Use the Services console for a one-time change: open services.msc, open the service’s Properties, choose Manual or Automatic in Startup type, then select Apply and OK. This setting controls how Windows starts the service in the future; it does not by itself start or stop the service right now.

For scripting, use an elevated Command Prompt with sc.exe config or an elevated PowerShell window with Set-Service. Always use the service’s internal name when running a command, and verify the resulting StartType and Status.

What a Windows service startup type does

A startup type tells the Service Control Manager when a service is allowed to start. It is separate from the service’s current state. A service can be configured for Automatic and be stopped at this moment, or configured for Manual and be running because an application started it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Startup type What Windows does Important consequence
Manual The service can be started by a user, the Service Control Manager, or an application. A Manual service may still start when an Automatic service depends on it.
Automatic Windows starts the service during system startup. Use it only when the service’s role or the software vendor requires availability at boot.
Automatic (Delayed Start) Windows starts it after other Automatic services have started. Delayed start is a distinct option; do not substitute it for ordinary Automatic unless the delay is intentional.
Disabled Windows and applications cannot start the service. You must change the startup type to an enabled value before it can start.

Microsoft describes Manual as an enabled, on-demand mode, not as a disabled mode. A dependency can therefore start a Manual service without you opening Services yourself. Conversely, Disabled prevents startup until you change the configuration.

Startup type is a configuration value, not a performance score. Making more services Automatic can lengthen initialization and consume resources, while changing a service to Manual can prevent an application from finding a component when it expects it at boot. The correct value depends on the service’s role, dependencies, and the software or administrator policy that installed it.

Check the service before changing it

Identify the correct entry

Open the Services list and read the service description before editing anything. The friendly label you see in the list is the display name; command-line tools normally require the service’s internal service name. Similar display names can refer to different services, so do not copy a command until you have confirmed the identity on that computer.

To find the internal name, double-click the entry and inspect the service properties. The General tab shows the service name separately from the display name. Record the spelling exactly, including capitalization and any punctuation. If a command reports that the service cannot be found, this distinction is the first thing to check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the required behavior

Use the application vendor’s documented requirement or your organization’s policy. There is no safe, general rule to make every service Automatic, and disabling services merely to speed boot can break software, networking, updates, security controls, or dependencies.

Before changing a production computer, note the existing startup type and the reason for the change. If you are troubleshooting, capture the current value and status so you can restore them. A startup-type change does not repair a failed executable, missing dependency, invalid credential, or application configuration problem.

Use an account allowed to modify services

Changing service configuration commonly requires administrator rights. If Windows refuses the change, sign in with an authorized account or reopen the management tool with elevation. Elevation does not override organizational policy, service protection, or a per-user service design.

On a shared or managed device, ask the administrator before changing a service. A policy or software installer can intentionally enforce a value, and a local edit may be reversed during the next policy refresh or update.

Set Manual or Automatic in the Services console

The graphical method is the clearest choice for a single computer. The workflow below follows the classic Microsoft Management Console interface. Current Windows 10 and Windows 11 builds retain this workflow, although wording or surrounding controls can vary on managed devices.

  1. Open Start, type Services, and select the Services app. Alternatively, press Win+R, enter services.msc, and press Enter. Computer Management also contains the Services snap-in.
  2. Scroll to the target service. Check its description and, if necessary, open it once to distinguish the display name from the internal service name.
  3. Right-click the service and select Properties.
  4. On the General tab, locate Startup type.
  5. Select Manual or Automatic. Choose Automatic (Delayed Start) only when delayed startup is specifically required.
  6. Select Apply, then OK. Close and reopen the properties dialog if you want to confirm that the selector retained the value.

The Start and Stop buttons in the same dialog are separate controls. Use Start if the service must run immediately, or Stop if you intentionally need to halt its current process. Changing Startup type alone changes future startup behavior and does not guarantee a change to the present status.

If the service is currently running and you select Manual, it normally remains running until it is stopped by an administrator, an application, or Windows. If you select Automatic while it is stopped, Windows does not necessarily launch it at that instant; start it separately only after confirming that immediate startup is safe.

Verify the configuration and current state

Refresh the Services console and reopen the service properties to check the selected startup type. For a precise check, PowerShell displays the internal name, configured startup type, and current state together:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Get-Service -Name 'ServiceName' | Select-Object Name, StartType, Status

Replace ServiceName with the actual internal name. StartType reports the configuration; Status reports whether the service is currently running, stopped, paused, or in another state. These are independent results, so a successful startup-type change can legitimately leave Status as Stopped.

Run the verification after the change and again after a restart if boot behavior is the issue. If the value is correct immediately but different after reboot, investigate policy, an installer, an update, or a security product instead of repeatedly applying the same setting.

Set the startup type with Command Prompt and sc.exe

sc.exe is useful for repeatable commands and systems where you do not want to use the graphical console. Open Command Prompt with Run as administrator, then use the internal service name.

Set Manual

sc.exe config ServiceName start= demand

The demand value means the service is started on demand, which corresponds to Manual in the Services interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set Automatic

sc.exe config ServiceName start= auto

The auto value configures startup at system startup.

Mind the required space

Microsoft’s sc.exe config syntax requires a space between the option’s equals sign and its value: start= demand, not start=demand. A missing space can produce a syntax error or leave the setting unchanged. This spacing rule applies even though many other command syntaxes accept an equals sign with no following space.

Inspect the service with sc.exe

sc.exe query ServiceName

This command reports the service’s current state and confirms that the name resolves to an installed service. Use the Services console or PowerShell when you also need to inspect the configured startup type. The SC utility queries or modifies the installed-services database, so a successful command still deserves a verification step.

Use the command safely in a script

Test a command against one known service before placing it in a larger script. Quote a service name in PowerShell when needed, but pass the exact internal name to sc.exe. Keep a record of the old setting if a script may be rolled back, and do not assume the same service name exists on every edition or image of Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the startup type with PowerShell

PowerShell is preferable when you need a scriptable command, a clear verification step, or the same operation on multiple computers. Open PowerShell as administrator unless your account and policy explicitly permit service changes without elevation.

Set Manual

Set-Service -Name 'ServiceName' -StartupType Manual

Set Automatic

Set-Service -Name 'ServiceName' -StartupType Automatic

Set-Service changes service properties; it does not automatically start a service merely because you selected Automatic. If the service must run now, start it separately after confirming that doing so is safe for the application.

Verify in the same session

Get-Service -Name 'ServiceName' | Select-Object Name, StartType, Status

Windows PowerShell 5.1 documentation lists Manual, Automatic, and Disabled startup values. Current PowerShell 7.6 documentation identifies the cmdlet as Windows-only and also supports AutomaticDelayedStart:

Set-Service -Name 'ServiceName' -StartupType AutomaticDelayedStart

Use the delayed value only when the service is intended to start after ordinary Automatic services. If your installed PowerShell version does not accept that value, use the Services console or the version of PowerShell documented for your environment rather than guessing a replacement command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For several computers, an administrator can combine PowerShell with approved remoting or a management system. The target computer still needs the appropriate authorization, and the service name must be confirmed on each system. Keep a single-device test and verification step before deploying a bulk change.

Choose the setting for the service’s role

Choose Manual when startup should be on demand

Manual is appropriate when an application, administrator, or dependency should start the service only when it is needed. It keeps the service enabled without forcing it to launch at every boot. Remember that a dependency can still trigger it automatically.

Manual does not mean “never start.” A user action, an application request, or the Service Control Manager can start it. Therefore, seeing a Manual service in the Running state is not evidence that Windows ignored your setting.

Choose Automatic when the service must be ready at boot

Automatic is appropriate for a service that the operating system or an application requires as soon as Windows starts. Apply this setting because the service’s documented role calls for it, not as a generic performance tweak.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Automatic (Delayed Start) when boot ordering matters

Delayed start lets other Automatic services initialize first. It is useful only when a short delay is acceptable and the service’s requirements support that ordering. It is not interchangeable with ordinary Automatic. If another component expects the service during the earliest boot phase, delaying it can cause a failure.

Do not confuse Disabled with Manual

Disabled blocks startup entirely. If troubleshooting instructions ask you to re-enable a disabled service, first change its startup type to Manual, Automatic, or another enabled value; only then can Windows or an application start it.

Microsoft states, “To start a disabled service, change the start type to some other value.” Changing the value makes startup possible; it does not itself prove that the service has started successfully.

When the setting is unavailable or does not stay changed

The Startup type control is greyed out or an error appears

  • Confirm that you selected the intended service and that your account has permission to modify it.
  • Close Services, reopen it with an authorized elevated account, and try again.
  • Check whether the entry is a per-user service instance or is controlled by an administrative policy. Per-user service templates and policy-managed services can expose controls differently from ordinary system services.
  • Do not assume every inaccessible control is a simple permissions problem; service protection and vendor-specific design can also restrict changes.

If elevation is required, Windows may show a User Account Control prompt. Approve it only when you recognize the tool and the requested change. An elevated window does not grant permission to override a domain policy or a vendor’s protected service configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The command says the service was not found

The command probably used the display name instead of the internal name, or the service is not installed on that computer. In Services, open the properties dialog and copy the exact service name shown there, then rerun the command with that value. If the entry is a per-user instance, confirm that you are working in the intended user context.

The value changes back after a restart

Check software configuration, device-management policy, and the vendor’s instructions. An installer, update, security product, or administrator policy may deliberately enforce a startup mode. Repeatedly forcing a different value can create a configuration conflict.

The service starts even though it is Manual

That behavior can be expected. A user, application, Service Control Manager request, or dependency can start a Manual service. Check dependent services and the application that requested it before treating the startup as a failure.

A disabled service will not start

Change its startup type to an enabled value first. Microsoft documents the rule directly: “To start a disabled service, change the start type to some other value.” After changing it, use the Start action separately if it must run immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The service starts but the application still fails

Startup type only controls when Windows attempts to launch the service. Check the service’s current Status, dependent services, application logs, credentials, and vendor-specific prerequisites. The Windows mechanisms do not establish the correct configuration for every named service.

The service is running but the status appears stale

Refresh the Services console or query it again with Get-Service. A status check taken before the service finishes starting can differ from a later check. Verify both the configured type and the current state rather than relying on a single visual field.

Regular services, per-user services, and managed computers

Most entries you edit in Services are conventional system services with a machine-wide configuration. Windows also creates per-user service instances from templates. Their lifecycle and available controls can differ by user session, and an organization may manage their settings through policy.

On a managed computer, coordinate changes with the administrator. A local change that appears successful can be overwritten at the next policy refresh or software update. For application-specific services, follow the application’s deployment documentation before changing startup behavior.

Do not treat a per-user service like a machine-wide service simply because it appears in the same console. If the available controls, name, or behavior seem unusual, identify the template or management policy first and ask the administrator or vendor for the supported procedure.

Which method should you use?

Method Best fit What you need Distinct limitation or detail
Services console One-off, visual change on a single computer Access to services.msc and permission to edit the service Displays friendly names; exact labels can vary on current or managed Windows builds.
sc.exe config Command Prompt scripts and quick repeatable changes Elevated Command Prompt and the internal service name Uses demand for Manual and auto for Automatic; the space after start= is required.
Set-Service PowerShell scripts, verification, and administration across systems Elevated PowerShell where required and the internal service name PowerShell 7.6 supports AutomaticDelayedStart; the cmdlet is Windows-only.

All three methods change the same underlying startup configuration when they apply to the target service. Choose based on whether you prefer a graphical workflow or scripting, whether you know the internal name, whether elevation is available, and whether the service is ordinary or managed as a per-user instance.

The GUI is easiest when you need to inspect descriptions and avoid typing an internal name. sc.exe is compact and available in Command Prompt, but its syntax is less forgiving. PowerShell combines the change with structured verification and is the better fit for repeatable administration. None of the methods determines whether Manual, Automatic, or delayed startup is correct for a particular application; that decision remains service-specific.

Safe change checklist

  • Read the service description and confirm the exact target.
  • Find the internal service name before using a command.
  • Record the existing startup type when troubleshooting or changing a production computer.
  • Confirm the vendor or administrator requires Manual, Automatic, or delayed startup.
  • Open the chosen tool with the necessary administrative authority.
  • Change only Startup type unless you also intentionally need to start or stop the service.
  • Verify both StartType and Status after the change.
  • If Windows reverses the value, investigate policy, software updates, and per-user management instead of repeatedly forcing it.
  • After a reboot-related change, verify behavior after restarting during an approved maintenance window.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing a service to Automatic start it immediately?

No. Automatic controls startup at system boot. Use the service’s Start action or an approved command separately if it must run now, and verify Status afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Manual the same as Disabled?

No. Manual is enabled and allows a user, application, Service Control Manager, or dependency to start the service. Disabled blocks startup until you select an enabled startup type.

Why does a Manual service start by itself?

An application, the Service Control Manager, or an Automatic service that depends on it can start a Manual service. That behavior is allowed by the Manual setting.

What is the difference between a display name and a service name?

The display name is the friendly label shown in Services. Commands such as sc.exe and Set-Service generally require the internal service name shown in the service’s properties.

Why does sc.exe config reject my command?

Use an elevated Command Prompt, confirm the internal service name, and include the required space after the equals sign: start= demand or start= auto.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use PowerShell to set delayed automatic startup?

Current PowerShell 7.6 documentation supports AutomaticDelayedStart with Set-Service. Use it only when delayed startup is intended and your installed version accepts that value.

Why is Startup type greyed out?

The service may require administrative authorization, be a per-user instance, be protected by its vendor, or be controlled by organizational policy. Elevation alone may not override those restrictions.

What should I do if the setting changes back after reboot?

Check device-management policy, software installers or updates, security products, and vendor instructions. A managed component may be deliberately enforcing the value.

Should I make every service Automatic to improve reliability?

No. Automatic is appropriate only when the service must be available at system startup. Follow the service vendor’s requirement or administrator policy; broad changes can affect boot time, dependencies, and application behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For a single PC, open services.msc, choose the service’s Properties, set Startup type to Manual, Automatic, or intentionally delayed Automatic, then apply the change. For scripts, use sc.exe config ServiceName start= demand|auto or Set-Service in an authorized PowerShell session. Confirm the internal service name and verify both StartType and Status; startup type controls future behavior and is not the same as starting or stopping the service now.
