To set an Unturned server icon, stop the server, open its configuration file, add a direct image URL to the Icon entry in the Browser section, save the file, and restart the server. Use a square PNG or JPG hosted at a URL that displays the image itself, not an HTML gallery page. The dedicated-server file is normally {UNTURNED}Servers(Server name)config.json.
What the Unturned server icon does
The Icon setting controls the image shown in the server information view. It is separate from the server’s Thumbnail setting, which is used for the smaller thumbnail presentation. Both settings are located in the Browser section of the server configuration.

The game expects the icon value to identify an image online. A local filename such as Icon.png is not established as a reliable method, so use a complete image URL instead. The URL should point directly to a PNG or JPG file. A page containing an image, an image-search result, or an Imgur gallery URL is not the same thing as a direct image URL.
Before changing the icon
Stop the server completely
Shut down the Unturned server before editing its files. A running server can rewrite its configuration when it closes, potentially discarding your changes. Use the stop control in your hosting panel or the server console’s normal shutdown command, then wait until the process is no longer running.

Back up the configuration
Make a copy of the existing configuration file before editing it. If a syntax mistake prevents the server from starting, you can restore the backup and then reapply the icon change carefully.
Prepare an image URL
Choose a square image that is publicly reachable. Test the URL in a private browser window: the address should load the image itself, without requiring a login or clicking through a gallery. Keep the complete URL, including the https:// scheme and file extension.
Find the Unturned server configuration file
- Stop the server and open the folder where its dedicated-server files are installed.
- Open the
Serversdirectory. - Open the folder named for your server. If you run several servers, make sure you select the correct server name.
- Open
config.jsonin a plain-text or code editor. Do not use a word processor that can add formatting.
The standard dedicated-server location is {UNTURNED}Servers(Server name)config.json. The {UNTURNED} portion represents your Unturned installation directory, and (Server name) represents the folder for that particular server.
Add the icon URL in the Browser section
Search the file for Browser. The exact capitalization of configuration keys matters. Inside that object, locate Icon. If it already has a value, replace only the value between the quotation marks. If the key is missing, add it alongside the other browser settings while preserving valid JSON punctuation.

A direct image URL normally ends in .png or .jpg and returns an image when opened by itself. Hosting guides commonly show this format, for example https://i.imgur.com/5Ysvo4Y.png. If you use Imgur, change a gallery-style address beginning with imgur.com to the image host form beginning with i.imgur.com, and make sure the final address identifies the image file.
Before saving the configuration, paste the URL into a browser. If you see a web page, an album, a sign-in prompt, or an error instead of the image, obtain a different direct URL. A server may be unable to retrieve an image that is private, protected by a browser challenge, or served only after client-side scripts run.

Icon and thumbnail: use the right setting
Icon
Icon is the image associated with the server information menu. Set it to the direct URL of the image you want players to see when they inspect server details.
Thumbnail
Thumbnail is the neighboring setting for the smaller thumbnail representation. Changing Icon does not automatically change Thumbnail. If you want consistent branding in both places, provide a valid URL for each key. You may use the same square image for both, although separate files let you prepare a smaller asset specifically for the thumbnail.

Why players may see one image but not the other
Because the fields are independent, a correctly configured icon can appear while the thumbnail remains blank, or the reverse. Check both values, their spelling, their commas, and whether each URL opens directly to an image.
Image dimensions and file-size guidance
Published guidance does not agree on one mandatory pixel size. The official Unturned Wiki describes 64 × 64 pixels as the ideal icon size and 32 × 32 pixels as the ideal thumbnail size. Two hosting guides instead recommend a 500 × 500 image, and another recommends a square image ideally below 512 KB. These are recommendations from different sources, not a single confirmed acceptance rule.

A practical compromise is a square PNG. If you are following the official wiki’s compact guidance, prepare 64 × 64 for the icon and 32 × 32 for the thumbnail. If your host’s control panel or documentation specifically requests 500 × 500, follow that host-specific recommendation instead. Keeping the file small and square reduces the chance of slow loading, cropping, or distortion.
PNG or JPG?
PNG is a good choice for logos, text, and transparent backgrounds. JPG can be appropriate for photographic artwork and may produce a smaller file. The important points supported by the available guidance are that the image should be square, reachable through a direct URL, and identified as a PNG or JPG resource.
Save the file without breaking JSON
JSON is strict about quotation marks, commas, braces, and colons. Use ordinary double quotation marks around keys and string values. Do not add comments inside config.json, and do not leave a trailing comma after the final property in an object.

Restart and verify the new icon
- Close the editor and confirm the configuration was saved.
- Start the Unturned server from your host panel or normal launch method.
- Wait for the server to finish loading and become visible to players.
- Open the server information view and check the icon.
- If you also edited
Thumbnail, check the server-browser view where thumbnails are displayed.
Hosting instructions consistently require a restart before the new image appears. If the old image remains immediately after restarting, allow for client-side caching and then reconnect or refresh the server list. Verify the URL independently before changing more settings.
If your server has Config.txt instead of config.json
Most dedicated-server instructions identify config.json in the server’s Servers folder. One host document reports that an update labeled 3.25.8.0 introduced Config.txt as a replacement in some installations. That report is not corroborated by the other available sources, so treat the filename as version- or host-dependent rather than assuming every server uses it.
If the folder for your server contains Config.txt and no usable config.json, open the existing configuration format and look for the same Browser, Icon, and Thumbnail entries. Do not create a second configuration file merely to add an icon. Follow the format already used by your installation and keep a backup before editing.
Troubleshooting an icon that does not appear

Common mistakes to avoid
- Editing while the server is running: the game may overwrite your change during shutdown.
- Using an Imgur gallery address: use the direct image-host form and confirm that the URL ends in an image extension.
- Putting the key in the wrong object:
Iconbelongs inBrowser. - Changing the key’s capitalization: use
IconandThumbnailexactly. - Deleting nearby settings: modify only the required value and preserve the rest of the configuration.
- Assuming a local file is supported: the documented and repeatedly demonstrated method is a URL, not an unverified local path.
- Using a non-square design: square artwork is the safest choice across the differing size recommendations.
- Forgetting the restart: the file change is not applied to the running server until it starts again.
Changing or removing an existing icon
Changing it
Stop the server, replace the existing Icon URL with the new direct image URL, save the file, and restart. If the thumbnail should change too, update Thumbnail in the same maintenance window.

Removing it
Back up the file, stop the server, and remove the Icon value only if your configuration format allows an empty or absent field. Because behavior for an empty value is not established by the available guidance, the safer approach is to restore the previous known-good configuration if removing the image causes a startup or display problem.
