Open your gambling app’s Safer Gambling, Responsible Gambling, Account or similar controls, then choose the boundary you need: a deposit limit controls money paid into the account, a loss limit controls net gambling loss, and a time limit or timeout restricts play or access. Select the period, enter the amount or duration, confirm it, and read the activation message. Labels, effective times and change rules vary by operator.
Choose the control that matches your risk
These settings solve different problems. Choosing the wrong one can leave an important gap—for example, a deposit cap does not necessarily measure how much you lose after placing bets, while a timeout is not a spending calculation.
| Control | What it measures | Typical purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Total money paid into the gambling account during a selected period | Stops further funding after the limit is reached |
| Loss limit | Stakes minus winnings or other returns during a selected period | Caps net gambling loss rather than deposits |
| Time limit or timeout | Play time or access, depending on the operator | Creates a break or restricts how long you can gamble |
| Self-exclusion | Access to gambling accounts or services | Provides a longer-term block when ordinary limits are not enough |
Some apps offer all three financial and time controls; others use different names or place them in separate menus. If a control is not visible, search the app’s help area for “safer gambling,” “responsible gambling,” “limits,” “timeout” or “self-exclusion.”
How to set a limit in an app
- Open the account controls. Sign in and open the profile, account or menu area. Select Safer Gambling, Responsible Gambling, Gambling limits or the closest equivalent.
- Select the boundary. Choose Deposit limit if you want to cap money paid in, Loss limit if you want to cap net loss, or Time limit/Timeout if you want to restrict play or take a break.
- Choose the period or duration. Financial controls commonly offer daily, weekly and monthly choices. In Great Britain, the regulator’s RTS 12 requires 24-hour, seven-day and one-month periods to be available. A timeout may use a fixed duration selected by the operator.
- Enter the amount or time. Use the app’s amount field for a financial limit or its duration selector for a timeout. Great Britain’s RTS 12 requires a free-text field so customers can enter a limit rather than choosing only preset buttons.
- Confirm the setting. Submit or save the choice. Read the confirmation carefully: the operator must tell customers when a requested financial limit will come into force.
- Check the whole account. Verify whether the setting applies to every product and bet type or only one game, wallet or channel. RTS 12 requires account-level application in Great Britain.
- Record the setting. Keep the confirmation screen, email or effective date. It gives you a reference if the limit appears not to work.
There is no universal button sequence or activation delay across gambling apps. A confirmation can say that a limit starts immediately, at a stated future time, or under another operator-specific rule. Do not assume a new limit is active until the message says it is.

Deposit limits: what counts and when to use one
A deposit limit caps the amount you pay into the account over a defined period. Under the Gambling Commission’s definition, a gross deposit limit is based on the total amount deposited during that duration. In Great Britain’s second phase of safer-gambling changes, only this gross-paid-in form may be called a “deposit limit”; operators can still offer other controls, including loss limits, under their own names.
Set the period before choosing the amount
A daily amount gives the shortest funding window, while a weekly or monthly amount lets you plan across a longer period. In Great Britain, the required periods are 24 hours, seven days and one month. The app may also offer other periods, but the label should make clear what the period means and when it resets.
Understand the boundary
The deposit limit concerns money paid into the gambling account, not the number of bets or the amount currently at risk in a game. If you need to control net spending after winnings and returns are included, use a loss limit as well, if the operator provides one.

The UK Gambling Commission announced that from 31 October 2025 all gambling businesses must prompt customers to set a financial limit before the first deposit and make the limit easy to review and alter later. RTS 12 also requires an easily accessible facility from registration and a prompt at registration or first deposit. These requirements apply to Great Britain; other jurisdictions can use different prompts, periods and terminology.
The Commission’s 2025 implementation timetable originally expected operators to provide a gross deposit limit based solely on money paid into the account from 30 June 2026. A later implementation update extended the second-phase deadline to the end of September 2026. Because implementation can differ between operators, read the app’s current safer-gambling explanation and confirmation rather than relying on an old screen or guide.
Loss limits: the calculation behind the number
A loss limit measures stakes minus winnings or returns over a chosen period. It is a net-loss calculation, not a deposit total.

Worked example
If you stake £10 and receive £8 back, the loss counted for that activity is £2. If the return is greater than the stake, the result is a win rather than a loss. The operator’s rules determine exactly which stakes and returns are included, so open the help text beside the control before relying on it.

You could deposit £100, win £50 and later lose £40. A deposit limit records the £100 paid in; a loss limit records the net result under the operator’s calculation. Conversely, repeated deposits and withdrawals can make the two figures move differently. Use the control that matches the outcome you are trying to restrict, and use both when you need to control funding and net loss separately.
Terminology to check
Apps may use “loss,” “net loss,” “spend” or another label. Read the definition, period and reset wording. In Great Britain, the regulator distinguishes the gross-paid-in “deposit limit” from other forms such as loss limits, so an operator should not present a different calculation as a deposit limit.
Time limits and timeouts
A time limit or timeout is an access or play break, not a money calculation. Depending on the operator, it can measure time spent playing, restrict a session, or block access for a selected break. The implementation is not standardized, so check whether the setting pauses a game, signs you out, prevents bets, or blocks the account entirely.
Using a timeout
- Open the safer-gambling controls and choose Timeout, Take a break or the equivalent.
- Choose the offered duration and read whether it blocks all gambling products or only the current app.
- Confirm the request and note the start and end time shown by the operator.
- Do not try to bypass the break with another account or channel; use self-exclusion if you need a stronger, longer block.
GamCare’s consumer guidance says an online timeout can block gambling for up to six weeks. That is guidance for the services it describes, not a universal maximum for every operator or country.

Timeout versus self-exclusion
A timeout is intended as a temporary break. GamCare describes self-exclusion as a longer block, normally from six months to five years. Self-exclusion generally prevents access rather than merely warning you about a limit, and ending it early may not be possible. Read the operator’s terms before confirming.

When daily and weekly limits overlap
More than one active limit can apply at the same time. The Gambling Commission’s example is a £10 daily limit combined with a £100 weekly limit: the customer can deposit at most £10 on any day and £70 in that week. The daily rule is more restrictive over seven days, so the weekly £100 ceiling cannot increase the daily allowance.
Use this check whenever you set overlapping limits:
- Identify the length and reset time of each period.
- Calculate the maximum permitted amount under the shorter period across the longer one.
- Apply the lower effective ceiling.
- Check whether the app counts calendar days, rolling 24-hour periods or another window.
The exact combination can vary by operator and by control type. If the app displays an “available,” “remaining” or “next reset” figure, compare it with the confirmation message and account history.
Changing, reviewing or increasing a limit
RTS 12 requires easily accessible facilities to review and alter a financial limit in Great Britain. In the app, return to the same safer-gambling page and open View limits, Manage limits or the equivalent. Confirm which account, product and period you are editing before saving.
Read the effective-time notice for every change. Operators can apply different rules to reductions, increases and timeouts, and there is no single activation or cooling-off rule for every app. A change that appears saved may not be usable until the stated time. If the message is unclear, contact the operator’s support team and ask for the exact effective time in writing.
Review limits after a change in income, a move to another gambling product, or a change in how often you play. Reviewing a setting does not mean raising it; it is also a way to confirm that the existing boundary still matches your budget.

What Great Britain’s RTS 12 requires
RTS 12 is the Gambling Commission’s technical standard for financial-limit facilities. For customers in Great Britain, the relevant requirements include:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- An easily accessible limit facility from registration.
- A prompt at registration or before the first deposit.
- Minimum financial-limit periods of 24 hours, seven days and one month.
- A free-text field for entering a limit.
- Application at account level rather than only to one individual product.
- A message telling the customer when a requested limit takes effect.
The Commission’s 31 October 2025 requirement covers prompting customers before their first deposit and making review and alteration easy afterward. The later second-phase timetable extended the gross-deposit-limit deadline to the end of September 2026. These are Great Britain rules, not a worldwide standard.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the app’s controls are not enough
Use several barriers when a single limit does not reliably stop gambling. GamCare recommends combining a timeout or self-exclusion with technical and financial blocks.
Blocking software
Blocking software can prevent access to gambling websites and apps on devices where it is installed. It is a separate layer from the operator’s own limit, so it can help when you are tempted to open another account or service. Install it on every device you use and protect the settings with a password held by someone you trust.
Bank gambling blocks
Some banks provide a gambling-payment block in their banking app or through customer service. Ask the bank how the block works, which payment types it covers and how long changes take. A bank block complements an app limit but does not replace self-exclusion or support.
Self-exclusion and GAMSTOP
GamCare’s guidance says online self-exclusion through GAMSTOP is free for UK residents, with six-month, one-year and five-year choices. Check current eligibility and terms directly with GAMSTOP or the operator before enrolling. Self-exclusion is stronger than a spending reminder because it is intended to prevent access for the selected period.

Troubleshooting common problems
The limit option is missing
- Search the account menu for “safer gambling,” “responsible gambling,” “limits” or “timeout.”
- Check the operator’s help page for a separate web-account setting.
- Update the app and sign in again, but do not assume an update changes the limit’s effective time.
- Contact support and request the setting in writing if the facility remains unavailable.
The amount saved is not the amount you expected
- Check whether the control is a deposit limit or a loss limit.
- Confirm the period and reset method.
- Look for an account-level setting that covers multiple products.
- Read the activation message and compare the effective time with the account history.
A limit seems to have been ignored
Stop depositing or playing while you check the confirmation, effective time and transaction history. Capture screenshots, note the date and contact the operator. Ask which transactions were counted and under which definition. If you cannot get a clear answer, escalate through the operator’s complaints process and use blocking or self-exclusion tools while the issue is investigated.
You need an immediate break
Choose the shortest available timeout, sign out, activate a bank gambling block and ask a trusted person to help secure funds. If a timeout does not provide enough protection, use self-exclusion rather than repeatedly changing a financial limit.

Questions to answer before confirming
- Is this a deposit, loss or access-time control?
- What exactly is counted?
- Is the period calendar-based or rolling?
- When does the setting start and when does it reset?
- Does it cover the entire account and every product?
- What happens if another daily, weekly or monthly limit is active?
- Can the limit be reduced, increased or cancelled, and what effective-time rule applies?
If the app cannot answer these questions clearly, do not treat the setting as a reliable safeguard until the operator confirms the details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do deposit limits and loss limits mean the same thing?
No. A deposit limit counts money paid into the account. A loss limit counts stakes minus winnings or returns, so the two figures can differ.
How long can an online gambling timeout last?
GamCare says its consumer guidance covers online timeouts of up to six weeks, but duration and operation vary by operator and jurisdiction.
What should I do if I need more protection than an app limit provides?
Layer a timeout or self-exclusion with blocking software and a bank gambling block. UK residents can check GAMSTOP, and the National Gambling Helpline is 0808 8020 133, free and confidential 24 hours a day.
