On Hyperliquid, choose the perpetual asset, select long or short, select cross or isolated margin when available, set an integer leverage value from 1 up to that asset’s current maximum, and place the order. After the position opens, add a position take-profit/stop-loss (TP/SL) from the position or order form, or from the TradingView chart. Set a trigger price and choose market or limit execution. The trigger uses Hyperliquid’s mark price, not necessarily the latest order-book trade, so a stop can activate at a price that differs from the fill.

Leverage changes how much collateral is posted; it does not remove trading risk. A market stop gives the best chance of an exit but accepts slippage, while a stop-limit gives a price boundary but can remain unfilled during a fast move. Keep every stop safely ahead of liquidation and verify the live limits for the asset before submitting.

What leverage and a stop-loss control

Leverage determines the notional position you can open relative to collateral. Hyperliquid’s onboarding documentation expresses the relationship as position size = leverage amount × collateral. The leverage selector accepts any integer from 1 through the maximum allowed for the selected coin. The perpetual-assets documentation lists asset maximums ranging from 3× to 40×, but the applicable ceiling is asset-specific and can change.

A stop-loss is an exit instruction. It has two separate parts:

  • Trigger: the mark-price level that activates the order.
  • Execution type: a market order, or a limit order with a price boundary.

Because the trigger and execution are different mechanisms, “my stop triggered” does not necessarily mean “I was filled at the trigger price.” A market order can slip, and a limit order can fail to execute if the market moves through it.

Check the live market details before you trade

Asset rules are not universal across Hyperliquid. Before entering a position, open the asset selector and confirm:

  • the current maximum leverage for that perpetual;
  • whether cross margin, isolated margin, or both are available;
  • the displayed mark price and current market conditions;
  • the position size you intend to open; and
  • the stop settings exposed by the current interface.

The published 3×–40× range comes from Hyperliquid’s perpetual-assets documentation, which was last updated about a year before October 16, 2026. The interface, leverage tiers, liquidity, and mark-price behavior can change, so treat the selector and current metadata as authoritative for the order you are about to send.

How to set leverage on Hyperliquid

  1. Select the perpetual asset. In the Hyperliquid trading app, choose the token or perpetual market you want to trade. Do not assume that the maximum shown for another market applies here.
  2. Choose direction. Select Long if you expect the mark price to rise, or Short if you expect it to fall.
  3. Choose margin mode. Select Cross or Isolated when the market permits the choice. Cross is the default and shares available cross collateral across cross positions. Isolated confines collateral to the selected asset.
  4. Enter an integer leverage value. Use the leverage control and choose a whole number from 1 up to the asset’s displayed maximum. A value above that coin’s limit cannot be used.
  5. Set the position size. Drag the size slider or type the position size. Hyperliquid’s onboarding flow states that position size equals the leverage amount multiplied by collateral. Check the resulting notional and required collateral rather than relying only on the leverage label.
  6. Review and place the order. Confirm direction, margin mode, leverage, size, and the displayed mark price, then click Place Order. Wait for the position to open before attaching a position stop if you are using the beginner workflow.

Leverage is not the same as position size

Two traders can select the same leverage and still have very different dollar exposure because their collateral differs. Conversely, a trader can keep the same position size while changing leverage, which changes the initial collateral requirement. The initial-margin formula documented by Hyperliquid is:

initial margin = position_size × mark_price ÷ leverage

For example, using purely illustrative numbers, a position size of 10,000 units at a mark price of 100 with 5× leverage gives an initial-margin calculation of 200,000. The arithmetic demonstrates the formula; it is not a recommendation or a quote for any live market. A higher leverage setting lowers the initial margin under this formula. By inference, less collateral is left to absorb an adverse move before maintenance-margin conditions are reached, so increasing leverage increases liquidation sensitivity even when the position size is unchanged.

Cross margin or isolated margin?

Cross margin

Cross is Hyperliquid’s default mode. Collateral is shared across cross positions, so gains or losses in one cross position can affect the collateral available to support another. This can use account equity more efficiently, but it also means a losing position is not financially separated from the other cross positions.

Isolated margin

Isolated margin confines collateral to the selected asset. That separation can make the maximum collateral committed to that position clearer. Hyperliquid supports adding or removing isolated margin after opening, subject to platform restrictions. Changing isolated collateral changes the amount supporting the position; it does not turn a losing trade into a risk-free one.

How to choose

  • Use cross only when you deliberately want positions to share collateral and understand the account-level consequence.
  • Use isolated when you want a position-specific collateral boundary and the market offers that mode.
  • Whichever mode you choose, size the position so a stop that executes with realistic slippage does not consume more capital than you can tolerate.

How to add a stop-loss

  1. Open the position controls. After the position is open, use the position form, the order form, or the TradingView chart to add a TP/SL order.
  2. Choose stop-loss rather than take-profit. Make sure the exit direction closes the existing position: a long is closed by selling, and a short by buying.
  3. Enter the trigger price. Hyperliquid uses the mark price to trigger TP/SL orders. For a long, the stop triggers when mark price falls below the trigger. For a short, it triggers when mark price rises above the trigger.
  4. Select execution. Choose a stop-market order when exit probability is more important than the exact fill, or a stop-limit order when you need a defined worst acceptable price and can accept non-execution risk.
  5. Specify the amount. Position TP/SL is the simplest beginner workflow and defaults to the full position. If you enter a fixed size instead, that amount does not resize when the position later changes.
  6. Submit and verify. Check the resulting order state and displayed trigger, execution type, and size. If you add to or reduce the position later, review whether the stop still covers the intended exposure.

Stop-market versus stop-limit

Choice What it does well Main risk
Stop Market Highest chance of submitting an exit after the mark-price trigger Fill can be worse than the trigger because of slippage; Hyperliquid documents a 10% slippage tolerance for market TP/SL
Stop Limit Lets you specify a price floor for a long exit or ceiling for a short exit May remain unfilled during a gap or rapid move
Position TP/SL Simple full-position management A fixed-size variant does not resize when the position later changes
Parent-order TP/SL Attaches exits to an entry order Partially filled and canceled parent orders have special placement behavior; the resulting order state must be checked

When a stop-market is appropriate

A stop-market prioritizes getting an exit submitted once the trigger condition is met. It is generally the more forgiving choice when a fast move makes a non-fill more dangerous than an imperfect price. The documented 10% tolerance is a platform setting for market TP/SL, not a promise that every fill will be within 10% of your trigger or that losses are capped at 10%.

When a stop-limit is appropriate

A stop-limit lets you define how far from the trigger you are willing to accept execution. That control is useful when price discipline matters more than certainty of exit, but it creates an additional failure mode: the market can pass through the limit before a matching order is available.

Hyperliquid’s example shows why the two prices should be considered together. Suppose a long stop has both trigger and limit at $10. If price falls from $11 to $9, the stop activates at the mark trigger, but a sell limit at $10 can rest without a fill because the market is already below $10. Setting the limit lower, such as $8 in the documented example, improves the chance of filling somewhere between $9 and $8. The lower limit increases execution probability at the cost of accepting a worse minimum price.

Why the trigger and fill price can differ

Three prices can matter during a volatile exit:

  • Mark price: the price Hyperliquid uses to trigger TP/SL orders.
  • Order-book price: the bids and asks available for execution.
  • Fill price: the price at which your order actually matches.

The mark price can differ materially from the order-book price during volatility. A stop may therefore activate even though the latest trade you are watching appears to be elsewhere. After activation, a market order consumes available liquidity and can slip. A limit order waits for a compatible quote and can remain open instead of filling. Neither stop type guarantees an execution price, and neither guarantees that liquidation is impossible.

Leverage, maintenance margin, and liquidation

Hyperliquid defines liquidation as the point at which account equity falls below maintenance margin. Maintenance margin is tied to the asset’s maximum-leverage tier. The documented range is 1.25% for assets with a 40× maximum leverage to 16.7% for assets with a 3× maximum leverage.

Asset maximum-leverage tier Documented maintenance-margin figure
40× maximum 1.25%
3× maximum 16.7%

Those figures describe the published extremes, not a universal rate for every coin. The liquidation documentation was last updated about eight months before October 16, 2026, so verify the current tier and account details before trading.

Liquidation is based on mark price, which can move differently from the order book. A stop should therefore be placed with a buffer before your estimated liquidation level, not directly on it. No universal buffer percentage is published because the appropriate distance depends on volatility, spread, liquidity, leverage, margin mode, and the possibility that a stop-limit order will not fill. Treat the buffer as a risk-control decision, not as a guaranteed formula.

How to decide on leverage without a universal “safe” number

There is no single leverage value that is suitable for every trader or market. Use this decision sequence:

  1. Start with the loss you can tolerate. Decide the maximum account loss for the trade before selecting leverage. This is a risk limit, not an instruction to use all available collateral.
  2. Choose the stop trigger from market structure and volatility. A stop placed so close that ordinary mark-price movement reaches it can create frequent exits; a stop placed near liquidation leaves little room for execution risk.
  3. Calculate the position size that fits that stop. Use the platform’s displayed mark price, intended size, and leverage to inspect the initial-margin calculation. Do not increase size merely because a higher leverage setting makes the initial margin look smaller.
  4. Check the asset’s maximum and margin mode. A coin capped at 3× has different maintenance-margin parameters from one capped at 40×. Confirm the live values instead of copying settings from another market.
  5. Stress the exit. Consider a market-stop fill that is worse than the trigger and a limit stop that does not fill immediately. If either outcome exceeds your loss limit, reduce size, reduce leverage, widen the available collateral, or reconsider the trade.

Lower leverage can reduce the initial collateral required for a given position only in the mathematical sense that the denominator is larger; the same position still carries the same notional exposure. The safer choice is the combination of position size, stop distance, margin mode, and collateral that keeps a plausible adverse move within your predefined loss limit.

Managing stops when a position changes

Adding to a position

A full-position TP/SL created for the original position is the simplest setup, but a fixed-size stop does not automatically resize when the position later changes. After adding, check whether the stop covers the new total amount. If it does not, amend or replace it according to the controls available in the current interface.

Reducing or partially closing

After reducing a position, verify that the remaining stop quantity does not exceed the open amount and that the trigger still matches your plan. The documented fixed-size behavior means you should not assume the platform will adjust it for you.

Attaching exits to a parent order

Parent-order TP/SL can connect exits to an entry, but partially filled and canceled parent orders have special placement behavior. Check whether the child exit was placed, what quantity it covers, and whether an unfilled remainder still has protection. This verification is essential when an entry is filled in pieces.

Using the API to set leverage

For automated trading or integration checks, Hyperliquid’s updateLeverage action takes three important inputs:

  • the asset index;
  • an isCross Boolean indicating cross or isolated mode; and
  • an integer leverage value subject to that coin’s constraints.

The asset index and margin-mode flag matter as much as the number. An integration can appear to update leverage successfully while targeting the wrong coin or margin mode if those parameters are mapped incorrectly. Validate the response and then confirm the resulting setting against the live trading state before submitting an order. API behavior and asset constraints should be checked against current Hyperliquid metadata rather than hard-coded assumptions.

Troubleshooting common stop-loss problems

“My stop triggered, but the fill was at a different price.”

Confirm that you were watching the mark price, not only the last trade or an order-book quote. Then identify the execution type. A stop-market can slip because it takes available liquidity; a stop-limit can fill at a different price within its permitted range or remain unfilled. The trigger is an activation condition, not a guaranteed fill quote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“My stop never filled.”

If it was a stop-limit, the market may have moved beyond the limit before a matching order was available. Inspect the open-order state and the limit relative to current bids or asks. If the position remains open, decide whether to cancel and replace the order or close manually; do not assume that a triggered but unfilled limit has reduced your risk.

“The stop activated even though the chart looked above my trigger.”

TP/SL triggers use mark price. During volatility, mark price and the order-book or last-trade price can diverge materially. Compare the trigger condition with the platform’s mark-price display.

“My stop covers the wrong amount.”

Check whether you selected a full-position TP/SL or entered a fixed size. Fixed-size variants do not resize when the position changes. Recalculate the remaining exposure after every add or partial close.

“I cannot select my preferred leverage or margin mode.”

The market may have a lower maximum, or the mode may not be available for that asset. Reopen the asset selector and use the current limits shown there. Do not bypass a constraint by entering a larger number in an API request; the leverage value remains subject to the coin’s rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The position liquidated before my stop protected it.”

Liquidation is determined by account equity falling below maintenance margin and uses mark price. A stop placed too close to the liquidation threshold, a rapid move, insufficient liquidity, or an unfilled stop-limit can leave liquidation as the first effective exit. Place stops with meaningful room before the estimated liquidation level and choose execution type with that failure mode in mind. A stop is risk management, not a liquidation guarantee.

Pre-trade and post-trade checklist

Before placing the entry

  • Confirm the exact perpetual asset and its current maximum leverage.
  • Choose long or short deliberately.
  • Choose cross or isolated margin and understand where collateral is shared.
  • Set an integer leverage value within the displayed range.
  • Review position size, mark price, and initial-margin calculation.
  • Decide the stop trigger before submitting the order.

Immediately after the position opens

  • Add a position TP/SL from the position form, order form, or TradingView chart.
  • Confirm that the trigger is on the correct side of the market for a long or short.
  • Choose market or limit execution based on your priority: exit probability or price control.
  • Check the covered quantity, especially if it is a fixed size.
  • Ensure the trigger is meaningfully ahead of estimated liquidation, allowing for volatility and mark-price differences.

After any position change

  • Recheck stop quantity after adding or reducing exposure.
  • Verify child orders after a partial or canceled parent order.
  • Review the live order state rather than assuming the previous stop remains valid.

Practical conclusion

Set leverage only after deciding the position size and acceptable loss. Use the asset selector’s current maximum, choose cross or isolated margin intentionally, and remember that the documented initial-margin formula makes higher leverage more sensitive to adverse movement. Add a stop using the mark-price trigger, then select market execution when avoiding a non-fill matters most or limit execution when a price boundary is worth that risk. Keep the stop ahead of liquidation, monitor the order state whenever the position changes, and never treat the trigger as a guaranteed execution price.
