On an iPhone 15 or later, go to Settings > Battery > Charging and choose a limit from 80% to 100% in 5% increments. To let iOS pause at about 80% and finish near your normal unplug time, leave the limit at 100% and turn on Optimized Battery Charging. On an iPhone 14 or earlier, the newer selectable limit is not available; use Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging to control Optimized Battery Charging.
Which iPhones have a selectable charging limit?
The menu depends on the iPhone generation. Apple documents the selectable Charge Limit for iPhone 15 and later. Those models let you set a maximum between 80% and 100% in 5% steps. iPhone 14 and earlier do not have that newer control in Apple’s documented settings; they offer Optimized Battery Charging instead.

Apple can change labels or screen layout in a later iOS release, and labels may be translated differently on your device. If a menu name differs slightly, use the Battery settings screen and look for Charging or Battery Health & Charging.
How to set an iPhone charging limit
iPhone 15 and later
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Charging.
- Choose the maximum percentage you want, from 80% to 100% in 5% increments.
The selected value is a ceiling rather than a promise that the battery will always display exactly that number. Apple says the iPhone charges to within a few percentage points of the selected limit and then stops. If the battery falls by more than 5% while the phone remains connected to power, charging resumes toward the limit.

An iPhone can occasionally charge to 100% even when you selected a lower limit. Apple describes this as an intentional step to maintain accurate state-of-charge estimates. It is expected behavior and does not by itself indicate a failed setting or a defective battery.
How to stop an iPhone at 80%
On an iPhone 15 or later, follow the same path and select 80%. The phone will normally remain close to that level while connected, with the few-percentage-point tolerance and occasional calibration charge described above. There is no equivalent user-selectable 80% cap documented for iPhone 14 and earlier.
How to turn on Optimized Battery Charging
iPhone 15 and later
Set the Charge Limit to 100% at Settings > Battery > Charging. Then check that Optimized Battery Charging is enabled if you want iOS to delay the final portion of a long charge. At a 100% limit, the feature can pause charging beyond roughly 80% and finish closer to the time it predicts you normally unplug.

- Turn Optimized Battery Charging on or off.
Apple says Optimized Battery Charging is on by default when an iPhone is set up. If you switch it off, the phone can charge straight to 100% rather than deliberately delaying the final part of a predictable long charging session.
Charge Limit and Optimized Battery Charging do different jobs
These settings are related but should not be treated as interchangeable.

Apple describes the purpose of optimized charging as reducing wear by reducing the time the iPhone spends fully charged. A lower Charge Limit pursues the same general battery-care goal by lowering the normal maximum. Neither setting guarantees a particular battery lifespan or a specific number of additional months or charge cycles.
Choosing the right percentage
Apple provides the percentage choices but does not establish one universally best value. Choose based on how much energy you need before the next opportunity to recharge and how often the phone sits connected for hours.

This is a convenience decision, not a medical-style prescription for battery health. A setting that leaves you short of power can be counterproductive if it forces frequent emergency charging or leaves you unable to use the phone when needed.

How the percentage setting behaves while connected
A Charge Limit is not a charger shutoff switch that reacts to every single percentage point. Apple says the iPhone targets a level within a few percentage points of your selected value. Small fluctuations while the phone remains plugged in are therefore normal. Once the level falls by more than 5%, the iPhone resumes charging toward the limit.
For example, with an 85% limit, the phone may stop slightly below or above the displayed number, remain connected without continuously charging, and then top up again after enough drain has occurred. Background activity, signal searching, accessories, screen use, and heat can all make the displayed percentage move. The control is intended to manage the normal maximum, not to hold a mathematically exact number every second.
The occasional 100% charge is a separate calibration behavior. iOS uses a full charge from time to time to keep its state-of-charge estimate accurate. Do not repeatedly change the setting or disconnect the cable just because one calibration cycle reaches 100%.

There are two normal explanations. First, an iPhone 15 or later may have a Charge Limit set to 80% (or another value near it). Second, Optimized Battery Charging may have paused the charge above about 80% because iOS expects the phone to remain connected for a long time.
With Optimized Battery Charging, the pause is not guaranteed every night. Apple says the feature learns your routine for at least 14 days and needs at least nine charges of five hours or more in a given location before it engages. Irregular schedules, travel, a new location, or a short charging session can prevent a pause. In those situations the iPhone may go directly to 100%.
At a lower Charge Limit, the phone may still show 100% occasionally for calibration. That exception is different from Optimized Battery Charging’s temporary pause and does not mean the selected limit has been ignored permanently.
How to charge to 100% now
When Optimized Battery Charging is paused
When the feature has delayed charging, the Lock Screen can show a notification with the estimated time of full charge. Touch and hold that notification and choose Charge Now. Apple also documents a Resume Charging option in Settings > Battery.
When a Charge Limit is set below 100%
The exact temporary action depends on the iOS version and the controls displayed on your iPhone. Apple documents options such as Allow Until Tomorrow, which returns to the selected limit at 6:00 a.m., and Charge to 100% or Set Limit to 100%. Select the full-charge action visible on your device rather than assuming every iPhone uses the same wording.

If you change the limit to 100% permanently, return to Settings > Battery > Charging later and select your preferred lower value.
Why Optimized Battery Charging may not appear to work
The routine has not been learned yet
The feature needs a pattern, not just one overnight charge. Allow at least 14 days and at least nine five-hour-or-longer charges in the same location before judging its behavior. This is Apple’s stated learning requirement, not a promise that it will activate after exactly that period.
Your schedule or location changed
Optimized Battery Charging predicts when you will unplug. Travel, a new workplace, changing shift patterns, or irregular charging times reduce the information available for that prediction. The phone may therefore complete 100% immediately.

On iPhone 15 and later, Optimized Battery Charging is associated with a 100% Charge Limit. If you selected 80%, 85%, 90%, or 95%, the lower ceiling is the active control; do not expect the schedule-based pause to operate as a second, visible cap.
The charge session is too short
A brief connection may end before iOS predicts a long stay on power. The feature is intended for extended, routine charging periods, not every plug-in event.
You are looking for a fixed 80% rule
Optimized Battery Charging is not a permanent 80% limiter. It may pause above 80% and later finish to 100%. If you need a regular maximum, use the Charge Limit on iPhone 15 or later.
How to tell which control is active
Start with the menu you can see. A visible percentage selector under Settings > Battery > Charging means the iPhone is using the Charge Limit system. The selected number is the normal ceiling. If the selector reads 100%, Optimized Battery Charging can also manage the timing of the final part of a long session.

Battery temperature matters as much as the percentage setting
Battery wear depends on more than the selected limit. Apple says chemical aging is affected by factors including temperature history and charging pattern. Ambient temperatures above 95°F (35°C) can permanently reduce battery lifespan, and iOS may limit charging above 80% when battery temperature exceeds recommended conditions.
- Move the iPhone to a cooler environment if it feels unusually hot while charging.
- Avoid leaving it in direct sun or in a hot vehicle during a charge.
- Do not interpret a temperature-related pause as proof that the Charge Limit is malfunctioning.
- Allow the phone to cool before troubleshooting the setting itself.
Heat can matter even when your chosen percentage is sensible. A lower limit does not make charging in a hot car safe, and a 100% limit does not cause every pause. Consider the environment, cable and adapter placement, case heat retention, and demanding use such as navigation or gaming while plugged in.
The 80% to 100% choices are therefore one battery-care tool, not a substitute for managing heat or choosing a charging routine that fits your actual use.

A practical setup for common situations
Mostly desk-based use
Set an iPhone 15 or later to 80% or 85% if that comfortably covers your day. When you need more capacity, use the temporary full-charge control instead of leaving the limit at 100% all the time.
Overnight charging with a regular wake-up time
Set the limit to 100% and leave Optimized Battery Charging enabled. Give it the learning time Apple specifies. Once it recognizes the routine, it may pause above 80% and complete the charge near the predicted unplug time.
Variable shifts, travel, or frequent long trips
Use 90%, 95%, or 100% according to the reserve you need. Optimized Battery Charging may be less predictable when your location and schedule change, so a fixed Charge Limit can be easier to understand on iPhone 15 and later.
Older iPhone without Charge Limit
Use Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging to keep Optimized Battery Charging on. You cannot reproduce a permanent 80% cap through Apple’s documented settings on these models.
What the settings cannot tell you
Apple’s guidance does not quantify a guaranteed lifespan gain for choosing 80%, 85%, 90%, 95%, or 100%. The settings are designed to reduce high-state-of-charge exposure, but the result for an individual battery depends on use, heat, charging frequency, and chemical age. A percentage choice should therefore be judged by whether it provides enough daily capacity while reducing unnecessary time at full charge, not by an unsupported promise of a precise service-life extension.

Apple’s December 12, 2025 support guidance describes the goal this way: “Optimized Battery Charging is designed to reduce the wear on your battery and improve its lifespan by reducing the time your iPhone spends fully charged.” That is a design objective, not a guarantee that every user will gain a fixed number of cycles or months.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting an older phone to show Charging: iPhone 14 and earlier use Battery Health & Charging instead.
- Treating optimized charging as an 80% cap: it can pause near 80%, then complete 100% later.
- Assuming every night will be identical: the feature depends on at least 14 days of learning, repeated five-hour-or-longer sessions, location, and schedule.
- Changing the permanent limit for a single trip: use the temporary control when available, then let the normal limit return.
- Troubleshooting while the phone is hot: cool the device first because thermal protection can independently reduce charging.
- Chasing an exact displayed percentage: Apple allows a few-percentage-point tolerance and occasional calibration to 100%.

- Cannot find Charging: confirm that the iPhone is an iPhone 15 or later, then open Settings > Battery. Older models use Battery Health & Charging.

- Charging stops above 80% while the phone is hot: cool the phone and charging area. Temperature protection can limit charging independently of your selected preference.
- You need a full battery only once: use the temporary override rather than changing the permanent limit, then verify the original limit afterward.
