On most Android phones, open Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Default digital assistant app, then choose an app that appears in the list. Menu names and locations vary by manufacturer, Android build, installed apps, and region; search Settings for digital assistant app if you cannot find it. The chooser is the authority for your phone: an app not listed there is not confirmed as available through the standard Android setting.
What the Android default-assistant setting controls
Android’s default digital assistant is the primary assistant opened by supported touch or voice activation. That can include a long press of the power button, a Home-button action on phones using three-button navigation, or a swipe from a lower screen corner on gesture-navigation phones. The exact shortcut depends on the device and its navigation or button configuration.
Changing the assistant and changing what a physical button does are related but separate tasks. The default-assistant menu selects the app Android should invoke. A phone’s side-button, power-button, or gesture settings decide whether that action launches the current assistant at all. If a button still opens something else after you select an assistant, inspect those controls separately.
Google’s support documentation describes the default digital assistant as the primary assistant app on the device. On phones using Gemini or Google Assistant, the listed system choice may still be labelled Google, rather than showing Gemini as a top-level Android app.

Check these prerequisites first
- Install the official Android app for the assistant you want to try and sign in if the app requires an account. OpenAI’s Android guidance directs users to the ChatGPT app published by OpenAI and its Play Store listing for current device and operating-system requirements.
- Update the app and Google Play system components where your phone offers updates. The available chooser entries can change with app releases and the phone’s software build.
- Know which activation method you intend to use. Voice activation, a power or side key, Home, and corner-swipe navigation do not all use the same settings.
- Expect the list to be device-specific. Android manufacturers can rename or relocate the menu, and an app can be available in one region or build but absent on another.
Use the standard Android procedure
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Default apps. Some phones place default-app controls directly under Apps or System.
- Tap Digital assistant app. If the label is missing, use the Settings search field and enter
digital assistant app. - Tap Default digital assistant app.
- Select the assistant shown in the list. You may also see None, which disables a default assistant for supported system shortcuts.
- Trigger the shortcut you actually use: hold the power button or Home button, or perform the corner swipe required by your navigation mode. Confirm that the selected app opens.
- If the shortcut does not invoke the selected app, open Settings search and look separately for
power,side button, orgesture. Enable the phone’s Digital assistant action for the relevant button or gesture.
The final chooser list is more reliable than a general compatibility list. If ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity is not offered, the official instructions available for this guide do not establish a hidden menu, universal sideloading fix, or guaranteed workaround for that phone and build.
Gemini: the documented Google setup
Gemini has the clearest phone-specific configuration in Google’s Android documentation. Google says the Google app must be the default assist app for Gemini to act as the primary mobile assistant. Android may therefore show Google in the system chooser even when Gemini is the experience that opens.
Choose Gemini from the Google app
- Open the Google app.
- Open the account or profile menu and enter the app’s Assistant or Gemini settings. Labels can vary by release.
- Choose the option to select Gemini as the assistant, then follow the on-screen confirmation.
- Return to the Android default-assistant setting if the phone asks you to make Google the default assist app, and accept that selection.
Choose Gemini from Android settings
On supported phones, Google’s alternate path is Settings > Apps > Assistant > Digital assistants from Google > Gemini. The intermediate labels are not identical on every manufacturer interface. If you do not see an Assistant entry, use Settings search for Gemini or digital assistant and use the result your phone provides.

Google documents several possible touch methods: the power button, Home, or a swipe from a lower corner. Which one works depends on the phone and navigation mode. For voice, enable Hey Google in Gemini’s settings if the option is offered. Voice Match may be required, and Google notes that Hey Google is not available in every language. A successful selection in Settings does not by itself enable voice wake-up.

Perplexity: select it when your phone offers it
Perplexity announced on 10 April 2025: “Try Perplexity as your default Android Assistant for instant access from anywhere on your phone.” That establishes the company’s intent to support the Android assistant role, but the announcement does not provide a single current menu sequence that applies to every manufacturer.
Standard Android route
- Install or update the official Perplexity Android app.
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Default digital assistant app, using Settings search for
digital assistant appwhen necessary. - Choose Perplexity only if it appears in your phone’s offered list.
- Test your power-button, Home, or corner-swipe shortcut and adjust the separate button or gesture setting if needed.
If Perplexity is absent, treat that as a device, software-build, region, or app-availability limitation rather than evidence that a hidden Android switch exists. The reviewed Perplexity material does not specify a universal alternative path.
Samsung Galaxy S26 integration
A Perplexity update dated 26 February 2026 describes a separate Galaxy S26 arrangement: Perplexity is preloaded, “Hey Plex” or the side button can launch it, and the company describes system-level integration. This model-specific behavior should not be presented as the normal setup for all Android phones. On other devices, use the ordinary chooser and the activation controls exposed by that phone.

ChatGPT: verify chooser availability on your phone
OpenAI’s official Android guidance tells users to install the ChatGPT app published by OpenAI and consult its Play Store listing for current device and operating-system requirements. The reviewed OpenAI material does not provide a procedure for making ChatGPT the system default digital assistant or confirm that it appears in every Android assistant chooser.

- Install the official ChatGPT Android app from the Play Store listing identified as published by OpenAI.
- Complete any sign-in or first-run steps required by the app.
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Default digital assistant app.
- If ChatGPT is listed, select it and test the shortcut you use. If it is not listed, Android has not exposed it as a selectable default on that device and build.
Do not infer support from the app merely being installed. Installation and eligibility for Android’s system-assistant role are separate conditions, and the available list can change after an app or operating-system update.
Claude: system-app features are not the same as a default assistant
Anthropic’s Android documentation describes Claude features that connect with system apps, including messaging, email, calendar, alarms, timers, maps and location, and—subject to stated restrictions—Health Connect. Those capabilities do not, by themselves, confirm that Claude can replace the Android digital assistant.
- Install the official Claude Android app and finish its setup.
- Check Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Default digital assistant app.
- Select Claude only if the device lists it.
- Use the phone’s supported power, Home, or gesture shortcut to test the result.
The reviewed Anthropic documentation does not give a universal procedure for registering Claude as the system default or confirm availability in every current chooser. If it is missing, there is no documented Android-wide menu sequence to force it into the list.

Make the button or gesture open the current default
Power or side button
Some phones assign a long press of the power or side key to the digital assistant; others assign it to the power menu, a manufacturer service, or another action. Search Settings for power or side button, open the relevant shortcut page, and choose Digital assistant if that action is offered. Google describes this action as opening the current default assistant, so changing the default and enabling the action are two distinct steps.

Home button
On three-button navigation, a long press of Home commonly serves as the assistant gesture. If it does nothing, verify that the phone is actually using three-button navigation and inspect its gesture or navigation settings.
Corner swipe
Gesture-navigation phones may launch the assistant when you swipe diagonally inward from a lower corner. The precise corner, animation, and sensitivity are manufacturer-dependent. Look for gesture or navigation in Settings if the swipe is not recognized.
Voice activation
A selected default does not guarantee a voice hotword. Gemini’s documented Hey Google setup can require Voice Match and is unavailable in some languages. Other assistants may expose different voice controls; use the app’s own settings and do not assume that a working touch shortcut proves voice activation is enabled.
Troubleshoot a missing or ineffective assistant
The menu is not where the instructions say
Use Settings search for digital assistant app. Manufacturer overlays change both the nesting and wording of Default apps. Also search for assistant, because some builds place the chooser under an Assistant page rather than under Default apps.

The app is installed but absent from the list
- Confirm that you installed the official Android release and completed its first-run setup.
- Check for app and system updates, then reopen the chooser.
- Verify the phone’s region and user profile if it supports multiple profiles; availability can differ.
- Do not promise that sideloading, clearing caches, or an undocumented intent will make an unlisted app a system assistant. The official material reviewed here does not establish such a universal fix.
The old assistant still opens
- Reopen Default digital assistant app and confirm the new selection was saved.
- Check the separate power, side-button, navigation, and gesture settings.
- Test another activation method. A button may be configured for a different action while a corner swipe correctly invokes the new default.
- Restart the phone if the chooser changed but the shortcut continues using a cached session, then test again.
Voice works differently from touch
Touch activation and a hotword are independent paths. Confirm the assistant’s voice setting, microphone permission prompts, language support, and Voice Match requirements where applicable. If the app opens by button but not by voice, the default-assistant selection itself is not necessarily the problem.
An update changed the available choices
Assistant registration can change when Android, a manufacturer interface, Google Play components, or an assistant app is updated. Recheck the chooser after updates instead of relying on an older screenshot or menu name. The list on the phone at that date is the authoritative answer.
Switch assistants or disable the default
Repeat Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Default digital assistant app and choose another listed app. Selecting None, when offered, removes the default for supported assistant shortcuts; it does not uninstall any assistant app or delete its account data. To restore a button that no longer launches an assistant, revisit the separate power, side-button, or gesture page and select the phone’s desired action.
How to interpret the result
There is no evidence that every named assistant works on every Android phone. Gemini has a documented Google-app configuration; Perplexity has announced default-assistant support and a distinct Galaxy S26 integration; the reviewed ChatGPT and Claude material leaves chooser availability device-dependent. Therefore the practical decision is not a universal ranking of assistants. It is whether the app appears in your phone’s Default digital assistant app list and whether the activation method you use is enabled.
