To set up Instagram parental controls, start at Meta’s Family Center supervision page. Sign in with your Instagram account, invite your teen, and have the teen approve the invitation. Both people need Instagram accounts. Once supervision is active, you can review time spent, set time limits, see following and follower accounts, and receive certain safety notifications. If your teen uses more than one Instagram account, each account must be linked separately.
Instagram’s labels and available controls can differ by app version, account, language, and country. Use Family Center as the current starting point and follow the live prompts rather than relying on a fixed iPhone, Android, or desktop menu sequence.
What Instagram supervision is—and what it is not
Instagram supervision is Meta’s parent-and-teen oversight system. It connects a parent or guardian account with a teen’s Instagram account after the teen accepts an invitation. The relationship is designed to support visibility, time management, and conversations about online activity; it is not a substitute for discussing boundaries with your teen.
Supervision is separate from automatic Teen Account protections. Teen Account settings can apply protections at the account level, while supervision gives an approved parent tools and information about the teen’s use. A teen can have automatic protections without a parent link, but parent supervision requires an invitation and the teen’s approval.

Meta’s public descriptions do not establish that supervision lets parents read the contents of private messages. Do not promise message-content access to another caregiver or assume that seeing account activity means reading conversations.
What you need before sending an invitation
- A parent or guardian Instagram account. The supervising adult needs an Instagram account that can accept and manage the invitation.
- A teen Instagram account. The teen must also have an Instagram account to accept supervision.
- Teen approval. Supervision does not become active merely because a parent sends an invitation; the teen must approve it.
- The correct teen account. If the teen has two or more Instagram accounts, set up supervision separately for each one.
- Current access to both accounts. The adult and teen should be able to sign in while completing the invitation and approval flow.
Family Center also consolidates supervision across Instagram and other Meta services. Meta’s May 2026 announcement says a parent can send a single invitation to supervise a teen across Instagram and other Meta services, with supervised accounts shown together in Family Center. The services and controls visible to you can still depend on the account and region.
How to start Instagram supervision in Family Center
Meta’s current setup destination is the Family Center supervision page. Because Instagram changes menus and labels, the exact taps after sign-in may not match screenshots from older guides.

- Open Family Center. Go to familycenter.meta.com/supervision in a browser. If Meta asks you to sign in, use the Instagram account that will supervise the teen.
- Choose the supervision setup option. Follow the live Family Center prompt to start supervising a teen. The wording and placement of the button can vary by app version, browser, and country.
- Select the teen’s Instagram account. Check the username carefully before sending anything. A teen with multiple Instagram accounts needs a separate setup for each account.
- Send the invitation. Family Center creates an invitation for the teen. Send it through the method shown in the current interface.
- Have the teen review the invitation. The teen must sign in to the invited Instagram account, review what supervision means, and approve the connection. Approval is required for activation.
- Confirm that the account is supervised. Return to Family Center and check that the teen appears as supervised. If the teen has another account, repeat the process while signed in to or selecting that additional account.
- Review the available controls together. Open the supervision dashboard with your teen. Explain what information is visible, agree on how you will use time limits, and discuss what to do if a safety alert appears.
If a label in your interface differs from these descriptions, do not treat the difference as an error. Meta’s official help result for Instagram supervision redirected to login during the latest review, so a universal list of iOS, Android, and desktop taps cannot be confirmed. Family Center’s live prompts are the authoritative route for your account.
What parents can see and manage
Meta’s official inventory describes several supervision capabilities. Availability can change as Meta rolls out updates, so check the controls displayed in your Family Center dashboard.

Topic insights are intentionally general. They can help you ask informed questions about what your teen encounters, but they are not a transcript of everything the teen views and should not be treated as one.
Features that depend on language, region, or rollout stage
Instagram’s family-safety tools do not arrive identically for every account. Meta has described several rollouts with specific qualifications.

General topic insights
In May 2026, Meta said parents could see the general topics a teen engages with on Instagram and that this feature was globally available in English. Meta also described planned notifications in select markets when a teen adds a new interest. Those notifications were described as planned and market-limited; do not assume every parent receives them.
13+ content settings for Teen Accounts
In June 2026, Meta said 13+ content settings were rolling out globally to Teen Accounts across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. This is a rollout description, not a promise that every Instagram account already has the same controls. Open the teen’s current settings to see which options are present rather than relying on a list from another account.
Search alerts related to suicide or self-harm
Meta reported on June 17, 2026, that supervision alerts for repeated searches related to suicide or self-harm had rolled out to supervising parents in the European Union, Brazil, and India. That report does not establish global availability. If you are outside those markets, or if the alert is absent from your dashboard, do not assume it is malfunctioning or enabled elsewhere.

Family Center coverage
Meta describes Family Center as a consolidated location for supervising teens across Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook, and Messenger. A single Family Center view can therefore include more than Instagram, but the controls shown for each service may differ.
Supervision versus automatic Teen Account protections

These systems work together rather than replacing one another. A teen may have Teen Account protections even when no parent is connected, while supervision adds a consent-based parent relationship.
How to use time information and limits constructively
Start by looking at the time information with your teen instead of presenting it as a surprise. Ask when Instagram is useful, when it becomes distracting, and which periods should be protected from interruptions. Then use the available limit control in Family Center and explain what the limit is intended to accomplish.
- Agree on the purpose. A limit might protect sleep, homework, meals, or family time. Choose a reason your teen understands.
- Set expectations before enforcement. Explain what will happen when the limit is reached and how your family will handle exceptions.
- Review the result. After using the limit, discuss whether it is practical. Adjust it through the controls Family Center provides rather than creating a second, conflicting rule.
- Keep the conversation proportional. Time information shows duration, not whether every minute was harmful or productive.
How to discuss following, followers, and topic information
The following and follower lists can reveal the broad social context of an account. Use them as conversation starters, not as a reason to interrogate every name. Ask who the teen knows, what kinds of accounts are useful, and what they do when an unfamiliar account contacts them.
General topic insights can similarly support questions about interests and recommendations. They do not provide a complete record of the teen’s activity. Avoid presenting a topic as proof that your teen searched for or endorsed every item associated with it.

Agree in advance on what you will do if a report notification arrives. The notification tells you that the teen shared that they reported someone; it does not, by itself, resolve what happened. Ask the teen for context and use Instagram’s own reporting and safety options when appropriate.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
The invitation cannot be sent
- Confirm that both the parent and teen have Instagram accounts.
- Check that you selected the teen’s intended username, especially if several accounts are available.
- Open the Family Center supervision page again and follow the current prompt instead of an old saved link or screenshot.
- Update the Instagram app or try the browser-based Family Center route if the in-app screen does not load.
The teen has not approved the invitation
- Ask the teen to sign in to the exact account named in the invitation.
- Have the teen review pending supervision requests and approve the invitation from the current Instagram interface.
- Do not treat a sent invitation as active supervision; the connection remains incomplete until approval occurs.
Only one of several teen accounts is supervised
Meta says each additional Instagram account must be linked separately. Start another invitation for the other username and have the teen approve that invitation as well.
A control or alert is missing
- Check the account’s language, country, age classification, and current Teen Account status.
- Remember that Meta describes some tools as rolling out, globally available only in English, planned for select markets, or reported only for the European Union, Brazil, and India.
- Look for the feature in the current Family Center dashboard rather than assuming an older article’s menu path still applies.
The Family Center page redirects to login
A login redirect is expected when Meta needs to identify the supervising account. Sign in with the parent account, then continue through the live supervision flow. If the page loops, try the current Instagram app or another supported browser and verify that you are not switching between parent and teen accounts during setup.

Supervision requires the teen’s approval, which makes consent part of the setup rather than an optional courtesy. Explain what you will review, who can see it, and how long you expect to use the controls. Family Center’s dashboard should be treated as sensitive family information; avoid sharing screenshots of the teen’s account or lists outside the people who need them.

What Meta has reported about adoption and safety priorities
Meta reported that the number of U.S. teens enrolled in Instagram supervision had more than doubled since the prior year. The company did not publish an absolute count, and the figure does not measure effectiveness or representativeness. It indicates reported growth in enrollment, not that supervision prevents every harm.
In a June 17, 2026 newsroom post, Meta attributed this statement to Natasha Jog, Director, Public Policy, Meta, India: “Keeping teens safe is one of our most important priorities, and these updates from, 13+ content settings across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, to AI-powered age detection and new parental alerts — reflect our commitment to building age-appropriate experiences by default.” This is Meta’s statement of intent, not independent evidence that every feature works the same way for every family.
Use Family Center’s education material
Meta says Family Center includes an education hub with articles, videos, and tips, including help talking with teens about social media. These materials can supplement—not replace—the agreement you make with your teen about limits, privacy, reporting, and when to ask an adult for help.
