On the Xbox console that should carry your account’s offline digital licenses, sign in with the purchasing Microsoft account, open Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox, and follow the prompt shown on the console. Microsoft supports this Home-console designation on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. It lets eligible digital games, durable add-ons, and qualifying subscription content use a device license on that console, while your account keeps its separate user license.

No new console, accessory, physical disc, or subscription purchase is required just to activate Home Xbox. The important decisions are which console should receive the device license, which account owns the content, and whether the individual game or add-on supports the kind of offline or shared use you want.

What “Home Xbox” means

Microsoft defines a Home console as “An Xbox console designated to share the offline licenses of the purchasing account (also known as Home Xbox).” The designation attaches a device-based license to one Xbox console. The Microsoft account that bought the content retains a user-based license that can be used when that account signs in elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction explains why Home Xbox matters for offline access and household sharing. People using the designated console can use content licensed to the device, even when the purchasing account is not signed in. On another console, access normally follows the purchasing account instead.

Set the console as your Home Xbox

1. Choose the console that should hold the device license

Use the physical Xbox where you want the account’s digital games and other eligible content to work offline. In a household with two consoles, this is usually the console used by family members who need access without the purchasing account signed in. If you travel with one Xbox, you might instead designate the console that will most often be disconnected.

Because changing the designation moves the device licenses, do not make this selection casually if you regularly use more than one console. The previous Home console does not keep the old device entitlement after the change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Sign in with the purchasing account

On that console, sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account that purchased the digital content or has the subscription-enabled content you want available. This associates the designation with the account whose licenses are being assigned. If several people use the Xbox, check the account identity carefully before confirming; changing the setting while signed in to a different profile will not move another account’s purchases.

3. Open the Home Xbox setting

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Personalization.
  3. Open My home Xbox.

Microsoft documents this path in its Xbox Game Development Kit material: Product sharing model for games. The wording or arrangement around the setting can change with console software, but this is the documented location to begin.

4. Confirm the designation using the current on-screen prompt

After opening My home Xbox, follow the wording currently displayed by your console to designate it. Microsoft’s support page does not provide a consistently readable button sequence in the available documentation, so this guide does not guess at a button name. Menus can vary by console software version and account state.

If the console asks to connect to Xbox services, allow that connection so it can validate the account and apply the license change. The exact network prompt and sequence are controlled by the console’s current software. Do not assume that an old screenshot or a button label from another dashboard version will match your screen.

After confirmation, return to the setting if you need to verify which console is currently designated. Then sign out or switch to another profile and test an eligible digital game. A successful launch by another account is a practical check that the device-level sharing is active, although a particular game can still require online services.

What becomes available on the Home console

The Home console receives the purchasing account’s device-based license for eligible digital content. Microsoft’s Xbox sharing documentation says the device-level model covers the following categories:

  • Digital Xbox One and Xbox Series games that are licensed to the purchasing account.
  • Durable add-ons, such as permanent downloadable content associated with a game.
  • Content enabled as part of a subscription, where the subscription’s sharing rules permit it. Microsoft gives Xbox Game Pass content as an example of subscription-enabled content.

Other accounts using the designated console can access the shared device content without the purchasing account remaining signed in. This is why one person can buy a digital game and another profile on the Home console can play it. The account owner still retains the user-based license and can use that account on a different, roaming console.

Sharing is tied to the console designation, not to a particular second profile or household member. Anyone who signs in to the designated Home console may be able to use eligible device-licensed content, subject to the title’s own restrictions and the normal account and safety settings on that Xbox.

Consumable add-ons are different

Consumables are tied to the purchasing account rather than shared as a general device license. Examples can include items that are used up or granted to one account, depending on the individual product’s rules. Do not assume that every currency pack, boost, one-time bonus, or other consumable transfers to other profiles.

A permanent expansion, map pack, or other durable entitlement is a different category from an item that is spent in game. If a base game works for another profile but a currency balance or one-time grant does not appear, that difference may be expected rather than a Home Xbox failure.

  • HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.

Microsoft’s general rules also allow an individual digital product page to specify rights or limitations that differ from the normal model. Check the store listing for a particular game or add-on when its behavior matters, especially for subscription catalogs, special editions, virtual currency, and content tied to a single account.

Home console versus a roaming console

A console that is not designated as Home is often described in Microsoft’s model as a roaming console. The two contexts use different licenses and have different sharing behavior.

Access context License used Who can use the content Offline implication
Home console Device-based license assigned to the designated Xbox Other accounts on that console can use eligible games, durable add-ons, and qualifying subscription content This is the device-license context intended for offline access, subject to each title’s own requirements
Roaming console User-based license associated with the purchasing Microsoft account The purchaser can use the content while signed in; other users do not retain that roaming access after the purchaser signs out Microsoft’s model describes roaming access as requiring the purchaser to be signed in and connected

For digital Xbox One and Xbox Series games, Microsoft says the purchaser may install on a reasonable number of consoles, but a game can be played on only one console at a time. If the purchaser is playing on a roaming console, another person can use the Home console under its device license with a different account.

This arrangement is often useful for two-console households: designate Console A as Home, let another profile play there, and use the purchasing account on Console B. It does not create two independent user licenses or permit unlimited simultaneous play. If both consoles are being used by the purchasing account, or if a title has extra restrictions, the result can differ.

How offline play actually works

Setting a Home Xbox supplies the device-level license that allows eligible content to be recognized on that console without the purchasing account being online. It does not turn every game or service into an offline product.

A title can impose its own online-service requirement, server dependency, or license limitation. Microsoft’s Digital Goods usage rules explicitly allow the store page for a particular digital good to state rights or restrictions that differ from the general rules. A game that needs live servers for matchmaking, account validation, cloud features, or other functions may still fail to provide those functions without a connection.

Offline access also does not mean that online multiplayer, cloud saves, social features, streaming, or server-hosted events will continue during an outage. The device license can authorize the installed game while those network-dependent features remain unavailable. Subscription content can have additional eligibility rules if the subscription expires or the title leaves a catalog.

Before relying on a game during travel or an outage, check that title’s own requirements and start it on the designated console while your licenses are in good standing. If possible, test the specific profile and game mode you expect to use, then disconnect the network and launch again. The Home setting is the licensing foundation for offline use; it is not a promise that every mode, add-on, or service will work without a network.

Changing your Home Xbox: the five-change limit

Microsoft allows an account to change its Home console up to five times during a one-year rolling period. The period starts when the account first assigns or changes its Home console, rather than resetting automatically at the beginning of a calendar year.

For example, if the first assignment in a tracking period occurs in March, the relevant year is measured from that assignment and subsequent changes, not simply from January through December. Each change uses the account’s allowance. The exact availability date depends on the account’s own change history.

When the limit is reached, Microsoft says the Xbox displays a message with the next date on which another change is available. The device licenses automatically move to the newly designated Home console and operate only on that new Home console. The previous console no longer has the former device-level entitlement.

  • Assign the setting to the console that will be used most consistently.
  • Avoid switching merely to test a menu, lend access for a single session, or troubleshoot a title that has its own online requirement.
  • Keep the displayed availability date if you reach the limit; the rules do not promise an early reset.
  • Remember that moving Home Xbox affects every eligible purchase and qualifying subscription entitlement for that account, not just one game.

The current limit and rolling-period wording are in Microsoft’s Usage rules for Digital Goods. Do not plan on changing consoles repeatedly as a sharing workaround, and do not assume support can reset the allowance before the date shown by Xbox.

Before you change the setting

  • Confirm the account: use the account that owns the digital purchase or subscription entitlement. A different profile cannot move that account’s device license.
  • Confirm the hardware: the supported console families are Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
  • Confirm the content type: durable digital content is handled differently from consumable add-ons.
  • Plan for the change limit: you have up to five changes in the rolling one-year period.
  • Check title-specific rules: a game’s store page can impose requirements that the general Home-console model does not override.
  • Consider who needs offline access: the Home console should be the Xbox used by the profiles that need device-based access when the purchasing account is absent.
  • Make sure the game is installed or available: Home Xbox supplies licensing; it does not download a game or guarantee that a removed subscription title remains playable.

No special accessory, replacement part, repair tool, physical disc, or new console model is required for this configuration. A second console is relevant only if you actually need another Xbox on which to assign the account’s Home designation. There is no separate Home Xbox activation fee. If you decide to buy another Xbox, evaluate that as a hardware purchase rather than a requirement for the setting.

If another account cannot use a game on the Home console

Verify the designation and account

Return to Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox while signed in with the purchasing account. Make sure you changed the setting on the console the other person is using, not on a different Xbox. The device license belongs to the one currently designated Home console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also check that the other person is signed in to a separate Xbox profile on that same console. The Home designation does not transfer ownership of the purchasing account or its credentials; it supplies device-level access to eligible content.

Separate durable content from consumables

If the missing item is an in-game currency pack, one-time grant, or another consumable, the lack of sharing may be expected. Microsoft ties consumable add-ons to the purchasing account. Test with the base digital game or a durable expansion instead.

Check whether the title requires online services

A shared license can authorize the game on the device without making its servers available. If the game launches but a mode or feature is unavailable offline, consult the title’s store description and service requirements rather than repeatedly changing Home Xbox.

Check the account’s change status

If the console reports that no more changes are available, wait until the date shown in the message. The five-change allowance is rolling, and Microsoft’s rules do not establish a general way to bypass that date. Changing unrelated settings, reinstalling the game, or signing in with another profile does not create another allowance for the purchasing account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allow the console to complete licensing checks

If the setting does not apply, keep the console connected when the on-screen flow requests an Xbox-services connection, then reopen the setting and follow the displayed confirmation steps. Exact prompts can change with console software, so use the wording on your screen rather than an old screenshot or button label. If the console is offline and the setting has not yet been successfully applied, reconnect before treating the result as a licensing problem.

Practical examples

One console, several profiles

You buy a digital Xbox game with Account A and designate the family Xbox as Home for Account A. Account B can sign in on that Xbox and use the eligible game without Account A staying signed in. A consumable currency pack bought by Account A may still be visible only to Account A.

Two consoles

Console 1 is the Home Xbox for Account A. Another person plays there with Account B. Account A signs in on Console 2, which is roaming, and plays using the user-based license. This is the normal two-console sharing pattern described by Microsoft, but the same digital game is still subject to the one-console-at-a-time play rule.

Travel or an outage

You take the designated Home console to a location without reliable internet. Eligible installed games can use the device license, but a title that depends on live servers, online authentication, or cloud features may still be limited. Test the exact game before travel instead of assuming the Home setting overrides every network requirement.

Common questions about Home Xbox and offline access

Can I use Home Xbox on Xbox One and Xbox Series?

Yes. Microsoft’s Digital Goods rules cover Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles, and the Home-console model is documented for both console generations.

Does the purchaser need to stay signed in on the Home console?

No for eligible device-shared content. Microsoft’s Xbox documentation says the purchasing account does not need to remain signed in while other accounts use shared content on the Home console. The purchaser does need to use the account-based license when playing on a roaming console.

Does Home Xbox share every purchase?

No. Games, durable add-ons, and qualifying subscription-enabled content can use the device-sharing model; consumable add-ons remain tied to the purchasing account, and a particular product’s store page can state different limitations.

Can two consoles play the same digital game at once?

Microsoft’s rules say digital Xbox One and Xbox Series games can be installed on a reasonable number of consoles but can be played on only one console at a time. The usual two-console arrangement is the purchaser using the account-based license on a roaming console while another user plays on the Home console.

Will every game work without internet after I set Home Xbox?

No. The designation provides the device license needed for eligible offline access, but individual games and services can require an online connection or impose their own license restrictions.

How many times can I change Home Xbox?

Microsoft allows up to five changes during a one-year rolling period. The period begins with the first assignment or change in that period. If you reach the limit, Xbox displays the next date when another change is available.

What happens to the old Home Xbox after I switch?

The device licenses automatically move to the newly designated Home console. The old console no longer has that device-level entitlement, so other profiles there may lose access to the purchasing account’s shared content unless another valid license applies.

Do I need to buy Game Pass or a second Xbox?

No. You do not need to buy a subscription, new console, accessory, or physical copy to designate Home Xbox. Subscription-enabled content can be shared when the subscription and title rules allow it, but buying a subscription is not what activates the Home setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I share consumable currency or one-time bonuses?

Generally no. Microsoft identifies consumable add-ons as tied to the purchasing account. Check the individual product listing because specific digital goods can state their own rights and limitations.

Why does a game work online but not offline?

Home Xbox supplies the device license, but a game may still need its servers for authentication, multiplayer, cloud features, or other functions. Review that title’s requirements and test it while disconnected before relying on it away from a network.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the exact path to Home Xbox?

On the console signed in with the purchasing account, open Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox, then follow the current on-screen confirmation prompt.

Does Home Xbox work offline?

It provides the device-based license needed for eligible offline use, but a game can still require online services or impose title-specific restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many Home Xbox changes are allowed?

Up to five changes are allowed during a rolling one-year period. Xbox shows the next available date if the limit is reached.

What content is shared?

Eligible digital games, durable add-ons, and qualifying subscription-enabled content can be shared on the Home console. Consumable add-ons generally remain tied to the purchasing account.

Does the purchaser have to remain signed in?

Not for eligible device-shared content on the Home console. On a roaming console, the purchaser normally uses the account-based license while signed in and connected.

The Bottom Line

Sign in with the purchasing account, open Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox, and confirm the console shown on screen. The Home Xbox receives the account’s device license for eligible digital games, durable add-ons, and qualifying subscription content, allowing other profiles to use that content. Consumables and title-specific online requirements are exceptions, and Microsoft limits changes to five in a rolling year.
