If Epic Games Launcher downloads are using too much bandwidth, set a limit in Download Manager. If you want the fastest transfer your connection can provide, turn off Limit Download Speeds in Settings → Download Settings, then restart the Launcher before trying again.
Removing the cap only removes a Launcher-level constraint. It cannot increase your internet plan, repair an Epic service outage, overcome weak Wi‑Fi, or eliminate pauses while the Launcher installs downloaded files on your drive. The steps below help you change the setting and identify those other bottlenecks.
Quick answer: turn off the Epic download cap
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Use the top-right controls to open Settings. Depending on the Launcher build, the entry may be represented by a settings icon beside your profile or by the profile control itself.
- Scroll to Download Settings.
- Clear the Limit Download Speeds checkbox.
- Close and restart the Launcher, then retry the download.
Epic Games Store Support describes this as something that “may help” when downloads are slow, not as a guaranteed speed increase. If the checkbox was already clear, continue with the troubleshooting checks later in this guide instead of assuming the cap is responsible.

The checkbox controls how much transfer speed the Epic Games Launcher is allowed to use for game downloads. It applies to the Launcher, not to Windows as a whole and not to every device on your network. Clearing it removes the limit that you configured in the Launcher, so the transfer can use more of the capacity available from your connection and Epic’s service.
#1 Best Overall

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
That distinction matters because a download can still be slow with the box cleared. Your internet service, Wi‑Fi signal, router, Epic’s service status, proxy configuration, DNS resolution, device cache, or the storage drive can each affect the result. Epic’s support guidance does not publish a typical improvement, a maximum Launcher rate, or a percentage of users helped by removing the setting.
Choose between unrestricted and limited downloads
There is no universal “best” setting. Choose based on what you need the connection to do while the Launcher is working.
| Goal | Launcher setting | Practical effect | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use as much available download capacity as possible | Limit Download Speeds disabled | Removes the configured Launcher cap. After a restart, the Launcher can attempt to use more of the connection. | It cannot raise your ISP plan, fix service congestion, improve a weak wireless link, or prevent disk-installation pauses. |
| Keep bandwidth available for other people, devices, calls, or games | Limit Download Speeds enabled with a value you choose | Constrains Launcher transfers so other traffic has more room. | Epic does not specify a recommended numerical cap or promise a particular balance at any value. |
A cap is therefore a scheduling and bandwidth-sharing control, not a speed optimizer. If another person is streaming or a work call must remain stable, a deliberate limit can be useful even when your internet connection is fast. If the computer is the only significant user and completion time matters most, disabling the cap is the logical first test.
How to remove the limit from Launcher Settings
1. Open the Launcher settings page
Start the Epic Games Launcher rather than changing a Windows network setting. Look at the top-right area and open Settings. Epic’s support renderings have shown slightly different descriptions for this control: one points to a settings icon next to the profile, while another points to the profile icon. The durable part of the path is the Launcher’s own Settings page; icon placement can vary between builds.
2. Find Download Settings
Scroll through Settings until you reach Download Settings. This is where the Launcher exposes its transfer limit. Do not confuse it with a Windows metered-connection option or a router quality-of-service rule; those are separate controls and are outside this procedure.
3. Clear Limit Download Speeds
Uncheck Limit Download Speeds. Leave the box selected only when you intentionally want the Launcher to obey a cap. Epic does not give a single recommended number, so the appropriate value depends on how much bandwidth your other activities require and what your connection can sustain.
4. Restart before testing
Exit and restart the Epic Games Launcher after removing the checkbox. Epic’s instructions specifically include the restart; changing the control and immediately judging the old transfer session can give a misleading result. Once the Launcher is open again, resume or start the download and observe its behavior for long enough to distinguish a sustained change from a short fluctuation.
Use Download Manager to set or remove a cap
The Launcher also exposes download controls through Download Manager. Open Download Manager from the bottom-left of the Launcher, then choose Download Settings. Epic says this area can set limits for both fresh installs and updates, so it is useful when you want game updates to behave differently from a new installation.

- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
Use this route when you want to intentionally reserve bandwidth rather than maximize throughput. Select the option to limit download speeds and enter the value appropriate for your network-sharing situation. Because Epic does not publish a standard cap, avoid treating any particular number found in a forum or on another computer as an official recommendation.
If you are trying to remove a limit, clear the same control in Download Manager and restart the Launcher before testing. This gives you a second place to verify the setting when the main Settings page is difficult to locate or when an error message points directly to Download Manager.
Fix the IS-INFO-THROTTLED message
IS-INFO-THROTTLED indicates that a download throttle had previously been selected. Epic’s specific correction is:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Download Manager from the bottom-left of the Launcher.
- Select Download Settings.
- Under Download Speed, clear Limit download speeds.
- Restart the Launcher and retry the download.
This message confirms that a throttle setting is relevant; it does not prove that every slowdown has the same cause. If the message disappears but the transfer remains slow, use the broader checks below.
Why the speed graph can drop to zero
A zero reading in the download graph is not automatically a failed network transfer. Epic explains that after some files arrive, the Launcher may stop downloading while it installs those files to the disk. The pause depends on disk speed: a slower drive can take longer to finish writing before the next network transfer begins.
Inspect the graph’s read and write portions rather than looking only at the download number. If disk-write activity is high while network downloading falls to zero, the Launcher is likely processing data already received. Downloading should resume after the write completes. Stopping the Launcher during this phase can interrupt installation work without improving the underlying disk speed.
This behavior is different from a configured speed cap. Disabling Limit Download Speeds cannot make a drive write files faster, so a graph that alternates between network activity and heavy disk writes may be normal for that computer.
Work through Epic’s slow-download checklist
When clearing the cap does not resolve the problem, test one cause at a time. The following are Epic’s suggested diagnostic options; none is guaranteed to increase speed in every setup.

Check Epic’s service status
Look at Epic’s official Status page before changing local settings. An incident affecting downloads, authentication, or content delivery can make a healthy computer appear misconfigured. If the relevant service is impaired, local changes cannot restore normal throughput; retry after the service recovers.
Test wired Ethernet
If the computer and router have Ethernet ports, connect them with an Ethernet cable and repeat the download. Wired networking removes the radio link and can help identify interference, distance, or signal-quality problems. It is an optional diagnostic, not a guarantee: a cable cannot fix an Epic outage, an ISP limit, a disk-writing pause, or a problem elsewhere in the route.
Try another internet connection
Where available, test through a different connection, such as another trusted network. A clear change between connections points toward the original network, router, ISP, or wireless environment rather than the Launcher’s limit. Treat this as a comparison test, not a permanent requirement or a promise that the second connection will be faster.

Clear the device cache
Epic includes clearing the device cache in its troubleshooting checklist. Use the cache-clearing procedure appropriate to your operating system and Launcher installation, then reopen the Launcher and test again. Cache clearing is a diagnostic step; it does not alter your internet plan and should not be presented as a guaranteed speed boost.
Confirm the limit is really off
Recheck Download Settings in the Launcher or Download Manager, especially after an update, a profile change, or an earlier attempt to resolve IS-INFO-THROTTLED. A limit that was intentionally enabled for another download can remain active until you remove it. Restart after changing it so the new state is applied to a fresh Launcher session.
Allow Epic domains through network security controls
Epic recommends making sure its required domains are whitelisted. Firewalls, DNS filters, endpoint security products, and managed networks can interfere with content delivery even when ordinary web browsing works. Add only the domains required by Epic’s current support guidance and your organization’s policy; do not broadly disable security controls to chase a speed reading.
Flush DNS or use a public DNS service
Epic also lists flushing DNS and switching to a public DNS provider as options. DNS affects how your device resolves service addresses; changing it can help when the resolver is stale or unreliable, but it cannot add bandwidth to the connection. Record your existing DNS settings before changing them, and restore them if the alternate resolver is unavailable or restricted on your network.
Disable proxy servers for a test
A proxy can add another connection hop or apply its own policy. Temporarily disable a proxy according to your network’s rules, restart the Launcher, and test again. If the download improves, investigate the proxy configuration with the network administrator rather than leaving a required corporate proxy disabled.

Use Download Manager to control competing downloads
Download Manager is more than a speed-cap screen. It can help you avoid creating your own bottleneck when several titles are queued:
- Prioritize titles: choose which game should receive attention first.
- Reorder multiple downloads: arrange the queue so a smaller urgent update does not wait behind a large installation.
- Schedule automatic updates: move update activity to a time when the connection is less busy.
- Choose whether games may update during gameplay: prevent background updating from competing with an active session when that option is available in your Launcher.
- Configure completion notifications: know when a transfer or installation has finished without repeatedly checking the window.
- Change the default install directory: select the storage location that should receive new installations.
- Review current and recent status: see what is downloading and how the queue is progressing.
- Check download history: inspect activity from the past 14 days.
These controls organize traffic and storage work, but they do not establish that a speed limit is active. A reordered queue can make one title finish sooner while total network capacity stays the same, and scheduling changes when a download runs rather than making the connection faster.

Downloads are consistently slow from the first minute
Verify the checkbox, restart the Launcher, and then compare Wi‑Fi with wired Ethernet or another connection. Check Epic’s Status page before spending time on local changes. A consistently low rate across several healthy tests suggests a connection, service, or route issue rather than a disk-installation pause.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe rate is fast, then repeatedly falls to zero
Watch the disk portion of the graph. Repeated write activity with a zero network value is consistent with the Launcher installing files it already received. Allow the write phase to finish before judging the next transfer interval.
Only updates are slow
Open Download Manager’s Download Settings and check whether a limit applies to updates. The Launcher can manage limits for fresh installs and updates, so a setting that affects one type of activity may explain the difference.
Other household traffic becomes unusable
Enable a deliberate limit and use Download Manager’s scheduling or queue controls. The goal in this case is not maximum Launcher speed; it is a predictable share of the connection for calls, streaming, work, or other devices. Epic does not prescribe a universal value, so adjust based on the behavior of your own network.
The setting is off but the error persists
Follow the IS-INFO-THROTTLED path through Download Manager, clear the control under Download Speed, and restart. If the message remains, continue with service-status, connection, cache, domain, DNS, and proxy checks rather than repeatedly toggling the same box.

What removing the cap can and cannot change
Removing the Launcher limit can eliminate one configured constraint. It cannot exceed the capacity supplied by your internet connection, guarantee a specific megabytes-per-second rate, or prevent every slowdown. Wi‑Fi conditions, ISP congestion, Epic service conditions, DNS or proxy behavior, security filtering, and disk installation work all remain possible causes.

Epic’s support material does not provide a measured speed outcome for disabling the setting. Treat any improvement you observe as specific to your connection and test conditions, not as a published benchmark. Likewise, a lack of improvement does not mean the setting failed; it may simply mean the cap was not the active bottleneck.
A safe order for testing
- Record what the Launcher is doing: steady low speed, intermittent zero readings, or an explicit throttle message.
- Check Epic’s Status page.
- Verify Limit Download Speeds in Download Settings or Download Manager.
- Restart the Launcher after changing the setting.
- Watch the graph’s disk read/write activity during a zero-speed interval.
- Compare Wi‑Fi with wired Ethernet or another available connection.
- Clear the device cache, then review domain whitelisting, DNS, and proxy settings.
- Use queue priority or scheduling if the real problem is competition between downloads and other traffic.
Change one variable at a time when possible. That makes it easier to identify whether the cap, connection, service, configuration, or storage device was responsible for the symptom.
Answers to the questions readers usually ask
Does turning off the limit always make Epic downloads faster?
No. Epic says removing the limit may help. It removes a Launcher constraint but does not increase your connection’s capacity or fix service, Wi‑Fi, DNS, proxy, security, or disk bottlenecks.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do I need to restart Epic Games Launcher?
Yes. Epic’s procedure calls for restarting the Launcher after unchecking the limit and before trying the download again.
Where is the limit if I cannot find it in the main Settings page?
Open Download Manager from the bottom-left of the Launcher and select Download Settings. The same area exposes download-speed controls and is also the documented path for the IS-INFO-THROTTLED message.
What number should I use for a cap?
Epic does not publish a recommended numerical value. Choose a value based on how much bandwidth other people, devices, calls, games, or services need on your connection.
Why does Epic show zero download speed while the drive is busy?
The Launcher can pause network transfer while it installs files that have already been downloaded. Read/write activity in the graph can reveal that disk work is in progress, after which downloading should resume.
