To stop music or video playback on a timer, open Clock on your iPhone, set a duration under Timers, and choose Stop Playing under When Timer Ends. Tap Set, then Start. Apple says the timer continues if you switch apps or your iPhone goes to sleep.
Set the iPhone Clock timer to stop playback
- Open the Clock app.
- Tap Timers and choose how long playback should continue.
- Tap When Timer Ends.
- Scroll to the bottom of the sound list and select Stop Playing.
- Tap Set, then tap Start.
Apple describes this as a way to stop audio or video after a chosen amount of time. Its instructions do not list compatibility for individual third-party apps or playback routes, so behavior may vary.

Use Siri instead
If you prefer a voice command, ask Siri to stop the music after a duration. Apple’s example is: “Stop the music in one hour.” This avoids setting the duration manually in Clock.
Restore a normal timer alert afterward
Choosing Stop Playing applies to subsequent timers too. To hear an alert sound on a later timer, open Clock > Timers > When Timer Ends and select a sound instead.

Set a timer for Background Sounds
Background Sounds has its own timer control: go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Background Sounds. From there, you can set sounds to stop at a specific time or after a duration. This is separate from the Clock timer used for ordinary audio or video playback.
Regional availability
Apple notes that not all features are available in every country or region. Interface labels may also change as iOS is updated.
