Use three layers rather than one setting: turn on your phone’s built-in government alerts, add a hazard app for air-quality detail, and keep a non-phone backup for severe weather. On an iPhone, go to Settings > Notifications > Government Alerts; on Android, search Settings for emergency alerts or Wireless emergency alerts. In the United States, Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) can warn about extreme weather and flash floods without an app. In the United Kingdom, compatible phones receive Emergency Alerts automatically over 4G or 5G. For U.S. air quality, the EPA AirNow app supplies current and forecast AQI for saved locations.

The alert setup that covers the most hazards

No single notification service covers every heat, smoke and flood situation. Cell-broadcast emergency alerts are best for immediate, life-threatening events in the area where your phone is connected. They are not a complete heat-health or air-quality forecast. An app can provide AQI trends and smoke maps, while email systems can deliver regional heat-health information that is less urgent but more specific to a public-health service area.

Alert layer Heat Poor air quality Floods Delivery Connectivity and control
Built-in government or emergency alerts Some extreme-weather or imminent-threat messages; coverage depends on the authority Usually not a substitute for AQI forecasting Flash-flood and other emergency warnings where authorities use the service Cell broadcast to compatible phones Needs a supported cellular network; severity switches vary by phone and region
EPA AirNow (United States) Not a heat-warning service Current and forecast AQI, saved locations, Fire and Smoke map Not a flood-warning service Mobile app Uses the app’s data connection; choose locations and review its current notification controls
UKHSA Weather-Health Alerts (United Kingdom) Regional heat-health email alerts Not an AQI alert service Not a flood-warning service Email Register and select a government region; normally seasonal
NOAA Weather Radio (United States) Forecast and warning information when broadcast May carry hazard information, but not a personal AQI app Official National Weather Service watches and warnings Dedicated radio receiver Works from the radio broadcast; use as a supplement to phone alerts and official instructions

Use the built-in layer first, because it requires no separate subscription. Add the service that fills your main gap: AirNow for U.S. smoke and AQI, UKHSA email for UK heat-health messages, or NOAA Weather Radio for a resilient U.S. backup.

Turn on emergency alerts on an iPhone

Enable Government Alerts

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Scroll to Government Alerts.
  4. Leave the relevant alert types enabled. Depending on your region and carrier, these can include government messages, imminent threats and extreme-weather alerts.

Apple’s support documentation says Government Alerts require service from a supported network provider. Keep a working SIM or eSIM, maintain cellular service and install current iOS updates. A phone with no supported network connection cannot receive a cell-broadcast message, even when the switch is on.

  • Additional Features - SAME localized programming, continuous backlighting option which keeps the LCD on, 25 programmable counties, color-coded alert indicators, alert override automatically switches to warn of impending danger.
  • Experience a comprehensive range of radios from Midland, designed to keep you connected and informed. Our radios offer an array of features, including reliable real-time weather alerts, and robust two-way communication capabilities.

Review Enhanced Safety Alerts when available

In the same Notifications area, look for Enhanced Safety Alerts. On supported devices and in supported regions, review Imminent Threat Alerts and the other choices shown there. Apple documents this feature for the United States and Taiwan and notes that availability is not universal, so its absence does not necessarily indicate a fault. The Apple Support page titled “Government, Emergency and Enhanced Safety Alerts on iPhone” was published on 19 December 2025.

What iPhone settings cannot do

These switches do not create a personal heat index or AQI threshold. They control messages issued by authorized agencies. For routine heat planning or smoke exposure, use an appropriate forecast service as well as Government Alerts.

Turn on emergency alerts on Android

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Use the Settings search box for emergency alerts or Wireless emergency alerts.
  3. Open the matching system page.
  4. Keep Allow alerts enabled.
  5. Leave Extreme threats enabled. Keeping Severe threats enabled is also prudent if you want fewer warnings filtered out.

Android menu names and switches differ by manufacturer, Android version and carrier. Searching is more reliable than following a fixed menu path. Do not send yourself a test alert; instead, verify that the emergency-alert page exists, the important categories are enabled, the phone is updated and the device is connected to a supported mobile network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some Android phones expose additional categories such as public-safety messages or test broadcasts. Read the description beside each switch before changing it. Disabling a category can prevent a warning from appearing even though the phone and carrier support the service.

How U.S. Wireless Emergency Alerts work

WEA messages are government-authorized broadcasts delivered through participating mobile carriers. They need no app and no subscription. Depending on the issuing authority, a message may cover extreme weather, flash floods, hurricanes, storm surge, extreme wind or a local emergency.

Why a traveler may receive an alert

WEA is geographically targeted to the cell area used for the broadcast. If you enter an affected area, your phone may receive the warning even if your saved home location is elsewhere. Conversely, a phone outside the broadcast area may not receive a message intended for another cell area.

What WEA does not promise

  • Not every weather watch or advisory is broadcast as a WEA.
  • A WEA is not a replacement for official forecasts or instructions from local authorities.
  • Coverage depends on a participating carrier, a compatible device and a usable cellular connection.
  • The absence of an alert does not prove that conditions are safe.

The National Weather Service describes WEA as a way to send an alert when you may be in harm’s way without requiring an app or subscription. Keep the phone’s emergency-alert categories enabled and continue checking official weather information for developing conditions.

Get U.S. air-quality alerts and smoke information

Install and configure the AirNow app

  1. Install the EPA AirNow mobile app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
  2. Allow the app to use the location information you are comfortable sharing, or enter locations manually.
  3. Save each area you need to monitor, such as home, work, school or a travel destination.
  4. Open the current and forecast AQI view and check the Fire and Smoke map when wildfire smoke is a concern.
  5. Review the app’s current notification controls and enable the options that match your needs.

The cited EPA information describes current and forecast AQI, multiple saved locations and the Fire and Smoke map. It does not promise one universal push-alert threshold for every user or device. Check the notification screen after installation rather than assuming a particular AQI number will always generate a push message.

Use AQI information for decisions

Check the forecast before outdoor exercise, commuting or children’s activities. If smoke is moving toward a saved location, compare the current reading with the forecast and the Fire and Smoke map instead of relying on a single notification. Follow health guidance issued with the AQI information, especially for people with asthma, heart or lung disease, older adults and children.

Receive heat-health alerts in the United Kingdom

Emergency Alerts on compatible phones

UK Emergency Alerts are broadcast automatically to compatible phones over 4G or 5G. You do not need to sign up, install an app, use mobile data or connect to Wi-Fi. The phone must be powered on, compatible and not in airplane mode. The broadcast service is separate from an email forecast and does not require you to save a home location.

Register for UKHSA Weather-Health Alerts

  1. Open the UK Health Security Agency’s Weather-Health Alert registration service.
  2. Choose your government region.
  3. Provide an email address and complete registration.
  4. Keep the messages enabled in your email account so regional heat-health notices are not filtered automatically.

The system is run with the Met Office and normally covers heat alerts from 1 June through 30 September. Extraordinary alerts can be issued outside that core season. UKHSA guidance updated on 22 April 2026 also identifies the normal cold-health-alert period as 1 November through 31 March; that seasonal timetable is separate from the heat period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use UK Emergency Alerts for urgent broadcasts and the UKHSA service for regional heat-health information. They serve different delivery methods and purposes, so registering for email does not replace keeping the phone compatible and powered on.

Flood alerts: what to do when a message arrives

Distinguish a watch from a warning

  • Watch: flooding is possible. Prepare, monitor official updates and identify higher ground and safe routes.
  • Warning: flooding is expected or happening. Take action immediately and follow local officials.

Respond to the hazard, not just the notification

  1. Read the location, hazard type and instructions in the alert.
  2. Move to higher ground when flooding threatens, following local evacuation directions.
  3. Do not drive or walk through floodwater. Water can hide a washed-out road, carry debris or move a vehicle.
  4. Keep monitoring official updates because a cell-broadcast message may be brief and conditions can change after it arrives.

Enable WEA or your regional emergency-alert service before a storm. A flood warning can be targeted to a cell area, while your route, workplace or family members may be elsewhere; make sure everyone who needs the information has an appropriate alert path.

Use NOAA Weather Radio as a U.S. backup

A NOAA Weather Radio receiver continuously broadcasts official National Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is useful when a phone is silent, damaged, out of battery or unable to obtain a cellular data connection.

Place the receiver where its alert tone can wake you, keep fresh batteries available and program the locations or tone settings supported by your model. Treat it as a supplement: continue following local officials and keep phone alerts enabled. NOAA Weather Radio does not replace an evacuation order or an on-the-ground instruction.

Why you did not receive a flood or heat alert

The alert category is disabled

Return to the iPhone Government Alerts page or Android emergency-alert page and check the severe and extreme categories. Android manufacturers can label the controls differently, so use Settings search again after a system update.

The phone had no eligible connection

Cell-broadcast alerts require a supported mobile network. Airplane mode, a powered-off phone, an inactive SIM or eSIM, poor coverage and an unsupported carrier can prevent delivery. In the UK, airplane mode specifically prevents Emergency Alerts; in all regions, keep the phone powered and connected when conditions are dangerous.

The message was not issued as a phone alert

Authorities do not broadcast every watch, advisory or forecast through WEA or another emergency-alert channel. Use official forecast sources, the AirNow app for U.S. AQI and the UKHSA email service for UK heat-health information where appropriate.

The warning targeted another area

WEA broadcasts are geographically targeted. You may receive one after entering the affected cell area, while someone just outside it may not. A saved location in an app cannot make a cell-broadcast alert appear outside the issuing area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The alert was filtered or missed

Review notification permissions, Focus or Do Not Disturb behavior, sound levels and email spam filtering. Do not assume that an app notification and a government broadcast use the same sound or bypass rules. A radio receiver provides an independent audible path.

A practical setup checklist

  • Enable Government Alerts on iPhone or Allow alerts and Extreme threats on Android.
  • Keep the operating system current and maintain a working SIM or eSIM.
  • Keep cellular service available during severe weather; do not leave the phone in airplane mode.
  • Install AirNow in the United States, save all relevant locations and review its notification controls.
  • Register for UKHSA Weather-Health Alerts if you need UK regional heat-health email updates.
  • Keep a NOAA Weather Radio receiver and spare batteries if you are in the United States and need a non-phone backup.
  • Charge the phone before a forecast event and keep a power bank available.
  • Know where to move for flooding and which local authority issues evacuation instructions.
  • Check official forecasts even when no alert has arrived; alerts are targeted and selective, not a continuous safety verdict.

Privacy, travel and household planning

Built-in cell-broadcast alerts generally do not require you to create an account or share a saved location. Apps and email services can involve location permissions, account details or saved places. Choose manual locations when you do not want continuous location access, and review each app’s permission screen after installation.

Travelers should configure alerts before leaving home. A WEA may follow the cell area you enter, while an AQI app continues to show only the locations you saved. Add the destination and route stops to the app, keep roaming or a supported local connection available, and identify the local emergency number and evacuation authority.

For a household, use more than one delivery path: each person can enable built-in alerts, while one shared radio or email account supplies redundancy. Agree in advance on who checks the forecast, who contacts vulnerable relatives and where everyone goes if flooding threatens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which combination should you choose?

If your main concern is flash flooding

Enable built-in emergency alerts first, keep the phone connected and learn the local watch-versus-warning procedure. In the United States, add NOAA Weather Radio for an independent backup. Follow local officials and move to higher ground when instructed.

If your main concern is wildfire smoke

Use the EPA AirNow app, save every location you spend time in and check the AQI forecast and Fire and Smoke map. Keep government alerts enabled because a smoke event can coincide with extreme weather or another local emergency.

If your main concern is extreme heat in the UK

Leave UK Emergency Alerts available on a compatible 4G or 5G phone and register for UKHSA Weather-Health Alerts for your government region. Remember the normal 1 June–30 September heat-alert season, while allowing for exceptional out-of-season messages.

If you need the broadest coverage

Use all applicable layers: built-in alerts for urgent broadcasts, AirNow or UKHSA for specialized information, and NOAA Weather Radio where available. Their different coverage, connectivity and customization characteristics are complementary rather than interchangeable.
