Change Android’s default browser in Settings > Apps > Default apps (sometimes Choose default apps) > Browser app, then select the browser you want. After that, links tapped in other apps should use the selected browser. Menu names can differ by phone manufacturer, so use the Settings search box for “Default apps” or “Browser app” if the labels do not match.
What changing the default browser actually does
Android uses a default browser choice to decide which installed browser should handle ordinary web links. When you tap a link in an app, Android passes that link to the browser selected under Browser app. Google describes the purpose this way: “To automatically open any links that you tap in your browser, set the browser that you use as your default browser.”
This setting does not install a browser, move bookmarks, copy passwords, or change every web view on the phone. It establishes the system-level preference for links that Android sends to a browser. An app can still show a page inside its own built-in web view, and a browser can have separate settings that affect what happens after it opens.
Before you begin
- Install the browser you want to use. It must be present on the phone before it can appear in the Browser app list.
- Check that it is enabled. A disabled or unavailable app may not be offered as a choice.
- Know which behavior you want to change. Android’s default browser controls which app receives links; it does not automatically change the search engine inside a particular browser.
- Expect slightly different wording. Android manufacturers can change the Settings layout and labels. The generic Google path is the baseline, not a guarantee that every phone displays identical screens.
You do not need a cable, computer, accessory, or repair utility. The change is made entirely in Android’s Settings app.

Set a different default browser from Android Settings
- Open Settings. Find and launch the phone’s Android Settings app. You can usually open it from the app drawer or the gear icon in Quick Settings.
- Open Apps. Scroll to Apps and tap it. On some devices, this section may be labeled Apps & notifications or have a similar manufacturer-specific name.
- Open the default-app controls. Under the general app controls, tap Default apps or Choose default apps. The exact placement of this item varies with the phone’s software.
- Choose Browser app. Tap Browser app to see browsers that Android recognizes as available for web links.
- Select the browser. Tap the browser you want. Android records that selection as the system’s default browser.
Once the selection is saved, return to an app containing a normal web link and tap it to check the result. If the link opens in the browser you selected, the system preference is working.
If your Settings labels do not match
There is no single menu design for every Android phone. Manufacturers can rename categories, move the default-app controls, or place them behind an additional menu. Do not assume a route written for one model applies to another.

Open the result that leads to the browser selection screen, then choose the installed browser. Searching is a navigation aid when labels differ; it is not a separate browser-setting procedure.
If search returns no result, browse through Apps and look for a default-apps or app-association section. The generic path remains Settings > Apps > Default apps (or Choose default apps) > Browser app, even when a manufacturer inserts an extra screen.

How to verify that Android changed the default
Use a link that should be handled by the system rather than a page that an app deliberately keeps inside itself. For example, tap a web link in a messaging, notes, or email app that normally hands the address to Android. The selected browser should launch and load the address.
Verification should answer two separate questions:

A failed test does not automatically mean the browser setting was ignored. First determine whether the app opened an in-app page instead of sending the link to the system browser.

Why a link may still appear to open in Google
Several different settings and viewing modes are easy to confuse. “Google” can refer to the Google app, a browser made by Google, or a search page. They are not interchangeable settings.
The Google app can display pages inside the app
The Google app may show a search-result page in an in-app view. A page displayed this way is not a reliable test of the Android Browser app selection because the Google app is controlling the viewing surface. Google documents an Open in browser or Open in Chrome action for an individual page. Use that action when you need to move the current page out of the in-app view.
If links from the Google app do not behave like links from another app, check whether the page is still inside Google’s interface. Use the page’s open-in-browser command, then test the default with a link from an app that hands links to Android.

Chrome’s search engine is a separate preference
Changing Android’s Browser app does not change the search engine configured inside Chrome. Google’s instructions place Chrome’s search-engine control in Chrome itself under Settings > Basics > Search engine.

These controls can produce different results without contradicting one another. Selecting another Android browser does not rewrite Chrome’s search preference, and changing Chrome’s search engine does not select a different Android browser.
Troubleshoot a browser that is missing from the list
Confirm that the browser is installed
Open the app drawer and look for the browser. If it is not installed, install it first, then return to Browser app. Android can only offer an app that is available on the device.
Check whether the browser is disabled
An installed app that has been disabled may not be treated as available for selection. Open Settings > Apps, find the browser, and check whether the app page offers an enable action. If you enable it, return to Default apps and review the Browser app list again.
Android versions and manufacturers handle unavailable or disabled apps differently. The general Android guidance does not define an identical recovery sequence for every model, so the presence and wording of an enable control can vary.

Reopen the Browser app screen
After installing or enabling a browser, leave the default-app screen and open it again. This refreshes the list in the normal Settings flow. If the browser still does not appear, verify that you installed the intended app rather than a similarly named utility, and consult that device’s Android help for model-specific behavior.
Make sure you are changing the system setting
A browser’s own settings may offer choices for search, home pages, or link handling, but those controls are not the same as Android’s Browser app selector. Return to the Android Settings app and make the selection there.

Check the selected browser again
Open Settings > Apps > Default apps (or Choose default apps) > Browser app. If the old browser is still selected, tap the browser you want and test again.
Use a link from a different app
One app may keep pages inside its own interface while another sends links to Android. Test a regular web link in a second app. If the second app opens the selected browser, the original app’s in-app behavior—not the Android default—is the likely explanation.
Leave an in-app page explicitly
When a page is open inside the Google app, use Open in browser or Open in Chrome for that page. This command is an explicit, one-page action and should not be confused with changing the system default.

Distinguish a browser window from a search result
A search result can appear in Google’s interface before any browser is involved. The fact that a page began in a Google search does not identify which browser Android will use for a separately opened link. Confirm the app’s interface and use a direct link test.
Choosing which browser to make the default
Android does not require a particular browser for the setting. Choose an installed browser that fits how you use the phone. Useful questions include:
- Account and device sync: Does the browser provide the bookmark, history, tab, or password workflow you already use?
- Privacy controls: Are its tracking, permissions, and data controls understandable to you?
- Accessibility: Does it work well with your preferred text size, screen reader, zoom, or other accessibility settings?
- Compatibility: Do the sites and web applications you rely on behave correctly in it?
- Convenience: Can you find tabs, downloads, sharing, and page controls where you expect them?
The Android setting only selects the handler for links. It does not declare one browser universally best, and the choice can be changed later by repeating the same steps.
Changing the default again
To switch browsers in the future, repeat the procedure:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Default apps or Choose default apps.
- Tap Browser app.
- Select the new browser.
The next system-handled link should use the newly selected browser. If a particular app continues to display pages internally, use that app’s own open-in-browser command or test with another app.

What to remember
The reliable Android-level route is Settings > Apps > Default apps (or Choose default apps) > Browser app. Select the installed browser you want, then verify it with a link from an app that uses the system browser. If a page still appears in Google, determine whether it is an in-app page or a Chrome search setting before changing anything else. Manufacturer software can alter labels and placement, but the purpose of the Browser app setting remains the same: it chooses the browser Android uses for links that Android sends to a browser.
