Your Main Pawn can offer a custom quest, behave differently through an inclination, and use a complete set of vocation-legal equipment. Set the quest at any Riftstone, change inclination with the matching Rift Incense while camping or with an Art of Metamorphosis, equip gear from the Equipment or Items menu, then rest at an inn while online to upload the revised Pawn data. Other players may not see the changes immediately because Capcom says the reflection can take some time.
What you can change, and where
Dragon’s Dogma 2 separates Pawn customization across several locations. A Riftstone controls the Main Pawn’s current Pawn Quest. A campsite is where you use Rift Incense to change inclination. The Pause menu’s Equipment or Items interface handles weapons, armor, and clothing. An online inn rest publishes the resulting Pawn data for other players.

How to set a Pawn Quest at a Riftstone
Capcom’s official manual gives the short version: “To set a pawn quest, simply access a riftstone.” The Riftstone menu lets you choose an objective for your Main Pawn and then attach a reward.
Set the objective and reward
- Find and interact with a Riftstone.
- Choose the setting for your Main Pawn’s Pawn Quest.
- Select an available objective. Objectives can involve completing a task while the Pawn travels beyond the Rift with another player; item retrieval can also be used when you want another Arisen to bring you a particular item.
- Choose the reward. Capcom identifies two reward types: a specific item or a sum of gold.
- Confirm the quest. The reward is committed when the quest is configured, so verify the item or amount before accepting.
A Pawn Quest is completed by your Main Pawn while traveling beyond the Rift with another player. Pawn Quests also provide opportunities to obtain items and acquire Pawn Badges, according to Capcom’s manual.

Understand the cost before confirming
An item reward is not merely a promise displayed to prospective hirers. The item is removed from your inventory when you set the quest. A gold reward is deducted from your funds at configuration time. For that reason, do not offer a valuable consumable, upgrade material, or quest item unless you are willing to lose it immediately.
| Reward choice | Resource affected | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Specific item | The selected item in your inventory | It is removed when the Pawn Quest is set; you cannot use it elsewhere until it is reacquired. |
| Gold | Your current funds | The configured amount is subtracted when the quest is set, even before another player completes it. |
Choose a reward that attracts help without damaging your run
A useful reward can make your Pawn Quest more appealing, but the best reward is one you can replace. Before selecting it, ask whether the item is needed for an imminent upgrade, whether it is a one-of-a-kind quest object, and whether paying the gold would leave enough for travel, equipment, or other planned expenses. A modest reward that remains affordable after every reset is more sustainable than an extravagant offer you cannot repeat.
Review or replace a finished quest
When the current Pawn Quest ends, inspect the returned Pawn and then access a Riftstone again if you want to configure a new objective. Treat each reset as a new commitment: the replacement reward follows the same item-removal or gold-deduction rules.

Inclination influences how your Main Pawn behaves, but the official material does not establish one universally best inclination or publish a complete ranking. Choose according to the Pawn’s vocation, the role your party lacks, and how much independent behavior you want during combat and exploration.
Method 1: Use Rift Incense while camping
- Obtain the Rift Incense that corresponds to the inclination you want.
- Set up a campsite with your camping kit.
- While the camp is active, speak to your Main Pawn.
- Use the matching Rift Incense from the camping conversation or item option.
- Finish the interaction and allow the new inclination to take effect before leaving camp.
Capcom’s FAQ describes this as speaking to your Main Pawn while camping when the appropriate Rift Incense is in the Pawn’s possession. If the expected option does not appear, check that the incense is actually available to the Main Pawn and that you are speaking to the Main Pawn rather than a hired Pawn.
Method 2: Use an Art of Metamorphosis
The alternative is an Art of Metamorphosis. Capcom states that this item can be obtained in-game at the Pawn Guild. Use it when you want to change the Main Pawn’s inclination without relying on the camping conversation and the corresponding incense.
Pick behavior that supports the party
Start with the job your party needs rather than a supposed universal ranking. A Pawn whose vocation already covers your preferred frontline, ranged, support, or utility function should receive an inclination that reinforces that job. If the Pawn is repeatedly abandoning its role, ignoring useful targets, or roaming when you need close support, reassess whether the selected inclination and vocation are working together.

Rank #2
- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories. With their heart taken by the Dragon, the Arisen is set on a path to slay that symbol of the world’s destruction as it soars through the sky on massive wings, breathing flames that scorch everything in its path. With the Arisen’s future veiled in mystery, what challenges and triumphs await on the path to their destiny?
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. Pawns create the feeling of a cooperative gameplay experience by offering unique characteristics, skills, and knowledge gained from their experiences with other Arisen.
- Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.
Your own commands also matter. The official command manual explains that Pawn commands alter what Pawns do: during combat, a command can direct them to spread out across the battlefield; during exploration, commands can prompt interaction with nearby treasure chests, mechanisms, and gathering spots. Inclination therefore works alongside direct instructions rather than replacing them. A Pawn may have a suitable inclination and still need a command for a particular fight or discovery.
| Decision question | What to consider |
|---|---|
| What is the Pawn’s vocation? | Choose behavior that complements the vocation’s normal combat and exploration responsibilities. |
| What does the party lack? | Favor an inclination that helps the Pawn cover the missing function instead of duplicating another party member. |
| How much autonomy do you want? | Consider whether you prefer close adherence to commands or more independent action while traveling and fighting. |
| Is the behavior repeatable? | Observe the Pawn across more than one encounter before deciding that a change is necessary. |
How to equip weapons, armor, and clothing on the Main Pawn
Equipment changes are made through the Pause menu’s Equipment or Items interface. The labels and button prompts can differ by platform and by your control remapping, but the sequence is the same: select the Main Pawn, make sure the item belongs to that character, and choose Equip.
Equip an item already held by the Pawn
- Open the Pause menu.
- Enter Equipment or Items.
- Switch the managed character to your Main Pawn.
- Open the relevant category: weapon, armor, or clothing.
- Highlight the item and choose Equip.
- Review the resulting loadout before closing the menu.
Transfer gear from the Arisen first
If the item is in the Arisen’s inventory, it may not appear in the Main Pawn’s equipment list. Transfer the item to the Pawn through the inventory interface, switch back to the Main Pawn’s equipment view, and then equip it. This is the usual explanation when you can see an item in your overall inventory but the Pawn’s Equip command is unavailable.
Check vocation compatibility
A weapon or armor piece must be legal for the Pawn’s current vocation. If the Equip option is disabled or the item is missing from the selectable list, check the item’s weapon class, armor slot, and the Pawn’s vocation before changing anything else. Changing vocation can alter which equipment is valid, so recheck the loadout after a vocation change rather than assuming the previous set remains usable.

- Confirm that you selected the Main Pawn, not the Arisen or a hired Pawn.
- Confirm that the item is in the Main Pawn’s inventory.
- Confirm that the item belongs to a slot the Pawn can use.
- Confirm that the current vocation supports the weapon or armor type.
- Confirm the final weapon and armor appearance before leaving the menu.
Use a complete loadout, not only a new weapon
When preparing the Pawn for other players, inspect every relevant slot. A new weapon does not automatically correct outdated armor or clothing. Compare the current vocation with the whole set, then replace incompatible or obsolete pieces individually. Keep any item you may need for a different vocation in storage or on the appropriate character rather than leaving it in a slot the current Pawn cannot legally use.
Why equipment or items can change without your input
Two automatic systems documented by Capcom can make a Pawn’s inventory look different from the loadout you expected.
Hawker and Logistician specializations
A Pawn with the Hawker or Logistician specialization may automatically receive items or equipment from the Arisen. These specializations can also sell low-rarity items to reduce carried weight. If an item appears to have moved, or low-rarity stock disappears, check the Pawn’s specialization before assuming that a manual transfer or equipment bug occurred.

- The deep, explorable fantasy world of Dragon's Dogma... Dragon's Dogma is a narrative-driven, single-player action RPG that challenges players to shape their own experience—from the appearance of their Arisen, their vocation, and their party, to how they approach various situations and much more.
When you want strict control over a particular item, account for this behavior before handing it to the Pawn. Keep irreplaceable or deliberately reserved items in the appropriate inventory or storage location instead of relying on a specialization that may redistribute or sell eligible goods.
Forfeit and item storage
If a Pawn becomes forfeit, items they were holding are automatically sent to item storage, according to Capcom’s FAQ. Look in storage before attempting to reacquire or repurchase missing equipment. This rule concerns items held by the Pawn; it does not mean that every equipment change is caused by a forfeit.
How to make other players see the updated Pawn
Changing a quest, inclination, vocation, skill, or equipment does not by itself guarantee that the online version updates immediately. Capcom instructs players to rest at an inn while connected to the network so the Pawn information can be uploaded.
- Finish the desired Pawn Quest, inclination, vocation, skill, and equipment changes.
- Verify the Main Pawn’s final loadout and objective locally.
- Connect the game to the network.
- Rest at an inn.
- Allow the rest and synchronization to complete before closing the game or disconnecting.
Other players can then hire the uploaded version of the Pawn. Capcom warns that reflection may take some time, so an immediate check from another account or player is not a reliable test that the upload failed. If the old version remains visible, keep the game online, confirm that the inn rest completed, and allow time for the server-side data to propagate.
A practical setup sequence for a reliable Pawn
Use this order when preparing a Pawn for a new party role or for other players to hire. It minimizes the chance of paying for a reward you later want to change or uploading an incomplete loadout.

Choosing between competing Pawn setups
When two configurations both seem viable, compare them using the same criteria rather than changing several variables at once.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Good sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Role fit | Does the inclination support the vocation and fill a missing party function? | The Pawn consistently performs the job you assigned. | The Pawn repeatedly abandons its role or duplicates another member. |
| Control versus autonomy | Do you want close command-following or independent exploration and combat decisions? | Commands and observed behavior complement each other. | You must constantly correct the Pawn’s movement or target choices. |
| Quest economics | Is the reward attractive while still affordable to replace? | You can reset the quest without sacrificing a needed item or vital funds. | The reward consumes a one-off item or leaves your budget short. |
| Equipment legality | Can the current vocation use every selected weapon and armor piece? | All intended slots show the correct equipped items. | The Equip option is disabled or the item is on the wrong character. |
| Inventory stability | Could Hawker or Logistician behavior alter what the Pawn carries? | Reserved items remain outside automatic handling. | Low-rarity goods disappear or equipment moves unexpectedly. |
| Online visibility | Has the completed setup been followed by an online inn rest? | The uploaded Pawn eventually shows the new data. | Another player still sees an older version immediately after the change. |
Troubleshooting common failures
The Pawn Quest option is not where expected
Return to a Riftstone and interact with it directly. Pawn Quest configuration is tied to the Riftstone interface, not the ordinary inventory screen. Make sure you are setting the Main Pawn’s quest rather than trying to edit a hired Pawn.

The reward cannot be selected
Check that the item is actually available in your inventory and that you can afford the stated gold amount. Remember that selecting an item consumes it when the quest is confirmed; an item needed elsewhere may no longer be present after configuration.
The inclination did not change
Verify that you used the Rift Incense associated with the desired inclination, that it is in the Main Pawn’s possession, and that the conversation occurred at an active campsite. If using the alternative method, obtain an Art of Metamorphosis from the Pawn Guild and use that item instead.
The Equip button is unavailable
Switch to the Main Pawn, transfer the gear from the Arisen if necessary, and inspect vocation compatibility. A wrong character selection, wrong inventory location, or incompatible weapon or armor class can each produce the same symptom.
Another player sees the old Pawn
Confirm the final configuration locally, connect to the network, and complete an inn rest. Capcom notes that reflection can take time, so wait for propagation before concluding that the upload failed.
Items vanished from the Pawn
Check whether the Pawn has Hawker or Logistician specialization, since either can automatically receive items or sell low-rarity goods. If the Pawn became forfeit, inspect item storage because held items are sent there automatically.
What the official guidance establishes
Capcom’s FAQ, updated October 12, 2026, confirms the supported methods for changing the Main Pawn’s inclination, including Rift Incense at a campsite and Art of Metamorphosis from the Pawn Guild. The official manual confirms that Riftstones are the entry point for Pawn Quest setup and that item and gold rewards are consumed when configured. Capcom’s command guidance also confirms that Pawn commands influence combat spacing and exploration interactions. No authoritative source cited here provides a universal inclination ranking or quantitative performance statistics, so role-based testing is more defensible than treating one inclination as objectively best.
