The quickest setup is the same on most services: find the correct ticker, choose either a dollar price or percentage decline, select where the notification should arrive, and test the alert below the current quote. TradingView is the most flexible choice for watchlists, technical conditions, and fundamental thresholds; Yahoo Finance is the simplest route to a mobile target-price push; Fidelity is convenient if you already use its brokerage account.
An alert is a prompt to review price, earnings, guidance, inventory, valuation, or news. It is not an automatic buy order. Permissions, market-session settings, quote timing, corporate actions, and expiration rules determine whether a notification arrives when you expect it.
What a price-drop alert does
A price-drop alert watches a selected security and notifies you when a condition is met. The condition can be an absolute level, such as a semiconductor stock falling below $100, or a relative move, such as declining 5% from the previous close. Depending on the service, you can also combine price with technical indicators, chart patterns, watchlists, or fundamental metrics.

Alerts are monitoring rules, not execution instructions. A notification may arrive during a volatile move, before all information is available, or after the price has moved through your level. Treat it as a cue to check the quote, trading session, filings, earnings guidance, and your own plan before taking action.

Choose the right trigger before creating an alert
Absolute-price alerts
Use an absolute price when a specific level matters to your process: a valuation checkpoint, a planned review price, or a level at which you want to examine earnings and guidance. Enter a value below the current quote for a downside alert and verify whether the service triggers when price merely touches the level or when it crosses it.
Absolute prices do not automatically account for different share prices. A $10 move has very different significance for a $50 stock and a $500 stock, so pair a dollar alert with a percentage or volatility-aware rule when comparing companies.
Percentage-drop alerts
Use a percentage trigger when you follow companies with widely different share prices. A 5% decline measures the same relative move for a high-priced chip designer and a lower-priced equipment supplier. Confirm the reference period: many services calculate the change from the previous close, while an intraday rule may use a moving or session-specific reference.

A watchlist rule is useful for a basket of technology and semiconductor names. TradingView states that a watchlist alert applies the same condition independently to each symbol, so one rule can monitor multiple tickers. The condition is still evaluated separately; a notification for one company does not mean every company in the list moved.
Technical and fundamental conditions
When a price move needs context, add a technical or fundamental condition. TradingView documents crossing, greater-than, less-than, channel, and moving-percentage operators for technical alerts, plus metrics such as price-to-earnings ratio and market capitalization. These rules are more selective but require you to understand the indicator, its calculation timing, and the data refresh interval.

Set up any price-drop alert in five steps
- Find the exact symbol. Search the quote or chart area for the exchange-listed ticker. Check the company name, exchange, share class, and currency before saving the rule. Similar symbols can represent different securities or listings.
- Choose the trigger type. Select an absolute price for a specific review level or a percentage decline for a comparable move across companies. If the service offers both, you can create one of each for the same stock.
- Enter the threshold and reference. For a dollar alert, enter the level below the current quote. For a percentage alert, specify the decline and confirm whether the baseline is the previous close, the current session, or a moving value.
- Select delivery. Enable app push, email, desktop notification, sound, text, or webhook as appropriate. A webhook requires a receiving service; a push alert requires permission on the phone and for the app.
- Test and inspect the rule. Temporarily use a level clearly below the current quote, save it, and confirm that the alert appears as active. Review whether it is recurring, expires after one trigger, or is removed when triggered. Restore your intended threshold after testing.
TradingView: the broadest alert setup
Create a basic price or percentage alert
- Search for the technology or semiconductor ticker and open its chart.
- Choose the alert control, then select a price condition or percentage-movement condition.
- Set the operator, such as crossing, greater than, or less than, and enter the level or percentage.
- Choose the expiration behavior and notification channels. TradingView documents app, desktop, email, webhook, sound, and plain-text notifications.
- Save the alert and check the alerts panel to confirm the symbol, condition, frequency, and expiration.
TradingView’s official documentation describes a price alert as triggering when a symbol’s price “reaches a certain level” or “exceeds or falls below a certain level.” Standard alerts have a maximum two-month lifetime. Premium and Ultimate plans offer an open-ended option, so check the expiration field rather than assuming a rule will run indefinitely.
Monitor a semiconductor watchlist
Create a list containing the chip businesses you actually follow: for example, a chip designer, foundry, memory maker, equipment supplier, and diversified technology company. Apply a percentage-drop watchlist alert for broad monitoring. Because the same condition is evaluated independently for each symbol, each notification identifies the company that met the threshold.

Use a technical rule when the decline matters only after a chart condition, such as crossing a moving average or leaving a channel. Use a fundamental rule when you want to review a valuation threshold such as P/E or market capitalization. Avoid stacking conditions you cannot explain; a complex rule is harder to audit when a fast market move occurs.
TradingView cautions that fundamental alerts can be temporarily inaccurate for a few hours after rapid earnings-related price changes. If an alert arrives immediately after an earnings release, verify the underlying financial value later rather than acting on the first notification.
Yahoo Finance: set a mobile target-price alert
- Sign in and add the technology or semiconductor stock to your followed list.
- Open the stock’s quote page and choose the custom price-alert option.
- Enter the target price or select a significant-price-change alert, then save it.
- Allow notifications for the Yahoo Finance app in the phone’s operating-system settings and inside the app.
- Check the site or app notification area to verify that the rule is listed.
Yahoo’s Android help states that when the target is met, a push notification is sent to the device. The exact custom-alert path differs slightly between Android and iOS, so use the label shown in your version of the app. If no notification arrives, confirm that you are signed in to the intended account and that the device has not disabled background or push notifications.

Fidelity: alerts inside a brokerage workflow
- Open the alerts area in Fidelity’s website, mobile app, or trading tools and select the security.
- Choose an above- or below-target price condition, or a percentage change since the previous close.
- Confirm the instrument type. Fidelity documents price alerts for stocks, ETFs, options, and mutual funds.
- Select Message Center, desktop pop-up or sound, and mobile push delivery as available in your interface.
- Save the alert and review its status in the alerts list.
Fidelity’s help states: “You may set Price Alerts on stocks, ETFs, options, and mutual funds.” Interface labels can change; the older Active Trader Pro help page may not reflect every current web or mobile detail. If a control is missing, check the current alerts area rather than assuming the instrument is unsupported.

Separate broad monitoring from decision levels
Use one percentage alert to identify unusual weakness across a group, then add absolute-price alerts at levels where you will review earnings, guidance, inventory, demand, or valuation. This prevents a single arbitrary dollar price from producing unequal signals across companies with different share prices.
Label every rule
Include the ticker, condition, reference period, and intended action in the alert name. A label such as “NVDA — down 5% from prior close — review guidance” is less ambiguous than “buy alert.” The wording should describe a review task, not promise an automatic trade.
Account for semiconductor-specific events
Chip stocks can move on earnings, guidance, product announcements, capacity changes, memory pricing, export restrictions, customer concentration, and supply-chain news. A drop alert tells you that price moved; it does not identify the cause. Keep a link to the company’s investor-relations calendar or filings in your own research process, but verify the event before deciding what the move means.
Reference periods and trading sessions
Before relying on a percentage rule, determine what the platform means by “down.” A previous-close calculation compares the current quote with the last regular-session close. An intraday calculation may update continuously. The result can differ substantially around the opening bell, after a trading halt, or during a gap.

Check whether the alert evaluates regular-session data only or includes pre-market and post-market trading. Extended-hours quotes can be less liquid and may show wider spreads. If your platform has a session selector, set it deliberately and record the choice in the alert name.
Also confirm quote timing. Real-time, delayed, and consolidated feeds can produce different trigger times. An alert that arrives after a rapid move may reflect data latency rather than a failure of the condition.
Notification and reliability checklist
- Verify the exchange-listed ticker, share class, and currency.
- Enable push permissions for the app and notification permissions at the operating-system level.
- Allow email from the provider and check spam or filtered folders.
- Confirm desktop notification, sound, or webhook permissions if you selected those channels.
- Review regular-session versus extended-hours settings.
- Check whether the alert is one-time, recurring, or removed after triggering.
- For TradingView standard alerts, note the documented two-month maximum; renew or replace rules before they expire.
- After a corporate action, ticker change, merger, split, or app update, reopen the alert and verify the symbol and threshold.
- Test with a clearly unreachable level before relying on the rule for an important review point.
Common failures and fixes

How to interpret the notification
When an alert arrives, first confirm the timestamp, session, and actual percentage or price change. Then identify the catalyst: earnings, guidance, a macroeconomic release, an industry move, a company-specific announcement, or a data adjustment. Check whether the move is a brief intraday excursion or a sustained change.
For a semiconductor company, review the information most relevant to its position in the chain. A designer may be affected by product demand and customer concentration; a foundry by utilization and capacity; a memory maker by pricing and inventory; and an equipment supplier by fab spending. The alert itself cannot make that distinction.

Do not convert a notification into an automatic purchase instruction. Decide in advance what evidence would justify review, what would invalidate the thesis, and how you will handle a second decline. Those decisions belong in your investment plan, not in the alert’s label.

Maintain alerts over time
Schedule a periodic audit of your alert list. Remove symbols you no longer follow, update levels after a fundamental change, and renew rules approaching expiration. Recheck every rule after splits, mergers, ticker changes, app migrations, or a change in your quote-data subscription.
Keep broad percentage monitoring separate from event-specific rules. A watchlist alert can identify movement across many names, while a targeted price or fundamental alert can mark a level tied to a documented review decision. Separating them makes it easier to understand why each notification exists and reduces accidental overreaction.
Practical example
Suppose you follow NVDA, AMD, Intel, TSMC, and a semiconductor-equipment supplier. Create a watchlist containing the exact exchange-listed symbols. Set a 5% decline-from-previous-close alert for broad monitoring. Add an absolute-price alert for each company at the level where you would read the latest earnings release and guidance. For one company, add a technical condition only if you can explain what the indicator means and how often it updates.

Verify ticker, reference period, trading session, permissions, recurrence, and expiration every time. The notification starts your review; it does not replace it.
