Most three-dial TSA suitcase locks can be reset only while they are open at the current combination. On a new Travel Sentry-style lock, the factory combination is commonly 0-0-0. Set that code, find the lock’s reset button, pinhole, lever or selector, choose a new three-digit combination, and save it using the mechanism on your model. Test the new code with the suitcase still open before closing the bag and scrambling the dials.
The keyhole marked with a red diamond is not a traveler reset port. It allows authorized airport screeners to open a TSA-accepted lock with secure tools; you continue to use the combination and the visible reset control.
What you need before changing the code
Identify the lock style and make sure the suitcase is open. Reset mechanisms are model-specific, so forcing a button or selector can damage the lock.
- The suitcase must usually be unlocked with the current combination.
- Have a ballpoint pen or similar pointed tool ready for a recessed reset button or pinhole.
- Keep the zipper pulls or latch disengaged while setting and testing the new code.
- Use the index mark beside the dials; each digit must be centered exactly on it.
- Record the new combination in a secure place before traveling.
Most locks have three dials, but the mechanism and dial count can differ. If the controls on your lock do not match the procedures below, identify the manufacturer and model and use its instructions rather than guessing.

How to set a new combination on a new lock
1. Start with the factory combination
Travel Sentry states that a new Travel Sentry-approved combination lock is set to 0-0-0. Turn every dial to 0 and align the digits with the lock’s index mark. The exact model instructions control if the manufacturer specifies a different factory code.
2. Open the lock and remove tension
Release the zipper pulls or open the latch. Keep the suitcase open so a mistake cannot trap your belongings. If a latch is difficult to release, make sure the dials are centered precisely and that the zipper is not pulling against the latch.
3. Engage the model’s reset control
Use the procedure for your lock style in the sections below. A reset button may click into a set position, a lever may need to be held, or a selector may move from a normal position to SET.

4. Choose and save the new digits
Turn the dials to a combination that you can remember but that is not obvious from your luggage tag or public information. Complete the save action required by the model, then return the reset control to its normal position if necessary.
5. Test before closing the suitcase
With the bag still open, scramble the dials, then dial the new combination and operate the release. Repeat this test several times. Only after it works should you insert the zipper pulls, close the latch, and scramble the dials again.
Instructions by TSA lock style
Zipper lock with a reset button
- Set the current combination and remove both zipper pulls from the lock.
- Press the reset button until it clicks into the reset position. Some models require a pen for a recessed button.
- Turn the dials to the new combination.
- Press or slide the release/arrow button to save the code and return the reset button to its normal position if it does not do so automatically.
- Test the code with the pulls still out, then insert them and scramble the dials.
Combination padlock with a reset button
- Dial the current combination and open the shackle.
- Press and hold the reset button.
- Set each dial to the new combination while holding the button.
- Release the button, close the shackle, and test the new code before attaching the lock to the suitcase.
Latch lock with a reset button
- Set the current combination and open the latch.
- Hold the reset button with a ballpoint pen or pointed tool.
- Turn the dials to the new digits while the button remains depressed.
- Remove the pen and press the arrow or opening button to commit the new combination.
- Scramble and retest the dials while the suitcase is open.
Latch lock without a reset button
- Dial the current combination and open the latch.
- Hold the arrow or opening button in the release position.
- Set the new digits while holding that button.
- Release the button, scramble the dials, and verify that the new code opens the latch.
Latch lock with a slide selector
- Unlock and open the latch with the current code.
- Move the selector from A to B, or from OFF to SET, as marked on the lock.
- Turn the dials to the new combination.
- Move the selector back to its original position.
- Test the combination before closing the suitcase.
Strap or cable lock with a reset bar
- Open the lock using the current combination.
- Press the reset bar fully with a pointed tool.
- Keep the bar depressed while dialing the new combination.
- Release the bar to store the code.
- Scramble and test the lock while the strap or cable is not under load.
Manufacturer-specific SET control
Some luggage models, including Samsonite Lock Style 5, use a control that is moved to SET and then returned to its original position. Open the lock with the current code, move the control to SET, choose the new digits, and move the control back. Test the code with the suitcase open; the model’s printed instructions take precedence over this general sequence.

How to reset a code you already know
A reset is not a way to bypass a locked suitcase. In normal use, the lock must be open at its existing combination. Once open, follow the matching mechanism procedure above: engage the reset button, held release button, selector, or reset bar; set the digits; complete the save action; and test.

If you recently changed the code and the lock will not open, do not keep applying force. Check that every dial is centered on the index mark, that the zipper pulls are not pulling sideways on the latch, and that the lock is in its normal operating position rather than SET. Open the suitcase before making another reset attempt.
What to do if you forgot the combination
Try the documented factory code first
If the lock has never been changed, try 0-0-0 on a Travel Sentry-style lock. A factory setting is not universal, so check the luggage or lock manufacturer’s documentation when the model identifies another starting code.

Methodically test all three-digit combinations
Travel Sentry says most locks use three digits, giving 1,000 possibilities from 000 through 999. If the combination was changed and no record remains, test each code in order rather than skipping around. Travel Sentry estimates that trying all combinations manually takes about 20–30 minutes on a typical three-digit lock.
- Start at 000 and align the digits to the index mark.
- Operate the release gently; if it does not open, advance to 001.
- Continue through 009, 010 and every subsequent number until 999.
- When the latch or shackle opens, stop and write down the working code immediately.
- With the lock open, reset it using the appropriate model procedure and test the replacement code.
Do not use the TSA keyhole as a personal shortcut. Travel Sentry describes that keyway as part of an airport-security system operated with secure tools by authorized screeners, not as a user-accessible reset mechanism.

If the model has a different dial format, a damaged mechanism, or a jam that remains after checking alignment and zipper tension, contact the luggage or lock manufacturer, the retailer, or a qualified locksmith. Have the model name, proof of purchase if available, and a description of the lock style ready. A locksmith can advise on non-destructive service; forcing the latch may damage both the lock and the suitcase.

Why a correct code may appear not to work
| Symptom | Likely check | Safe action |
|---|---|---|
| The release will not move | A dial is between digits or zipper tension is pulling against the latch. | Center every digit on the index mark, push the zipper pulls toward the lock to remove load, and try the release gently. |
| The reset button will not click | The lock is not open at the current code, or the button is not being pressed in the required direction. | Unlock first and consult the model’s instructions; do not force the button. |
| The new code worked once but not again | The save step was incomplete or the selector/button was left in SET. | Open the lock with the known working code, repeat the exact save action, return the control to normal, and retest. |
| The dials turn but the latch remains closed | The latch is under pressure from a packed suitcase or misaligned zipper pulls. | Reduce pressure, keep the bag open, align the dials, and operate the release without tools. |
| The lock is damaged or seized | Internal failure, impact, corrosion, or forced operation. | Stop experimenting and contact the manufacturer, retailer, or a qualified locksmith. |
How TSA access differs from your combination
A TSA-accepted lock is designed so authorized airport security personnel can open it with secure tools during inspection without damaging the suitcase or lock. That access does not reveal your personal combination and does not provide a traveler with a reset method.
Use the visible control intended by the manufacturer: a reset button or pinhole, a held release button, a slide selector, or a reset bar. If you see a keyhole with a TSA marking, leave it alone during normal setup and troubleshooting.
How to choose a replacement TSA lock
When a lock is beyond repair, compare the features that affect installation and maintenance rather than choosing by the TSA logo alone.
Recommended Free Tools
| Feature | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Is it integrated into the suitcase or an external padlock? | Integrated locks match the case hardware; external locks can move between bags but add a separate item to manage. |
| Closure type | Does it secure zipper pulls, a rigid latch, a strap, or a cable? | The closure determines how much tension can reach the lock and which reset procedure applies. |
| Reset control | Is there a button, pinhole, held release, slide selector, or reset bar? | A clearly marked control makes future code changes and recovery easier. |
| Dial format | Does it use three digits or another number of wheels? | Three-digit locks have 1,000 possible combinations; another format changes both the setup and forgotten-code procedure. |
| Airport acceptance | Does the lock carry the recognized Travel Sentry acceptance marking? | Accepted locks are designed for authorized screening access; acceptance does not replace a user combination. |
| Documentation and service | Are model-specific instructions and replacement parts available? | Clear documentation is especially valuable when a reset control is hidden or unusual. |
Best practices before every trip
- Set or verify the combination while the suitcase is open.
- Test the release repeatedly before inserting zipper pulls or closing the latch.
- Write the combination in a secure password manager or private note, not on the luggage tag.
- Scramble the dials after closing the suitcase so the combination is not displayed.
- Keep the lock’s brand and model information with your travel records for support.
- Do not pack the only record of the combination inside the locked suitcase.
Quick reference: which procedure applies?
| Visible control | Reset action |
|---|---|
| Recessed button or pinhole | Press and hold or click it into reset, dial the new code, then release or operate the save button. |
| No reset button; arrow/release button | Hold the release button while changing digits, then let it go. |
| Slide marked SET | Move to SET, choose digits, and return the selector. |
| Strap or cable reset bar | Press the bar fully, change digits while holding it, and release. |
| Keyhole with TSA marking | Not a traveler reset control; use the combination and the model’s visible reset mechanism. |
When to stop and get help
Stop if a reset control bends, a shackle or latch does not move after the correct code and alignment checks, or the suitcase is under enough pressure that the closure cannot be released safely. The manufacturer or retailer may have model-specific replacement guidance, while a qualified locksmith can assess a locked or damaged mechanism without turning a minor lock problem into a broken suitcase.
