Give a cloud-hosted AI agent its own governed identity, then grant that identity only the actions and resource access required for its assigned task. Prefer managed or federated identity with temporary credentials where the hosting environment supports it. Keep the agent’s available tools narrow too: IAM controls what its identity can do in cloud services, while tool restrictions limit what the agent can attempt through its application.

The exact setup depends on the cloud provider, the agent’s runtime, and the resources it needs. There is no single cross-cloud role or command that safely fits every agent. Use this sequence to define the access, choose an identity, grant and validate permissions, and keep access under review.

1. Define what the agent is allowed to do

Write down the agent’s job before creating a role or policy. Translate the task into three concrete lists: the cloud resources it must reach, the operations it must perform on those resources, and the actions that could change, expose, or delete data. This prevents a vague job description such as “help with cloud operations” from turning into a broad permission grant.

Build an access checklist

  • Resources: Name the specific service, project, account, or other resource scope the task needs. Avoid granting access across an entire environment when a narrower scope will work.
  • Actions: Identify the operations the task requires. Separate reading information from creating, updating, or deleting it.
  • Impact: Mark actions that are consequential or difficult to reverse. Decide whether those actions need a human approval step in addition to IAM authorization.
  • Tools: List the agent’s callable tools and the downstream services each tool can reach. Do not expose a tool that can perform actions outside the approved task.

For example, an agent asked to summarize information from a cloud resource may initially need read access, not permission to modify or remove that resource. Add write access only if the workflow requires it. Starting with a read-only scope is a practical way to apply least privilege, not a universal provider requirement.

Make the checklist specific enough that another person can compare it with the eventual grant. For each resource, note why the agent needs it and which operation supports the assigned task. If the agent needs to read one resource and update another, record those needs separately rather than treating “access to the project” as one undifferentiated permission. This makes it easier to notice when a requested permission does not have a clear task behind it.

Keep this checklist as the reference for later policy reviews. When the agent’s purpose or capabilities change, revisit the resource and action lists instead of assuming its existing permissions remain appropriate. Google Cloud’s IAM security guidance and Microsoft’s Azure AI security guidance both emphasize limiting access to what is needed.

2. Choose an identity that fits the agent’s runtime

A cloud service needs an identity it can authenticate before IAM can authorize its requests. Give the agent or its workload a distinct, governed identity where the provider supports it, rather than reusing a person’s broad credentials. A separate identity makes it possible to scope, attribute, review, and remove the agent’s access without changing a human’s access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identity and authorization are related but different decisions: the identity establishes which workload is making a request, while its roles or policies determine what the request may do. Choosing a separate identity does not by itself make access safe; the grants attached to it still need to match the task. Conversely, a narrow policy attached to a shared human credential does not provide the same separation and attribution as a distinct workload identity.

The right identity mechanism depends on where the agent runs and which cloud resources it calls. Check the provider’s current requirements for the selected runtime, account configuration, and target service. A feature documented for one environment should not be assumed to work in every runtime or region.

Cloud Identity options described in provider guidance Credential approach and qualification
AWS IAM roles for workloads Roles provide temporary security credentials for workloads; use the current IAM guidance for the workload’s configuration.
Google Cloud Attached service accounts, Workload Identity Federation for eligible environments, and other workload identity methods. Agent Identity is a Google-managed identity for supported agentic workloads. Workload Identity Federation lets eligible external workloads obtain short-lived credentials and is Google’s preferred approach for configuring identities for external workloads. Availability depends on the workload and setup.
Azure Microsoft Entra ID and governed agent identities, where supported Microsoft recommends identity-based authentication instead of API keys where the service supports it. Confirm the identity option for the particular agent and downstream service.

Compare options for your actual deployment using a few practical questions: Is there an identity mechanism supported by this runtime? Are credentials managed or federated, or would the setup require a long-lived secret? Can you limit authorization to the needed resources and actions? Can you attribute activity to the workload and review its access? What prerequisites or availability limits apply? These checks help frame a provider choice without implying that one cloud is universally better than another.

These are provider-documented approaches, not a ranking. They do not establish that every identity feature is available for every agent framework, deployment, region, or account. For Google Cloud, review workload identity methods and the Agent Identity overview. For AWS, see IAM best practices. Microsoft recommends assigning identities to AI agents in its AI platform security guidance.

3. Grant the smallest useful permission set

Attach permissions to the agent’s identity using the provider’s role or policy system. The grant should match the task checklist: the right resources, the required actions, and no broader scope than necessary. Avoid treating a sample policy as production-ready until you understand every permission and resource scope it contains.

Choose narrow roles or policies

  • Prefer permissions limited to the resource or resource group the agent needs over environment-wide access.
  • Grant only the specific actions required for the workflow. Do not add modification or deletion permissions to a read-oriented task for convenience.
  • Use narrow predefined roles or custom roles where they fit the task. Google advises against basic roles in production when a narrower predefined or custom role is available.
  • Keep human administrator access separate from the agent’s workload identity. Do not make the agent an administrator simply to avoid diagnosing a missing permission.

Think through the grant in terms of both scope and operation. A role can be too broad because it covers more resources than the agent needs, because it permits extra actions on the right resources, or both. Reviewing those dimensions separately helps you avoid the false choice between granting broad access and making the workflow unusable.

Microsoft’s Azure AI security guidance recommends restricting agent tools and permissions and reviewing them as capabilities change. AWS recommends granting only the permissions required for workload tasks. These are provider recommendations; the exact policy syntax, role boundaries, and available scope controls differ by cloud and service.

Validate before broadening

Test the agent against the intended workflow and confirm that required calls succeed while out-of-scope actions remain unavailable. If a call fails, identify the specific denied operation and resource before changing the grant. Add only the permission needed to resolve a verified requirement, then test again. This avoids responding to a narrow access problem by granting a broad role.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test negative cases as well as the happy path: check that the agent cannot use its identity to perform a related but unapproved operation, such as changing or deleting data when its job is to read and summarize it. The aim is not only to make the intended task work, but also to verify the boundary the policy is meant to enforce. Keep the test tied to the actual task and the provider’s available validation mechanisms.

Where supported, use provider tools to review a proposed change before applying it. Google Cloud’s IAM security guidance points to Policy Simulator and role recommendations. Those tools are Google-specific; they are not a shared cross-cloud control.

4. Reduce exposure of credentials

Prefer managed identity or federation with temporary credentials when the runtime and provider support them. This reduces the need to store a reusable secret in application code, configuration, or an agent’s accessible context. It does not eliminate the need to scope permissions: a short-lived credential can still authorize excessive actions if its identity has an overly broad grant.

Use managed or federated access where available

Google says Workload Identity Federation allows external workloads to obtain short-lived credentials and calls it the preferred way to configure identities for external workloads. AWS describes workload IAM roles that provide temporary security credentials. Microsoft advises using identity-based authentication instead of API keys where supported. Follow the applicable provider’s setup instructions for the actual runtime; do not assume that one cloud’s identity flow can be copied into another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before choosing a fallback credential, check whether the runtime and target service support a managed or federated option. The best fit can vary even within a provider because the agent’s hosting environment and downstream service matter. Record why a key is needed if no supported identity-based option fits, so that the exception can be revisited if the deployment changes.

If a key is unavoidable

Some integrations may require a key or other long-lived credential. Treat it as a secret: keep it out of prompts, logs, source code, and places the agent can retrieve or disclose; restrict who and what can access it; and rotate it regularly. Google warns that service account keys can be a security risk if they are not managed correctly. Microsoft likewise advises protecting and regularly rotating keys when they are required. Use the provider’s current key-management instructions for implementation details.

5. Put boundaries around tools and consequential actions

IAM is only one layer of an agent’s access. The agent may be able to call application tools that make requests on its behalf, so restrict both the identity’s cloud permissions and the tools exposed to the agent. A tool should not provide a path to an action that the cloud identity or the workflow is otherwise meant to prohibit.

Check the whole path from the agent’s available tool to the downstream resource: which operation can the tool invoke, which identity does the request use, and which resources can that identity reach? Restricting the tool list and narrowing IAM grants address different parts of that path; neither is a substitute for the other. Revisit both when a tool is added or its behavior changes.

For actions with significant impact, add approval and monitoring appropriate to the task. An approval checkpoint can require a person to review an operation before it is carried out; monitoring helps reveal what the agent actually attempted. The exact control depends on the application and cloud service. Microsoft recommends limiting agent tools and permissions, while AWS’s Agentic AI Lens discusses dedicated IAM roles as a maturity practice and addresses access controls for agentic systems. These recommendations do not establish a single mandatory approval design for every agent.

6. Review access as the agent changes

Permissions that fit one version of an agent can become excessive after its tools, purpose, or downstream connections change. Recheck both the identity’s cloud grants and the agent’s callable tools whenever those capabilities change, and remove access that is no longer required.

  1. Compare current access with the task checklist. Confirm that each granted resource and action still serves the approved job.
  2. Review activity where the provider supports it. Use available access activity and audit records to understand which permissions the workload uses. AWS says policies can be generated from access activity found in CloudTrail; treat that as a provider-specific option, not a cross-cloud feature.
  3. Test reductions before rollout where possible. Google Cloud documents Policy Simulator and role recommendations as IAM review aids. Use available provider-specific validation tools to assess changes before applying them.
  4. Remove excess permissions and retest. Verify that the agent’s required workflow still works and that unneeded access has been withdrawn.
  5. Repeat after meaningful changes. Revisit access when the agent gains a tool, begins serving a different task, or connects to additional resources.

Access review is not only a question of whether the agent still works. Compare actual grants with the approved task and check whether the identity has accumulated permissions that no current tool or workflow uses. Where activity records or review aids are available, use them as evidence to inform a change, then validate the reduced access before relying on it.

Maintain a clear owner for the identity and its grants so a person or team is responsible for review and removal when the agent is retired. The provider documentation cited here recommends governed identities and least privilege, but it does not define one universal review schedule; set a cadence appropriate to the workload and its impact. Retirement should include removing the identity’s unneeded grants and ending any credential access that was established for that workload.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set IAM permissions for an AI agent?

Define the agent’s task, resources, and required operations first. Give the workload a distinct provider-supported identity, attach only the narrow permissions needed for those operations, prefer managed or federated short-lived credentials where available, and test both required and prohibited actions. Review grants and tools when the agent changes.

How do I limit what an AI agent can access in the cloud?

Limit access at more than one layer: expose only approved application tools, and scope the agent’s cloud identity to the specific resources and actions required. Start with read access when that is sufficient, add write permissions only for a demonstrated workflow need, and verify that out-of-scope operations remain unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should an AI agent use a human user’s cloud credentials?

Use a distinct governed workload or agent identity where the provider supports it rather than sharing a person’s broad credentials. A separate identity lets you scope, attribute, review, and remove the agent’s access independently.

Are short-lived credentials enough to secure an AI agent?

No. Managed or federated short-lived credentials can reduce exposure of reusable secrets, but the identity’s permissions still need to be narrow. A temporary credential can still authorize excessive actions if its role or policy is too broad.

Do AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure use the same IAM setup for agents?

No single cross-cloud command or role set applies. AWS documents workload IAM roles and temporary credentials; Google Cloud documents options including attached service accounts, Workload Identity Federation for eligible workloads, and Agent Identity for supported workloads; Azure guidance recommends governed identities and identity-based authentication where supported. Check current provider requirements for the specific runtime and target service.

What should I do if the agent gets an access-denied error?

Identify the denied operation and resource, confirm that the task actually requires it, and make the smallest verified policy change. Test again rather than broadening the identity to an administrator or environment-wide role. Use provider-specific review or simulation tools where available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Set IAM for an AI agent by giving it a distinct identity, tying permissions to an explicit task and narrow resource scope, and using managed or federated short-lived credentials where supported. Restrict callable tools as well as cloud grants, add approval and monitoring for consequential operations, and recheck access as capabilities change. The right implementation is provider- and runtime-specific, so validate it against current platform guidance.
