Set a fee ceiling before you send a Lightning payment, and treat it as an authorization limit—not a guaranteed quote or a universal “safe rate.” In LND, you can cap routing fees in satoshis, millisatoshis, or (in the CLI) as a percentage of the payment. Pick the highest amount you are genuinely willing to spend, use only the control your wallet and software version document, and remember that a higher ceiling can allow more routes but cannot guarantee delivery.
What a Lightning fee limit actually controls
A Lightning payment can travel directly through a channel to the recipient or through several forwarding nodes. Each forwarding node may charge a routing fee. The fee limit discussed in a payer’s payment request places a maximum on those forwarding fees for that one payment.
It does not set a Bitcoin miner fee, change the cost of opening or closing a channel, or alter on-chain commitment transactions. Channel-management and close transactions use a separate on-chain fee mechanism. Raising or lowering a payment routing cap therefore does not change what a channel close costs later.
One-hop and multi-hop routes
If your node has a usable channel directly to the recipient, the route may contain one forwarding hop. If not, the payment can cross multiple channels. Every forwarding hop can contribute to the total fee, so a route with more hops is not automatically expensive, and a short route is not automatically available.

Base and proportional components
Forwarding policies generally combine two components:
- Base fee: a fixed amount charged for each forwarded HTLC.
- Proportional fee: a rate applied to the amount being forwarded.
A small payment can be affected mainly by the fixed base component. A larger payment can accumulate more from the proportional component. Multi-part payments (MPP) split one payment across several routes to work around capacity bottlenecks, but each constituent path can add its own base fee.
Why there is no universally safe number
A fee ceiling is a personal spending decision, not a protocol-wide recommendation. The appropriate maximum depends on the payment amount, how urgently it must arrive, whether you can retry, and how much failed-attempt friction you will tolerate. The available routes also change as nodes update policies and liquidity shifts.
Lightning does not reveal every channel’s balance. A route can look plausible from advertised information yet fail because a channel lacks enough balance in the required direction. The LND Builder’s Guide describes lack of knowledge about node balances as the primary reason payments fail. Increasing a cap can admit additional fee-qualified routes, but it cannot create liquidity or guarantee success.
A cap is not a quote
The cap says “do not pay more than this routing-fee amount if the payment succeeds.” It does not promise that you will pay that amount, and it is not necessarily the wallet’s estimate. A wallet may show an estimate, a maximum, an attempted route, or no fee preview at all. Treat any displayed value according to the label and documentation of that wallet rather than assuming it is an exact final charge.

Choose between a fixed and percentage ceiling
Use the unit that matches how you think about the cost. A fixed cap is easiest to understand as a hard satoshi budget. A percentage cap scales with the payment, but the resulting absolute allowance grows as the payment grows.

How the same percentage changes the amount
These are arithmetic examples, not recommendations. A 1% ceiling on a 1,000-sat payment permits up to 10 sats of routing fee. The same 1% ceiling on a 100,000-sat payment permits up to 1,000 sats. If your budget is “never more than 20 sats,” a fixed 20-sat limit expresses that rule more directly than a percentage.
For a small payment, first ask whether the fixed base fees on the likely route already consume a material part of the amount. For a large payment, check the absolute satoshi result of any percentage setting before authorizing it. Do not compare arbitrary percentages as though one were a Lightning standard; they are simply different budget policies.
Set the limit in LND
The following controls are documented for LND and are version-sensitive. Other wallet applications may expose different labels, defaults, units, or no user-set cap at all. Verify the installed version and the exact interface you are calling.
SendPaymentV2 API fields
LND’s current SendPaymentV2 API documents fee_limit_sat and fee_limit_msat. They are mutually exclusive: provide one unit field, not both. The value is the maximum routing fee permitted for that payment.

}The invoice placeholder above represents the invoice you already received; replace it with the real invoice in your integration. If your application uses millisatoshis, use the msat field instead and convert your budget deliberately. Do not populate both fields to express the same limit.

LND documents a zero fee limit as allowing only zero-fee routes. That is a very restrictive condition. If no qualifying zero-fee route exists, the payment will not find a route even when a route with a small positive fee would otherwise work.
CLI options
The LND command-line help documents --fee_limit as a maximum in satoshis and --fee_limit_percent as a maximum percentage of the payment amount. Use the option names and syntax shown by the lncli binary installed on your node:
lncli sendpayment --fee_limit=25 <other documented payment arguments>
lncli sendpayment --fee_limit_percent=1 <other documented payment arguments>These examples illustrate the two alternative controls; they are not a complete command for every LND release. Check lncli sendpayment --help for the required invoice or payment arguments and for release-specific syntax. Do not combine the fixed and percentage limit options unless your installed documentation explicitly says that combination is supported.
Do not assume an omitted limit is safe
The current SendPaymentV2 reference cautions callers to set a fee limit and documents a default routing fee limit of zero. Older SendPayment documentation describes a different legacy default: 100% for payments of 1,000 sats or less and 5% for payments above 1,000 sats when no limit is specified. Those figures belong to that older API documentation and are not a universal LND or wallet policy. An integration should set the field explicitly and test the behavior of its exact version rather than relying on an omitted-value default.

A practical procedure before you press Send
- Identify the actual payment interface. Determine whether you are using a consumer wallet, an LND REST or RPC integration, or the
lnclicommand. Record the software version. A control documented for LND should not be copied into another wallet’s settings without confirmation. - Define the budget in the unit you understand. Decide the maximum routing fee in sats or, if your system requires it, msats. If you prefer a percentage, calculate the resulting absolute maximum for this invoice amount.
- Set exactly one LND limit field. For SendPaymentV2, choose
fee_limit_satorfee_limit_msat, not both. For the CLI, choose the documented fixed-satoshi or percentage option. - Inspect whatever estimate or route detail the wallet provides. If the displayed or attempted fee is above your ceiling, stop and choose whether to wait, use another supported payment method, or try again later. Not every wallet provides an exact pre-send quote.
- Authorize the attempt. A successful payment should stay at or below the configured routing-fee maximum. The cap does not include unrelated on-chain costs.
- Record the result for recurring payments. Note the payment amount, permitted fee, actual fee if shown, and whether the attempt required retries. Repeated observations help you tune a budget for your own routes; they do not establish a universal rate for everyone.
Balance cost control against route availability
When a low cap causes failure
If the cap is below the fee of every currently usable route, path finding can fail before a payment is delivered. A route can also fail despite fitting the cap when a channel lacks directional liquidity. The practical response is to decide whether the payment is worth another attempt at a higher ceiling, a different route source, a later time, or another payment rail.
Why raising the cap is not a guarantee
A higher limit authorizes more spending; it does not reserve liquidity. It may make additional advertised routes eligible, but forwarding nodes can still reject or fail the payment because of balance, policy, timeout, or transient conditions. Do not treat a successful retry after raising a cap as proof that the higher fee was required by the protocol; it may simply have selected a different route at that moment.
Retries need a stopping rule
Set a maximum number of attempts or a total budget for an automated sender. Otherwise, repeatedly increasing the cap can turn a small payment problem into an unbounded spending decision. For a time-sensitive payment, define in advance the highest ceiling you will permit and the point at which you will stop retrying.

MPP can improve the chance of completing a payment by dividing it among multiple paths when no single channel can carry the entire amount. The trade-off is that each path may incur a base fee. A split that solves a capacity problem can therefore cost more in aggregate than one successful single-path payment.

When reviewing a fee estimate or payment result, ask whether the payment was split. Compare the total routing fee with your cap, not just the proportional rate of one part. If your wallet does not expose the split or route details, use the wallet’s documented total-fee value and avoid assuming that a displayed per-part figure is the complete cost.

Using route probes in an LND integration
LND documents probes as an implementation technique for testing a route and giving users more accurate fee information before attempting the real payment. A probe is not a generic guarantee that every consumer wallet can provide a firm quote.
Probes have limitations. The documentation notes that probing can limit the use of multi-part payments, and forwarding nodes are not compensated for the probe. An integrator should therefore treat the result as information for a subsequent decision, not as a reservation of liquidity or a promise that the final payment will follow the same route.
Troubleshoot a rejected or unexpectedly expensive payment

Do not confuse sender limits with node fee policies
This article concerns the fee a payer authorizes for a payment. A routing-node operator has a different setting: the forwarding fee policy advertised for that operator’s channels.
In LND, operators configure per-channel base and proportional policies through lnd.conf, lncli openchannel, or lncli updatechanpolicy. The lncli feereport command reports policies and fee earnings. Those controls determine what the node charges other senders; they do not set the maximum fee you, as a payer, will accept on your own outgoing payment.
Operator policy is a liquidity trade-off. Fees set too high can discourage traffic, while fees set too low can deplete channel liquidity quickly. Changing a node’s forwarding policy is therefore an operational decision and should not be presented as a way to cap your personal payment cost.
A repeatable policy for everyday payments
- Choose a fixed satoshi ceiling when your priority is a hard maximum amount.
- Choose a percentage only when scaling with payment size is genuinely useful, and inspect its absolute satoshi result each time.
- Use one LND unit field and make the unit explicit in application code and logs.
- Never treat zero as “free if possible”; in LND it excludes every positive-fee route.
- Expect route failure even under the cap because channel balances are private and directional.
- For MPP, judge the total fee across all parts, including repeated base fees.
- Define retry and escalation limits before automation sends payments.
- Keep routing fees separate from on-chain channel and closing costs.
- Recheck wallet labels, defaults, and capabilities after software upgrades.
The safest ceiling is the one that reflects your own maximum acceptable routing spend for this payment while leaving you prepared for a failed attempt. LND provides the controls, but neither LND nor the Lightning protocol defines one fee limit that is safe for every amount, route, wallet, or situation.
