The reliable way to control a child’s console is to configure the child’s account or family membership first, then set play-time rules and spending controls separately. PlayStation uses a child account in a family group, Xbox uses a Microsoft family group, and Nintendo splits controls between the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app and the parent’s Nintendo Account.

Choose the instructions for the exact console generation and account region. Menu labels and available features can change, and a play-time limit does not automatically block purchases.

Which account and app controls the console?

Before changing a timer or spending limit, identify the adult account that has authority and the account the child actually uses to play. A parent who changes settings on the wrong profile can leave the child’s account unrestricted while making the adult account inconvenient to use.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 Parent’s Nintendo Account, the console and the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on iOS or Android. Parent’s Nintendo Account profile settings in a web browser, not the console or smart-device app. Most parental-control options are system-wide, so the same console restrictions can affect every user.

Nintendo’s system-wide behavior is the main cross-platform difference. PlayStation and Xbox describe their limits around a child account or family member, while Nintendo says most controls on a shared console apply to everyone who uses it.

Set limits on PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4

Check the required family roles

Every child must have a separate child account in the PlayStation family group. The adult changing settings must be the family manager or an appointed parent or guardian. If the child plays on a profile that is not in the family, PlayStation’s child play-time and spending controls will not target that profile.

Configure play time on a PS5

  1. Sign in with the family manager or appointed parent/guardian account.
  2. Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
  3. Select the child’s account. Set the correct time zone before configuring a schedule.
  4. Choose Playtime Settings.
  5. Turn play-time limits on, then set playable hours and the permitted duration for each day. You can configure individual days rather than using one identical rule for the whole week.
  6. Save the settings and repeat the process for any other child account.

PlayStation separates a day’s playable window from the amount of time allowed in that window. For example, you can permit play only after school and still cap the total duration for that day. The child receives a warning as the limit approaches.

When the time expires, choose the behavior that fits your household: notification-only, which warns the child but leaves the session running, or logout, which signs the child out when the limit is reached. A parent can grant additional time or respond to a request when a child needs an exception.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The limits follow the child account, so a child who uses both a PS5 and a PS4 is covered on both consoles. Check that the child is not switching to an adult or unlisted local profile to avoid the rule.

Set a monthly spending limit

Play-time controls do not control the PlayStation Store. Spending is a separate, monthly limit on the child account.

  1. On the PS5, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
  2. Select the child.
  3. Choose Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit.
  4. Enter the amount and save it.

You can also use the online route: open Account Management > Family Management, select the child, choose Edit, and set Monthly Spending Limit. Purchases made by the child draw from the family manager’s wallet.

Sony sets the default monthly limit to 0. Leave it at 0 if the child should not spend from the family wallet; change it only when you intentionally want to permit a defined monthly amount. The limit is account-based and monthly, not a one-time allowance for a particular game.

Set limits on an Xbox console

Create the Microsoft family relationship first

Add the child to a Microsoft family group and add the adult as a parent. The Xbox Family Settings app and Microsoft’s family website are the management channels described by Microsoft. Only a parent in that family group can change a child’s Xbox privacy and online settings.

Set daily Xbox schedules and hours in the app

  1. Open the Microsoft Family Safety app and select the child.
  2. Choose Windows/Xbox.
  3. Set the amount of time allowed for the device.
  4. Select a day to configure its time range and total hours. Repeat for each day that needs a different school-night, weekend or holiday rule.
  5. Save the schedule and verify that the child is using the Microsoft account shown in the family group.

The website provides an alternative path. Go to account.microsoft.com/family, select the child, choose Xbox, and set or edit limits by day. The exact controls shown can vary with the account and current Microsoft Family Safety version.

Xbox counts time while the child is signed in. Ask the child to sign out when finished rather than leaving the account active on an idle console. This matters when a family shares one Xbox or when the console remains powered on after play.

Limit a specific game or app

Use the child’s app or game controls in Family Safety to choose an individual title, set an allowed amount of time, and define the hours when it may be used. Microsoft says these limits can extend across connected Windows, Xbox and Android devices through the family group. Check the platform options displayed in the current app before assuming that a rule covers every device the child owns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Device schedules and individual-title limits solve different problems. A device rule caps Xbox use generally; a game or app rule can give one title a shorter allowance while leaving homework tools or other approved apps available.

Require approval for purchases

Turn on Xbox’s Ask a Parent behavior for the child. When the child tries to buy a game or app, the parent receives an email and must provide help to fund or approve the purchase. This is an approval workflow rather than a promise that every in-game transaction is blocked in every title, so review the purchase prompt and account settings shown in your region.

If the child uses the parent’s own Xbox account, create a passkey to restrict purchases made from that adult account. The safer arrangement is still to keep the child on a child account and reserve the adult account for the parent; a passkey protects the adult profile but does not replace family-group settings.

Set limits on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2

Use the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app for play time

Nintendo identifies its free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app for iOS and Android as the most extensive control point for both Switch 2 and the original Switch. The app requires an internet connection to work with the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on the parent’s iPhone, iPad or Android device.
  2. Sign in with the parent’s Nintendo Account and link the app to the intended Switch or Switch 2.
  3. Set a daily play-time limit.
  4. Set bedtime and morning start times if play should stop overnight or begin only after a particular hour.
  5. Save the rules and check the app’s activity report to see which games were played and for how long.

The activity view helps you adjust a rule based on actual use rather than guessing. A bedtime window and a daily duration are separate controls: one defines when play may occur, while the other limits the total time for the day.

Restrict Nintendo purchases in a browser

Nintendo’s FAQ places purchase restrictions in the parent’s Nintendo Account profile settings. Open the account settings in a web browser and configure the purchase restriction there; Nintendo says this is not set on the console or in the smart-device parental-controls app.

Make sure the child is using the supervised or child Nintendo Account that belongs to the parent’s family group. If a purchase is attempted from another Nintendo Account, the restriction attached to the parent’s profile may not apply to that transaction.

Understand the shared-console limitation

Most Nintendo parental-control options are system-wide. On a shared Switch or Switch 2, a play-time or bedtime rule can affect adults and other children who use that console, not only the intended child. If several people share one device, agree on exceptions before enabling a strict schedule and check the account settings for any additional per-user options available in your region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switch 2 owners with children under 16 or supervised users should also configure GameChat controls in the app before communication features are used. The app can manage allowed chat friends, video-chat requests and GameChat history; these communication settings are separate from the play-time and purchase controls described above.

How the platforms differ at the limit

Question PlayStation Xbox Nintendo Switch/Switch 2
Can I set both a schedule and a daily duration? Yes. Playable hours and a duration can be set by day. Yes. Set time ranges and total hours by day and device. Yes. The app provides daily limits plus bedtime and morning start times.
What happens when time runs out? Choose notification-only or logout; a parent can grant more time or answer a request. The schedule counts while the child is signed in; sign out when finished to avoid unintended counted time. The app enforces the configured play-time and bedtime rules on the linked console.
Can I limit one game? The documented controls center on the child account’s play time. Yes. Individual game and app limits are available and may span connected devices. The documented app controls are console-oriented; check the options shown for the linked console and region.
How are purchases controlled? Monthly spending limit; the default is 0 and purchases use the family manager’s wallet. Ask a Parent approval for a child’s purchase; a passkey can protect the parent’s account. Purchase restrictions are set in the parent’s Nintendo Account profile settings in a browser.
Who is affected? The selected child account, including when it uses PS5 and PS4. The selected family member, with some app/game rules extending to connected devices. Most console restrictions affect everyone using the shared console.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

The option is missing

  • PlayStation: confirm that the adult is the family manager or an appointed parent/guardian and that the child has a separate child account.
  • Xbox: confirm that the adult is listed as a parent in the Microsoft family group. A regular adult member cannot change a child’s privacy and online settings.
  • Nintendo: use the parent’s Nintendo Account for purchase settings and the linked Parental Controls app for time settings; neither control is necessarily on the console’s ordinary settings screen.

The schedule uses the wrong time

On PlayStation, set the child’s time zone before saving Playtime Settings. On every platform, check the console, account and phone date/time settings when a bedtime appears to start early or late. Region-specific menus and feature availability can differ.

The child still has access after the limit

  • Check which account is signed in. An adult or unlisted local profile will not inherit a child-account rule.
  • On Xbox, sign out of the child’s account when play stops; counted time is tied to the signed-in session.
  • On Nintendo, check whether the rule is affecting the linked console rather than a particular user, and verify that the app still shows the correct console connection.
  • On PlayStation, confirm whether the selected end behavior is notification-only. A notification does not log the child out.

A purchase went through unexpectedly

  • On PlayStation, verify the child’s monthly limit and remember that the default is 0 only until it is changed.
  • On Xbox, check that the purchase was attempted from the child’s family account and that Ask a Parent is enabled. Purchases made from the parent’s account are governed by the passkey, not the child’s approval workflow.
  • On Nintendo, revisit the parent’s Nintendo Account profile settings in a browser and confirm which Nintendo Account was used for the transaction.

A practical setup checklist

  1. Update the console, phone app and account recovery details before configuring restrictions.
  2. Create or verify the child account and family relationship.
  3. Set the correct time zone and decide on school-night, weekend and holiday schedules.
  4. Choose a daily duration as well as allowable hours where the platform supports both.
  5. Decide what should happen at the limit: warning, logout, or a bedtime stop.
  6. Configure spending separately, using a zero or approval-based arrangement if the child should not buy independently.
  7. Test the rules with the child account while an adult is present. Confirm the warning, cutoff and purchase prompt rather than assuming the setting saved correctly.
  8. Review activity and purchase notifications periodically, especially after a console, phone or account-region change.

Official support pages accessed on 13 October 2026 note that menu names, apps and feature availability can change. If a path differs on your console, use the current PlayStation Support, Microsoft/Xbox Family Safety or Nintendo Support instructions for the same console generation and account region.
