Give Claude three things in the opening message: a clearly defined task, the limits it must respect, and the exact form of the answer you want. Then put each instruction at the scope where it belongs: profile preferences for account-wide habits, Project instructions and knowledge for recurring work, and a Style for tone and presentation. For difficult jobs, name the tool and source to use, provide only the context that matters, and split the work into stages. These controls make expectations clearer; they do not guarantee perfect adherence, so a short correction is still the fastest fix when a reply wanders.
What a useful boundary looks like
A boundary is an operational rule Claude can follow, not a vague request to “stay focused.” It identifies the job, the permitted scope, the output, and what to do when information is missing. For example, “summarize this report” leaves length, audience, evidence and format open. “Summarize the attached report for a finance director in five bullet points, include only figures from the report, and ask before adding outside information” gives Claude decisions it can apply while generating the answer.
Anthropic’s Help Center describes Claude as “a newly-hired contractor” that has no context about you, your task or your organization. Treat the first message as a short project brief: define the result before discussing background, and include the definitions or source material needed to produce it.
- Task: the verb and deliverable, such as compare, rewrite, classify or draft.
- Scope: the documents, time period, audience and subjects included.
- Constraints: length, tone, allowed sources, exclusions, privacy requirements or approval gates.
- Output contract: headings, table columns, file format, number of options or other measurable shape.
- Escalation rule: what Claude should ask instead of guessing or expanding the assignment.
Put each instruction in the right place
Claude offers several overlapping controls. Choosing the narrowest control that matches the instruction prevents a preference for one task from silently affecting unrelated work.

| Direct prompt | A one-off task or an immediate correction | Applies to the current request. State the task, boundaries and output explicitly. |
| Profile preferences | General communication habits | Account-wide preferences Claude considers across conversations; not a substitute for task-specific context. |
| Project instructions | Rules for a recurring body of work | Apply to chats in that Project. They do not make every unrelated conversation inherit the same workflow. |
| Project knowledge | Reference documents and shared definitions | Provides reusable material inside a Project. A chat’s conversational history does not automatically become context for every other Project chat. |
| Styles | Tone, length and presentation | Preset or custom response-delivery preferences. A Style cannot replace the task, source material or workflow rules. |
| Tool settings | Web search or connected services | Use only when the job needs external information. Name the tool and the source or location you want used. |
Projects are described by Anthropic as a paid-plan feature, while past-chat search has been rolling out to specified plans. Availability, labels and limits can change by plan, account and region, so use the controls visible in your current Claude settings rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Write a focused prompt in one pass
A dependable opening prompt can be short if every sentence has a job. Put the deliverable first, then the boundaries and format. An adaptable pattern is:
Help me complete [task]. Keep the response within [scope]. Return [format/length]. If you need information outside that scope, ask me before expanding the task. Do not add unrelated background or extra deliverables.
This is an editorially synthesized pattern, not an Anthropic command or a guarantee of behavior. Replace each bracketed part with concrete language. “Keep it concise” is weaker than “maximum 300 words.” “Use reliable sources” is weaker than “use only the three documents attached to this chat.”
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Specify the decision Claude must make
Many tangents begin because the request names an activity but not the decision behind it. Say whether you need a recommendation, a neutral summary, a list of options, a risk review or a draft ready to send. If you need several outputs, number them and state which is primary.
Define what is out of bounds
Negative constraints are most useful when they are observable: “Do not rewrite the quoted customer comments,” “Do not infer medical advice,” or “Do not use information published after June 2025.” Avoid a long list of prohibitions that conflicts with the desired result; include only boundaries Claude can check.

Tell Claude how to handle uncertainty
Require a question, an explicit “unknown,” or a clearly labelled assumption when the source does not answer something. This prevents a confident-looking expansion of the task. You can also require a final line listing unresolved inputs, but ask for it only when you will use it.
Set account-wide habits in profile preferences
Use profile preferences for rules you want considered in almost every conversation, such as “use plain language,” “show calculations,” or “ask one clarifying question when a requirement is ambiguous.” These preferences are broad by design. A preference that helps with work may be counterproductive for creative writing, code or a one-line factual lookup, so override it in the current prompt when necessary.

- Prefer direct answers before background explanation.
- Use headings and lists when they improve scanning.
- Separate facts from assumptions and identify missing information.
- Ask before taking an action that changes the requested scope.
Rules that belong elsewhere
Do not store a client’s confidential project brief, a temporary deadline or a one-time tone request as a global preference. Put durable client or team requirements in the relevant Project, and put a temporary exception in the prompt for that conversation.
Use a Project as the boundary for recurring work
A Project is the practical home for a repeated workflow: a research assignment, a course, a product launch or a manuscript. Keep two kinds of material separate. Project instructions describe how Claude should work; Project knowledge supplies what it should refer to.
Build the Project deliberately
- Create one Project per coherent body of work. Separate unrelated clients, subjects or confidentiality levels instead of making one giant workspace.
- Write the operating rules in Project instructions. State the audience, approved source types, terminology, review stages, output formats and escalation rules.
- Add stable reference material to Project knowledge. Upload the style guide, glossary, requirements, datasets or background documents that should be reusable.
- Start each chat with a local brief. Name the specific deliverable, source files and deadline even when the Project already contains general rules.
- Keep chat-specific decisions in the chat. A conclusion reached in one conversation is not automatically shared as conversational context with every other chat in the Project; promote a decision to Project instructions or knowledge when it must persist.
- Review stale material. Remove superseded documents and revise instructions when the workflow changes, otherwise Claude may receive conflicting directions.
Example Project instructions
Audience: operations managers.
Use the uploaded process manual as the controlling source.
When sources conflict, identify the conflict and ask which version governs.
Return procedures as numbered steps with the exact menu labels.
Do not invent metrics, legal conclusions or implementation dates.
If a request requires information outside the Project knowledge, ask before searching.
This kind of instruction establishes a repeatable boundary without embedding the details of one particular assignment.

Choose a Style for presentation, not for task control
Styles affect how Claude delivers an answer. A preset such as Concise can reduce explanation; a custom Style can define a recurring voice, reading level or layout. You can change the Style during a conversation when the audience changes. Keep the Style focused on delivery—tone, sentence length, headings, formatting and degree of detail—and keep source, process and approval rules in the prompt or Project.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What a custom Style should contain
- The intended reader and reading level.
- Preferred tone, such as neutral, supportive or formal.
- Formatting rules, including whether to use tables, bullets or prose.
- Words, expressions or rhetorical habits to avoid.
- A length range or a rule to lead with the answer.
“Write for a nontechnical manager, lead with the decision, use short paragraphs and define acronyms on first use” is a presentation brief. “Use the attached contract and flag every indemnity clause” is a task and belongs in the request or Project instructions.
Break complex work into controlled stages
Large requests invite drift because they combine research, interpretation and production in one turn. Anthropic’s guidance for connected tasks recommends decomposing complex work, naming the tool and including relevant context. A staged workflow also gives you a checkpoint before Claude commits to a wrong interpretation.
- Define the plan. Ask Claude to list the proposed stages and the inputs required. Instruct it not to draft the final deliverable yet.
- Gather or inspect sources. Specify the document, service or location to use. Ask for a source inventory or extracted facts, not conclusions.
- Analyze against criteria. Provide the rubric, definitions or comparison fields. Require uncertainty labels and citations to the supplied material where appropriate.
- Confirm the outline. Review the proposed structure, audience and exclusions. Correct them before drafting.
- Produce the deliverable. State the exact format and length again, because this is a new decision point.
- Run a boundary check. Ask Claude to verify that every requirement was met and list any assumptions or omitted inputs separately.
For a connected service, say “Use the calendar tool to check my availability next Tuesday” rather than “find a time.” If current information is unnecessary, disable web search; limiting available tools removes a common source of irrelevant expansion.
Control web search and connected tools
Web search is useful when freshness matters—such as current regulations, prices, schedules or software documentation—and unnecessary when the answer should be derived from a supplied document. Anthropic’s current help guidance documents a web-search toggle and recommends turning it off when a conversation does not require current information.

When search is on
- State the geographic region, date window and source quality you need.
- Name the specific service or location when a connected tool is involved.
- Tell Claude whether outside findings may change the recommendation or may only be reported as background.
- Ask it to distinguish retrieved facts from its interpretation.
When search is off
Say “Use only the attached material and your reasoning; do not browse.” This is stronger than assuming Claude will infer that a closed-book exercise is intended. If the task later needs current information, turn search on deliberately and revise the scope.
Keep past conversations from widening the task
Past-chat search and Project context can help recover decisions, but they also create a risk: an old assumption may be treated as a current requirement. Anthropic says past-chat search is rolling out to certain plans and can be disabled under Settings > Profile using the Search and reference chats control. Interface availability may differ, so confirm the control in your account.
If a specific conversation must not be included in searches, Anthropic’s guidance says deleting that chat is currently the way to ensure it is excluded. Before starting a sensitive or unrelated task, state whether Claude may use earlier chats. For a clean start, write: “Use only this message and the attached files; do not search or rely on past chats.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Correct drift without restarting everything
When an answer wanders, do not add a long explanation of why it failed. Restate the active task and the missing boundary in one compact correction, then request the revised deliverable.
Return to the original task: [deliverable].
Use only [allowed sources].
Keep it to [length/format].
Remove [specific tangent].
If a required fact is missing, ask one question instead of guessing.
For a multi-stage workflow, identify the stage that went wrong: “Stop drafting. Re-check the extracted figures against the attached report and show discrepancies in a table.” This preserves useful work while preventing a mistaken assumption from propagating.

When to open a new chat
Start a new conversation when the audience, confidentiality level or core objective changes, or when the current thread contains so many corrections that the active rules are ambiguous. Copy the durable Project instructions and provide a fresh local brief; do not carry over irrelevant discussion merely for continuity.
Boundary patterns for common tasks
Work and analysis
Analyze the attached sales report for the regional director. Use only figures in the file, cover January through March 2026, and return a table of three trends plus two risks. Do not propose actions until I approve the findings. Mark any calculation that requires an assumption.
Learning
Tutor me on this chapter. Ask one diagnostic question first, then explain one concept at a time. Do not reveal the final answer to the exercise until I show my attempt. Use the chapter’s terminology and keep each explanation under 150 words.
Writing
Rewrite this announcement for existing customers. Preserve every date, price and product name, use a calm professional tone, and return one 120-word version plus a list of factual changes. Do not add benefits that are not stated in the source.
Editing with an approval gate
First list the five highest-impact edits you recommend. Wait for my approval. After approval, apply only those edits and return the revised copy with changed sentences highlighted.
Know the limits of boundary controls
Profile settings, Projects, Styles and prompt wording establish expectations; they are not hard security policies or a guarantee that every response will follow them perfectly. Claude can misunderstand an ambiguous instruction, encounter conflicting material or lack the context needed to decide. Keep sensitive information out of a conversation unless your organization has approved the handling, and review outputs before relying on them.
Feature names, plan eligibility, tool access and rollout status can change. If a navigation path in this article does not match your account, look for the equivalent control in current Settings or the Project interface rather than assuming the feature has been removed. The practical rule remains stable: use the narrowest instruction scope, provide the necessary context, and make the desired output measurable.

A quick pre-send checklist
- Is the first sentence an actionable deliverable?
- Did you define the audience, scope and source material?
- Are exclusions and uncertainty handling explicit?
- Is the requested format measurable?
- Did you put global habits in profile preferences, recurring workflow rules in a Project, and presentation choices in a Style?
- For a complex job, did you separate gathering, analysis, drafting and review?
- Did you name the tool and location, and enable web search only if freshness is required?
- Should Claude ignore past chats for this task?
- What should it ask instead of guessing?
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make Claude follow a boundary permanently?
No control guarantees perfect adherence. Put broadly useful habits in profile preferences, recurring workflow rules in a Project, and restate task-specific limits in each request. Review the output and correct drift directly.
Do separate chats in one Project share their full conversation history?
No. Project instructions and Project knowledge can provide shared context, but one chat’s conversational history does not automatically carry into every other Project chat.
Should I leave web search enabled all the time?
Only when current external information is needed. Disable it for closed-book work based on supplied documents, and state the approved sources when search is enabled.
How do I stop old chats from influencing a new task?
Tell Claude to use only the current message and attachments, and do not search or reference past chats. Past-chat search can be disabled under Settings > Profile with the “Search and reference chats” control where that feature is available.
