To stop a child opening mature games, apply an age-rating limit to the child’s account (PlayStation or Xbox) or to the Switch console through Nintendo’s Parental Controls app. The setting must match the rating system used in your country, and online chat, spending, and user-generated-content permissions are separate controls.
Start by creating a properly dated child or family account, then test the restriction while signed in as the child. A shared Switch is the major exception: Nintendo’s controls apply to the console rather than individual users, so its level must suit the youngest player.
What the controls actually restrict
Age controls compare a game’s published rating with the maximum age level you allow. They describe content suitability, not how difficult a game is. PlayStation explicitly says, “Age ratings for games have nothing to do with the difficulty of the game.” Ratings can also carry descriptors for violence, bad language, sexual content, gambling, or other material. Check the rating and descriptors on the digital store listing or the physical case before deciding whether a title is appropriate.

Prepare accounts and choose the right threshold
Use a child or family account
Profile-level controls only work when the child plays on the child profile. Sony recommends separate child accounts with accurate dates of birth. On Xbox, add the child’s Microsoft account to the parent’s Microsoft family. On Switch, remember that the app’s software restriction follows the console, so separate user profiles do not create separate age limits.
Read the rating, not just the marketing
On PlayStation, the rating appears on the PlayStation Store product-detail screen and on physical disc packaging. Read the content descriptors as well as the age symbol. A game below your chosen age threshold may still contain an element you do not want a child to encounter, while a higher-rated game may be acceptable to your family for a particular reason.
Pick a limit below the mature title
To block a mature game, set the child’s permitted level lower than that game’s local rating. The exact names and number of levels differ by platform and region, so select the level shown by your console or app rather than trying to translate a rating from another country. If your platform offers a custom setting, use it when a preset is either too strict or too permissive.

- Sign in to the family-manager account on the PS5.
- Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child’s account. If the child has no separate account, create one in the family setup first; do not rely on a shared adult profile.
- Open the parental control for games and content and choose the game age level you permit. To prevent mature games, choose a level below the rating shown for those games in your region.
- Review the other controls on the same child profile. Communication, user-generated content, and spending restrictions do not automatically follow from the game age level.
- Have the child sign out of PlayStation Network and sign back in. Sony says a child who was already in a game should sign out and back in for a changed control to take effect.
Make sure the child account has completed email verification and is signed in. An unverified or incorrectly signed-in account can make a correctly configured limit appear ineffective.

Handle an exception request
PS5 supports reviewing a child’s request for an exception to an age limit. Treat an exception as a deliberate, title-specific decision rather than raising the permanent age threshold. If you approve a request, check whether the approval is for that game only and confirm the child is using the intended account before allowing play.
Change PlayStation controls away from the console
The family manager can also use PlayStation Account Management on the web or the PlayStation Family app. The same child account and family-manager relationship must be used; changing settings on an unrelated adult account will not change the child’s restrictions.
PlayStation 4: set a game age limit
- Sign in as the family manager on the PS4.
- Go to Settings > Parental Controls/Family Management > Family Management.
- Select the child’s account.
- Change the game-and-content parental control to the age level you want. Use the rating displayed for your local PlayStation Store or the game’s packaging when choosing the level.
- Check communication, user-generated-content, and spending controls separately.
- Ask the child to leave the game, sign out, and sign back in so the new restriction is loaded.

Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One: use the Family Settings app
Microsoft places the parent-facing controls in the Xbox Family Settings app. The app supports child-account setup and content settings for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. It also provides activity reports, screen-time schedules, spending controls, and requests. With a family-group account setup, the content and screen-time rules can also apply to Windows PCs.

Set up the family relationship
- Sign in to the Xbox Family Settings app with the parent account.
- Add or select the child’s Microsoft account in the family group. Verify that the child is playing under that account on the console, not under the parent’s profile.
- Open the child’s profile and look for the content settings area. Microsoft’s current public overview confirms the feature but does not publish a stable, button-by-button list of age-selector labels; the wording can change with the app version.
- If the app visibly offers an age or rating choice, select the maximum level you consider appropriate and save it. To block mature games, choose a level below the local rating of those games.
- Review the separate communication, multiplayer, user-generated-content, spending, and screen-time options. A game-content limit does not necessarily disable voice chat or messages.
- Sign out of the child profile on the Xbox and sign back in, then try a game that is above the selected level.
Do not guess when the menu looks different
If your app does not show an age-rating selector, update the app and confirm that the child account is actually in the parent’s family group. Do not use an unrelated console PIN or an adult account’s preference as a substitute. Because Microsoft’s published overview does not expose the exact current labels, follow the choices shown in your installed version and consult Microsoft’s in-app help if the content-setting control is missing.
Use requests instead of raising the permanent limit
The Family Settings app can surface child requests. Keep the standing content level restrictive and handle an individual mature-game request after reviewing the title and its descriptors. This preserves the default rule for every other game.
Nintendo Switch: set software restrictions in the smartphone app
Nintendo’s US Parental Controls app lets a parent choose a preset age category or create custom settings. Nintendo says software restrictions can use ESRB age ratings in the United States, and the restricted-software setting can be overridden for selected games by whitelisting them. Nintendo also states, “Parents may override this using their PIN.” Keep that PIN private from children who should not change the rule.

Choose a preset or custom level
- Open the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smartphone app associated with the console.
- Choose the software-restriction setting.
- Select a preset age category, or choose custom settings if you need a more precise limit.
- In the United States, compare the game’s ESRB rating with the level you selected. Set the limit below the rating of any mature title you want to block.
- If a particular title is appropriate despite the general limit, use the app’s option to whitelist that specific game rather than lifting the restriction for all software.
- Save the setting and test the title from the Switch. Keep the app’s PIN protected.
Account for the Switch’s console-wide scope
Nintendo’s Japanese support guidance says restrictions apply to the console, not individually to users. A child and an adult sharing one Switch therefore receive the same software restriction. Set the level for the youngest player, and use the documented per-game whitelist when an older player needs access to a title that remains blocked for the child.

Japan-specific rating thresholds
Nintendo’s Japanese guide illustrates why regional labels cannot be converted directly to US ESRB categories. These examples apply to Japan’s CERO and IARC systems:

These are Japan-specific examples, not ESRB equivalents. For the regional setting and store your family uses, follow Nintendo’s local rating label and descriptors. An age-rating rule answers “Can this software launch?” It does not by itself answer whether a child can communicate with strangers, view user-created content, join multiplayer sessions, or buy items. Configure those controls separately on each platform.

A game can be below the allowed age and still expose chat or user-generated content unless those permissions are restricted independently.

Test the restriction before handing over the console
- Sign in to the child account (or, on Switch, use the console with the restriction enabled).
- Try a game whose local rating is clearly above the chosen level.
- Confirm that the console blocks launch or asks for the parent authorization method.
- Try an allowed game to make sure the rule is not broader than intended.
- Open an online feature and verify communication and user-generated-content settings separately.
- Repeat the test after a system, app, or account change.
Troubleshooting when a mature game still starts
The child is using an adult profile
Age restrictions tied to a child account do not protect an adult profile. Sign out, select the child profile, and remove the child’s access to the adult account’s login or passcode.
The setting has not propagated
On PlayStation, have the child leave the game and sign out and back in. On Xbox and Switch, close the game, reconnect the app to the correct family or console, and sign in again before retesting.
The rating system is different from the one you expected
Check the game’s store region, physical packaging, and rating descriptors. A title may show ESRB in one country and CERO, IARC, or another system elsewhere. Do not select a threshold by translating symbols informally.

A shared Switch is allowing access for an older player
Because the Switch rule is console-wide, lower the console level for the youngest player and whitelist only the specific titles an older player may use. Do not assume separate Switch users create separate software limits.
The game is blocked but chat remains available
That is expected when only the game age setting was changed. Return to the child’s communication and user-generated-content controls and set those permissions independently.
