Privacy in an AI chat is not one switch. Training use, chat history, memory, temporary mode, human safety review, feedback, connected apps and account administration are separate decisions. Decide what you are willing to disclose first, then enable the specific control that matches your goal. A request such as “keep this private” is only an instruction to the model; it is not a technical privacy setting.
This guide explains the current consumer controls documented by OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Microsoft. Interfaces and policies can differ by country, subscription, account type, administrator policy and app version, so verify the live help page before relying on a setting for sensitive work.
What each privacy control actually changes
Use precise terms when deciding what you need. The controls below affect different stages of an AI conversation:
- Model training or improvement: whether future conversations may be used to improve models. Turning this off normally does not remove an existing chat from your account.
- History or activity: whether a conversation is listed in the product’s normal chat history or activity log. History controls do not necessarily stop temporary processing for safety or legal purposes.
- Memory and personalization: whether the service saves facts or preferences for later conversations. Disabling memory does not automatically change training, history or safety handling.
- Temporary or incognito mode: a special conversation type designed to avoid normal history and personalization. Providers can still retain or process the content for a limited period.
- Feedback: thumbs-up, thumbs-down, surveys and bug reports can create a separate record. The feedback workflow may retain the related conversation or make it eligible for improvement even when a general training opt-out is enabled.
- Connected tools: actions, extensions, uploads and third-party services can receive the data needed to perform a task. Their own privacy policies and retention rules then apply.
Therefore, “not used for training” must not be read as “not stored,” “not reviewed,” or “deleted.” A provider may still process content to deliver a response, prevent abuse, investigate a safety issue, comply with law or operate a connected feature.

Choose your disclosure boundary before you type
For ordinary questions, removing direct identifiers is usually a sensible habit. Replace a person’s name with a role, a customer number with a fictional value, and an exact address with a city or region. Paste only the excerpt needed to solve the problem, and remove account credentials, payment details, private keys, medical record numbers and confidential attachments.
Ask yourself three questions:
- Would I accept this text being retained for the provider’s documented period, processed for safety, or seen by an authorized reviewer?
- Can I obtain a useful answer after removing names, account numbers, workplace identifiers, dates of birth and unique combinations of facts?
- Will a connected app, action, extension or uploaded file receive information beyond the chat provider?
If the answer to the first question is no, do not put the information into a consumer AI chat. Use a de-identified scenario, a synthetic example or an organization-approved system with a written data policy instead. This is a risk boundary, not a claim that every conversation is routinely read by a person.
ChatGPT: separate training, history, memory and temporary chats
OpenAI’s consumer controls distinguish model improvement from chat storage and personalization. The current labels and paths are documented in OpenAI’s Data Controls guide.
Stop new consumer chats from model training
- Open ChatGPT while signed in.
- Open Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
OpenAI says new conversations will not be used to train its models after this switch is off, and the choice applies across devices for that signed-in account. The conversations can still appear in chat history. If you need a chat removed, delete it separately rather than assuming the training switch performs deletion.
Use a one-off Temporary Chat
- Start a new conversation.
- Choose Temporary before sending the first message.
- Select Personalized or Unpersonalized.
- Confirm the mode is shown in the conversation, then send the message.
A personalized temporary chat may use existing memories, custom instructions and plugins. Neither temporary option creates or updates memories while the conversation remains temporary. OpenAI’s current guidance says an unsaved Temporary Chat may be retained for safety for up to 30 days. Temporary mode therefore reduces normal persistence; it is not a promise of zero processing or immediate erasure. Details are in OpenAI’s Temporary Chat documentation.
Handle memory, feedback and external actions separately
Turning off model improvement does not delete saved memories, custom instructions or prior chats. Review and remove those items using their own settings. Be cautious with thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback: OpenAI states that a conversation associated with feedback may be used to train models even after a general opt-out. A GPT action that sends information to another service is governed by that recipient’s policy and may be retained longer or used for other purposes. Do not send confidential material through an action merely because the chat itself is temporary.

Check the account category
OpenAI says content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare workspaces and the API is not used for model improvement by default. That does not override an organization’s retention, audit, administrator-access or legal-hold rules. A personal account and a managed workspace can therefore produce different privacy outcomes even when the interface looks similar. OpenAI’s consumer-data explanation also advises: "Please do not enter sensitive information that you would not want reviewed or used." Read the full qualification at OpenAI’s consumer data guidance.

Anthropic’s consumer guidance dated March 16, 2026 covers Claude Free, Pro and Max conversations and coding sessions. It says those chats may be used to improve models when a user allows model improvement, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or through another explicit opt-in. The control is therefore not equivalent to a blanket promise that no processing occurs.
Use Incognito for a conversation you do not want used to improve Claude
Anthropic states that Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when the Model Improvement setting is enabled. Select the Incognito option before entering the sensitive material, and verify that the conversation is marked accordingly. Incognito status does not change the policies of a connected service or remove information already sent elsewhere.
Treat feedback as a separate record
Anthropic says a thumbs-up or thumbs-down report stores the entire related conversation in its secured backend for up to five years. That figure applies to the feedback report; it should not be generalized as a five-year retention period for every Claude chat. Avoid submitting feedback on a conversation that contains details you would not want included in that separate record. The provider’s current explanation is at Anthropic’s Privacy Center.
Gemini Apps: Keep Activity, Temporary Chat and Google settings
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub was updated September 24, 2026, and its privacy notice is dated June 29, 2026. It covers signed-in Gemini Apps; signed-out use is governed by Google’s broader Privacy Policy. The controls below therefore apply only when the account and product match that scope.
Keep Activity on
With Keep Activity on, Gemini chats and shared material are saved in Activity. Google says this information can be used to provide, develop and improve its services, including model training, with help from human reviewers. Activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default; Google offers 3-month, 36-month or no-auto-delete choices. Data reviewed by service providers is disconnected from the Google Account and can be retained for up to three years.

Keep Activity off
When Keep Activity is off, future chats do not appear in Activity and are not used to train Google’s AI models unless you submit feedback. Google still keeps those chats for 72 hours to respond, process feedback and protect Google, users and the public. Turning Activity off does not delete chats that were previously reviewed; those copies may remain for up to three years. The setting is therefore a forward-looking control, not a retroactive deletion command.
Temporary Chat and personalization
Gemini Temporary Chat is intended to prevent the service from remembering or using a conversation to personalize your experience. Google says temporary chats are not used to train Google AI, but they remain available for 72 hours and can still be processed for service and safety. Select Temporary Chat before sharing the content you want kept out of normal personalization.
Do not confuse Gemini settings with other Google activity
Changing Gemini controls does not change separate settings such as Web & App Activity or Location History. Some connected apps may be unavailable when Keep Activity is off, and information saved by another Google service follows that service’s rules. Check the connected service itself before assuming that a Gemini setting covers it. See the complete qualifications in the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
Microsoft Copilot: verify the account and app version first
Microsoft’s cited privacy-controls page is for personal Microsoft Accounts, not Microsoft 365 Copilot signed in with a work or school account. It also warns that the page applies only to the older Copilot app after an updated app became available on August 18, 2026. If you use the current web or app version, follow the newer guidance linked by Microsoft instead of assuming the older labels are present.
Controls documented for the older personal-account interface
Microsoft describes separate switches for personalization and memory, model-training use, personalized advertising and conversation history. The training opt-out applies to future conversation activity, but Microsoft says it does not exclude use for every product or system improvement, advertising, safety, security or compliance purpose.
Turning memory off does not erase history. Microsoft documents deleting saved memory and deleting conversation history as separate actions. Use both deletion paths if your goal is to remove information already stored, and check advertising controls independently if personalized ads are part of your concern. These are provider-specific policy figures, not an independent ranking of which service is “most private.” No cross-provider prevalence statistic establishes how often human review occurs across all services.

How to delete what is already saved
Deletion is a separate task from preventing future training. Use this order when you need a cleanup:
- Delete the conversation or activity record in the provider’s history, Activity or chat-management screen.
- Remove saved memories and personalization items using the dedicated memory controls.
- Delete uploaded files, custom instructions and project data wherever the service stores them; a chat deletion may not remove a separately retained file.
- Review feedback submissions and ask the provider what deletion options apply to the associated report.
- Revoke connected apps or actions and delete copies held by those services under their own policies.
- Check organization retention if the account belongs to an employer, school or other managed workspace. Administrators, legal holds and audit systems can follow rules that a consumer delete button cannot override.
After deleting, allow for any documented retention window. Do not describe the action as immediate erasure unless the provider explicitly guarantees that result.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“Keep this private” is treated as a setting
A prompt can influence the model’s response style, but it cannot change server retention, training eligibility, reviewer access or a third-party action. Choose the product control before sending the content.
Training is turned off, so the chat is assumed to be gone
Training opt-outs generally govern future model-improvement use. Delete history, memories, files and external copies separately.

Memory is disabled, so personalization data is assumed to be deleted
Disabling future memory creation does not necessarily remove memories already saved. Open the memory-management screen and delete existing entries.

A temporary chat is treated as zero-retention
Temporary and incognito modes still allow response generation and safety processing. Check the provider’s stated retention period and do not use the mode for information whose disclosure would cause serious harm.
A feedback button is used on a sensitive answer
Feedback can create a longer-lived record or change training eligibility. Leave feedback only after removing sensitive details, or use a generic report that does not include the original content.
A connected tool is overlooked
Actions, extensions, integrations and uploaded documents can create a second data trail. Read the recipient’s policy and avoid sending secrets that the task does not require.

Personal, business, education and administrator-managed accounts can have different defaults. Confirm the signed-in account, product name, country, app version and the date of the help page before relying on a label.
A practical decision framework
Low-sensitivity content
For public facts, brainstorming and non-identifying drafts, normal chat may be reasonable. Still avoid credentials and review whether history or personalization will create an unwanted record.
Moderate-sensitivity content
For internal work, customer scenarios or personal planning, remove identifiers, disable training where available, use temporary or incognito mode when appropriate, and avoid feedback and third-party actions unless necessary.
High-sensitivity or high-harm content
For passwords, private keys, unredacted medical or financial records, confidential legal material, protected customer data or information that could endanger someone, do not use a consumer chat. Use an approved organizational system with documented access, retention and deletion rules, or work from a synthetic example.
Recheck the provider’s live documentation whenever an interface changes, you switch accounts, or the consequences of disclosure change. Privacy controls are useful only when the control, account, feature and data type all match your actual boundary.
The Bottom Line
Set the narrowest boundary that meets the task: redact first, choose the specific training/history/memory/temporary control you need, and keep seriously harmful information out of consumer AI chats.
