Fortnite’s own parental-controls menu is the starting point for communication, content, privacy and time settings. Purchases are different: the six-digit Fortnite PIN is not a universal checkout approval code. To stop V-Bucks purchases, use the payment controls for the child’s console, phone or tablet, or remove saved payment methods from the Epic Games account on a Windows PC.
This guide covers the Fortnite setup, platform-specific purchase routes, time-limit options, Cabined Accounts and the most common ways controls fail.
What Fortnite parental controls can and cannot do
Fortnite has account-level controls for features such as voice and text communication, mature-language filtering, friend requests, privacy and play time. They are configured from the child’s Fortnite account and protected by a parent-created six-digit PIN.

Payment authorization is handled separately. Epic’s purchasing guidance routes families to the store controls for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, iPhone and iPad. On a Windows PC, Epic recommends removing stored payment methods from the Epic Games account. Android restrictions depend on the device and the payment route in use.

Because the controls are split, set both the Fortnite account restrictions and the payment protection that matches the device your child actually uses.
Set up Fortnite’s parental-controls PIN
Use an email address that the parent or guardian controls. Epic says the PIN is required to change the settings later, so do not share it with the child and do not reuse a PIN used for a console, phone or payment card.
- Launch Fortnite and sign in to the child’s account.
- Select the player icon in the upper-right corner.
- Select the three-line menu icon.
- In the right column, select Parental Controls.
- Choose Set Up Parental Controls.
- Confirm an email address that the parent controls. If the Fortnite account has no linked email, follow Epic’s account-upgrade instructions for the console in use.
- Create and confirm a six-digit PIN. Choose one that is different from other PINs and keep it private.
- Choose the communication, privacy and other restrictions you want. Use More Settings on the control screen to see additional options.
Epic’s setup instruction states that the PIN “will be required to change parental controls in the future.” If a child knows the PIN, the account restrictions can be changed without your approval, so enter it yourself whenever settings must be updated.

- Check that you are signed in to the child’s Fortnite account rather than a parent’s separate account.
- Confirm that an email address is linked or complete the console-specific account-upgrade process Epic presents.
- Install pending Fortnite updates and restart the game before trying the menu again.
- Use the Epic Account Portal for account-level options when the game menu does not expose the setting you need.
Stop V-Bucks purchases on each platform
There is no single Fortnite spending-limit screen that overrides every store. Epic’s support page is a routing guide: it separates screen-time settings from payment controls and directs families to the platform that processes the transaction. Store labels and available restrictions can change by platform, operating-system version and region.
Nintendo Switch
Use Nintendo’s family and payment controls for the child’s Nintendo account. Configure purchase approval, password or authentication requirements, and any spending restriction offered for your region. The Fortnite parental-controls PIN still governs Fortnite account features, but Nintendo’s controls decide whether the store transaction can be completed.
PlayStation
Use the PlayStation family-management and payment settings for the child account. Set the appropriate purchase authorization or spending restriction in the family organizer’s account. Check which account is charged: a Fortnite account can be used on more than one device, while the store permission belongs to the platform account.
Xbox
Use Xbox family and payment controls to require approval for purchases or restrict the child account’s ability to spend. Xbox’s screen-time controls are separate from its payment controls, so configure both if you also want a time schedule.

Windows PC and Epic Games purchases
For purchases processed through Epic Games on a Windows PC, Epic recommends removing stored purchasing methods from the Epic Games account. This removes the convenience of a saved card or other payment method; it is not presented as a recurring monthly spending cap.
- Sign in to the Epic Games account used for Fortnite.
- Open the account’s payment or saved-payment-method area.
- Remove each stored payment method that the child could use.
- Sign out of the Epic Games Launcher and browser sessions on shared computers.
- Keep the payment card, digital-wallet credentials and account password inaccessible to the child.
If a payment method remains saved in a separate store, launcher or browser wallet, removing it from Epic alone may not stop that other checkout path.
iPhone and iPad
Use Apple’s Screen Time, Family Sharing and payment controls as appropriate for the family setup. Require approval or authentication for App Store purchases and review which Apple Account is signed in to the device. Fortnite’s own PIN does not replace Apple’s purchase authorization.
Android phones and tablets
Android’s built-in parental-control features vary by manufacturer, Android version and store configuration. Epic notes that Google Family Link works with most Android devices, but you must verify that the chosen rule covers the payment route used for Fortnite. A child could otherwise use a different account, wallet or checkout method that is outside the rule you configured.

Epic’s official purchasing guidance assigns payment controls to Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, Apple and Android device controls, while recommending removal of stored payment methods for Epic PC purchases. Treat the six-digit PIN as protection for Fortnite account settings, not as a universal payment password.
Choose the right purchase-control layer
Use the transaction path, not the device brand alone, to decide where a restriction belongs. A child might use one Epic account on a console, a phone and a PC, but each store can have a separate family account, wallet and authentication rule.

This layered approach also explains why a control can appear to work in one location but not another. A Fortnite setting can restrict communication or privacy while the store still authorizes a purchase, or a store can block spending while a different Epic account remains unrestricted.

Set daily play and creation limits
Epic’s time controls are independent of store-payment controls. They can limit the child’s use of Fortnite experiences and Fortnite Creative or Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN).
Available time choices
- A total daily Fortnite time limit.
- Permitted time windows during which Fortnite may be used.
- A separate Play Time limit for Fortnite experiences.
- A separate Create Time limit for Fortnite Creative creation, UEFN creation and playtesting unpublished UEFN islands.
- An option that determines whether the child can request additional time.
Epic’s announcement, originally published October 1, 2024 and updated September 3, 2026, says the same-account limits follow the child across consoles and devices. The support description defines Play Time as Fortnite experiences and Create Time as creation and related playtesting. A console, phone or computer may impose its own device limit as well; that device rule can further reduce access but cannot expand the Fortnite allowance.
Configure limits
- Open Fortnite’s main menu or sign in to the Epic Account Portal.
- Open the account’s Parental Controls or time-limit area.
- Set the daily total and, if needed, allowed start and end times.
- Choose separate Play and Create limits when you want creative-building time treated differently from ordinary play.
- Decide whether the child may request extra time.
- Save the settings and verify that the child is using the same Epic account on every device.
Parents who opt in can review daily time reports in the Account Portal. Reports and limits apply to the Epic account, while operating-system or console schedules remain separate.
Time-limit pitfalls
- A console’s own schedule can end access before the Fortnite account limit is reached; that is expected because the two controls operate independently.
- Creating or playtesting an unpublished UEFN island counts as Create Time, not ordinary Play Time.
- Signing in with a second Epic account bypasses account-level limits configured on the first account, so check the displayed account name on every device.
- Allowing extra-time requests does not automatically grant extra time; it gives the parent a decision point through the account controls.
Understand Cabined Accounts and age-based restrictions
Epic’s Privacy Policy, last updated April 22, 2026, describes a Cabined Account for users under 13 or under the applicable age of digital consent in their region, whichever is higher. A Cabined Account can play Epic games, but voice chat and real-money purchases are disabled until a parent or guardian completes the required verification and consent process.
The exact features and consent process depend on the child’s age and region. Completing consent can enable additional features, after which parental controls can be changed with a PIN. If your goal is to prevent spending, do not assume that completing verification automatically creates a store spending cap; configure the platform payment controls as well.
Security checks that prevent accidental bypasses
Parental controls are only as strong as the accounts and payment credentials around them. Review these points whenever a child starts using a new device:
- Use a parent-controlled email for Epic and keep access to that mailbox private.
- Do not reuse the Fortnite PIN as a console unlock code, phone passcode or payment PIN.
- Sign out of the Epic Games Launcher and browser sessions on shared computers.
- Remove saved cards and digital wallets from Epic and inspect the browser or operating-system wallet separately.
- Check every Epic, console, Apple or Google account that can open Fortnite on the device.
- Keep purchase passwords and authentication codes out of autofill profiles the child can open.
- After changing a rule, test it on the child’s normal account rather than on the parent’s administrator account.
No physical product is needed to configure these settings. Buying V-Bucks, a gift card or an accessory does not create a parental restriction and can undermine the goal of limiting purchases.

A practical setup checklist
- Use the child’s own Epic account and a parent-controlled email address.
- Create a unique six-digit Fortnite parental-controls PIN and keep it private.
- Review communication, privacy and friend-request settings in Parental Controls and More Settings.
- Set daily, windowed, Play and Create limits if time management is needed.
- Identify every device and account the child uses for Fortnite.
- Configure purchase approval or spending controls on each console or mobile platform.
- On Windows PC, remove saved payment methods from the Epic Games account.
- Check Apple, Google, console and browser wallets for additional saved payment routes.
- Confirm the child cannot see the parent’s store password, card details or authentication codes.
- Review settings after major Fortnite, console or mobile-system updates because menu names and available restrictions can change.
Troubleshoot common control failures
“My child can still buy V-Bucks.”
First identify where the transaction was processed. If it was a console or mobile-store purchase, review that platform’s family payment settings and the account being charged. If it was an Epic PC purchase, remove saved payment methods and check for a different browser, launcher or wallet with its own stored credentials. Also change any payment password the child may know.
“The time limit works on one device but not another.”
Verify that every device is signed in to the same Epic account. Epic’s account-level limits follow that account across devices; a different account will have different settings. Then check the device’s own screen-time schedule, which may impose a stricter independent limit.

Change the six-digit parental-controls PIN from the parent-controlled account and choose a PIN unrelated to device unlock codes or payment PINs. Do not save it in a profile the child can open.
“I cannot find a spending-limit number.”
Epic’s guide does not describe one universal Fortnite spending-cap workflow. Platform controls may offer approval, authentication or a regional spending limit, while Epic’s PC guidance focuses on removing saved payment methods. Use the control that your store and region actually provide rather than treating the Fortnite PIN as a dollar or currency limit.
“Voice chat or purchases are unavailable.”
The account may be Cabined because of age or regional digital-consent rules. Epic says voice chat and real-money purchases remain disabled until the parent or guardian completes the applicable verification and consent process.
What to review after changing settings
Test the arrangement without exposing payment details: sign in on the child’s normal device, confirm that restricted communication behaves as intended, check that the time schedule appears, and verify that a purchase would require the platform approval you configured. Repeat the check on every platform the child uses. Fortnite account controls, console settings and mobile-store rules are separate layers; a gap in any one of them can leave an alternate purchase or access route open.

How do I stop my child buying V-Bucks?
Apply purchase approval or spending restrictions on the store used for the transaction: Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, Apple or the relevant Android controls. For Epic Games purchases on Windows, remove saved payment methods from the Epic account and check browsers and wallets for alternate payment routes.
Can the Fortnite parental-controls PIN set a dollar spending limit?
No. Epic describes the PIN as protection for Fortnite account settings. It is not a universal checkout or currency-limit PIN. Any spending cap or purchase approval comes from the platform or payment account.
Do Fortnite time limits work across devices?
