To use a USB microphone with headphones on a Windows PC, select the microphone as the input device and the headphones as the output device. They are separate choices: connecting or selecting the microphone does not automatically route computer audio to it. If your microphone has a headphone jack, you can also plug headphones into that jack for model-dependent audio monitoring.
Set up the microphone and headphones in Windows

Connect the USB microphone to the PC.

Open Settings > System > Sound. Under Input, choose the USB microphone.

Under Output, choose the headphones you want to hear computer audio through. Windows lets you select input and output independently.

In the microphone’s Windows properties, run the microphone test. Speak normally, stop the test, then play the recorded sample. If it is too quiet, adjust the input volume and test again.

Open your calling, streaming, or recording app and check its microphone and speaker selections too. Some apps have their own device choices.
Choose where to plug in your headphones
Headphones connected to the PC
When headphones are plugged into the computer, select them under Windows Output. This is the straightforward choice for listening to the computer’s playback mix, including audio from other apps. The USB microphone remains the selected input device.

Headphones connected to the microphone
If the microphone has a headphone output, that jack may let you monitor microphone audio directly. The sound you hear, available mix, controls, and latency depend on the microphone’s design and settings. This is a different path from selecting PC-connected headphones as the Windows output; do not assume the mic’s jack will carry all computer playback.
For example, Shure describes the MV7+ as a USB-C and XLR podcast microphone with a 3.5 mm headphone jack for monitoring. Its product page says, “Monitor your audio in real-time via the 3.5mm headphone jack.” That is a manufacturer description of this model, not a guarantee about every USB microphone. Confirm the microphone works in your app
After the Windows test succeeds, make a short recording or check the app’s input meter. Speak at your normal distance and volume, then listen back. If Windows records a sample but your app receives no audio, verify the selected microphone inside the app and check that Windows and the app have permission to access the microphone.
Troubleshoot a microphone or headphone problem

No microphone input: In Settings > System > Sound, confirm the USB mic appears under Input and is selected. Run the Windows microphone test and review its playback.

The mic works in Windows but not in an app: Check the app’s microphone selection, then review Windows microphone access and the app’s permission.

No headphone playback: Confirm the intended headphones are selected under Output. Check their volume and mute state. If they are connected to the microphone, consult that model’s documentation for how its monitoring jack works.

A device is missing: Follow Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting guidance and microphone troubleshooting steps, including the applicable device and driver checks.
What to check when choosing a USB microphone
If you want to plug headphones directly into the mic, look for a USB microphone with a headphone jack and confirm that the jack is specifically intended for monitoring. Check the connector type, Windows compatibility, any required desktop software, and the model’s manual for routing and control details. A headphone jack alone does not establish that every microphone handles monitoring or PC playback the same way.
