ChatGPT’s parental controls work by linking a parent or guardian account to a teen’s account. After the teen accepts the invitation, you can manage content safeguards, selected features, Study hours, and Quiet hours from your own settings. Quiet hours is the control that blocks ChatGPT during a schedule; Study hours guides eligible new chats into Study mode but does not prevent access.
Account linking does not let you read conversations, view chat history, or watch real-time activity. The controls provide guardrails and limited safety notifications, not message-by-message supervision.
What ChatGPT parental controls include
OpenAI’s current system is based on account linking rather than a shared family inbox. A parent or guardian sends an invitation from ChatGPT settings, and the teen must accept it. Once linked, the teen appears under Family members, where the parent can review available controls and schedules.
The controls fall into four practical groups:
- Content safeguards: Reduce sensitive content lowers the likelihood of certain age-inappropriate responses.
- Feature and data settings: Parents can manage settings such as model-improvement participation, saved-memory references, voice, image generation, cloud browser, Codex network access, and Study mode.
- Guided use: Study hours puts eligible new conversations in the main ChatGPT experience into Study mode during a schedule.
- Blocking: Quiet hours prevents access to ChatGPT, including ChatGPT Work, during selected time blocks.
OpenAI documents most available controls as enabled by default. Study mode, Study hours, and Quiet hours are documented as disabled by default. Defaults can vary by setting or region, so check the actual toggle state after linking.

Link a teen account to your parent account
Use the web version of ChatGPT for the documented setup flow. You need the teen’s contact information and access to the parent or guardian account that will manage the link.
- Sign in to ChatGPT on the web with the parent or guardian account.
- Open Settings.
- Select Parental controls.
- Choose Add family member.
- Select Use phone or Use email.
- Enter the teen’s phone number or email address.
- Select Send.
- Have the teen open the invitation and accept it from their account.
- Return to Settings > Parental controls. Under Family members, select the teen’s account to review or change settings.
The invitation does not give the parent access to the teen’s messages. Linking establishes the relationship needed for safeguards, schedules, and limited safety notifications; it is not a mechanism for taking over the teen’s account.
Choose the right control for your goal

Review and change the available settings
After linking, open Settings > Parental controls, select the teen under Family members, and review each toggle. The exact list or default state may differ by region or account, but OpenAI identifies these controls:

Because labels and defaults can change, use the setting’s current description in your account when deciding what to enable. A toggle is a capability or safeguard choice; it is not evidence that a parent can inspect the teen’s conversations.

Block ChatGPT with Quiet hours
Quiet hours is the usage-limit feature to use when the objective is a genuine access block, such as no ChatGPT after bedtime or during school hours.
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings.
- Select Parental controls.
- Under Family members, select the teen.
- Turn on Quiet hours.
- Choose a start time and an end time.
- Add additional time blocks if the schedule needs more than one blocked period.
- Save or leave the settings screen after confirming the schedule is shown for the teen.
Quiet hours covers ChatGPT, including ChatGPT Work. It is therefore the appropriate control for a recurring “block ChatGPT at bedtime” rule. The feature is schedule-based: it does not tell you what the teen did before the block, and linking still does not expose chat history or real-time activity.
Use Study hours for guided homework time
Study hours is a guidance feature, not a timer or lockout. During the scheduled period, eligible new conversations in the main ChatGPT experience start in Study mode. This can encourage a tutoring-style interaction while leaving the account usable.

- Choose Parental controls.
- Select the teen under Family members.
- Turn on Study hours.
- Set the desired study start and end times.
- Confirm that Study mode is available if your family wants the feature enabled outside scheduled hours as well.
Study hours does not apply to conversations with GPTs or to Project conversations. It also follows the account’s existing plan, model, message, and rate-limit rules. OpenAI says it does not add messages or bypass those limits. If your goal is to stop use entirely, choose Quiet hours instead; Study hours only changes how eligible new main-chat conversations begin.

Understand what parents can and cannot see
OpenAI’s privacy statement for linked accounts is explicit: Linking accounts does not give a parent or guardian access to a teen’s conversations, chat history, or real-time activity.
That means the parent cannot open a family dashboard to read old chats, watch a live conversation, or retrieve a transcript through parental controls. The system is designed to apply settings to the linked account without turning the parent into a conversation viewer.
Linking can produce limited safety notifications in specific serious situations. OpenAI identifies three categories:
- Serious concerns about self-harm.
- Concerns related to disordered eating in Chat.
- A violence-related account deactivation.
These notifications do not include chat transcripts and are not real-time monitoring. They should be treated as an indication that a serious safety signal may have occurred, not as a complete report of the teen’s activity or wellbeing.

What Reduce sensitive content covers
Reduce sensitive content is a safeguard against classes of responses that may be inappropriate for a teen. OpenAI lists graphic violence or gore, risky viral challenges, sexual or romantic roleplay, violent roleplay, extreme beauty ideals, unhealthy dieting, body shaming, and related age-inappropriate content among the material it may limit.
The setting lowers the chance of receiving those responses; it does not guarantee that every response will be suitable. OpenAI’s warning is concise: No system is perfect.
Keep the setting enabled when you want the additional filter, but do not describe it to a teen as an absolute content block or as a substitute for conversations about safe use.
How the teen-to-adult transition works
Parental controls are tied to the teen experience. When ChatGPT identifies a linked teen account as 18 or older, it removes the teen protections and ends the parental-controls connection. Scheduled controls no longer manage that account, and the account holder receives full control.
If an adult was placed in the teen experience by mistake, ChatGPT may offer an age review or verification process. The availability and exact prompts are determined by what appears in that account. An adult who completes the transition is no longer governed by the linked teen settings.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
The teen does not appear under Family members
- Confirm that the invitation was sent to the correct phone number or email address.
- Ask the teen to open the invitation from the account that should be linked and accept it.
- Return to Settings > Parental controls and check again after acceptance.
- If the invitation was accepted by a different account, the intended teen account will not be the one managed by your family link.
A schedule is enabled but the result is not what you expected
- For a complete block, verify that you enabled Quiet hours, not only Study hours.
- Check whether the teen is using a GPT or Project conversation; Study hours does not apply to those conversation types.
- Confirm the selected teen under Family members before editing the schedule.
- Review every time block when multiple blocks are configured.
You expected to see messages or live activity
That is not a configuration error. Linked accounts intentionally do not provide conversation history, transcripts, or real-time activity. The available visibility is limited to the controls you set and qualifying safety notifications.
A setting appears different from the documented default
Defaults can vary by setting or region. Treat the toggle currently shown in the linked teen’s control panel as authoritative for that account, and review the list after major ChatGPT updates.
A practical family setup
Families often need more than one control because blocking, guidance, content filtering, and privacy solve different problems. A typical configuration can be built in this order:

- Use Quiet hours for bedtime or other periods when ChatGPT should be inaccessible.
- Explain the privacy boundary to the teen: the parent manages settings but cannot read conversations through this link.
- Revisit the settings when the teen’s needs change and when the account approaches the age transition to adulthood.
This approach keeps the controls aligned with their actual purposes: Quiet hours manages access, Study hours shapes eligible new chats, Reduce sensitive content addresses response categories, and account linking provides safeguards without transcript surveillance.
