Set the server greeting by changing the welcome_message value in the active server_config.sii file. Stop the server, replace the empty value with quoted text of no more than 127 characters, save it, and start the server again. Managed hosts usually expose the same setting in a Server Config editor.
What the welcome message controls
welcome_message is a dedicated-server session setting for Euro Truck Simulator 2 (ETS2) and American Truck Simulator (ATS). It is not a setting in a normal single-player profile. The message is loaded by the dedicated server and is documented to appear in in-game chat when players connect.

Before you edit anything
Identify how the server is deployed
Your editing path depends on who controls the server files:

- Self-hosted server: you edit
server_config.siiin the ETS2 or ATS dedicated-server home directory. - Managed hosting: you normally use the provider’s control panel, such as its Settings > Server Config page, rather than changing a local copy.
- Containerized deployment: the container may generate or update the configuration from an environment variable and a configured file path.
Use the configuration belonging to the server instance players actually join. A common reason for an apparently ignored change is editing a different installation, a backup, or a local file while a hosting panel regenerates the live file.
Plan a short, unambiguous message
The official configuration reference limits the welcome message to 127 characters. The limit applies to the message value itself, so count the wording you intend players to read and leave room for punctuation. Keep the text inside quotation marks in the configuration file.

Set the message in six steps
- Install or open the correct dedicated-server tool. SCS Software publishes separate dedicated-server tools for ETS2 and ATS. Open the tool and installation associated with the game your players use.
- Stop the server. Do this before changing the configuration. A running process can keep the old value in memory or overwrite a file when it shuts down.
- Open the active configuration. In a self-hosted installation, open
server_config.siiin the server or game home directory. In a managed panel, open Settings > Server Config (the exact labels can change as a provider updates its interface). - Find
welcome_message. Locate the linewelcome_message: ""and replace only the value between the quotation marks. - Save the change. In a file editor, save
server_config.siiwithout changing its filename. In a panel, use its save or apply control and wait for the panel to confirm the update. - Start or restart the server. The documented hosting sequence is stop, edit, save, and start. The restart causes the dedicated server to read the new value.
After the server is online, join with a test account or ask another player to connect. Check the in-game chat for the greeting. This confirms that you changed the live instance rather than only a local or inactive copy.

Editing a self-hosted server
Locate the right file
The dedicated-server configuration is named server_config.sii. Open the copy in the home directory used by the ETS2 or ATS server process. If you operate more than one instance, each instance can have its own home directory and therefore its own configuration file.
Stop the process before opening the file for editing. If you use a service manager or startup script, use that service’s stop command; if you launch the dedicated-server tool manually, close it according to the tool’s normal shutdown procedure. The important requirement is that the game server is no longer running while the file is changed.
Change only the parameter value
Preserve the parameter name and the configuration syntax. A valid replacement has this form:
welcome_message: "Your text here"For instance:
welcome_message: "Welcome drivers! Follow the posted rules and have a safe trip."Keep the complete message below the documented 127-character maximum. If your wording approaches the limit, shorten it rather than relying on truncation. Save the file, then start the server and verify the result in chat.

Protect the change
- Make a backup of
server_config.siibefore editing if you maintain the server yourself. - Keep the backup associated with the correct ETS2 or ATS instance; similarly named files from another server can look interchangeable but are not necessarily active.
- After game, tool, or deployment updates, confirm that the active configuration still contains the intended value.
Editing through a managed hosting panel
Use the panel’s live configuration editor
Managed providers commonly expose the underlying setting without giving you direct file-system access. The documented workflow is Settings > Server Config, followed by editing the welcome-message field, saving, and starting the server again.
Do not edit a downloaded or local copy when the panel owns the live configuration. A panel can regenerate server_config.sii from its stored settings, causing a manual local edit to disappear. Make the change in the panel that starts and stops the server you intend to modify.
Allow for panel-specific labels
Control-panel layouts vary. Look for a server configuration editor or a field named welcome_message; the exact navigation text can differ from the documented path after a provider redesign. The underlying value remains the same, and the server still needs to be stopped before editing and started again afterward.
Container and automated deployments
For containerized ETS2 or ATS deployments, the LsHallo project exposes an ETS_SERVER_WELCOME_MESSAGE environment variable and supports a configurable server_config.sii path. This allows an automated deployment to supply the greeting without an interactive file edit.

A safe automation sequence mirrors the manual one:
- Set
ETS_SERVER_WELCOME_MESSAGEto the intended text, keeping it under 127 characters. - Ensure the variable is applied to the container or service that hosts the active server instance.
- Confirm that the deployment writes the expected
server_config.siipath rather than another volume or image layer. - Redeploy or restart the server so the generated configuration is loaded.
- Connect with a test account and verify the greeting in chat.
If a container is recreated, values supplied only through an ephemeral shell or an edited container layer can be lost. Store the environment setting and configuration path in the deployment definition used to recreate the service.

These are technical limits from the reference; its publication year is not stated. The lobby limits do not increase the allowance for welcome_message. Keep each field within its own limit.
How to verify that the message is live
- Confirm the server has fully stopped before the edit and fully started afterward.
- Check the active configuration or panel field and verify that the text is present between quotation marks.
- Join the server with a test account, or have another player connect after the restart.
- Look in in-game chat for the configured greeting.
- If the message is absent, follow the troubleshooting branches below instead of repeatedly changing unrelated server settings.
The provider documentation describes the expected display in in-game chat. No independent usage survey or outcome measurement establishes how often servers use a greeting or whether it changes player behavior.

The old message or no message appears
- Check the active instance: make sure the file or panel belongs to the server address and game instance that you joined.
- Check the restart: stop and start the server after saving. Editing while it is running does not guarantee that the process will reload the value.
- Check the save: reopen the panel field or file and verify that the new text is still present.
- Check the syntax: confirm the line uses
welcome_message:followed by a quoted value, with both quotation marks intact. - Check for overwrites: a hosting panel, container startup process, or deployment script may have regenerated the file from another source.
The text is rejected or shortened
Shorten the message to stay below 127 characters. Remove repeated punctuation, long rule lists, or decorative wording and keep the essential instruction. The official limit is the relevant constraint; do not assume that the 63-character lobby limits apply to the welcome message.

A panel change disappears after a restart
Return to the provider’s Server Config editor and confirm that you saved the field through the panel rather than editing a downloaded copy. If the panel has separate save and restart controls, use both in that order. Contact the provider if the saved field is reset before the server starts, because the panel may be rebuilding its configuration from a template.

A container ignores the environment variable
Verify that ETS_SERVER_WELCOME_MESSAGE is defined for the running service, not only in an unused shell or a different container. Check that the configured server_config.sii path points to the file used by the server process, then recreate or restart the service and test again.

Both approaches ultimately set the same server parameter. Choose the workflow that controls the live instance and always verify after a restart.
Related configuration: known players and moderation
The welcome greeting is separate from permissions. SCS Software noted in a 2022 official blog post that a list of “known players” in the configuration can grant listed players admin controls for moderation. Adding a welcome message does not, by itself, grant administrative rights. Treat the greeting and the known-player list as separate configuration tasks, with separate review and access decisions.
Recommended message patterns
A useful greeting fits the available space and tells a connecting driver what matters immediately. Examples below are intentionally short enough to leave room under the 127-character limit:
- Rules reminder: “Welcome drivers! Follow the posted rules and have a safe trip.”
- Community tone: “Welcome to the convoy server. Drive safely, communicate clearly, and respect other drivers.”
- Operational notice: “Welcome! Check the current route and server rules before joining the convoy.”
Use one clear sentence or two compact clauses. Put longer rules, schedules, or moderation procedures in a location players can consult separately; the server greeting is constrained and appears as a connection-time chat message.
