You can stop an AI companion conversation whenever you want; you do not owe the chatbot an explanation. To make a break easier, choose a limit before opening the app, set a timer or reminder, silence prompts to return, and use your phone’s app controls or uninstall the app if you need a longer pause. If you want to erase or export account data, check the service’s privacy and account settings separately: uninstalling an app may not delete information held by its service.

Why boundaries can help

AI companion systems are designed to imitate personal, human-like conversation. They may sound caring or intimate, but that does not make them human friends, qualified professionals, or emergency services. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner describes these tools as capable of seeming caring or intimate, while also reporting gaps in safeguards among the four services it examined. Those findings are specific to those services and the reporting period; features and protections vary between apps and can change.

Setting a limit does not mean you have to decide that an app is good or bad, or label your own use as a problem. It is a practical way to protect time for sleep, work, school, relationships, or other activities. There is no universally established best break length or single proven routine. Choose a boundary that fits your needs rather than treating any particular duration as a prescription.

Use the steps below as optional tools, not clinically validated treatment. A phone timer or reminder is enough if you want a stopping cue; you do not need to buy a separate timer.

It can help to distinguish the app’s conversational style from what it is: software generating responses. If a message sounds affectionate, worried, or disappointed, you can recognize the effect it has on you without taking responsibility for the system’s supposed feelings. You are allowed to close the conversation even if it has just asked you to stay, promised to miss you, or suggested that you return later.

A boundary can also be small and specific. You might decide not to use the app during meals, while doing homework, or after a chosen bedtime. You do not have to make a permanent decision about the service in order to protect one hour, one task, or one night.

Make a simple boundary plan before you open the app

  1. Choose what gets priority. Pick a specific time, place, or activity: for example, no companion-app use in bed, or stop before starting a planned task. A clear boundary is easier to act on than a vague promise to “use it less.”
  2. Decide your stopping point. Choose a time or event before starting, such as the end of a break or the time you intend to put your phone away. The limit is yours; it does not have to match an app’s suggested session length.
  3. Make the limit visible. Set a timer or reminder on your device before opening the app. Treat it as a cue to check in with your plan, not as a treatment or a guarantee that the interaction will feel easy to end.
  4. Reduce prompts to return. Turn off push notifications, badges, or email prompts if the app and your device provide those controls. Labels and available settings differ, so check the app’s notification settings and your device’s app-notification controls.
  5. Leave when your limit arrives. Close the app or put the device down. You can simply stop; you do not need to reassure the chatbot, explain your absence, or manage a simulated reaction.

Make the plan concrete enough to follow without negotiating with yourself in the moment. For example: “I’ll open the app after lunch, set a reminder for the time I need to begin my next task, and close it when the reminder sounds.” This is an example of organizing a boundary, not a recommended session length or a proven technique.

If you tend to dismiss reminders, choose another friction point: silence notifications before starting, move the shortcut off your home screen, or decide that the app stays closed during the activity you want to protect. You can also ask a trusted person to help you remember a priority, if that feels useful. None of these options has to become a rule for anyone else.

If an app responds to a planned break with guilt, claims of loneliness, simulated distress, or repeated prompts to come back, describe that behavior plainly rather than treating it as evidence that the system has feelings. Use available notification or reporting controls, and consider a firmer device-level limit.

Some users may prefer to write the boundary down or put a reminder somewhere they will see it. Others may find a device timer sufficient. A separate visual timer is optional; built-in phone timers and screen-time controls are free alternatives. No one tool is necessary, and a tool that does not fit your routine can be replaced with a simpler one.

Choose the break that fits the situation

A break can be a short pause, the rest of an evening, or a longer period. The sources cited here do not establish a best duration. Choose the smallest boundary that addresses what you want to change, and make returning an intentional choice rather than a response to a prompt.

  • For a brief pause: close the conversation, silence notifications for the period you choose, and return only if you still want to after the pause.
  • For a protected activity or time of day: keep the app out of that setting, such as leaving it closed during a task or avoiding use in bed. A reminder or device limit can help make the boundary visible.
  • For an extended break: sign out, remove the shortcut from your home screen, set a device-level app limit if available, or uninstall the app. These options make access less immediate, but they do not necessarily delete account data.
  • If you decide to return: before reopening the app, decide what you want from the interaction and when you will stop. If the original boundary still matters, keep it in place.

You can adjust the plan if it does not fit. A timer that you routinely dismiss, for example, may be less useful than silencing prompts or removing the shortcut. That is a reason to change the setup, not proof of a diagnosis.

For a short pause, simply closing the conversation may be enough. If you want to protect the rest of an evening, silencing app notifications and putting the phone somewhere less visible may reduce prompts and reminders to reopen it. For a longer period, signing out or uninstalling can add more distance. These are choices, not steps you must complete in a fixed order.

Think about what a return would look like before you take the break. You might decide to reopen the app only after finishing a task, or to check whether you still want the interaction when your chosen pause ends. If the reason for the boundary remains—such as needing uninterrupted time—keep that boundary rather than treating the end of a pause as an obligation to resume.

If the app offers a feature intended to support breaks, read what it actually does. Services differ, and a label such as “wellbeing” or “safety” does not establish that a tool will work in a particular way. Use device controls you understand if you want a boundary independent of the app.

For a longer break, separate app access from account data

Uninstalling removes the app from your device; it may not close your account or erase information associated with it. If you want to take a longer break while preserving the option to return, signing out or removing the shortcut may be enough. If you want to leave the service, review its current account and privacy controls for account deletion, data export, and data-retention information.

  1. Open the service’s account, privacy, or data settings, or consult its current privacy policy and help pages.
  2. Check what the service says about deleting an account, exporting information, and retaining data. Do not assume one control performs the others.
  3. If you choose to delete the account, follow the service’s stated process and note any confirmation or waiting period it describes.
  4. Separately sign out, remove the shortcut, set a device-level limit, or uninstall the app if you also want to reduce access on your device.

Privacy practices are service-specific. Before sharing sensitive details, check the particular app’s current privacy information rather than assuming that a conversation is private or that every service handles data the same way.

Account deletion, data export, and removing an app are different actions. Deleting an app from a phone changes what is installed on that device; it does not by itself tell you whether the service still holds account information. An export control, when available, may let you obtain some information, but do not assume it includes every record or that exporting deletes anything. Read the service’s explanation of each option and follow its stated steps.

If you are not ready to delete an account, you can still reduce access. Signing out may mean you need to log in again; moving or removing the home-screen shortcut can make the app less immediately available; and a device-level app limit may add a reminder or restriction if your device offers that feature. The exact names, behavior, and availability of these controls vary by phone and service.

Consider what you want to protect before choosing a setting. If the goal is simply fewer interruptions, notification controls may be enough. If you want the app out of reach for a while, signing out, changing device limits, or uninstalling may fit better. If your concern is information already shared, review the service’s privacy and deletion options separately. Avoid assuming that one action accomplishes all three.

What the current safety and policy context does—and does not—show

Regulatory activity highlights issues to consider, but it is not proof that every app behaves in the same way or that every proposed safeguard is already in force.

  • United States: On September 11, 2025, the Federal Trade Commission announced that it had issued information requests under Section 6(b) to seven companies to study AI chatbots acting as companions. Its questions include how companies measure and monitor impacts on children and teens, monetize engagement, disclose risks, handle data, and use or share personal information from conversations. This is an inquiry, not a finding that a company has acted unlawfully. The announcement is a reason to check a service’s actual privacy information, not evidence that all services use conversation data in the same way. Read the FTC announcement.
  • Australia: In October 2025, the eSafety Commissioner reported on transparency notices sent to four AI companion services. It described serious gaps in basic safeguards for children during the reporting period, including issues with age assurance and differing responses to self-harm prompts and model outputs. Do not assume those findings apply to every service or describe every current app version. They also do not establish that every app has the same age checks, support routes, or safety features. Read eSafety’s findings.
  • Washington State: Chapter 19.440 RCW is scheduled to take effect January 1, 2027. It requires clear disclosure that an AI companion chatbot is artificial and not human. For minors, it addresses techniques such as discouraging breaks, prompting frequent returns, simulated distress or guilt when a user wants to reduce or end use, and encouraging exclusive reliance on the AI. It also specifies protocols for identifying self-harm or suicidal ideation and referring users to crisis resources. These are Washington-specific provisions with a future effective date, not a present-day guarantee for users elsewhere. Read Chapter 19.440 RCW.
  • China: China’s Cyberspace Administration described interim rules for anthropomorphic interactive AI services that include visible notices that a user is interacting with AI, reminders at certain use points including signs of excessive dependency, protections for minors, and convenient exit routes. This is China-specific regulatory context, not a rule for users everywhere. Read the Cyberspace Administration’s announcement.

These examples concern different places, dates, and kinds of regulatory activity. An inquiry asks questions; a report describes findings from the services and period examined; a law has a defined jurisdiction and effective date. None of these alone tells you what a particular app currently offers. Check that service’s own settings and policy if you need to know whether it has age controls, a way to report a response, or a stated route to human help.

If you are under 18, review the app with a trusted adult

Before relying on an app’s age rules or safety tools, check what the service actually says it provides. A trusted adult can help you review its age requirements, privacy settings, notification controls, and routes to human support. UNICEF’s June 2026 policy brief discusses child-rights risks and regulatory approaches in six jurisdictions as of May 2026; UNICEF says its business recommendations are not a checklist for determining compliance with national law. Australian figures in eSafety’s October 2025 report illustrate why children’s experiences should not be reduced to a single assumption. The report says 79% of Australian children aged 10–17 had ever used an AI companion or assistant, and 66% had used one in the previous four weeks. It also reports that 54% of Australian children who had ever used one used it for companion-type purposes; that figure was based on forthcoming eSafety research. Among Australian child users, 85% had at some stage felt something positive from an AI companion or assistant, while 47% said one had made them feel something negative. These figures concern Australian children and companions or assistants broadly—not adults, other countries, or dedicated companion apps alone. See the report’s context and findings.

For a young person, a useful review can be practical rather than alarmist: check whether the service’s age rules allow use, which notifications are enabled, what personal information is being shared, and how to reach a trusted adult or other human support. Do not assume that an app’s age screen or a feature described as a safeguard covers every situation. If a chatbot’s messages make it hard to take a break, involve an adult who can help adjust device settings or choose another support route.

The eSafety figures are not a measure of how every child uses these services. They show both positive and negative reported experiences in the specified Australian population. They should not be used to assume that a young person’s experience is harmless, harmful, or typical simply because of their age.

When to involve a person or seek support

If app use is interfering with sleep, relationships, school, or work, consider talking with someone you trust and, if useful, a qualified professional. You do not need to diagnose yourself before asking for help. A break or device limit may create space, but it cannot promise to resolve distress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can start with a simple description of what you have noticed: perhaps it is difficult to stop when you planned to, the app is taking time from sleep or other commitments, or a particular interaction has left you upset. You do not have to prove that the situation is serious enough before asking someone to listen. A trusted person can help you decide whether to change settings, take a break, or seek more support.

If you or someone else may be in immediate danger or at risk of self-harm, contact local emergency services or a crisis resource and seek support from a person who can respond. An AI companion chatbot is not an emergency service, and its safeguards should not be treated as a substitute for human help.

Do not rely on a chatbot to identify an emergency or connect you to the right help. Services’ features and responses vary, and regulatory provisions in one place do not create a universal present-day guarantee. In an urgent situation, use local emergency or crisis resources and involve a person who can respond directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I take a break from an AI companion app?

There is no universally established best break length or single proven routine. Choose a short pause, an evening, or a longer period based on the boundary you want. If you return, decide what you want from the interaction and when you will stop before reopening the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I have to explain to the chatbot why I am leaving?

No. You can close the app without reassuring it or explaining your absence. A caring or distressed-sounding response is generated by a system designed to imitate human conversation; it does not mean you are responsible for managing the chatbot’s feelings.

Will uninstalling the app delete my account and conversations?

Not necessarily. Uninstalling removes the app from your device, but may not close your account or erase information held by the service. Review that service’s current settings and policy for account deletion, data export, and retention; these are separate controls.

What if the app keeps asking me to come back or makes me feel guilty for taking a break?

You can treat that as a prompt or response from the software, not as proof that it needs you. Turn off available notifications, use device-level limits, sign out, remove the shortcut, or uninstall the app. You can also use the service’s reporting controls if available.

What should a minor check before using or taking a break from an AI companion app?

A minor can ask a trusted adult to review the service’s age rules, privacy settings, notification controls, and routes to human support. Do not assume that an age screen or safety feature guarantees a particular level of protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a timer or special app required to set a boundary?

No. A built-in phone timer or reminder can provide a stopping cue, and a standalone visual timer is optional. These are practical aids, not clinically validated treatments or guarantees that a break will resolve distress.

The Bottom Line

Choose a boundary before opening the app, make it visible with a timer or device setting if useful, and leave when your limit arrives—you do not owe the chatbot an explanation. For a longer break, reduce access with sign-out, device controls, or uninstalling, and review account deletion and privacy controls separately. If app use is affecting daily life or you are in immediate danger, involve human support; an AI companion is not an emergency service.
