For a straightforward small-business website, shared hosting is usually the sensible tier to price first. Set your budget using the renewal rate for the billing term you expect to choose—not just a low first-term offer—and add the cost of any domain, email, backups, security, or management features the plan does not include. Upgrade only when your site’s requirements justify a higher tier.
What should you budget for website hosting?
There is no single reliable price that applies to every small-business website. Provider examples vary by tier, currency, billing commitment, and whether a displayed price is introductory or recurring. The figures below illustrate how to compare offers; they are not an industry average.
For a basic site, begin by checking shared hosting. Namecheap identifies small-business websites as a use case for its shared plans. Its live page shows a starting price of $1.88 per month billed every two years, a provider- and term-specific offer rather than a general monthly market rate. Namecheap’s shared-hosting page describes hosting as a service that stores website files on a server and makes them accessible online.

These published examples use different currencies and terms, so compare like with like before choosing. The GoDaddy figures are first-term prices from a page rendered in a European locale; the cited excerpt does not establish renewal rates. Namecheap’s renewal prices apply to invoices on or after May 19, 2026, according to its May 8, 2026 notice. Bluehost’s examples are US-dollar renewal prices in an article updated February 11, 2026. Which hosting tier fits your business?
Shared hosting for a straightforward site
Shared hosting is a practical starting point for a basic business website with ordinary needs. Compare the number of websites allowed, storage, included email and domain features, SSL, backups, and security. A lower headline price is useful only if the plan includes the services you actually need and its renewal terms fit your budget.

Managed WordPress when you want platform-specific support
Managed WordPress may bundle WordPress management or maintenance features and can cost more than a basic shared plan. Check exactly what “managed” includes: management, updates, security, storage, backups, and support are not interchangeable benefits. The GoDaddy WordPress Basic listing, for example, includes WordPress management, 10 GB NVMe storage, and SSL with no renewal fee, while the cited page excerpt does not establish its renewal price.

VPS, cloud, or dedicated hosting for specific workloads
VPS, cloud, and dedicated plans are higher service tiers, not automatic upgrades for every business expecting growth. Bluehost’s renewal article lists more expensive examples in these categories, but the available figures do not establish a universal price for each tier. Choose one when documented traffic, workload, software, or control requirements call for it.

A self-managed VPS also brings operational work and possibly software costs. For example, cPanel lists a Solo control-panel license at $29.99 per month or $27.46 per month with annual billing, excluding VAT, and says it is available on Cloud/VPS only. That is a license price, not the total hosting cost; administration and any other required tools belong in the budget too. See cPanel’s license pricing and availability.

Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Domain: Confirm whether registration is included and what renewal costs; a free first-year domain, where offered, does not establish its later price.
- Business email: Check whether usable email accounts or mailboxes are included, and whether the plan limits their number or storage.
- SSL: Verify whether SSL is included and whether it renews without a separate fee.
- Backups: Identify whether backups are included, how often they run, how long they are retained, and whether restoration costs extra.
- Security: Check what protection is bundled and whether any needed monitoring or security service renews separately.
- Management and licensing: Include paid WordPress management, control-panel licenses, and administration if your chosen setup requires them.
How to choose a sensible hosting budget
- Write down the site’s requirements. Note its platform, expected workload, number of sites, storage needs, and how much technical administration your business can handle.
- Shortlist the lowest tier that meets them. Start with shared hosting for a straightforward site; consider managed WordPress if its included management addresses a real need.
- Compare the same billing period. Put first-term and renewal prices side by side, and compare monthly, annual, and longer-term commitments without treating a long commitment’s monthly equivalent as a month-to-month price.
- Check inclusions and separate renewals. Account for the domain, email, SSL, backups, security, and any required licenses or management that are not included.
- Revisit the tier when requirements change. Move up when performance, reliability, support, workload, or software needs warrant it—not simply because a higher tier sounds more future-proof.
