Screen Time and enable App & Website Activity. This allows the phone to record usage and apply allowances.
- Return to the Screen Time page after setup. If the phone asks you to create a Screen Time passcode, choose one that is different from the device-unlock code if you want the limit to be harder to change.
Limit the Social Media category
- Open Settings > Screen Time > Time Allowances.
- Adjust the device-wide daily amount if you want one total for all covered activity, or select the Social Media category and set its allowance.
- Save the allowance. The limit is applied each day according to the configured Screen Time rules.
The category route is useful when several social apps should share one budget. Apple determines which installed apps belong to the category. Review the category list shown on your phone so you know what is included instead of assuming that every social service is classified identically.
Apple says that when a declared associated website exists, the allowance also applies to that website. This can extend a category allowance beyond the native app, but it does not mean every possible web address is automatically covered.
Create time windows with a Screen Time Schedule
A daily allowance answers “how long?” A schedule answers “when?” On iOS 27 or later:
- Go to Settings > Screen Time > Screen Time Schedule.
- Turn on Schedule and tap Add Schedule.
- Choose the days and the start and end times during which the selected categories are available.
- Set the Time Allowances to match the schedule if you want both a time-of-day window and a maximum duration.
For example, a schedule can keep social apps unavailable during a chosen evening period while the allowance limits the total time on permitted days. Use the allowance alone when you only need a daily quota.

iPhone version and family-device requirements
Apple’s new Screen Time Schedules and Time Allowances experience requires iOS 27 or later on the relevant Apple devices. In a family setup, Apple says the family devices need to be updated for the new controls. Devices that cannot update continue using the previous Screen Time experience, so the labels and available controls may not match the steps above.
Manage a child’s iPhone with Family Sharing
Do not use your child’s phone as though it were your own Screen Time profile. Apple’s parental flow uses Family Sharing, a separate Apple Account for each family member, and a parent-controlled Screen Time passcode. Apple’s parental Screen Time guidance explains the account and software requirements.
Prepare the family group
- Set up Family Sharing with the family organizer or a parent/guardian account.
- Make sure the child uses their own Apple Account. Apple describes a child account for a child rather than sharing an adult’s login.
- Keep the family devices on compatible software when possible. If every device cannot update, Apple keeps the previous Screen Time version available.
Open the child’s Screen Time controls
- On the parent or guardian’s iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap Family, select the child’s name, and tap Screen Time.
- Use Time Allowances to set a category allowance, including Social Media, or configure a daily amount.
- Use Screen Time Schedule to choose days and time windows. Set a Screen Time passcode that the child does not know.
The parent’s device is the management point. A child who can freely change the Screen Time passcode can also change the limit, so keep that passcode separate from the child’s device passcode and do not reuse an easily guessed family code.
When an iPhone family limit does not behave as expected
- Different labels: check the iOS version on both the parent and child devices. The iOS 27 interface and the previous Screen Time interface are not identical.
- Controls missing across the family: update the relevant devices when possible; Apple requires the new schedule and allowance experience on the devices involved.
- Web use continues: verify whether Apple has an associated website for the relevant category or service. A category allowance should not be treated as a universal filter for every website.
Set app timers for yourself on Android
Android’s Digital Wellbeing model is app-by-app rather than one Social Media category. Google’s instructions are in Manage how you spend time on your Android phone with Digital Wellbeing. Menu names and their location can vary by device manufacturer and Android version.

Set a timer for each social app
- Open Settings and tap Digital Wellbeing (the label may include “parental controls” on some phones).
- Tap App timers.
- Find a social-media app and tap Set timer beside it.
- Choose the daily duration and tap OK.
- Repeat for every app you want to limit. A timer on one app does not create a shared quota for other social apps.
At the limit, Google says the timer closes the app and dims its icon. The timer resets at midnight. Google also documents that you can remove the timer before midnight to allow use again, so a personal timer is not tamper-proof.
Make a personal limit harder to change
Digital Wellbeing includes an App limits PIN option on supported devices. Turn it on from the Digital Wellbeing controls and choose a PIN that is not the phone-unlock code. Google documents a zero-minute setting as a way to block an app completely. This PIN is a local control on that phone; it is not remote parent supervision and does not manage another device.
Android account and device caveats
- Google warns that some work or school accounts may not support app timers.
- Settings paths differ among Android manufacturers, so search Settings for “Digital Wellbeing” or “App timers” if the menu is not in the expected location.
- If a social service is used through a browser, an app timer may not cover the website. Google’s Digital Wellbeing guidance also describes separate Chrome site timers; configure those when browser use is part of the problem.
Manage a child’s Android phone with Family Link
Family Link separates a child’s controls from the child’s own Digital Wellbeing page. Install or open the Family Link app on the parent’s device, then select the child. Google’s instructions are in Manage your child’s Google Play apps and Get started with Family Link.

Set an individual app limit
- Open Family Link and select the child.
- Tap Screen time, then Time limits, then App limits.
- Select the social-media app.
- Enter the permitted hours and minutes, then save.
Repeat the process for each app that needs its own limit. Family Link also provides a separate daily limit and schedules, so decide whether the child needs a per-app rule, a total daily rule, a time-of-day rule, or a combination.

Use daily limits and schedules deliberately
A per-app limit prevents one selected app from consuming more than its allowance. A daily limit covers the child’s use under Family Link’s supported device rules. A schedule can make the device unavailable during selected periods. Keep these settings conceptually separate: changing an app limit does not automatically change the daily limit or the schedule.
Understand multiple-device behavior
Google says daily limits apply separately to each Android device or Chromebook the child uses. If a child has two managed devices, the available daily time can therefore be available on each device rather than being one shared pool. Check every enrolled device when the goal is a family-wide total.
Family Link also has “Unlimited time” app controls. Google documents Android 7 or later eligibility, with an exception for devices running Google Kids Space. Device and Android-version differences can affect which apps qualify, so review the option shown for the child’s device rather than assuming every app can be made unlimited.

App limits versus schedules: choose the combination

Account for browser and alternate-device access
Limiting an installed app does not automatically mean that every route to the same service is limited. A person may open a social network in Safari, Chrome or another browser, or use a second phone, tablet or Chromebook.

On iPhone
Apple states that an allowance can apply to a declared associated website. Check the category and website behavior shown in Screen Time rather than assuming that every domain is covered. If the service is not represented by the relevant category or associated website, the allowance may not address that browser route.
On Android
Use Google’s separate Chrome site-timer instructions when social-media browsing occurs on the web. An Android app timer applies to the selected installed app; it is not a universal web filter. For a child, also review every device enrolled in Family Link because the daily-limit accounting is per device.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The limit never appears
- On iPhone, confirm that Screen Time and App & Website Activity are enabled and that you are editing the correct person under Family Sharing.
- On Android, confirm that you selected Set timer for the specific app and saved the duration.
- If the Android phone uses a work or school account, the account may not support app timers.
The app still opens after the limit
- On Android, check whether the timer was removed before midnight; Google allows a timer to be removed before its reset.
- Check for a browser version of the service and configure a Chrome site timer if necessary.
- On an iPhone family account, verify that the child is using the Apple Account and device connected to the family Screen Time controls.
The child gets more time than intended
- On Android, inspect every phone, tablet and Chromebook managed by Family Link because daily limits are separate for each device.
- Review “Unlimited time” app choices and Android-version eligibility before treating an app as unrestricted.
- On iPhone, check whether family devices use the same Screen Time generation; iOS 27 schedule and allowance features require compatible updates.
The social-media category does not match expectations
On iPhone, category membership is determined by Apple and may not match a personal list of “social” apps. Inspect the apps represented in Screen Time and use the available allowance or schedule controls accordingly. On Android, avoid the category assumption altogether: set a timer for each relevant app.

- Decide whether you are managing yourself or a child.
- List the apps and browser routes that actually need a limit.
- Choose a daily allowance, a time window, or both.
- Use the iPhone Social Media category where it accurately represents the apps you want to group.
- Use separate Android app timers for each selected app.
- For children, use Family Sharing or Family Link and keep the parent control separate from the child’s unlock credentials.
- Check other devices and browsers before assuming the limit is comprehensive.
- After the first day, review the Screen Time or Digital Wellbeing report and adjust only the settings that failed to address the intended route.
What to remember
iPhone and Android both provide built-in screen-time controls, but they organize them differently. iPhone’s current iOS 27 guide uses category-level Time Allowances and schedules, including Social Media. Android Digital Wellbeing uses an individual timer for each app, with a midnight reset and an optional local App limits PIN. Parents should configure Family Sharing on iPhone or Family Link on Android, then check version, account, browser and multi-device limitations before relying on the result.
