To manage a child’s GameChat access on Nintendo Switch 2, link the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app to the console, then use the app’s GameChat section to approve friends and set video permissions. For users under 16, Nintendo requires these app-based parental controls before GameChat can be used. To join chats with the microphone off, change the separate microphone setting from the console’s C Menu. The controls are split across the app, the console and Nintendo Account settings, so choosing the right place matters: camera permission does not turn off screen sharing, and muting the microphone does not limit who can join a chat.

What you need before setting up GameChat controls

GameChat supports voice chat, video chat, screen sharing, and playing together. Nintendo requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership and a persistent internet connection to use it. Video chat has an additional hardware requirement: a compatible USB camera must be connected. Voice chat, screen sharing, and the parental-control setup do not require that camera.

That distinction can help you decide what to configure. If the goal is to let a child speak with approved friends but not use a camera, set the app’s video permission accordingly; a camera is not required for voice-only GameChat. If the goal is to prevent the child’s voice from being heard immediately after joining a room, use the separate microphone-on-entry setting. Neither camera permission nor microphone muting is a substitute for deciding which friends the child may chat with.

For a user under 16, Nintendo says parental controls must be configured through the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on a smart device before that user can use GameChat. The parent or guardian also needs a phone number registered to their Nintendo Account. Set up the relevant family group and supervised account, install the app on the parent’s smart device, and sign in to the appropriate account. Nintendo’s GameChat setup guide and Switch 2 parental-controls guide cover the account and console setup.

Keep the parent or guardian’s account distinct from the child’s supervised user when setting this up. The app’s GameChat controls are applied to the supervised child you select, and different supervised users can have their own friend approvals and video permissions. If a setting is not appearing where expected, first confirm that the app is linked and that you selected the correct child profile.

Link the parental-controls app to Switch 2

  1. On the parent or guardian’s smart device, install and open the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. Sign in to the appropriate Nintendo Account and generate a link code in the app.

  2. On the Switch 2, open System Settings > Parental Controls, choose the option to set up or link parental controls, and enter the code from the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. If parental controls were first configured directly on the console, open Change Settings and follow the option to set them up through the app instead. Nintendo’s instructions distinguish console setup from controls that require the app.

Once the link is in place, use the app to select the supervised child and open its GameChat section. This is where the child’s GameChat friend approvals and video permissions are configured. The app also provides activity information. By contrast, microphone behavior when entering a chat is set from the console’s C Menu.

After linking, the app provides controls that are not all available from one console menu. Nintendo separates console-level restrictions, app controls for supervised children, and Nintendo Account settings. The parental-controls app is where the child’s GameChat friend approvals, video permissions, and activity information are managed. Nintendo Account settings cover separate account matters such as eShop viewing and purchases, friend suggestions, and third-party information sharing.

Approve or remove GameChat friends for a child

  1. Open the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, go to its GameChat section, and select the supervised child.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Review each friend request with the child and decide whether to approve that person for GameChat. Keep a note identifying the friend and the reason for approval, so the decision can be reviewed later.

  3. To revoke access, select the friend in the app and withdraw GameChat permission. If the child should no longer use GameChat with that person, removing the approval is the relevant step; changing the microphone or camera settings will not remove a friend’s approval.

These approvals are specific to GameChat. Nintendo says children under 16 and supervised users cannot use GameChat with unapproved friends. If no friends are approved, the child cannot invite others to a GameChat room or receive invitations to one. Invitations also require reciprocal approval: both players must approve each other. Approving a child’s friend on one side alone is not enough for an invitation to work. See Nintendo’s approved-friend guide for its instructions.

In practice, a failed invitation can have more than one explanation: the child may not have approved the other player, or the other player may not have approved the child. Check both sides rather than repeating the invitation. If the child has no approved GameChat friends, they cannot send or receive room invitations under this system, even if they can see or interact with those people elsewhere on the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Approvals can also be revisited. The parent can select a friend and withdraw GameChat permission later, so an approval does not have to be permanent. Recording who was approved and why gives the parent a useful reminder when reviewing the list. The app’s activity information can then show which friends were involved in sessions, but it does not provide access to what the participants said.

Choose whether a child can use video chat

In the app’s GameChat settings for the selected supervised user, choose whether to allow video chat or require the parent’s permission for each session. If the setting requires a request each time, the parent receives a permission request for every new video-chat session. This is a session-by-session choice, not a one-time approval that automatically applies to all future sessions. If video chat is disallowed, the child cannot use the camera feature under that setting.

Video chat also requires a compatible USB camera connected to the console. Nintendo names the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera as one compatible example and says it is sold separately. A camera is optional hardware for video: it is not needed for voice-only GameChat, screen sharing, changing parental controls, or setting the microphone to muted on entry. Nintendo’s GameChat parental-controls guide and GameChat setup guide describe the permission and camera requirements.

If you are deciding whether to buy a camera, treat it as an optional accessory for the video feature only. Nintendo’s example is the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera, sold separately; the cited instructions do not establish a current price or require that specific camera if another compatible USB camera is available. You do not need a camera to set up parental controls, approve friends, use voice chat, or share a screen.

Limit the available camera framing options

The parent can constrain which camera framing choices the child may use. The documented options include face only, no background, and no filter. The child can choose only from options the parent has permitted. These are limits on the choices available to the child, rather than a replacement for the parent’s overall decision about whether video chat is allowed.

The parent can also withdraw permission during an active session. That gives the parent a way to end camera permission if circumstances change, rather than relying only on the child to close the camera feature. If the child is allowed to request permission each session, remember that the request concerns the new video-chat session; the parent can decide whether to grant it at that time.

Camera permission is not the same as screen-sharing permission. Nintendo states that the video-camera permission setting does not restrict screen sharing. If the concern is what the child can show through screen sharing, do not assume that turning off video chat also disables that feature. This setting controls use of the camera, not every way content can be shared in GameChat.

Set GameChat to join with the microphone muted

  1. On the console, press the C Button or open the GameChat icon from the HOME Menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Select the user, open Settings, and enable Mute Microphone When Entering a Chat Session.

  3. Join a GameChat room. With the setting enabled, the microphone starts muted; the user must unmute it after joining if they want to speak.

This is useful when the user wants to decide whether to speak after arriving in a room, rather than entering with the microphone already active. It changes the microphone’s starting state for chat entry. It does not block a person from joining, approve or remove friends, disallow video, or prevent screen sharing. Those are separate controls.

This setting controls the microphone’s state when entering a chat. It does not approve friends or control camera access; those are handled separately through the parental-controls app for supervised users. Nintendo also lists settings for automatically adjusting game volume while other people talk and for Chat Audio Panning. These are audio behavior options, not friend or camera permissions. Some settings may require a parent’s involvement for users under 16. See Nintendo’s C Menu settings guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the microphone is active when the child enters a room, return to the C Menu’s GameChat settings and check that the exact mute-on-entry option is enabled for the selected user. The setting is about entering a chat session: when it is on, the user still needs to unmute manually to speak. It is therefore not a permanent microphone ban, and it does not replace adult supervision or the friend-approval process.

What parents can see about GameChat activity

The parental-controls app can show whether the child used GameChat, when a session started, how long it lasted, whether the camera was used, and which friends were involved. Treat this as activity monitoring, not access to chat content: Nintendo says parents cannot access the actual conversations.

These details can help a parent understand when GameChat was used and which approved friends participated. They do not let a parent listen to or read the conversation afterward. That distinction is important when setting expectations with a child: the app can offer a record of selected usage details, but it is not conversation monitoring.

Camera-use information is also not the same as a recording of the video session. Nintendo’s stated activity details include whether the camera was used, the session’s start time and length, and the friends involved. Do not treat the activity view as a transcript, recording, or live view into a conversation.

Which Switch 2 privacy controls belong where?

Where to look Controls relevant to this topic What the control does
Switch 2 console settings System-level parental controls and communication restrictions Configure console-level restrictions; these are distinct from the supervised child’s GameChat friend approvals and camera permissions.
C Menu or GameChat settings on the console Mute microphone when entering a chat; game-volume adjustment while others talk; Chat Audio Panning Change chat-entry microphone behavior and related audio behavior.
Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app Supervised child’s GameChat friend approvals, video permissions and activity information Manage the child’s GameChat access and review the activity details Nintendo makes available.
Nintendo Account settings eShop viewing and purchases, friend suggestions, and third-party information sharing Manage account-level matters that are separate from GameChat session permissions in the app and C Menu settings.

Nintendo’s parental-controls guide distinguishes console controls from features managed through the app or Nintendo Account. If a setting seems missing, check the menu that owns that type of control instead of assuming there is one master GameChat privacy screen.

A practical way to divide the setup is to start with access, then choose the session features, then set the audio behavior. Use the app to decide which supervised child can use GameChat with which approved friends and whether video is allowed. Use the C Menu to decide whether the microphone begins muted. Use the console or Nintendo Account controls for their separate system-level or account-level purposes. That separation avoids changing a setting that sounds related but does not address the issue you are trying to solve.

Common setup snags and what to check

  • The child cannot use GameChat: For a user under 16, confirm the app-based parental controls are set up and linked to the console. Confirm the parent’s account has a registered phone number and that the appropriate supervised child is selected in the app. Also check the service requirements: a Nintendo Switch Online membership and persistent internet connection are required.

  • A child cannot invite or join a particular friend: Check that the friend has been approved for the child and that the other player has approved the child too. Nintendo requires approval on both sides for invitations. If no friends are approved, the child cannot invite others to, or receive invitations to, a GameChat room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A video-chat request appears for every session: This is the expected behavior when the parent has set camera access to request permission each time. If video is not wanted, the parent can disallow it in the app; if the parent allows requests, each new session will need its own decision.

  • Video chat is unavailable although GameChat works: Check that a compatible USB camera is connected. The camera requirement applies to video chat, not to voice chat or screen sharing. The Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is one compatible example and is sold separately.

  • The microphone is active after joining: Confirm that Mute Microphone When Entering a Chat Session is enabled in the C Menu’s GameChat settings for the relevant user. When enabled, the user still has to unmute manually to speak.

  • Turning off camera access does not stop screen sharing: Nintendo treats screen sharing separately from the video-camera permission setting. Camera restrictions alone do not limit screen sharing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A setting is not where you expected: Friend approvals, video permissions, and activity information for a supervised child are in the parental-controls app. The microphone-on-entry option is in C Menu/GameChat settings on the console. Account matters such as eShop purchases and third-party information sharing are in Nintendo Account settings.

  • You want to know what a child said in a chat: The app provides selected activity details, including session timing, duration, camera use, and participating friends, but Nintendo says parents cannot access the actual conversations.

These instructions reflect Nintendo Support pages checked on October 13, 2026. GameChat requirements, compatible accessories, labels, and app navigation can change, so use Nintendo’s linked instructions for the current steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set parental controls for GameChat on Switch 2?

For a supervised child under 16, link the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app to the console using a link code. Then open the app’s GameChat section, select the child, and set friend approvals and video permissions. Nintendo requires app-based parental controls for users under 16 before they can use GameChat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I approve a friend for my child’s GameChat?

In the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, open GameChat and select the supervised child. Review the friend request and approve the person if appropriate. Both players must approve each other for GameChat invitations to work. You can later select a friend in the app and withdraw GameChat permission.

Can I turn off video chat on my child’s Switch 2?

Yes. In the child’s GameChat settings in the parental-controls app, disallow video chat. You can also set video to require your permission for each new session. Camera permission controls video chat, not screen sharing.

How can I make GameChat join with the microphone muted?

Press the C Button or open the GameChat icon from the HOME Menu, select the user, open Settings, and enable “Mute Microphone When Entering a Chat Session.” The user will need to unmute after joining to speak.

Does my child need a camera to use GameChat?

A compatible USB camera is required for video chat. A camera is not required for voice chat, screen sharing, parental-control setup, or microphone muting. Nintendo lists the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera, sold separately, as one compatible example.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can parents listen to or read GameChat conversations later?

Nintendo says parents cannot access the actual conversations. The parental-controls app can show whether GameChat was used, session start time and length, camera use, and which friends were involved.

The Bottom Line

For a child under 16, start by linking the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app and using its GameChat section to approve friends and manage video permission. Remember that invitations require approval on both sides, camera controls do not limit screen sharing, and the C Menu’s mute-on-entry setting is a separate choice. Parents can review selected activity details, but Nintendo says they cannot access the conversations themselves.
