Change a Vintage Story server’s public listing text by editing serverconfig.json. Set the ServerName value for the short name and ServerDescription for the longer listing text. Administrators can also change both values at runtime with /serverconfig name and /serverconfig description.
For a dedicated server, stop the server before editing the file, save valid JSON, restart it, and then check the public listing. The Vintage Story Wiki’s server-configuration reference, verified for Vintage Story 1.22.0, documents the field names and the listing behavior.

What the two settings control
Vintage Story uses two different configuration values for the text prospective players see in the public server listing:

Do not use WelcomeMessage when your goal is to change the public listing. The official multiplayer guide refers to the join message as motd when it is configured through the /serverconfig command; that is distinct from the listing description.

Method 1: Edit serverconfig.json
1. Stop the server or make the edit safe
Stop a dedicated server before changing its configuration. If you cannot stop it immediately, make sure no process is writing the file while you edit it. Keep a backup of the original file so you can restore the previous values if you make a syntax mistake.
2. Find the server data directory
Open the server’s data directory and locate serverconfig.json. The exact directory depends on how the server was installed or hosted, so use the location assigned to that server rather than searching for a similarly named client file. A newly generated configuration can contain entries like this:

}ServerDescription may initially be null. Replace it with a quoted JSON string when you want text in the listing.
3. Replace the values with valid JSON strings
For example:

}The quotation marks around both values are required. If your name or description contains a quotation mark, escape it with a backslash, as in "The "Hearth" server". Keep commas, braces, and other existing configuration fields intact; changing unrelated settings is unnecessary for this task.

4. Save and restart
Save the file, start the server again, and open the public server listing. Confirm that the name and description display as intended. If the old text remains, verify that you edited the active server’s data directory and that the file was saved as serverconfig.json, not as a second file with a different extension.
Method 2: Change the values with server commands
The official Vintage Story multiplayer setup guide documents runtime commands for administrators who have console or in-game command access. This avoids hand-editing JSON.

Set the server description
/serverconfig description This is a medieval survival server, PvE only, everyone welcome! <3The text after description is the listing description. Include the complete message on the command line. The command examples in the official guide use ordinary spaces and punctuation, so you do not need to wrap the entire description in JSON-style quotes when using the command.

When the command method is preferable
- Use it when you have administrator or console access but do not have convenient file-system access.
- Use it for a quick change while the server is running, then check the public listing.
- Use file editing instead when you need to update several configuration fields together or want to preserve a carefully formatted JSON file.
The command route and the file route address the same two settings. Whichever route you use, verify the result in the listing rather than relying only on the command response or a text editor.

Writing a name that players can find
ServerName is the short, searchable label. Make it specific enough to distinguish the server from the default name without trying to put every rule in the field.
- Identify the community, world, or theme:
Ashen Valley Cooperativeis more informative thanMy Server. - Include a meaningful play-style cue when it matters, such as
PvE,Hardcore, orRoleplay. - Avoid putting the complete rule set in the name; reserve that information for
ServerDescription. - Check the spelling and capitalization in the public listing, where the name is the first piece of information a player scans.
The official reference identifies Vintage Story Server as the default example. Replacing that generic value is useful when several servers are visible to the same player.
Writing the public description
Use ServerDescription to answer the questions a prospective player has before joining. A concise description can state the community’s play style, rules, time zone, reset policy, mod expectations, and welcome information in that order.

Information worth including
- Play style: for example, relaxed survival, cooperative building, PvE, or a role-play focus.
- Community rules: mention the most important behavior expectations rather than an unreadable wall of text.
- Schedule: provide a time zone or active hours if the community has a regular play window.
- World policy: state whether resets are planned and whether the current world is intended to be long-term.
- Mods: identify whether players should expect a modded or mostly vanilla experience.
- Welcome details: tell new players whether beginners are welcome and where they can ask questions.
Use VTML for readable line breaks
The official server-configuration reference says the description supports VTML, including <br> for a line break. In JSON, write the tag as part of the quoted string:

/serverconfig description Relaxed cooperative survival. <br> PvE, beginner-friendly. <br> UTC evenings; no planned resets.The reference supports VTML but does not specify a maximum description length or prescribe a single copy format. Keep the most important information near the beginning so it remains useful even if a listing view truncates long text.

An Open to LAN server can be configured in a similar way, but it is not identical to a dedicated server. The official multiplayer guide notes that the client overrides some settings, including the save-file location. If a LAN session does not reflect an edited file, confirm which client is hosting the world and which save location that client is using.

For a dedicated server, use the dedicated server’s data directory. For Open to LAN, use the host client’s active world and apply the name or description through the available server configuration controls or commands. Do not assume that a path copied from a dedicated-server setup applies to the LAN host.

The listing still shows the default name
- Confirm that the key is spelled exactly
ServerName, including capitalization. - Check that you edited the active server’s
serverconfig.json, not a backup or another world’s file. - Save the file and restart the server after a file-based change.
- If you used a command, check that it was issued on the intended server and that your account had administrator or console access.
The description is blank
- Replace
nullwith a quoted JSON string. - Confirm that the key is exactly
ServerDescription. - Check the public listing after restarting when the value was changed in the file.
The server will not start after editing
- Restore the backup if necessary, then inspect the edited line for missing quotation marks, commas, or braces.
- Ensure embedded quotation marks in the text are escaped with a backslash.
- Keep VTML inside the JSON string; a literal unescaped quote or malformed structure can make the file invalid.
The line break does not appear as expected
- Confirm that you used the VTML form
<br>rather than a raw editor line break inside the JSON string. - Check the listing after saving and restarting the server when the value came from the file.
- Remember that the official documentation confirms VTML support but does not define a universal maximum length or every client’s rendering behavior.
An Open to LAN change affects the wrong world
Recheck the client’s active save and host settings. Open to LAN can override the save-file location, so a dedicated-server path may not control the LAN session you are viewing.
