Kalshi provides a monthly personalized funding cap, temporary Trading Breaks, and Voluntary Self-Exclusion under Responsible Risk Management. The funding cap limits new deposits, not realized losses, and Kalshi’s reviewed help pages do not document a separate user-set daily or monthly loss-limit trigger. Polymarket says its orderbook has no trading-size limit by design; liquidity and price impact determine what can actually execute.
Which limits can you set?
Prediction-market controls fall into four different categories. A deposit cap controls how much fresh money can enter an account. A trading pause blocks new trading for a period. Self-exclusion blocks market access for a chosen term. A loss limit would automatically stop trading after a specified dollar loss. Those controls are not interchangeable.
| Control | What it restricts | Availability documented here |
|---|---|---|
| Personalized funding cap | New deposits during each calendar month | Kalshi; set under Responsible Risk Management |
| Trading Break | Trading for a day or longer | Kalshi; open positions may not be sellable during the break |
| Voluntary Self-Exclusion | Access to Kalshi markets for a selected term | Kalshi; available through the website, app, or API |
| Automatic dollar loss limit | Trading after reaching a realized-loss amount | No separate user-configurable setting is documented in the reviewed Kalshi material |
| Order-size limit | How many contracts or shares an order may trade | Polymarket says its orderbook has no trading-size limit by design; liquidity still limits execution |
Before choosing a setting, decide whether you are trying to control deposits, time spent trading, account access, or losses. A limit order is another separate feature: it controls the maximum price you will pay for an order, not your total deposits or losses.
How do I set a deposit limit on Kalshi?
Open Responsible Risk Management
- Sign in to Kalshi at
kalshi.com, or open the Kalshi mobile app. - On the website, open the sidebar menu. In the app, open the menu or profile icon.
- Select Responsible Risk Management.
- Choose the personalized funding-cap option and enter the monthly amount you want to permit.
- Review the term and confirmation details, then submit the setting.
Kalshi’s Help Center describes a personalized funding cap as “a maximum amount you are able to deposit to Kalshi in each calendar month.” The cap applies to future deposits as soon as it is set. It is a funding ceiling, not a statement of how much you may lose or how much you may have at risk in open positions.
#1 Best Overall
How the monthly cap behaves
- Calendar-month cadence: the allowance is measured in each calendar month, rather than a rolling 30-day period.
- Future deposits only: money already in the account is not removed, and existing positions are not automatically closed.
- Delayed increases: if Kalshi permits you to increase the cap later, the increase takes effect in the next calendar month, not immediately.
- Locked until expiration: Kalshi says responsibility actions cannot be lifted or changed before their expiration.
- Wire restriction: Kalshi states that wire deposits are not currently accepted for users who have a personalized funding cap enabled.
Set the cap below the maximum you could technically afford, leaving room for ordinary bills and an emergency reserve. If you deposit several times in a month, count the total of all deposits against the same monthly ceiling.
Can I set a daily or monthly loss limit on a prediction market?
Not as a documented Kalshi account setting in the reviewed material. Kalshi’s responsible-trading pages list the funding cap, Trading Break, and Voluntary Self-Exclusion, but do not describe a separate automatic stop that activates after a user-defined realized-loss amount.
This distinction matters:
- A funding cap can stop additional deposits after the monthly allowance is reached, but it does not calculate your net profit or loss.
- A Trading Break stops trading for a period you select, regardless of whether you are up or down.
- Self-Exclusion blocks access for a term and therefore prevents new exposure, but it is not a dollar-triggered stop.
- A limit order specifies the highest price you will pay. It can remain unfilled if the market never reaches that price and does not cap account-wide losses.
To create a personal loss discipline when no automatic loss control is offered, write the rule before trading: for example, stop for the day after a chosen amount of realized losses, stop adding funds when the monthly budget is used, or begin a Trading Break when your rule is breached. Keep a separate record of deposits, withdrawals, realized results, and the value of open positions. These are manual safeguards, not platform-enforced loss limits.

Activate a Trading Break
- Log in on the web or open the app.
- Open the website sidebar, or the app’s menu/profile icon.
- Choose Responsible Risk Management.
- Select Trading Break.
- Choose a break lasting at least one day, confirm the expiration, and activate it.
A Trading Break is time-based. It is useful when you want to stop placing trades without permanently excluding yourself, but it is not linked to a profit or loss number.
Close positions before the break
Kalshi says that positions left open cannot be sold during a Trading Break. Before activating the pause, review every open market and close positions you do not want to hold through the restricted period. A position can still win or lose while you are unable to trade it, so do not treat a break as a guaranteed exit from risk.

Kalshi also states that responsibility actions cannot be lifted or changed before they expire. Check the displayed end time and your time zone before confirming.
How do I block myself from prediction markets?
Use Kalshi Voluntary Self-Exclusion
- Open Kalshi’s website, app, or API access for your account.
- Navigate to Responsible Risk Management.
- Select Voluntary Self-Exclusion.
- Choose the available exclusion term and confirm the request.
Self-Exclusion restricts access to Kalshi markets for the selected term. Kalshi says the request can be made on the website, through the API, or in the app. Open positions cannot be sold during the exclusion period, so close any position you do not want to carry before requesting exclusion.

Does Polymarket cap trade size?
Polymarket’s official help article dated January 11, 2026, says: “By design, the Polymarket orderbook does not have trading size limits. It matches willing buyers and sellers of any amount.” That means there is no documented account setting that simply caps the number of shares or contracts you may request.
“No size limit” does not mean every order will fill at the displayed price. The practical constraints are:
- Available counterparties: your order needs willing buyers or sellers on the other side.
- Orderbook depth: a large order may consume several price levels.
- Price impact: thin liquidity can move the market against your intended entry or exit.
- Partial execution: only part of a desired amount may trade.
Polymarket’s help guidance recommends checking orderbook depth before submitting a large order. The reviewed article does not describe a personal deposit cap, Trading Break, self-exclusion setting, or automatic loss limit. Availability and controls can vary by account and jurisdiction, so verify what your account actually displays.

Limit order versus loss limit
Confusing these terms can produce a false sense of safety. In Kalshi’s limit-order documentation, you specify the maximum price you are willing to pay. If the market never reaches that price, the order may remain unfilled. The order can reduce price slippage on one transaction, but it does not:
- limit how much you deposit during a month;
- stop you after a cumulative dollar loss;
- close every open position; or
- prevent you from submitting additional orders elsewhere in the account.
Use a limit order for execution-price control. Use a funding cap, Trading Break, or Self-Exclusion for account-level access control. Use a written budget and records when you need a loss rule that the platform does not provide automatically.
A practical limits plan when no automatic loss stop exists
1. Define the money you can lose
Choose a monthly entertainment or speculation budget that does not include rent, debt payments, emergency savings, or essential expenses. Treat the amount as money that could go to zero, even when a position currently shows a profit.
2. Convert the budget into a funding cap
If you use Kalshi, set the personalized funding cap at or below that budget. Remember that the cap counts deposits, not realized losses. A withdrawal and redeposit can still create new funding activity, so track the month’s deposits yourself.
3. Set a per-market exposure rule
Decide how much of the budget may be exposed to one event. This reduces concentration risk when several markets depend on the same news or outcome. The platform controls described here do not automatically enforce this rule.
4. Choose a time-based stop
Use a Trading Break when you need a cooling-off period. Close unwanted positions first because they may become unsellable during the break. If a pause is not enough, choose Voluntary Self-Exclusion for a longer, access-blocking term.
5. Record results separately from deposits
Maintain columns for deposit date, amount, withdrawal, entry price, exit price, fees if shown, realized result, and current open exposure. This prevents a deposit cap from being mistaken for a loss report and makes your own stop rule measurable.
6. Review the restriction before confirming
Read the expiration date, whether the action can be changed early, and what happens to open positions. Kalshi’s documented actions persist until expiration, so an incorrect selection can affect your ability to trade or exit for the entire term.
Troubleshooting and edge cases
My deposit was rejected after I set a cap
Check how much you have already deposited in the current calendar month and whether the attempted deposit would exceed the remaining allowance. If the cap was recently increased, Kalshi says the higher amount begins in the next calendar month. Users with a personalized funding cap should also note that wire deposits are not currently accepted.
Best Value
I need to sell a position during a break or exclusion
Kalshi says open positions cannot be sold during either restriction. If you have not activated the action yet, close positions you do not want to carry. Once the restriction is active, you may have to wait for its expiration, leaving the position exposed to market movement.
I expected a loss limit but only see a funding cap
That is consistent with the reviewed Kalshi documentation. A funding cap controls future deposits; it does not monitor realized losses. Add a manual loss rule and use a Trading Break or Self-Exclusion when you need the platform to block access.
My large Polymarket order will not fill
Inspect the orderbook depth and available prices. With no designed trading-size cap, the likely issue is insufficient liquidity, a price that does not attract a counterparty, or price impact that makes the order more expensive than expected. Reduce the size, adjust the price, or accept partial execution only after checking the resulting exposure.
Recommended Free Tools
The menu or options are missing
Confirm that you are signed into the intended account, update the app, and check both the web sidebar and app menu/profile icon. Responsible-trading features can depend on account status and jurisdiction. If the control is still absent, consult the platform’s current Help Center or support channel rather than assuming the setting exists.
Responsible-use support
Platform controls are self-management tools, not guarantees against loss. Kalshi’s responsible-trading material directs users to education and support resources, including Birches Health and the 988 Lifeline. If trading is causing financial or emotional harm, use a longer exclusion, involve someone you trust, and seek qualified support rather than relying only on an account setting.
Bottom line
On Kalshi, open Responsible Risk Management to set a monthly personalized funding cap, activate a Trading Break, or request Voluntary Self-Exclusion. None of those is a documented automatic dollar loss stop, and restrictions can make open positions unsellable until expiration. On Polymarket, there is no designed order-size ceiling; liquidity and price impact are the effective limits. Use the control that matches the risk you are trying to manage, and verify the current options for your account and jurisdiction before confirming.
