Windows 11 does not provide one universal “replace File Explorer everywhere” switch. The supported method is to assign a third-party manager to the file extensions and link types it has registered, then test the particular workflow you care about. Start at Settings > Apps > Default apps; if the manager has its own “set as default” command, you can use that first as a convenience.
These changes affect registered associations. They do not guarantee that every Windows shell entry point, application file picker, or Open/Save dialog will use the new manager.
What “default file manager” means in Windows 11
Windows handles defaults through associations. An application registers the file extensions and link types it supports, and Windows lets you choose which registered application opens each type. Microsoft documents both directions of the process: search for a type and choose its handler, or select an application and edit the types it supports in Default apps settings.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A file extension is the ending of a file name, such as .txt or .zip. A link type is a protocol or other registered kind of link. These are separate associations, so changing one does not automatically change the others. A manager may register only the types it can open, and Windows can offer only those registered handlers.

That model is narrower than the phrase “default file manager” suggests. A manager can become the handler for supported items without taking over every place where Windows or another program opens a folder. Some software invokes File Explorer directly, and many applications implement their own Open or Save dialog. A successful association change therefore needs to be verified in the exact task you want to change.
Microsoft’s platform documentation explains that apps register as handlers for the types they support and that users change those choices through Windows’ system interface. It also says Windows protects the defaults data and does not permit silent, programmatic changes without user interaction: Windows app defaults platform.
Before changing the default
- Install the manager. Obtain it from its legitimate publisher or an approved organization source, complete setup, and open it once so it can register its supported types.
- Know the workflow you are trying to change. Opening a file by double-click, opening a web or shell link, launching a folder from the desktop, and browsing from an application’s Open dialog can follow different routes.
- Update the manager first. The available registrations and the wording of its settings can change between versions.
- Note the installed application name. The name shown in Default apps may differ slightly from the shortcut name or the name used by the publisher.
- Keep File Explorer available. Windows may still use it for surfaces the new application does not register or that another application controls.
- Plan a rollback. You can return an individual type to File Explorer, or use the reset controls shown on the Default apps page, if the new workflow is inconvenient.
No special hardware is required for this configuration. The Windows association steps are separate from any license or subscription terms set by the manager’s publisher; check that publisher’s current terms if you are selecting an app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMethod 1: Use the manager’s own “make default” option
Some third-party managers include a guided setting such as Set as default file manager, Make default, or Replace File Explorer. Open the manager, look under Settings, Preferences, General, or Integration, and follow the prompts if that control exists.
This is an app-specific convenience, not a Windows-wide promise. The exact wording, supported associations, and scope depend on the manager’s version. Windows Central’s guide to the Files app describes an in-app option for making Files the default manager; that report is dated November 14, 2023, so use the current in-app instructions if the labels differ: How to get started with the Files App on Windows 11.
An in-app command may open Windows’ confirmation interface, register several supported types, or enable integration supplied by that particular program. It does not prove that the app can handle every folder launch, every protocol, or every application dialog. Read the confirmation carefully and note which types the manager says it is changing.
After accepting the prompt, still test the actions that matter to you. An app can register file and link handlers while a particular folder shortcut, program, or dialog continues to call File Explorer.

Method 2: Change associations in Windows Settings
Windows’ supported user workflow is in Default apps. You can work from a specific extension or link type, or start from the application and edit its registered types. This is the most transparent method because each association is shown individually and requires an explicit user choice.
Change one file extension or link type
- Open Settings with
Win + I. - Select Apps, then Default apps.
- In the search box, enter the extension or link type you want to change. Examples include a document extension or a web-related protocol that the manager has registered.
- Select the result. Windows shows the current handler and the applications registered for that type.
- Choose the third-party manager, select the confirmation option, and close Settings.
- Open an item of that type from the location you normally use. Confirm that the intended manager opens and that the item behaves correctly.
If the manager is not listed, Windows has not received a registration for that type from the application, or the application does not support it. Installing or repairing the manager may restore registration; otherwise, consult that manager’s current support documentation. Do not select an unrelated application merely because it appears in the list.
Start from the application
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Search for and select the third-party manager by its installed application name.
- Review the file and link types Windows says the application can handle.
- Select each association you want to change, choose the manager when it is offered, and confirm the change.
- Test each important type rather than assuming that changing one entry changes all of them.
This route is useful when you want to see the manager’s complete registration list. It also makes the limitation clear: Windows can only assign types the application has registered. If a type is absent from the app’s list, there is no supported Settings choice that can manufacture support for it.
Changing several related types
Managers often handle more than one kind of item. For example, you might change a document extension and an archive extension separately, then discover that a protocol or another extension still opens elsewhere. Work through the list deliberately and keep a short record of the types you changed. This prevents a later troubleshooting session from confusing an unchanged association with a broken one.
Folders, desktop shortcuts, and application dialogs
Many readers are specifically trying to make a folder opened from the desktop, Start menu, or another program launch in the new manager. The Default apps page is organized around file extensions, link types, and applications; it is not documented as a universal “all folders” switch.
A folder shortcut may be handled by the Windows shell, a program may explicitly invoke File Explorer, and an Open or Save dialog may be implemented by the calling application. Consequently, a manager can be the preferred handler for its registered types while some folder launches or dialogs remain unchanged. This is normal under the association model, not necessarily a failed installation.
When a folder launch matters, test that exact shortcut rather than inferring the result from a successful file double-click. If only one program continues to show Explorer, compare it with another program. That comparison can reveal an application-owned dialog instead of a system-wide association problem.

How to verify that the change worked
- Test a representative file. Double-click a file whose extension you changed and confirm which application opens it.
- Test the shortcut you actually use. Open a folder from the desktop, Start, taskbar, or a pinned location. These routes may not follow the same association.
- Test inside a relevant application. Use its Open or Save command. If it still shows File Explorer, that application may own its dialog or invoke Explorer directly.
- Check more than one type. Changing one extension does not alter unrelated extensions or link types.
- Close and reopen the calling application. A program that was already running may retain its own dialog or process state until restarted.
- Record the result by context. Knowing which surfaces changed helps you distinguish a missing registration from an application-specific behavior.
Verification is especially important after using a manager’s one-click option. The option may have completed successfully while changing only the associations that manager currently supports. Treat each desired workflow as a separate test case.
Troubleshooting when the manager does not open
The manager is missing from the choices
Windows only offers applications that have registered themselves for the selected type. Confirm that the manager is installed for the current Windows account, launch it once, and check its integration settings. If the type still does not appear, the manager may not support it; its documentation is the authority on supported registrations.
The type is not listed at all
Search using the exact extension, including the leading period where Windows displays it, or the exact link/protocol name. A type that the manager does not register cannot be assigned to it through Default apps. Confirm that you are changing the same type used by the item you are opening; similar-looking extensions are separate associations.
The wrong application name appears
Use the installed name shown by Windows rather than a desktop shortcut label. If multiple editions or builds of a manager are installed, check which one is registered and remove or repair the duplicate only through the publisher’s supported process.
Double-clicking works, but a folder shortcut still opens File Explorer
This usually indicates that the file association changed successfully while the shortcut is being handled by a different shell route. Windows’ documented settings do not establish a guarantee that every folder launch will be redirected. Check whether the manager provides its own integration feature, and keep using the Settings associations for the types it supports.
One application still shows File Explorer in Open or Save
Open and Save interfaces can belong to the calling application rather than Windows’ general file association. Test another program to determine whether the behavior is application-specific. There is no supported setting in the documented workflow that forces every program to replace its own dialog.

The manager appears to lose the association after an update
Reopen Settings > Apps > Default apps and inspect the affected type. An application update can change its registrations or add new types. Reapply the association through Windows’ UI and check the manager’s current integration guidance. If the update repeatedly removes the choice, report the behavior to the manager’s publisher instead of applying an unsupported registry workaround.
A work or school computer blocks the change
Organizations can control defaults with policy. If Settings does not let you change an association, contact the administrator rather than attempting to bypass the restriction.
Why registry “force default” hacks are a bad idea
Windows protects default-association data to preserve user choice. Microsoft’s platform documentation says programmatic changes without user interaction are not allowed and describes registry-based changes for apps as unsupported. Avoid registry files, scripts, or utilities that claim to force a manager to become the default by editing protected settings. They can fail after updates, produce inconsistent associations, or leave the system in a state that Windows no longer recognizes.
Use the Settings interface or the manager’s own user-facing command. Those routes create an explicit user choice, which is the mechanism Windows documents. A utility promising to redirect every Explorer call cannot change the fact that an individual application may own its own file dialog.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Managed Windows 11 PCs: the administrator route
For organizational deployment, Microsoft documents the DefaultAssociationsConfiguration policy in the ApplicationDefaults Policy CSP. The policy is available for Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions. An administrator can export an association file with DISM, configure the policy through supported management tooling, and have the configured defaults applied when users sign in. See the current requirements and configuration details in Policy CSP – ApplicationDefaults, last updated March 12, 2025.
This policy is a device-management route, not a replacement for the personal-computer steps above. It is designed for administrators who need consistent associations across managed devices. Users should not attempt to create or deploy policy data themselves without authorization, and a policy can override or limit choices that would otherwise be available in Settings.
Recommended Free Tools
Policy deployment also does not turn an application’s private Open/Save dialog into a Windows-managed dialog; it configures the associations covered by the policy. Administrators should therefore test both the targeted extensions and the business applications employees use.

Choosing a third-party manager for this job
If you are comparing managers, judge the behavior you need rather than assuming that a “default” label means complete replacement. Use this checklist while testing candidates:
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which file extensions and link types does it register? | Windows can assign only the types the application supports and registers. |
| Does it offer a clear, current “make default” option? | An in-app command can simplify setup, but its scope is specific to that application and version. |
| Which folder launches does it actually handle? | Desktop, Start, pinned, and shell launches may not follow the same route as a file double-click. |
| Which applications still use File Explorer? | Programs can own their Open/Save dialogs or invoke Explorer directly. |
| Is the workflow comfortable for daily navigation? | Familiar navigation, search, tabs, previews, and keyboard behavior affect usefulness after the association is changed. |
| How easy is it to undo one association? | Clear Windows settings and a documented rollback make testing safer than a tool that promises an irreversible replacement. |
Files is one example readers may have in mind. Windows Central’s November 14, 2023 guide describes a Files setting for making the app the default manager. Treat that as a feature of the Files version described by the app and its documentation, not as evidence that every third-party manager exposes the same control or reaches every Windows surface.
Run the same verification sequence for each candidate: assign a representative type, open it from the locations you use, and check an application dialog. That gives you a realistic picture of the manager’s reach without treating one successful association as a system-wide takeover.
Quick reference
- Personal PC: Settings > Apps > Default apps, then change a type or select the app and edit its registered types.
- App-specific shortcut: use the manager’s own default-setting command when available, then verify the result.
- Missing option: the manager may not have registered or supported that file or link type.
- Folder or dialog unchanged: that surface may use a shell route or application-owned dialog outside the association you changed.
- Managed device: ask the administrator about the
DefaultAssociationsConfigurationpolicy. - Unsupported approach: do not use registry hacks or silent utilities to force defaults.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a third-party manager replace File Explorer everywhere?
Windows 11 documents defaults by file type, link type, and registered application, not one universal replacement switch. Some shell launches and application-owned dialogs may continue to use File Explorer.
Why is my manager missing from Default apps?
It may not be installed or registered for the type you selected, or it may not support that type. Launch or repair the app, check its integration settings, and consult its current support documentation.
Does changing one extension change all my files?
No. Each extension and link type is a separate association. Select the application view in Default apps to review and change the supported types individually.
Will Files automatically take over every folder?
Files has an app-specific default option described by Windows Central on November 14, 2023, but its scope depends on the app version. Verify desktop, shell, and application workflows separately.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I use a registry script to force the change?
No. Microsoft says Windows protects default-association data and registry-based changes for apps are unsupported. Use Settings or the manager’s user-facing command.
How are defaults set on company-managed PCs?
Administrators can use the DefaultAssociationsConfiguration policy on supported Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions. Configured associations apply at sign-in; contact IT if policy blocks your choice.
The Bottom Line
Install and open the manager, use its own default command if available, then confirm the desired extensions and link types under Settings > Apps > Default apps. Test files, folder shortcuts, and application dialogs separately. Windows supports explicit per-association choices, not a guaranteed replacement of File Explorer in every context, and registry-based forcing is unsupported.
