You can stop staring at Bitcoin charts by using two different tools: a price alert that sends a notification when BTC reaches a condition, and a take-profit or other exit order that submits a sale instruction to the exchange. An alert never sells by itself. An order can execute only if its trigger, limit price, available liquidity, account balance and duration all allow it.
The exact labels and order types vary by exchange, country and account. The steps below use documented Binance, Coinbase and Kraken workflows as examples; use the equivalent BTC trading-pair ticket in your own account and verify the final order in the open-orders screen.
Alert or automatic sale: choose the result you actually want
Start by deciding whether you need information or execution. A notification is useful when you want to decide manually. An order is appropriate when you want the exchange to attempt a sale even when you are offline.

Prepare the BTC market before setting anything
- Identify the exact pair. BTC/USD, BTC/USDT and other pairs have different prices and order books. A target entered for one quote currency does not automatically apply to another.
- Sign in to the trading account. Confirm that the account is eligible for the required order type in your country and that identity, funding or trading restrictions will not block submission.
- Decide whether you are alerting or selling. Open the pair’s market page first, rather than assuming an alert screen is connected to an order ticket.
- Enable notifications. Allow push notifications in the exchange app and in the phone or desktop operating system. Email alerts may require a separate account setting.
- Check the asset and amount. For a sale order, make sure the BTC is in the correct wallet or account and that the amount is the intended fraction or whole balance.
- Know how to find open orders. You need the exchange’s Active Orders, Open Orders or Orders tab so you can confirm placement and cancel an instruction that is no longer wanted.
How to set a Bitcoin price alert
The general pattern is the same across platforms: select a BTC pair, choose the condition, enter a price or percentage, select how often the condition can notify you, and save. The alert is informational; selling still requires a separate action unless you place an order.

Binance mobile workflow
- Open Markets and find the BTC trading pair you intend to follow.
- Select the alert icon for that pair.
- Choose the alert condition, such as reaching a target, rising above a target, dropping to a target or meeting a percentage-change threshold.
- Enter the target value and choose the notification frequency.
- Create the alert and confirm that notifications are enabled for the app and device.
Binance’s documented mobile workflow requires Binance Pro. Its stated limits are a maximum of 10 alerts for one trading pair, 50 alerts in total and a 90-day validity period. Binance says, “Each alert is valid for 90 days.” These are product limits, not predictions about Bitcoin prices.
Binance desktop workflow
- Open the exchange’s Alerts interface.
- Select the BTC market and the alert type.
- Set the target, percentage threshold and frequency.
- Save the alert, then check the alert list for its status and expiry.
Desktop labels and layout can change. If the alert icon is missing, verify that you are viewing the intended spot or derivatives market, that the account has the required interface enabled and that your browser or operating system permits notifications.
Coinbase mobile workflow
- Search for Bitcoin in the mobile app and open the asset page.
- Tap the star to add Bitcoin to your watchlist.
- Tap the bell-plus icon and choose Add Alert.
- Choose whether the alert should fire when the price is above or below your target.
- Enter the target and save it.
- Select the available notification channels, such as push, in-app or email, and allow them in your device settings.
Coinbase says only watchlisted assets send these alerts. Reaching the target therefore produces information, not an order. You must return to the trading screen and submit a sale yourself.

How to place a take-profit Bitcoin sale
Read the order ticket from top to bottom before submitting it. A take-profit limit order normally contains two prices:
- Trigger (or stop) price: the condition that activates the order.
- Limit price: the least favorable price you will accept for the resulting limit sell. For a sale, this is generally the minimum price at which the order may execute.
Once the trigger is reached, the exchange posts the limit order. If bids do not meet that limit, the order can remain open or expire without a fill. A trigger is therefore an activation event, not a promise that the BTC was sold.
Generic order-ticket procedure
- Open the BTC market and choose Sell, not Buy.
- Select the exchange’s take-profit limit, conditional limit, stop-limit or equivalent exit type. Do not assume that a button named “Take Profit” behaves the same way on every platform.
- Enter the BTC quantity. If you are selling only part of a position, type the amount rather than selecting 100% by habit.
- Enter the trigger price and limit price in their separate fields. Recheck which field activates the order and which field controls the minimum acceptable execution price.
- Choose the time-in-force. Common choices documented by Coinbase include good-til-canceled, immediate-or-cancel and fill-or-kill. A good-til-canceled order can remain open until filled or canceled; the other choices impose stricter immediate-fill requirements.
- Review the estimated proceeds, fees, expiration, linked-position setting and any reduce-only or close-position option offered by the platform.
- Submit the order only after the preview shows the intended pair, side, amount and prices.
- Open Active Orders or Open Orders and verify that the instruction appears there. An alert entry alone is not evidence that a sale order exists.
Kraken’s take-profit limit example
Kraken describes a take-profit limit order that places a limit order after the last traded price reaches the selected profit price. The trigger is the profit condition; the limit is the price you want, with execution at that price or better. Kraken also states that this order is independent and not reduce-only. If you sell the BTC elsewhere, you must manually cancel the remaining order or it could later attempt to sell BTC you no longer intend to offer.

Kraken’s app also supports take-profit and stop-loss orders attached to a previous instant-buy transaction. That linkage is a different workflow from an independent order. Its help documentation cautions that an attached order may not execute even when the market reaches the target if the exchange cannot lock in the target price or better for the full amount.
Coinbase stop-limit example
Coinbase’s documented stop-limit procedure uses a stop price and a limit price. When the stop is triggered, the limit order is posted. Its limit-order settings include good-til-canceled, immediate-or-cancel and fill-or-kill time-in-force choices. Confirm the available choices in your region and for the specific BTC market before relying on them.
Binance stop-limit example
Binance similarly explains that a stop-limit trigger places a limit order. It warns that choosing a limit price too far from the trigger can leave the order unfilled after activation. The exact names and placement of take-profit, stop-limit, bracket or attached-exit features depend on the market and account interface.

Why the trigger and limit price are separate
Suppose you set a trigger at 70,000 in your quote currency and a limit sell at 69,800. When the trigger condition occurs, the exchange releases a sell order that will accept 69,800 or more. If the market jumps through the trigger and available bids are only 69,700, the order remains unfilled. If you instead place the limit at 70,000, the minimum is stricter and the chance of missing a fast move can increase.
The opposite mistake is entering a limit price that is so far from the trigger that the sale could execute at a materially different level than intended. Read the preview and the platform’s definition of “at or better” before submitting. Liquidity, order-book depth, volatility and the amount you are selling determine whether a posted limit can fill.
Alerts and orders are not interchangeable

Check the order after you leave the market
After submission, use this verification sequence:
- Open the pair’s active or open-orders list.
- Confirm the side is Sell and the quantity matches your plan.
- Read the displayed trigger and limit values separately.
- Check status: pending, triggered, partially filled, filled, canceled or expired.
- Confirm the time-in-force and any expiration date.
- Review whether the order is linked to a purchase or position, or is an independent instruction.
- Keep the cancellation path available. If your plan changes or you sell through another route, cancel a stale independent order.
Do not infer that an order was submitted because a price alert appears in the same app. They are separate records and may be managed in different screens.

Common problems and fixes
The alert never arrives
- Check that Bitcoin is watchlisted where the platform requires it.
- Enable push, in-app, email or desktop notifications both in the exchange and in the operating system.
- Confirm the alert direction: “above” and “below” are not interchangeable.
- Check that the alert has not expired or exceeded the platform’s alert count.
- Verify the pair and quote currency; a target for BTC/USD will not monitor BTC/USDT.
The trigger occurred but no sale filled
- Review the open-order status. The trigger may have posted a limit order that is still waiting.
- Compare the limit price with current bids and available liquidity.
- Check whether the order amount exceeded the liquidity available at your limit.
- Read the platform’s execution warning: Kraken notes that it may be unable to lock in the target price or better for the full amount, and Binance warns that a poorly chosen limit can remain unfilled after triggering.
- Decide whether to leave, modify or cancel the order according to your plan; changing it can alter the minimum price you will accept.
The order option is missing
- Confirm that you are in the correct spot, margin or derivatives interface.
- Check regional eligibility, account verification and whether the mobile app requires a professional mode; Binance documents Binance Pro for its mobile alerts.
- Look for equivalent labels such as conditional limit, stop-limit, bracket or attached take-profit rather than assuming the exact phrase “take profit” is used.
- Read the current help page for your account because exchange features and labels change.
An old order remains after you sold
An independent take-profit order does not necessarily know that you exited through another transaction. Locate it in Open Orders and cancel it manually when it no longer represents your holdings.
A practical setup checklist
- Pair and quote currency confirmed.
- Alert or sale objective chosen.
- For an alert: direction, target, frequency and notification permissions checked.
- For a sale: Sell side and BTC quantity checked.
- Trigger and limit fields read independently.
- Time-in-force, duration, fees and linkage reviewed.
- Order preview accepted only after every value matches the plan.
- Active/Open Orders list checked after submission.
- Cancellation method understood before leaving the app.
What these tools can—and cannot—promise
Alerts reduce the need to watch charts, but they depend on notification delivery and platform validity rules. Orders reduce the need to be online at the target, but execution depends on the trigger, limit, order-book liquidity, account status and exchange operation. Neither platform documentation guarantees a trading outcome or a particular price.

Check the current order ticket and the rules that apply to your jurisdiction on the day you place an instruction.
