Microsoft’s current documentation does not define a tenant-wide setting that assigns a default sensitivity label to every Copilot audio overview saved to OneDrive. The supported location-based method is a default sensitivity label on a SharePoint document library—but it works only when the generated file is actually stored in that library. MP4 labeling, Teams meeting inheritance, and Copilot’s documented source-label inheritance are separate mechanisms and should not be treated as substitutes.
Start by identifying the Copilot audio experience and its destination
“Copilot-created audio file” can refer to more than one feature. The control you need depends on which Copilot surface generated the audio, where the user saved it, and what file type was produced. Microsoft’s support pages document saving several audio-overview experiences to OneDrive, but they do not establish that every saved item uses the same storage path or format.
Copilot Notebooks
Copilot Notebooks can create an audio overview in the Microsoft Copilot app or OneNote. The notebook must contain at least one reference file. After generation, the audio player provides a Save to OneDrive action.
Microsoft states that a Copilot license is required to use Copilot Notebooks and that an active SharePoint or OneDrive license is required to create notebooks. Although Notebooks are also available to Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Premium subscribers, Microsoft currently describes the audio-overview feature as available only to commercial Microsoft 365 users signed in with work or school Entra ID accounts. The listed languages are English, Spanish, Japanese, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, and Chinese.

Copilot in SharePoint
Copilot in SharePoint can generate audio overviews for supported PDFs, Word documents, and Teams meeting recordings. SharePoint News posts have a separate audio-overview experience. For document overviews, Microsoft documents a Save Audio Overview to OneDrive option.
The documented document flow requires an English source file with at least 200 words, and generation may take a few minutes. Saving is restricted when the source file is encrypted. These requirements describe the SharePoint feature, not a universal requirement for every Copilot audio experience.
Inspect the saved item before changing policy
Have an administrator open the destination and confirm:
Recommended Free Tools
- Whether the item is in a SharePoint document library or in a user’s OneDrive location.
- The actual file type and extension.
- Whether the item is new, edited, or an existing file that was already present before a library default was configured.
- Whether the source or destination is encrypted.
A SharePoint library default can govern only eligible files in that particular library. It should not be presumed to govern an audio overview that the user saved to OneDrive.
Which labeling path applies?
| Path | Applies to | Main control | What it does | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SharePoint library default | New or edited eligible files in one SharePoint document library | Library settings, configured by a SharePoint site admin | Applies the library’s published default sensitivity label by location | Not retroactive; it does not control files stored elsewhere |
| MP4 sensitivity-label support | MP4 files in SharePoint and OneDrive | Set-SPOTenant -EnableSensitivityLabelForVideoFiles $true |
Enables the documented MP4 labeling capability and manual labeling behavior | Microsoft says MP4 files cannot be labeled automatically or by default through this feature |
| Teams meeting artifact inheritance | Saved Teams recordings, transcripts, and meeting notes | Meeting label policy’s Apply meeting label to artifacts setting, plus MP4 support for recordings | Artifacts inherit the meeting’s sensitivity label when saved | A later change to the meeting label does not automatically change an existing artifact |
| Copilot source-label inheritance | New content created with Copilot in Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook from labeled source items | Copilot’s documented inheritance behavior | Uses the highest-priority label among the source files | The cited documentation does not name Copilot audio overviews |
Configure a default label for a SharePoint document library
Use this procedure only after confirming that the audio file is stored in the target SharePoint library. The setting is location-based; it is not a special Copilot setting.

1. Prepare the sensitivity label
- Create a sensitivity label in Microsoft Purview with the Files & other data assets scope.
- Publish the label to the users who will create or edit files in the library.
- Review the label’s encryption configuration. A library default is not suitable for certain configurations, including user-defined permissions, expiring access, or Double Key Encryption.
The label must be published and available to the relevant users before it can be selected as the library default.
2. Enable SharePoint and OneDrive sensitivity-label integration
Enable support for sensitivity labels on Office files in SharePoint and OneDrive through Microsoft Purview or the documented SharePoint Online PowerShell process. In a Multi-Geo tenant, configure each geo separately. This integration is a prerequisite for the library default; it is not the same setting as MP4 support.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →3. Check library prerequisites
- The library must not have SharePoint Information Rights Management (IRM) enabled. The default-label option is unavailable when IRM is enabled.
- The file must contain content. An empty file is labeled after content is added.
- Use a published label that includes the Files & other data assets scope.
- Do not select Extend protection on download, copy, or move for this default-library scenario. Microsoft documents that option as a separate scenario currently in preview.
4. Select the default in Library settings
- Open the target SharePoint document library.
- Select Settings, then Library settings.
- In the sensitivity-label section, select the published label to use as the library default.
- Save the library settings.
The default applies to new and edited eligible files in that library. It does not rewrite every item already stored there.
5. Allow for the documented timing
- For files created or edited in Office for the web, the library default can apply without delay.
- An uploaded file can take a few minutes to receive the label.
- When a file is created in a Microsoft 365 desktop app and saved to SharePoint, the label is applied after the app closes.
These timing differences are normal. Verify the file after the relevant save or upload operation rather than judging the configuration immediately.
Understand label precedence
The library default does not blindly overwrite every existing label. Microsoft documents the following precedence behavior:

- A manually applied label is not overridden, regardless of its priority.
- An automatically applied lower-priority label can be replaced by the library default.
- An automatically applied higher-priority label remains in place.
- A lower-priority default label from a policy can be replaced by the library default.
- A higher-priority policy default remains in place.
This explains why two files created in the same library can display different labels: a user-applied label, an automatic policy, or a higher-priority policy may take precedence over the location default.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesApplying the default to files that already exist
Because the library default is not retroactive, files already at rest can remain unlabeled. Microsoft points administrators to a service-side auto-labeling policy to apply the default library label to eligible existing files. That is a separate remediation process; configuring the library default alone does not perform it.
Why the OneDrive save action does not prove a library default will apply
Both Copilot Notebooks and the documented SharePoint audio-overview flow expose a way to save audio to OneDrive. A SharePoint library default, however, is scoped to one SharePoint document library. A file saved to a user’s OneDrive location is outside that library unless the administrator has confirmed that the destination is, in fact, a configured SharePoint library location.
Microsoft’s general Purview documentation describes default-label policies and other automatic labeling features, but the reviewed audio-overview documentation does not establish which policy, if any, automatically labels every Copilot-generated audio file saved to OneDrive. Do not present the SharePoint library procedure as a direct OneDrive solution.
MP4 support is a separate capability
Microsoft documents a tenant setting for sensitivity-label support for MP4 files in SharePoint and OneDrive:

Set-SPOTenant -EnableSensitivityLabelForVideoFiles $true
In a Multi-Geo tenant, connect to each geo and run the command separately. This setting enables the documented MP4 scenario; it does not create a default label for Copilot audio overviews.
- MP4 files support manual sensitivity labeling.
- Microsoft says MP4 files cannot be labeled automatically or by default through this MP4 feature.
- An MP4 can inherit a sensitivity label from a Teams meeting.
- An encrypted, sensitivity-labeled MP4 cannot be downloaded.
- Labeled MP4 files can still play in SharePoint, Teams, and Clipchamp.
The audio-overview support pages reviewed do not identify the generated audio artifact as MP4. Confirm the actual extension before treating this setting as relevant.
Teams meeting recordings and notes follow their own inheritance path
A Teams meeting sensitivity label can be applied automatically to saved meeting artifacts when the meeting policy’s Apply meeting label to artifacts setting is enabled and MP4 support is available. The documented artifacts include:
- Meeting recordings and transcripts saved as MP4-related artifacts.
- Meeting notes saved as Loop files.
If the meeting label changes later, the inherited label on an existing recording, transcript, or note does not automatically change. This pathway applies to artifacts governed by a labeled Teams meeting; it should not be generalized to unrelated Copilot Notebook or SharePoint audio overviews.

Do not assume Copilot source labels transfer to generated audio
Microsoft documents sensitivity-label inheritance when Copilot in Word, PowerPoint, or Outlook creates new content from labeled source material. When several source files are used, the highest-priority source label is inherited.

That documentation does not name Copilot Notebook audio overviews or Copilot in SharePoint audio outputs. Therefore, a labeled reference document is not proof that the generated audio receives the same label. Treat inheritance for these audio files as unestablished unless Microsoft documents it for the specific feature or your tenant validation demonstrates it.
A practical validation procedure
Use a controlled test before relying on the configuration for compliance or records-management decisions.
- Create a test label with the Files & other data assets scope and publish it to a test administrator and user.
- Confirm SharePoint and OneDrive Office-file sensitivity-label integration is enabled in the relevant geo.
- Generate one audio overview in Copilot Notebooks and save it to OneDrive.
- Generate one SharePoint audio overview and use Save Audio Overview to OneDrive.
- Inspect each saved item’s exact path, extension, label, and encryption state.
- Create or edit a test file directly in the configured SharePoint library, then observe whether the library default appears immediately, after upload processing, or after the desktop app closes.
- Compare a new file with an existing unlabeled file to confirm that the default is not retroactive.
- Apply a manual label to another test file and verify that the library default does not overwrite it.
- If a file is MP4, test the MP4 setting separately; do not infer its behavior from a non-MP4 audio overview.
Record the result by Copilot surface, destination, extension, and label source. A successful test in one path does not establish behavior in the others.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The library-default option is missing
- Verify that you are a SharePoint site administrator for the library.
- Check whether IRM is enabled; the option is unavailable in an IRM-protected library.
- Confirm that sensitivity-label support for Office files in SharePoint and OneDrive is enabled.
- Confirm that at least one published label includes the Files & other data assets scope.
The Copilot audio saved to OneDrive has no label
- Confirm whether the item is in OneDrive rather than the configured SharePoint library.
- Check the file extension and whether the item is encrypted.
- Allow for upload or processing time before checking again.
- Do not assume that a labeled source document or notebook reference automatically labels the generated audio.
- Review your organization’s separate Purview auto-labeling policies; the reviewed Microsoft documentation does not identify a dedicated Copilot-audio default switch for OneDrive.
A file in the configured library keeps a different label
- Check whether a user manually applied the existing label.
- Compare the priorities of automatic labels and policy defaults with the library default.
- Remember that a higher-priority automatic or policy label remains in place.
- If the file predates the library setting, use the separate service-side auto-labeling process for eligible existing files.
An MP4 cannot be downloaded
Microsoft documents that an encrypted, sensitivity-labeled MP4 cannot be downloaded. Playback remains supported in SharePoint, Teams, and Clipchamp. Check the label’s encryption settings before treating the download restriction as a labeling failure.
Administrator decision checklist
- Destination: Is the audio in the target SharePoint library, or in OneDrive?
- Surface: Was it created by Copilot Notebooks, Copilot in SharePoint, or a Teams meeting workflow?
- Format: What extension does the saved artifact actually have?
- Scope: Does the selected label include Files & other data assets?
- Integration: Is SharePoint/OneDrive sensitivity-label support enabled in every required geo?
- Library state: Is IRM disabled, and does the file contain content?
- Precedence: Is a manual, automatic, or higher-priority policy label taking precedence?
- Timing: Has the upload, edit, or desktop-app close completed?
- Validation: Have you tested the exact Copilot surface, destination, and file type used by your users?
What you can and cannot configure today
You can configure a default sensitivity label for a SharePoint document library and have it apply to eligible new or edited files stored there. You can separately enable MP4 sensitivity-label support, configure Teams meeting artifact inheritance, and use the documented Copilot inheritance behavior for Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook content.
What is not established in Microsoft’s current audio-overview documentation is a dedicated administrator control that assigns a default sensitivity label to every Copilot-created audio file saved to OneDrive. Until Microsoft documents such a control—or your tenant testing confirms a supported policy path—treat OneDrive audio labeling as a destination- and format-specific validation problem rather than as a single Copilot setting.
