Short answer: add an env[NAME] = value line to the active PHP-FPM pool configuration, usually a pool file such as www.conf. Use a literal value when the pool should define it itself, or env[NAME] = $NAME when PHP-FPM should copy NAME from the FPM master process environment. Then validate the configuration and reload or restart PHP-FPM so new workers receive the setting.
PHP-FPM deliberately does not pass every inherited variable to workers by default. The pool directive clear_env defaults to yes, so an exported shell variable, container variable, or service-manager variable can exist outside PHP yet still produce an empty result from getenv(). The safest general solution is to expose only the variables the application needs.
Put the setting in the active PHP-FPM pool
PHP-FPM reads its main configuration and pool files using PHP’s configuration-file syntax. Environment variables intended for worker processes are configured at pool level, inside the relevant pool section. A global file that is not loaded by the active pool will have no effect, even if the line itself is correctly written.
Installations commonly provide a pool file named www.conf, but the filename and directory depend on the operating-system package and PHP installation. Identify which pool serves the site, then edit that pool’s configuration rather than an unrelated example file or a global setting that does not contain the pool directive.

Literal value
For a value that should be defined directly in the pool, use:
env[APP_MODE] = production
The value after the equals sign is passed to workers as the variable’s value. Repeat the directive for each variable that should be available.
Copy a variable from the FPM master environment
To pass through a variable that PHP-FPM itself receives from its launch environment, prefix the name with a dollar sign:
env[DATABASE_URL] = $DATABASE_URL
env[API_ENDPOINT] = $API_ENDPOINT
This form does not create the source value. The FPM master process must already have DATABASE_URL or API_ENDPOINT in its environment when the service starts. If a value is exported only in an administrator’s interactive shell, a separately managed FPM service normally will not inherit it.
Understand clear_env before changing it
The pool setting clear_env controls inherited variables. Its default is yes. Before starting workers, PHP-FPM clears the worker environment and then adds variables explicitly listed with env[]. This behavior explains why a variable visible to a container, service manager, or shell can still be absent from PHP.
Controlled exposure: keep the default and list variables
With clear_env = yes, add an explicit line for every value the application needs:

clear_env = yes
env[APP_MODE] = production
env[DATABASE_URL] = $DATABASE_URL
This creates a narrow boundary. A newly introduced secret or unrelated service variable is not automatically exposed to every PHP request; it must be deliberately added to the pool configuration.
Broad inheritance: set clear_env = no
Set the directive in the pool when the application intentionally needs the complete environment inherited by FPM:
clear_env = no
The shipped PHP pool template documents that this makes all environment variables available to PHP through getenv(), $_ENV, and $_SERVER. It is a broad exposure choice, not merely a workaround for one missing value. Review it against the deployment’s secret-handling policy before enabling it.
Choose the right approach
| Approach | Scope | Operational behavior | Security consideration | Version or portability note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
env[NAME] = value |
One named variable with a literal value | Independent of the FPM launch environment; easy to see in the pool file | Anyone who can read the pool file may see the value, so protect files containing secrets | Pool-level syntax supported by PHP-FPM configurations |
env[NAME] = $NAME |
One named variable copied from the FPM master environment | Requires the source variable to reach the master through the service manager, container, or other launcher | Exposes only the named value to workers while keeping the source under deployment control | Useful when the same pool configuration is deployed with different runtime values |
clear_env = no |
The whole environment inherited by the FPM master | Minimal pool editing, but every inherited variable becomes available to PHP workers | Greatly widens exposure, including variables not intended for the application | Behavior is defined by the pool template; review package and service-manager differences |
For most production applications, explicit env[] entries are the more predictable option. Use clear_env = no only when broad inheritance is intentional and its contents are controlled.
Pass variables from systemd, containers, or another service manager
The source of a copied value is the environment of the FPM master process, not the environment of an arbitrary shell that happens to be running on the same host. A variable supplied to a container or service manager must be present when that manager launches PHP-FPM. After startup, the pool line env[NAME] = $NAME copies it into each worker.
Why an interactive export often fails
Running an export in a login shell changes that shell and programs launched from it. A long-running FPM service is commonly started by a separate supervisor, so it may never see the export. Put the variable in the service or container’s environment configuration, then ensure the FPM master is recreated or restarted from that environment. Merely opening a new shell does not change already running workers.

Use explicit forwarding when the runtime is shared
For a deployment that uses different environments, keep the pool file stable and provide values through the launcher:
env[APP_ENV] = $APP_ENV
env[LOG_LEVEL] = $LOG_LEVEL
The same configuration can then receive different values in development, staging, and production, provided each FPM master is started with the corresponding variables. If a source variable is absent, the expansion cannot supply the intended application value; verify the launch environment before debugging PHP code.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use PHP-FPM configuration-variable expansion
FPM configuration values can contain environment-variable expansions. For example:
listen = /var/run/php-fpm-${POOL_NAME}.sock
user = ${USER_NAME:-www-data}
group = ${USER_NAME:-www-data}
The ${VAR:-default} form uses default when the variable is unset or null. The PHP manual documents this default-value expansion as supported from PHP 8.3.0. On an older PHP release, do not assume that syntax is available; use a value supplied by the deployment or a configuration form supported by that release.
Expansion in a configuration directive and the pool env[] directive solve related but distinct problems. Expansion substitutes a value while PHP-FPM parses its configuration. The env[] directive determines what is placed in the worker environment for PHP code to read.
Apply a change safely
- Identify the active pool. Determine which pool handles the site and locate its loaded configuration file. Confirm that you are editing the pool section, not a disabled sample or an unrelated global file.
- Choose the exposure model. Prefer an explicit
env[NAME]line for each required value. Useclear_env = noonly when the application truly needs all inherited variables. - Add the directive. Use
env[NAME] = valuefor a literal orenv[NAME] = $NAMEto copy from the master process environment. Keep the variable name consistent with the PHP code that reads it. - Prepare the source environment. When using a dollar-sign expansion, confirm that the service manager, container, or other launcher supplies the source variable before FPM starts. A value that exists only in an interactive shell is not sufficient.
- Test the configuration. Run the PHP-FPM configuration-test command provided by your installed package, if available. Fix syntax errors before attempting a reload.
- Reload or restart PHP-FPM. Use the operating system’s service manager. Running workers do not reread a pool file simply because it was saved; the FPM master and, where necessary, its workers must consume the new configuration.
- Verify from PHP. Use a controlled diagnostic endpoint or a CLI test to check the expected value. Remove or restrict diagnostics after testing, and never write secrets to production output or logs.
Read the variable in PHP
The primary API is:
$value = getenv('APP_MODE');
Depending on PHP configuration and the request context, the same value may also appear in $_ENV['APP_MODE'] and $_SERVER['APP_MODE']. The PHP-FPM pool template specifically documents those APIs when clear_env = no. Code should therefore use the retrieval method your application standardizes on and should handle a missing value deliberately rather than silently assuming that an empty string is valid.

Make diagnostics safe
For a non-secret test value such as an environment name, a temporary endpoint can display the result of getenv(). For credentials, tokens, connection strings, or keys, display only whether the variable is present and, if necessary, a redacted characteristic such as its length. Do not expose the complete value in a browser response, error page, or production log.
Troubleshoot an empty getenv()
The variable is exported, but PHP returns an empty value
Check clear_env first. With the default clear_env = yes, inherited variables are removed unless an env[] entry adds them back. Add an explicit forwarding line, then reload or restart FPM.
The env[] line is present, but the value is still missing
Confirm that the line is in the active pool section and that the edited file is actually loaded. If the line uses $NAME, inspect the FPM master launch environment rather than your shell. An absent source variable expands to no useful application value. Also verify that the service manager completed a successful reload or restart after the edit.
A literal value works but a copied value does not
This isolates the problem to the source environment or its timing. Replace the expansion temporarily with a harmless literal to confirm that PHP-FPM can deliver the variable, then restore $NAME after configuring the service or container to provide the source before startup.

Configuration testing fails
Inspect the reported pool file and line, including bracket and equals-sign syntax. Make sure the directive appears inside a pool configuration and that the value does not contain an unintended line break. Correct the error and rerun the package’s FPM configuration test before reloading the service.
Changes do not appear after editing
Saving a file does not alter existing workers. Reload or restart through the platform service manager, then repeat the controlled PHP check. If the value comes from the launch environment, a restart that recreates the FPM master may be required so it receives the updated source variable.

Security and maintenance considerations
Minimize the worker environment
Every variable made available to PHP can potentially be read by application code, diagnostic tooling, error handlers, or compromised dependencies. Explicit entries document the intended interface between the deployment and the application. They also prevent unrelated variables from appearing merely because a platform added them later.
Protect configuration files
A literal secret in a pool file is still a secret stored on disk. Apply the file permissions and administrative access controls appropriate to your deployment. Forwarding a value with $NAME can keep the value in a service or container secret mechanism, but it does not make the value less sensitive once PHP receives it.
Review broad inheritance after platform changes
With clear_env = no, a change to the FPM service, container image, or host environment can introduce new variables into every worker without any pool-file edit. Reassess this setting when deployment components change, and remove broad inheritance if the application only needs a small, known set.

Explicit application settings
[www]
clear_env = yes
env[APP_ENV] = production
env[FEATURE_FLAG] = invoices-v2
env[DATABASE_URL] = $DATABASE_URL
This pattern keeps the default clearing behavior while allowing two fixed values and one runtime-supplied value. The exact pool name and surrounding directives come from the installation; retain the existing settings and add the entries within the correct pool.
Full inheritance when deliberately required
[www]
clear_env = no
This is intentionally broad. It is appropriate only when the deployment has reviewed the complete inherited environment and accepts making it available through PHP’s environment APIs.
Quick Recap
What to remember
- Environment forwarding belongs in the active PHP-FPM pool configuration and uses
env[NAME]syntax. env[NAME] = valuedefines a literal;env[NAME] = $NAMEcopies a value that the FPM master already received.clear_envdefaults toyes, which is why ordinary shell, container, or service-manager variables may not appear in PHP.clear_env = noexposes the full worker environment throughgetenv(),$_ENV, and$_SERVER; treat it as a deliberate security decision.- Configuration-variable expansion supports the
${VAR:-default}form from PHP 8.3.0 onward according to the PHP manual. - Always test the configuration and reload or restart PHP-FPM before judging whether a change worked.
