Allocate sports-data API calls by event state and endpoint behavior—not by applying one interval to every game. First budget the requests shared by all events and workers, then poll more frequently only when the feed can return useful changes and your product needs them. Check the provider’s cache and quota signals, defer lower-priority refreshes as the budget tightens, and stop normal polling when an event reaches its final state.

What determines a useful polling interval?

There is no universal interval for live-sports APIs. The right cadence depends on the endpoint, the provider’s update behavior and cache, the event’s state, your request limit, and how fresh the product needs its scores and status to appear. A request every few seconds may be appropriate for one live feed and waste quota on another.

Keep two clocks distinct: how often the underlying sports data changes, and how long a response may be served from cache. A cache time-to-live (TTL) is not necessarily an exact schedule for data updates. Read the selected endpoint’s documentation and response headers, including Cache-Control, rather than inferring freshness from a TTL alone. Sportradar’s NFL guidance makes this distinction explicit.

Vendor intervals are examples for their own products, not interchangeable industry standards. For example, Sportradar recommends polling its NFL game feeds as fast as every three seconds while a game is in progress; SportsDataIO recommends three to five seconds for real-time score and box-score synchronization and says its minimum cache is three seconds, so polling more often does not improve performance. ALT Sports Data describes five to 15 seconds per event as common for a sportsbook use case, subject to the rate-limit tier. See the respective guidance for Sportradar NFL feeds, SportsDataIO refresh rates, and ALT Sports Data FAQs.

How do you budget calls across events and workers?

Model aggregate traffic for every process using the credential. Counting only one poller hides the requests made by other workers, services, or applications sharing the same key. Also distinguish a per-minute throttle from a daily or monthly quota, and account for any separate credit or row allowance the provider applies.

  1. Identify the limits. Confirm supported leagues, the plan’s quota dimensions and reset window, whether concurrent workers share a key, and whether failed calls count. Limits are provider- and plan-specific and can change; API-SPORTS’ published limits and quota guidance illustrate that daily and per-minute limits can coexist.
  2. Estimate demand. For a simple per-event poll, estimate calls per minute as the number of polled events multiplied by 60 and divided by the interval in seconds. Add list, detail, status, and retry calls, then include all workers. This is a planning estimate, not a substitute for the provider’s own quota accounting.
  3. Reserve capacity. Keep headroom for important live events, scheduled work, and recovery from transient failures. Define which updates can be delayed first—such as stable catalog data or lower-priority events—before the quota is nearly exhausted.
  4. Observe actual usage. Use documented remaining-quota and reset headers, usage endpoints, or provider dashboards. Where multiple workers share a credential, coordinate their budget rather than letting each assume it owns the full allowance. The Odds API specification documents quota-related response signals.

Can one request serve several live events?

When an API supports it, an appropriately scoped list or scoreboard request can be more efficient than repeating a broad request once per event. Fetch event-level detail only for games the product or user actually follows. Some endpoints return useful data for many live events in one response; for example, Odds Data API’s rate-limit documentation describes an in-play events call that can return score and timer information for every live event.

Use the narrowest useful filters and avoid refetching unchanged broad data. Depending on provider capabilities and terms, cached snapshots, deltas, or a stream may reduce repeated requests. A stream is not automatically free of quota or operational constraints: check its authentication, connection, reconnection, and data-use rules before making it the basis of a scheduler. NFLMeta’s authentication guidance is an example of provider-specific access information to review.

How should polling change through an event’s lifecycle?

Treat lifecycle state as an input to scheduling. A future fixture, a game about to start, an active game, and a closed game do not all justify the same request rate. The provider’s status values and endpoint guidance determine the transitions.

  • Stable catalogs and distant schedules: Refresh less often than live scores, or use a shared schedule endpoint where available.
  • Near the start: Increase attention as kickoff approaches if the endpoint’s guidance and product requirements justify it. For its NFL game feeds, Sportradar recommends starting game-feed calls 10 minutes before kickoff.
  • In progress: Poll at the fastest cadence that can yield useful new information and remains within the shared budget. Sportradar’s three-second in-play recommendation applies to its NFL game feeds, not to other providers or endpoints.
  • Final, closed, postponed, or cancelled: Follow the provider’s status transition and stop normal live polling when further updates are no longer useful. Check status on each poll where the provider recommends it; ALT Sports Data advises doing so. Make an additional fetch or use a documented correction mechanism only when the product requires it.

Sportradar’s NFL documentation specifies a 600-second cache after a game is marked closed, and a four-hour cache after seven days. Those are provider- and feed-specific cache details, not general post-game polling rules. See its update-frequency documentation before applying them.

What should the scheduler do when quota is tight or a request fails?

Degrade deliberately instead of allowing every worker to keep polling until requests fail. Preserve the most reader-visible live updates, defer secondary refreshes, and keep the last successful value available with a clear stale indication if a refresh cannot be completed.

HRLORKC Scoreboard Score Keeper Score Flipper for Basketball Tennis Sports
  • Material: PU+ membrane paper; Color: red and blue
  • Size: 14.2inch*6.1inch.
  • Function: Scoreboard with number cards that can keep scores from 1 to 99. Different color of red and blue make it easy to distinguish the scores of different groups.
  • Suitable for: Suitable for indoor and outdoor games, such as volleyball, basketball, table tennis and any competitive sport.
  • Easy to use: The flip design easy to use. No need to write numbers on the scoreboards, just flip the number card will be OK.,its very convenience.
  • Approaching the limit: Use remaining-quota and reset information to slow or pause lower-priority work. Coordinate workers so they share one view of available capacity.
  • HTTP 429 or throttling: Honor Retry-After when supplied, or wait for the documented reset. Resume conservatively; add jitter when several workers share a key to avoid synchronized retries. The Odds API specification describes relevant response behavior.
  • Other errors: Do not blindly retry invalid requests. Check the status and provider guidance, since retrying a request that cannot succeed can spend quota without producing data. API-SPORTS cautions against automatically repeating a request without understanding the cause in its quota-optimization guidance.
  • Stale data: Retain the last-good score or status and make its age visible to the application or reader when refresh is failing; do not present an old value as freshly confirmed.

How do you choose between API approaches?

Compare providers and endpoints against the workload you actually have; a headline interval or quota number alone is not enough. Vendor documentation is useful for understanding that vendor’s service, but it is not independent comparative testing.

Decision factor What to verify
Sport and league coverage Whether the required competitions and event states are supported for your region and intended use.
Freshness by endpoint Update guidance, cache TTL and response headers for each endpoint and lifecycle state.
Quota shape Whether limits are per minute, hour, day, month, key, or shared across workers; check any separate credits or row allowances.
Request efficiency Whether a list or bulk endpoint can replace repeated per-event requests, and how narrowly it can be filtered.
Streams and deltas Availability, terms, reconnect behavior, and whether a stream actually fits the product’s resilience and freshness needs.
Throttling signals Remaining quota, reset time, Retry-After, and documented behavior after the limit is reached.
Rights and operations Commercial-use rights, cost, integration effort, monitoring, and failure recovery.

The documented intervals in the examples above range from three to five seconds for some real-time feeds to five to 15 seconds for a particular sportsbook use case. They describe different providers and contexts, so averaging them into a supposed universal cadence would be misleading.
