Use the UPI app linked to your bank account, open that account’s controls, and choose the action that matches your situation: Set UPI PIN for first-time setup, Change UPI PIN if you know the current PIN, or Reset UPI PIN if you have forgotten it. Follow only the verification method shown in your app. Available options and screen labels vary by bank and app.
What a UPI PIN is—and what it is not
A UPI PIN is the 4–6 digit code used to authorize transactions from a linked bank account through UPI. It is a payment authorization credential, so keep it private and enter it only in the legitimate UPI app when you intend to authorize an action.
It is not the same as your debit-card PIN, bank-issued MPIN, or the passcode you use to unlock an app or phone. One credential should not be substituted for another simply because a screen asks for a PIN. Check that you are in the correct bank-account control and follow the wording shown by your bank’s supported UPI app.

NPCI’s UPI FAQ says not to share your UPI PIN with anyone, including someone claiming to be customer support. A bank or app support representative does not need your PIN to help with a problem. Do not disclose it over a call, in a chat, by email, or in a message.

Choose the right action: set, change, or reset
| Situation | Choose | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| You are setting up UPI for this bank account for the first time. | Set UPI PIN | The app asks you to verify the account using an available method, then create and confirm a PIN. |
| You know the current UPI PIN and want a different one. | Change UPI PIN | The app may ask you to verify with the current PIN before entering and confirming a new PIN. |
| You have forgotten the current UPI PIN. | Reset UPI PIN | The app asks you to verify your identity through a supported recovery method; do not keep guessing the old PIN. |
These actions are not interchangeable. In particular, a reset is the recovery route when you cannot provide the current PIN; a change is for when you know it. NPCI’s BHIM guidance shows separate Change and Reset controls. Other apps may use slightly different labels, so look for the equivalent control under the specific bank account.
The practical test is whether you can enter the current PIN: if you can, choose Change; if you cannot remember it, choose Reset. Set is for first-time creation, not a substitute for either option. Always check the selected account first, especially if the app has more than one bank account linked.
Before you begin
- Use the UPI app associated with the mobile number registered with your bank. Open it directly rather than following a link sent by someone else.
- Select the bank account for which you are setting, changing, or resetting the PIN. If more than one account is linked, confirm the bank and account details before proceeding.
- Have access to the verification method the app offers. NPCI’s BHIM setup instructions document use of the last six digits and expiry date of a debit card. The exact prompt and other available methods depend on the app and bank.
- Complete the process privately, on a device you control. Do not read the PIN aloud or send it to anyone.
- If the app does not show the expected option, or verification fails, stop and contact the bank through a verified channel, such as its official app, website, or the number printed on your card.
You do not need to buy a device or service to create a UPI PIN. The relevant tools are your existing bank account, the bank-linked phone and UPI app, and any eligible verification method the app supports. Avoid writing the PIN in a notebook or storing it where someone who can access your phone or belongings could find it.

How to set a UPI PIN for the first time
- Open your bank-linked UPI app. Use the app you normally use for UPI and make sure you are signed in on the phone associated with your bank-registered mobile number.
- Open the bank-account area. Look for an account, bank account, or payment-account section. Select the correct linked account.
- Choose “Set UPI PIN.” This is the first-time setup action. Do not choose Change if no current UPI PIN has been created for the account.
- Complete the verification shown in the app. NPCI’s BHIM instructions describe entering the last six digits and expiry date of the debit card. Your app may present different prompts or another supported method; use only what it actually offers.
- Create and confirm the PIN privately. Follow the app’s displayed digit-length and confirmation instructions. Make sure nobody can see your screen while you enter it.
- Wait for the app’s result. Proceed only when the app confirms the setup or gives a clear next step. If it reports a verification problem, do not share credentials with someone offering to fix it; use the bank’s verified support channel.
Setting a UPI PIN is an in-app bank-account task. Do not confuse it with registering a card PIN at an ATM or changing an app’s screen-lock code.
NPCI’s BHIM setup guidance is a documented example, not a promise that every app has identical prompts. Follow the instructions displayed for your account rather than trying to force a card-based flow if your app offers another supported method. If you have more than one account, a PIN set for one account should not be assumed to cover the others; select the account you mean to use and follow its own controls.

How to change a UPI PIN you know
- Select the relevant bank account in the UPI app’s account controls.
- Choose “Change UPI PIN.” Confirm that the selected account is the one whose PIN you intend to change.
- Complete the requested verification. The app may ask for the existing UPI PIN or another verification step. Prompts vary, so do not assume every app follows an identical sequence.
- Enter the new PIN and confirm it in the fields shown. Keep both entries private and do not send them to anyone for confirmation.
- Wait for confirmation before attempting a transaction. If the change does not complete, follow the app’s stated recovery instructions or contact the bank through a verified channel rather than repeatedly trying variations.
If you cannot recall the current PIN when the app asks for it, stop the change flow and use Reset UPI PIN instead. Guessing risks further failed attempts.
Changing a PIN is not the same as resetting it. The change path is meant for someone who knows the existing PIN and wants to replace it; it may request that current PIN. The reset path is for a forgotten PIN and uses an account-verification method supported by the bank and app. Choosing the right route avoids repeatedly entering a PIN you do not know.
How to reset a forgotten UPI PIN
- Open the controls for the correct linked bank account in your UPI app.
- Select “Reset UPI PIN.” Do not choose Change if you have forgotten the current PIN.
- Use the authentication route displayed by the app. NPCI’s BHIM guide depicts a reset flow using debit-card details and an OTP. Your bank and app determine which route is available to your account.
- Complete verification only inside the legitimate app. If an OTP is sent for the reset, enter it only where the app requests it. Never tell a caller or chat contact the OTP or PIN.
- Create and confirm a new PIN when prompted, then wait for the app to confirm the reset.
NPCI’s 7 October 2025 circular describes UIDAI face authentication as an additional optional method for setting or resetting a UPI PIN, in lieu of card credentials or Aadhaar OTP. This is not a universal option: the bank and app must implement it, and applicable device and security conditions must be validated. If your app does not offer face authentication, use a method it supports or ask the bank for help.
Do not interpret the existence of an optional authentication route as a guarantee that it is available for your account or device. Available methods depend on implementation and validation, and the app’s actual prompts are the guide to what you can use. If a reset method fails, stop rather than repeatedly experimenting with credentials or responding to an unsolicited offer of help.
How to set a UPI PIN with the bank directly
Setting or recovering a UPI PIN is generally presented as an in-app task associated with the selected bank account. NPCI’s BHIM setup guidance documents debit-card details as part of its setup route, while its reset guidance shows debit-card details and OTP. The exact process is not identical across banks and apps, and the available evidence does not establish one universal branch, ATM, or phone procedure for every bank.

If you need help outside the app, ask your bank through an official, verified channel which supported route applies to your account. Do not give an employee, caller, or chat contact your UPI PIN, OTP, or full card credentials. A person who asks for your PIN is not a safe route to resolving the issue.

Safety rules that prevent common UPI scams
Never disclose the PIN or OTP
NPCI explicitly warns users not to share the UPI PIN and says bank customer support will never ask for it. Treat a request for the PIN as fraudulent even if the person claims they are reversing a failed payment, arranging a refund, or verifying your account.
Verification codes are also sensitive. Enter an OTP only into the app when you have initiated the relevant process and the app requests it. Do not dictate it to a caller or forward it in a message. A support conversation does not make it safe to reveal credentials.
You do not enter a PIN to receive money
NPCI’s fraud-awareness guidance explains that scanning a QR code and entering a UPI PIN is meant for making a payment, not receiving one. Do not scan an unsolicited QR code or enter your PIN to collect a supposed reward, refund, or incoming transfer. If you are unsure what an app prompt will authorize, stop before entering the PIN.
A QR code is not a way to prove your identity in order to accept money. If someone tells you to scan one and enter your PIN to receive funds, cancel the action. Reopen your UPI app directly if you need to check account activity, rather than following the other person’s directions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not guess repeatedly
NPCI says that multiple incorrect UPI PIN entries may cause a bank to temporarily block sending money through UPI. The attempt threshold and blocking behavior vary by bank. If you are unsure of the PIN, use the reset route instead of trying likely combinations.
If you have already made several incorrect attempts, do not assume that another guess will solve the problem. Use the reset option if available, or ask the bank through an official channel what to do if sending has been temporarily blocked. A reset may require the bank’s supported verification method.
Act promptly if your phone is lost
If someone else may have access to a lost phone, NPCI advises blocking the mobile number and contacting the bank. Secure the device and account promptly; do not wait to see whether an unauthorized transaction occurs.
Do not assume that the phone’s screen lock alone resolves the risk. Contact the bank using verified details and take the steps it advises for protecting the account and mobile number. Never share the UPI PIN with someone who contacts you while claiming to help secure the lost phone.
Troubleshooting when setup or recovery does not work
- The option is missing: Check that you selected the intended bank account and are using the bank-linked UPI app. Menu wording and account eligibility vary. If the control still is not available, ask the bank through a verified channel.
- Your card details are rejected: Recheck that you are using the details requested for the selected account and enter them only in the official app. Do not send card details to a person who contacts you. If the app continues to reject verification, stop retrying and contact the bank.
- An OTP or verification step fails: Follow the app’s displayed instructions and confirm with the bank what methods are supported for your account. Do not reveal an OTP to anyone who offers assistance.
- You entered the wrong PIN more than once: Stop guessing. Depending on the bank, repeated wrong entries can temporarily block sending money via UPI. Use Reset UPI PIN if you have forgotten the code, or contact your bank through an official channel if the account appears blocked.
- You are unsure whether a prompt is safe: Cancel or leave the flow without entering your PIN. Reopen the app directly and navigate to the bank account yourself; for unresolved concerns, contact the bank using verified details.
Questions people ask about UPI PINs
NPCI’s official UPI FAQ, accessed in 2026, addresses common concerns about forgotten PINs, wrong entries, and using a phone handled by someone else. The safest answer depends on whether you are creating a PIN, changing one you know, or recovering one you have forgotten.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I forget my UPI PIN?
Use Reset UPI PIN for the correct linked bank account in your UPI app. Follow the authentication route the app supports; NPCI’s BHIM guide depicts debit-card details and an OTP. Do not keep guessing the old PIN, because repeated incorrect entries may temporarily block sending money through UPI, depending on the bank.
How do I set my UPI PIN with the bank directly?
UPI PIN setup is generally presented through the bank-account controls in a supported UPI app. NPCI’s BHIM setup instructions document entering the last six digits and expiry date of a debit card, but prompts and methods vary. Ask your bank through an official channel which route applies to your account; never disclose your UPI PIN or OTP to an employee or caller.
What happens if I enter the wrong UPI PIN during a transaction?
Multiple wrong entries may cause your bank to temporarily block sending money through UPI. NPCI says the threshold and blocking behavior vary by bank. Stop guessing and use Reset UPI PIN if you have forgotten the code, or contact the bank through a verified channel if sending appears blocked.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I enter my UPI PIN to receive a refund or payment?
No. NPCI’s fraud-awareness guidance says scanning a QR code and entering a UPI PIN is for making payments, not receiving them. Do not scan an unsolicited reward or refund QR code or enter your PIN to collect money.
Will there be a security breach if another person uses my mobile?
Treat a phone used by someone else, or a lost phone, as a security concern. Do not disclose your PIN, secure the device and account, and contact your bank through a verified channel if another person may have access. NPCI advises blocking the mobile number and contacting the bank if your phone is lost.
Is face authentication available for every UPI PIN reset?
No. NPCI’s circular dated 7 October 2025 describes UIDAI face authentication as an optional method for setting or resetting a UPI PIN. It depends on the bank and app implementing it and validating applicable device and security conditions. Use only a method actually offered in your app.
The Bottom Line
Choose Set for first-time setup, Change when you know your current UPI PIN, and Reset when you have forgotten it. Select the right linked account, complete only the verification shown in your bank-supported UPI app, and keep your PIN and OTP private. A QR code and UPI PIN authorize a payment, not the receipt of money.
