The reliable way to limit a child’s gaming is to use the child’s own account inside your platform’s family group. Set play-time rules separately from purchase rules, then test the child account—not an adult account on the same console. Xbox and Windows use Microsoft Family Safety, PlayStation uses Family Management and the PlayStation Family app, and Switch or Switch 2 uses Nintendo’s free Parental Controls app. Menus and availability can vary by country, so check your region before following an exact screen path.
Start with the account, not the console
Parental controls follow the account that is signed in. A restriction attached only to a parent’s profile, or to a console while an adult account is being used, may not govern the child’s play or purchases. Create or add the child account to the platform’s family group, and keep the adult account as the family manager or organizer. On Xbox, Microsoft says settings apply when the child is signed in to the family-linked Microsoft account. On PlayStation, Sony says the child should verify their email and sign in on the console for controls to work.
Before changing a setting, write down the child’s exact gamertag, online ID, Nintendo Account, or other account identifier. If a game uses its own login, note that too; a platform restriction cannot automatically control a separate billing system.

Play-time limits and spending limits do different jobs
- Play-time controls decide when the child may use the console or a particular game and how long the allowance lasts. Depending on the platform, the system can warn, alarm, block, or interrupt play.
- Spending controls decide whether money is available, whether an adult must approve a purchase, or whether the child account can buy from a store at all.
- Third-party controls apply when a game or service takes payment through its own account, website, mobile billing, or payment processor rather than the console store.
Set both categories deliberately. A child can stay within a one-hour schedule and still spend a stored balance, or have purchases blocked while playing for several hours. Neither control substitutes for the other.

| Platform | Time-control scope | Schedule and expiry behavior | Spending model | Adult controls and coverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox and Windows | Family Safety can limit selected apps and games and set device schedules. Microsoft’s help page describes coverage across Windows, Xbox, and connected Android devices; the Xbox Family Settings app specifically manages Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows activity tied to the family Microsoft account. | Set a daily allowance and permitted hours, with the same schedule every day or different hours by day. The documented flow enforces the limit; a specific warning style is not promised. | Parent adds money to the child’s Microsoft balance. The child cannot overdraw it. Approval can be required when a purchase exceeds an age limit or the balance is exhausted; an organizer can require approval for every purchase when a card is attached. This is not an automatically renewing monthly allowance. | Pause and balance/spending review are available in Xbox Family Settings. Limits depend on the child signing in to the linked account. |
| PlayStation | Family Management and the PlayStation Family app control when and for how long a child plays. | The app can send a reminder or block play when time expires. Exact labels can differ because the cited controls documentation is UK-specific. | Purchases on the child’s PlayStation Store account draw from the family manager’s wallet. The monthly spending limit is zero by default; set a limit if purchases are intended. | Use Family Management, Account Management, console settings, or the app. The child must complete email verification and sign in on the console. |
| Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 | The free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app manages system use after it is paired with the console and Nintendo Account. | Set a daily duration or a latest allowed time. The app can show an on-screen alarm and, optionally, suspend software automatically. A parent can add time or temporarily disable the alarm or suspension with the PIN. | Nintendo eShop purchase restrictions are handled in Nintendo Account settings, separately from the time-limit app. | Up to two parents or guardians can share control through the app. Region-specific account and age requirements may apply. |
Set limits on Xbox and Windows
1. Put the child in a Microsoft family group
Use the Microsoft Family Safety website or app and confirm that the child has a child Microsoft account inside your family group. The child must sign in with that account on Xbox or Windows; using a different adult profile bypasses the account-level rules. The Xbox Family Settings app is available from Microsoft’s official page: Xbox Family Settings.
On Xbox consoles, the relevant coverage is Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. On Windows, the limit applies to the family-linked Microsoft account. Microsoft’s Family Safety time-limit documentation also lists connected Android devices, but do not assume that the Xbox console app controls every mobile game; check which account and device the individual limit is attached to.
2. Set an app or game allowance
Microsoft’s current help flow is:
- Open Family Safety and select the child or family member.
- Choose Windows/Xbox/Mobile when that device category is shown.
- Open Set time limits, then select Apps, features, and games.
- Turn on app and game limits.
- Select the game or application.
- Enter the daily amount of time and the hours in which it may be used.
- Choose one schedule for every day or customize each day separately, then save it.
The corresponding web view uses the Apps, features, and games tab. You can therefore allow a longer session on a weekend, set a school-night cutoff, or give separate allowances to different games. The detailed instructions are at Microsoft’s app and game limit guide.
Use the narrowest rule that matches your goal. An app or game limit leaves other permitted activities available, while a broader device schedule can cover all Xbox or Windows use. If a title appears more than once, identify the version the child actually launches and apply the rule to that entry.
3. Control Microsoft Store spending
Microsoft’s spending system is balance-based rather than a recurring monthly budget. Add a chosen amount to the child’s Microsoft account. The child cannot spend beyond that balance. Microsoft says approval is needed for purchases above the child’s age limit or when the balance has been exhausted.

If a payment card is attached to the child account, an organizer can turn on Require approval for every purchase. Enable purchase notifications and review spending activity so you can see transactions rather than relying only on the remaining balance. The detailed rules and account options are documented at Microsoft’s spending-limits guide.
Do not describe the balance as a monthly allowance that refreshes automatically. When the balance reaches zero, the child must wait for you to add funds or approve the next purchase, depending on the account’s age and approval settings.
4. Test the Xbox or Windows setup
- Sign out of the adult profile and sign in as the child.
- Launch the specific game covered by the rule and confirm that the allowance and permitted hours are reflected.
- Check that the child cannot switch to an unrestricted adult profile without the family organizer’s credentials.
- Make a low-value test purchase only if you intend to allow purchases; otherwise confirm that approval or insufficient balance stops it.
- Review the family activity and spending screens after the test.
If the rule works in the app but not on the console, verify that the console has internet access, the child is using the linked Microsoft account, and the game is not being launched under another profile. A purchase made through a non-Microsoft billing system requires that provider’s own controls; Microsoft identifies non-Microsoft billing as a separate support topic.
Set limits on PlayStation
1. Complete Family Management and child verification
Create the child account under Family Management and make the intended adult the family manager or an authorized guardian. Sony’s support instructions say the child should complete email verification and sign in on the console. Without that step, a setting can exist in the family account but fail to govern the session you are trying to control.
You can manage settings in Account Management, on the console, or in the PlayStation Family app. The app page is a US resource and lists iOS 14 or later and Android 8 or later as compatibility requirements: PlayStation Family app. The detailed spending page cited here is UK support documentation, so names and country-specific options may differ: PlayStation parental controls and spending limits.

2. Set a play schedule and response at expiry
In Family Management or the PlayStation Family app, select the child and open play-time controls. Set when the child may play and the permitted duration. The app lets you choose whether the child receives a reminder as time runs out or play is blocked when the allowance ends. A reminder is useful for saving progress; blocking is appropriate when the end time must be firm.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter saving the schedule, have the child sign in on the console and start a game during an allowed period. Confirm that the remaining time is shown and that the selected reminder or block occurs at the boundary. If the child’s account is not signed in, or if the game is running under an adult account, the schedule will not be a reliable control.
3. Set the monthly spending limit
PlayStation uses the family manager’s wallet for purchases made from the child’s PlayStation Store account. Sony documents a monthly limit that defaults to zero. Leave it at zero to prevent purchases, or enter the amount you are prepared to make available for the month.
On a PS5, the documented route is:
- Open Settings.
- Choose Family and Parental Controls.
- Select Family Management.
- Choose the child.
- Open Parental Controls.
- Select Monthly Spending Limit and enter the chosen amount.
You can also select the child in Family Management through Account Management and edit Monthly Spending Limit. Confirm which adult manages the family settings before changing the value; a guardian may be able to adjust controls, but the family manager’s wallet is the source of funds.
4. Check what PlayStation controls do not cover
Platform controls govern PlayStation accounts and services, not every feature inside every game. Sony notes, for example, that Roblox communications are independent of console parental controls. If a child buys currency through a game’s own account, website, or external payment route, apply that service’s account and billing restrictions as well. The PlayStation Family app FAQ is available at Sony’s app support page.

Set limits on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
1. Pair the Parental Controls app
Nintendo’s Parental Controls app is free. Pair it with the Switch or Switch 2 and the Nintendo Account used by the family. Follow the pairing instructions shown by the app and create a PIN that the child does not know. Nintendo says two parents or guardians can share control, which is useful when each adult needs to adjust a schedule or respond to an alert.
The official product guidance is at Nintendo Switch Parental Controls. The cited page is US-facing; account, age, communication, and Switch 2 features can vary by region.
2. Set a daily duration or bedtime
In the app, choose how long the system may be used or set the latest time it may be used each day. You can tailor the rule to school nights and weekends rather than applying one duration to every day. The app displays an on-screen alarm as the limit approaches or is reached.
Choose whether to enable automatic software suspension. With suspension enabled, the system interrupts the software when the limit is reached; with the alarm alone, the child receives a warning while the parent decides how strictly to enforce the end. A parent can add time or temporarily disable the alarm or suspension by entering the PIN.
3. Restrict eShop purchases separately
The time-limit app is not a spending cap. Nintendo says restrictions for Nintendo eShop products and services are handled in Nintendo Account settings. Open the current Nintendo Account support instructions for your country and review purchase restrictions there; do not assume that a bedtime alarm blocks a stored payment method or an eShop transaction.

After changing the account restriction, test the child’s Nintendo Account rather than an adult account. If the child uses a separate publisher account inside a game, check that account’s purchase and currency settings too.
When the purchase happens outside the platform store
Many games have their own account systems, virtual currencies, subscriptions, or web checkout pages. A console family setting may restrict the store purchase but not a card saved to the game publisher’s account. The same issue occurs when a child plays on multiple devices and buys through a mobile, PC, or web account.
- Identify the receipt issuer. The merchant name on the email or bank statement usually shows whether the charge came from Microsoft, PlayStation, Nintendo, the game publisher, a mobile store, or another payment service.
- Open the child’s account on that service and look for purchase approval, spending caps, saved-payment removal, PIN, or password-at-checkout options.
- Remove payment methods that are not needed and require the adult password for any remaining purchase.
- Keep the child’s game account separate from the adult’s account; otherwise a platform may treat the transaction as an adult purchase.
Microsoft explicitly separates non-Microsoft billing from its own family spending controls. PlayStation similarly notes that some communications and services inside games are independent of console controls.

Use different rules for different days
Set a school-night cutoff that leaves time for homework and sleep, then allow a different weekend window. Xbox and Windows support day-specific schedules; PlayStation and Nintendo also let families define when and how long play is allowed. A single daily number is easier to configure but may not match your household routine.
Choose allowance versus hard stop
An allowance limits total minutes; a permitted-hours window limits the times at which play may begin or continue. Use both when you want, for example, 90 minutes between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. A warning or alarm gives the child a chance to save; a block or automatic suspension removes the need for a negotiation at bedtime.
Keep a separate rule for purchases
Set a spending value only after deciding what the child may buy. A zero limit or approval-for-every-purchase rule is the clearest starting point. If you permit a balance, review transactions and remaining funds regularly; do not treat a platform’s balance, monthly limit, and external game wallet as interchangeable.
Troubleshooting checklist
The limit does not apply
- Confirm the child is signed in to the account that belongs to the family group.
- Sign out of an adult profile and test again.
- Check that the console or PC is online and has synchronized the latest family settings.
- Verify that the rule targets the actual game or app entry, not a similarly named edition.
- On PlayStation, confirm email verification and a console sign-in; on Nintendo, confirm that the app is still paired with the intended console.
The child can still buy something
- Check whether the charge came from the platform store or an external game account.
- On Xbox, review the child’s Microsoft balance, approval setting, and any attached card.
- On PlayStation, check the child’s monthly limit and remember that purchases draw from the family manager’s wallet.
- On Nintendo, review Nintendo Account eShop restrictions; the Parental Controls app alone is not a purchase limit.
- Remove saved payment methods or require the adult password at checkout.
The child reaches the limit but keeps playing
- Check whether the platform is set to remind or alarm rather than block or suspend.
- Make sure the child has not switched to another account.
- On Nintendo, verify whether automatic software suspension is enabled.
- On PlayStation, confirm the selected expiry behavior in the Family app.
- On Xbox and Windows, review both the app/game allowance and the permitted-hours schedule; either can be the controlling restriction.
Review controls after major account changes
Recheck the family group after adding a console, changing the child’s email address, reinstalling a game, or moving between regions. A new profile can have no restrictions even when the old profile was configured correctly. Review notifications and spending activity at least once each billing cycle, and update the schedule when school hours, holidays, or the child’s responsibilities change.

Do not share them to make a one-time extension; use the platform’s built-in add-time, approval, or temporary-disable function so the exception is recorded and the permanent rule remains intact.
