Use two separate controls: a Bitcoin price alert notifies you when a selected market reaches a condition, while a liquidation-risk alert tracks the mark price, margin and liquidation estimate for a leveraged derivatives position. A price alert normally does not submit an order and does not prevent liquidation. The exact menus, price reference, notification channels and alert limits depend on the exchange, product and jurisdiction.
Price alerts and liquidation alerts solve different problems
A spot or general market alert answers: “Has Bitcoin reached my chosen level?” You select a market such as BTC/USD or BTC/USDT, define a threshold or percentage move, and receive a push, in-app or email notification. The alert is informational unless the exchange explicitly offers a separate trading automation feature.
A liquidation-risk alert answers: “Is my leveraged position approaching the exchange’s liquidation conditions?” That calculation uses derivatives-specific data, including maintenance margin, account equity, position size, leverage, funding and the contract’s liquidation reference price. A notification tied only to the spot or last-traded Bitcoin price can be early, late or irrelevant to the liquidation calculation.
Coinbase states this distinction plainly: “These alerts are only notifications that an asset has reached a certain price. They do not place an order for that asset.” (Coinbase Help.) Treat every alert as a prompt to check the position yourself, not as a guarantee that a trade, margin top-up or close will occur.

Check these settings before creating an alert
- Market: Confirm the exact pair or contract. BTC/USD spot, BTC/USDT perpetual and a dated Bitcoin futures contract can have different prices and alert menus.
- Price reference: Determine whether the trigger uses last-traded price, index price, mark price or a percentage calculated from one of those feeds.
- Direction: Choose above, below, reaches, rises by or falls by. “Below” is normally used for downside risk; “above” can monitor a take-profit level or a short position’s danger zone.
- Delivery: Enable the specific push, in-app and email permissions you intend to rely on. Operating-system notification blocks can override an exchange preference.
- Frequency and expiry: Check whether the alert fires once, repeats, expires on a date or remains active until deleted.
- Position context: For a leveraged trade, record the current liquidation-price estimate, mark price, margin ratio or margin equity and maintenance-margin requirement before choosing a threshold.
Exchange interfaces change. Verify the labels and availability in your signed-in account before relying on an alert for a live position.
How to set a Bitcoin price alert in the Binance app
Binance’s support instructions, updated January 6, 2026, describe several app alert conditions and product limits (Binance Support: How to Set a Price Alert on Binance?). The wording may differ slightly between app versions.
- Open the Binance mobile app and sign in.
- Open the market or trading-pair selector and choose the Bitcoin pair you actually want to monitor.
- Open the price-alert control (often shown with a bell or alert icon).
- Select the condition. Available choices documented by Binance include price reaches a target, rises above a target, drops to a target, percentage change over or under a chosen amount, and 24-hour percentage change over a chosen amount.
- Enter the target price or percentage and review the displayed pair and direction.
- Choose the available notification method, save the alert and confirm that it appears in the active-alert list.

These are Binance product settings, not an industry standard. Recheck the current alert screen if you create a large set of levels or need an alert to remain active longer than 90 days.

How do I set a Bitcoin price alert in the Coinbase mobile app?
Coinbase requires the asset to be on a watchlist for a custom alert to be sent. Its documented workflow is in Set and receive price alerts.

- Open the Coinbase mobile app and search for Bitcoin.
- Select the Bitcoin asset and add it to your watchlist if it is not already listed there.
- Open the asset page and tap the bell-plus icon.
- Choose Add Alert.
- Set whether the price should move above or below your target, enter the target value and save.
- Open notification settings and select push, in-app, email or the combination you want for custom alerts. Confirm that both the app and the phone operating system permit those notifications.
After saving, verify that Bitcoin remains on the watchlist and that the alert is visible in the app’s alert area. This workflow reports an asset-price condition; it is not an order-entry instruction and cannot close a derivatives position for you.
How to set a Bitcoin or futures alert in Kraken
Kraken’s Market Alerts documentation, last updated January 20, 2026, describes creation and management from the web interface.
- Sign in to Kraken on the web and open the Alerts widget.
- Select the market you want to monitor.
- Choose the trigger parameters, such as a price level or a percentage adjustment.
- Enter the price, or use the percentage-adjustment buttons to calculate a level from the current market value.
- Save the alert, then open the active-alert list to confirm the market, direction and threshold.
From the same area, active alerts can be edited or deleted, and historical alerts can be viewed. Kraken currently states that Futures price alerts cannot be created in its mobile app. You can create a Futures alert on the web and still receive a mobile push notification if price-alert pushes are enabled in the app; unlike a Spot alert, that mobile notification may not link directly to the relevant market page.
What actually determines liquidation risk?
Liquidation is an exchange risk-control process for a leveraged derivatives position. It is generally initiated when the account or position no longer satisfies the contract’s maintenance-margin requirement. The displayed liquidation price is an estimate based on the exchange’s formulas and current position data, not a guaranteed execution price.

Binance: mark price, last price and liquidation
Binance distinguishes the Last Price, the latest traded contract price, from the Mark Price, which is calculated using funding data and a basket of spot-exchange prices. Its Futures Liquidation Protocols documentation says realized PnL uses Last Price, while liquidation prices and unrealized PnL use Mark Price: “Your liquidation prices and unrealized PnL are calculated based on the Mark Price.” Liquidation occurs when Mark Price reaches the position’s liquidation price under the applicable contract rules.
Fast or dislocated markets can produce an executed liquidation price that differs from the threshold originally displayed. Therefore, a last-price Bitcoin alert is not a substitute for monitoring the mark price shown in the futures position panel.
Kraken: an estimate tied to mark price and maintenance margin
Kraken’s Liquidation FAQ describes the liquidation price as “an estimate of which mark price level can trigger a liquidation.” The estimate can change as portfolio value, position size, mark price, funding and maintenance-margin conditions change. Kraken exposes the value in the position interface and through its WebSocket open_positions feed.

Coinbase US Derivatives: margin ratio and assumptions
Coinbase’s US Derivatives guidance (Margin ratio and liquidation risk management) defines margin ratio as the maintenance-margin requirement divided by funds available for margin. Its liquidation-price estimate depends on assumptions about other positions and unrealized PnL, so the actual liquidation outcome can vary with market conditions.

How to set an alert near your liquidation estimate
No reviewed exchange support page establishes universal, position-aware liquidation-warning support. Use the following workflow only when your exchange confirms that the alert can monitor the relevant derivatives market and price reference.
- Open the live derivatives position. Record side (long or short), contract, quantity, entry price, mark price, liquidation-price estimate, margin ratio or equity and maintenance-margin requirement.
- Identify the trigger feed. Check whether the exchange’s alert can use mark price. If it only uses last price or a spot pair, label it as a general warning rather than a liquidation alert.
- Choose a personal buffer. Set a level far enough from the displayed estimate to allow for volatility, notification delay and the time you need to act. There is no universal safe percentage or distance: the appropriate buffer depends on position size, leverage, collateral, market volatility and your risk tolerance.
- Create the closest supported alert. For a long position, this is commonly a below-level alert; for a short position, it may be an above-level alert. Confirm the contract, direction and reference before saving.
- Activate more than one delivery path. Enable the exchange’s supported push, in-app and email channels, and check phone-level permissions. Do not assume a mobile push will open the correct derivatives screen.
- Keep watching account data. Recheck the position after fills, partial closes, additional collateral, funding payments, transfers, mark-price changes or other position changes. A static alert does not automatically understand every change to your margin.
- Prepare a manual response. Decide in advance whether you would reduce size, add collateral, close the position or do nothing. An alert cannot perform that decision unless a separate, explicitly configured order feature exists.
Alerts can be delayed, missed or triggered from a feed that differs from the liquidation reference. Never treat one as insurance against liquidation.

Use the exchange whose interface exposes the market and reference you need, not merely the one with the most convenient spot-alert menu. A platform may support excellent Bitcoin notifications while offering no dedicated warning tied to your specific leveraged position.

Troubleshooting alerts that do not behave as expected
The alert never fired
- Check that the target was actually reached on the alert’s feed, not just on a different chart or spot exchange.
- Confirm the alert is still active and has not expired, been deleted or reached a one-time trigger.
- Review app, browser, email and operating-system notification permissions.
- Check for maintenance, connectivity problems or a delayed app session, then sign in and review alert history where available.
The notification arrived but the position was not liquidated
A notification threshold is not itself a liquidation command. Compare the alert’s market and reference with the position’s mark price and current liquidation estimate. The estimate can move as margin and portfolio conditions change.

The position liquidated before the alert arrived
Volatility, mark-price movement, feed differences and delivery delay can leave insufficient time to act. A displayed liquidation estimate is not guaranteed execution protection. Reduce reliance on a single notification path and manage position size and collateral according to your own risk plan.
Kraken Futures alert is visible on mobile but does not open the market
That behavior is documented for Futures alerts created on the web: a mobile push may arrive without the Spot-style link to the relevant market page. Open the derivatives position manually from the app or use the web interface.
Binance will not let me add another alert
Check both limits: 10 alerts for one trading pair and 50 alerts in total, with each alert documented as valid for 90 days. Delete obsolete alerts or wait for expiry, then verify the current app’s limits because settings can change.

A practical daily check for leveraged Bitcoin positions
- Open the exact contract, not only a Bitcoin spot chart.
- Compare last price with mark price when the exchange provides both.
- Read the current liquidation estimate, margin ratio or equity and maintenance-margin requirement.
- Look for recent fills, funding, collateral transfers or other changes that can move the estimate.
- Confirm that alerts remain active and that at least one delivery channel is working.
- Keep enough time and account access to act manually; an alert is an observation, not a risk-management guarantee.
