Set up the child’s supervised console account before buying or launching Grand Theft Auto VI. On PlayStation 5, use PlayStation family controls or the PlayStation Family App. On Xbox Series X|S, use the Microsoft family group and Xbox Family Settings. Set the child’s game-rating limit below the game’s Mature 17+ classification to block it automatically, or keep an approval workflow if you plan to decide case by case. Require approval for purchases, set spending limits, review communication and privacy options, and test the child profile while the adult account is signed out.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The ESRB listing rates it M for Mature 17+ for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol, and In-Game Purchases. Ratings, labels and release information can vary by country and software version, so confirm the current store and family-control screens for your region.

Why parental controls should be set before purchase

Console restrictions are attached to accounts and family groups, not merely to a game disc. If a child normally uses an adult profile, the console may treat that player as the account holder and allow access that the family intended to restrict. Create or select a supervised child account first, then configure the limits on that account.

Grand Theft Auto VI is planned for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, so the relevant controls are managed by those platform ecosystems. A retailer’s checkout setting is not a substitute for console controls: a child might still download a title, use a shared library, install add-ons, communicate with strangers or spend money unless those functions are separately limited.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) says device controls can limit play time, block games by rating and manage in-game spending. Use those controls as technical guardrails, then explain your household rule to the child. A rating filter can prevent access, but it cannot replace a conversation about language, violence, sexual content, drugs, online interaction and spending.

What rating does GTA 6 have?

The ESRB lists Grand Theft Auto VI as Mature 17+. Its descriptors are:

  • Blood and Gore
  • Intense Violence
  • Mature Humor
  • Nudity
  • Strong Language
  • Strong Sexual Content
  • Use of Drugs and Alcohol
  • In-Game Purchases

The official PlayStation information also warns that Grand Theft Auto games regularly contain profanities, violence, sexual themes and depictions of illegal acts and are generally not recommended for children. The rating is therefore a useful threshold for an automatic block, but a parent who is considering an exception should read the full descriptors and make an explicit decision.

Store displays are not identical everywhere. One Xbox listing has shown “RATING PENDING LIKELY MATURE 17+,” while another regional listing displays the complete M 17+ descriptor set. Age classifications can differ outside North America, and console menus can change with firmware or app updates. Check the current store page and family settings for the account’s country rather than relying on a screenshot from another region.

PlayStation 5: configure a child account

1. Use a supervised account, not the adult profile

On the PS5, create or select the child’s supervised PlayStation account in the family-management flow. The child should sign in with that profile for ordinary play. Keep the adult account for the parent’s purchases, approvals and settings. If several children use the console, give each child a separate profile so age, play-time and spending rules apply to the correct person.

2. Open PlayStation family controls

Use the PS5’s family controls or the PlayStation Family App. Sony identifies the Family App as the place to age-restrict PlayStation accounts. Sign in with the family manager account, select the child, and open the controls for games and applications. The exact wording and menu order may differ by country and software version, but the relevant categories are the child’s age level, game-content restriction, spending and communication.

3. Set the game-content level below M 17+

Choose an age or content level that does not permit Mature 17+ games if your goal is to block Grand Theft Auto VI automatically. The system may express this as an age number, an age band or a content-level slider. Select the level below the game’s classification and save it. Do not assume that hiding a store icon removes an already installed game; verify both purchase and launch behavior.

If you intend to consider the game later, leave the child’s account restricted and use the platform’s adult-approval process for any exception. Do not raise the permanent age level simply to permit one title, because that can open other games with the same or lower classification.

4. Require approval for purchases and limit spending

Turn on purchase approval for the child account and set the lowest spending limit that fits your household, including zero if the platform allows it. This should cover the game, downloadable content, subscriptions and in-game purchases. The ESRB specifically identifies spending management as a parental-control function, and the Xbox store flags Grand Theft Auto VI as containing in-game purchases; treat the same spending risk seriously on PlayStation even when the store presentation differs.

Check which adult account receives approval requests and how notifications are delivered. A purchase request that is sent to an old email address or an unused phone will not protect the account in practice. Never share the adult account password with the child as a workaround.

5. Review privacy, communication and play time

Review who can send the child messages, invitations and voice-chat requests; whether the child can join parties; what profile information is visible; and whether user-generated content can be viewed or shared. Set play-time schedules or daily limits if those are part of your family rule. These controls are independent of the game-rating filter, so an account can be blocked from a mature game while still needing separate communication and time limits.

6. Test while the adult account is signed out

Sign out of the adult profile, switch to the child account and try the actions you want to restrict:

Rank #3
Grand Theft Auto V - NL (PS3)
  • GTA 5 SUR PS3 / TAKE TWO - ROCKSTAR GAME
  1. Open the PlayStation Store and search for Grand Theft Auto VI.
  2. Attempt to view, download or purchase the title, depending on what your household rule requires.
  3. Check whether the age restriction blocks the action or generates an adult-approval request.
  4. Open the child’s game library and confirm that an existing copy cannot be launched if your rule is to block play.
  5. Try a test purchase only if you can cancel it safely; otherwise verify the approval screen without completing payment.
  6. Check messaging, party invitations and the play-time behavior from the child profile.

If any action succeeds unexpectedly, return to the family manager account, inspect the child’s age, content and spending settings, and repeat the test after saving.

Xbox Series X|S: configure Microsoft family controls

1. Add the child to the family group

Add the child’s Microsoft account to the family group and make sure the child plays under that profile. Do not use the adult Microsoft account as the everyday Xbox identity. Separate profiles are essential for age filters, approval requests, screen-time schedules and privacy settings.

2. Open Xbox Family Settings

Use the Xbox Family Settings app or the console’s family settings while signed in as the parent or family organizer. Current Xbox guidance places age filters, purchase approval and related restrictions in this family-control system. Labels and screen paths can change, so follow the current prompts shown for your console and region rather than an older menu guide.

3. Choose an allowed rating below Mature 17+

Set the child’s allowed game rating below M 17+ to block Grand Theft Auto VI automatically. Depending on the regional classification system, the control may show an age threshold or a list of ratings. Choose the restrictive option, save it, and check whether the store hides the title, blocks its download or requires an adult decision.

If you are making a deliberate exception, keep the child’s normal rating limit in place and use the family approval workflow where available. That creates a specific adult decision instead of changing the account to allow every mature-rated game.

4. Require purchase approval and control spending

Enable the setting that requires an adult’s approval before the child buys games, add-ons or other digital content. Review account balance and spending controls as well. A purchase restriction should cover both the initial game and later in-game transactions; the Xbox listing identifies in-game purchases for this title.

Confirm that approval requests reach the correct parent account. Test the request path without completing a charge, and keep the adult account’s sign-in credentials private.

5. Review communication, privacy and screen time

Use the family settings to decide who can contact the child, who can invite the child to multiplayer sessions and what profile information is exposed. Set screen-time schedules or daily limits when needed. These settings remain useful even if the title itself is blocked, because they govern other games and services on the account.

6. Test from the child profile

  1. Sign out of the adult profile and sign in to the child’s Xbox account.
  2. Search the store for Grand Theft Auto VI and attempt the action you want blocked.
  3. Confirm that the rating filter blocks access or that an approval request appears.
  4. Check the child’s installed and owned games to ensure an existing copy cannot launch under the restriction.
  5. Verify that a purchase cannot complete without adult approval.
  6. Test a message, party invitation and screen-time limit so you know the non-game controls are active.

Buying the game without bypassing your rules

Rockstar’s support information describes pre-orders for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and says the physical edition contains a download code. A disc or boxed product is therefore not automatically outside digital restrictions: the code still installs software through a console account, and the child account may still be able to launch an installed copy unless its age setting blocks it.

PlayStation lists a November 19, 2026 release date for the PS5 version. Rockstar describes Standard and Ultimate editions, but edition names and upgrade terms can change before release. Verify the current regional listing, edition, price and stock before ordering. If a parent is buying the game for an adult account, keep the child profile restricted and confirm that the child cannot switch to the purchasing account to play it.

Troubleshooting when a restriction does not work

The child can still see or launch the game

  • Confirm that the child is signed in to the supervised profile, not the adult profile.
  • Check that the age or content level was saved on the correct child account.
  • Look for a separately installed copy in the child’s library and test launch behavior after changing the setting.
  • Sign out of the adult account and repeat the test; a signed-in adult profile can make a restriction appear ineffective.
  • Install pending console or family-app updates, then review the setting again because labels and behavior can change with software versions.

The child can buy the game or add-ons

  • Verify that purchase approval is enabled for the child, not only for another family member.
  • Check spending limits, stored payment methods and account balances.
  • Confirm where approval requests are delivered and that the parent can receive them.
  • Remove payment details from the child’s profile if your household does not need them there.
  • Test the purchase flow without finalizing payment.

Communication or screen-time rules are not applying

  • Check the privacy and communication settings separately from the game-rating setting.
  • Confirm the child is using the intended account across console, app and any linked services.
  • Review the time zone, schedule and daily allowance used by the family-control system.
  • After changing a rule, sign out and back in on the child profile before testing again.

Before the first launch: a practical checklist

  • The child has a separate supervised PlayStation or Microsoft account.
  • The account’s game-rating limit is below Mature 17+ if Grand Theft Auto VI must be blocked.
  • Purchase approval is enabled and spending limits are set.
  • Privacy, messaging, party and communication permissions match your family rule.
  • Play-time or screen-time schedules are configured where needed.
  • The adult account’s password and payment details are not shared with the child.
  • The child profile has been tested while the adult profile is signed out.
  • The parent has checked the current regional rating and store listing.
  • Every adult who supervises the console knows where approval requests and family settings are located.

How to make the decision about an exception

An M 17+ label is a clear signal that the game is intended for adults, but families differ in how they apply age guidance. If you are considering access for an older teenager, discuss the ESRB descriptors one by one rather than treating the rating as a single yes-or-no fact. Explain what content is unacceptable in your home, whether online communication is allowed, how much play time is reasonable and whether any spending is permitted.

Keep the technical restriction in place until that conversation is complete. If you approve an exception, use the platform’s adult-approval mechanism or a narrowly scoped account change, then revisit privacy, communication and spending settings. Do not remove every family safeguard merely because one game has been approved.

Release and rating details to recheck

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with the PS5 listing showing November 19, 2026. Rockstar has described physical editions with download codes and Standard and Ultimate editions. The ESRB currently lists the North American version as M 17+, while Xbox store displays can differ by region and may show a pending classification on one listing. Before purchase or first launch, check the current platform store, the rating authority serving your country and the latest family-control app screens. Those checks prevent a stale release date, edition name or menu label from undermining the settings you intended to use.
