To set a fixed 120 Hz refresh rate, open Windows display settings, select the correct monitor, and choose 120 Hz under the refresh-rate control. In Windows 11 the path is Start > Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. In Windows 10 it is Start > Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings. If 120 Hz is not listed, the limit is usually the monitor’s supported mode at the selected resolution, the display selected in Windows, the PC’s graphics output, a dock or adapter, the cable, or the graphics driver.

What 120 Hz means

Refresh rate is how many times the display updates its image each second. A 60 Hz display updates 60 times per second; a 120 Hz setting doubles that update frequency. Higher refresh rates can make pointer movement, scrolling, animation and supported games appear smoother, but Windows can offer 120 Hz only when the complete display path supports that mode.

The relevant path includes the monitor, its current resolution, the computer or GPU output, the physical port, any dock or adapter, the cable and the graphics driver. A monitor may support 120 Hz at one resolution but not another. Likewise, a port or adapter can become the limiting component even when the monitor and graphics processor are capable of 120 Hz.

Set 120 Hz in Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System > Display.
  3. Open Advanced display.
  4. If more than one display is connected, use the display selector and choose the monitor you want to configure.
  5. Find Choose a refresh rate and select 120 Hz.

The information panel on the Advanced display page shows the selected display’s current resolution and refresh rate. It also indicates whether the display supports variable refresh rate (VRR). After you choose 120 Hz, Windows normally applies the mode immediately. If the screen goes blank temporarily, wait for the confirmation prompt and keep the setting only if the image remains stable.

If 120 Hz is absent, do not assume that Windows is malfunctioning. The list is generated from modes Windows detects as available for that monitor and connection. Continue with the checks below before changing hardware.

Set 120 Hz in Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System > Display.
  3. Open Advanced display settings.
  4. When several displays are attached, select the intended monitor from the display selector.
  5. Under Refresh rate, choose 120 Hz if it appears.

Windows 10 does not include Windows 11’s Dynamic Refresh Rate feature. You can still select a fixed refresh rate when the monitor and connection expose that mode.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance and security fixes are no longer provided. The refresh-rate steps above describe the controls in Windows 10, but an unsupported operating system should be considered separately when planning driver or hardware troubleshooting.

Understand the refresh-rate list before troubleshooting

The selected display matters

Refresh-rate settings are per display. On a laptop with an external monitor, a desktop with two monitors or a docked computer, changing the value for one display does not change the others. Always confirm the display selector identifies the physical screen you are looking at.

Resolution can remove 120 Hz

Windows may show a refresh rate only at particular resolutions. Microsoft marks a rate with an asterisk when it is not supported at the current resolution. Selecting that marked rate changes the resolution along with the refresh rate. This is not equivalent to 120 Hz at your preferred resolution.

Check the monitor’s specifications for the exact combination you need, such as 120 Hz at 1920×1080, 2560×1440 or 3840×2160. A display’s maximum refresh rate headline does not guarantee that every resolution reaches that maximum.

Availability is configuration-specific

Microsoft Support explains that the refresh rates shown depend on the display and what it supports. In practice, Windows is reporting the modes available through the detected combination of display, resolution, graphics output and connection path. A different cable or driver helps only when that component is actually preventing the desired mode from being detected.

Why the 120 Hz option is missing

Use the following order. It starts with checks that cost nothing and isolate the most common causes before you buy an accessory or replace equipment.

1. Confirm that you changed the intended monitor

Return to Advanced display or Advanced display settings and inspect the display selector. If Windows is configuring the laptop panel or a different external monitor, its available rates may not include 120 Hz. Select the physical monitor you want to run at 120 Hz and read its displayed resolution and current refresh rate.

2. Verify 120 Hz at the current resolution

Consult the monitor’s manual or manufacturer specification page and find the supported refresh rates for the exact resolution currently selected in Windows. If the specification lists 120 Hz only at a lower resolution, you must choose that resolution before 120 Hz can appear as a normal option. An asterisk beside 120 Hz means Windows can offer the rate only by changing the current resolution.

Also check whether the monitor has an on-screen display setting that limits its input mode. The Windows list cannot expose a mode the monitor does not report through the connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Remove docks, adapters and other intermediaries

For an external monitor, temporarily connect the display directly to the computer if the computer has a compatible output. Disconnect a dock, dongle, converter, KVM switch or other accessory from the signal path. Microsoft’s external-monitor guidance recommends isolating accessories because each additional device can impose its own resolution and bandwidth limit.

Secure both ends of the cable. Then try another output on the computer and another input on the monitor when those ports support the same signal type. If possible, connect the monitor to another computer. These tests help distinguish a monitor limitation from a computer, port, adapter or driver problem.

4. Match the cable to the complete signal

Higher resolution and higher refresh rate require more signal bandwidth. Intel’s guidance for a monitor stuck at a lower-than-expected high refresh rate specifically calls for checking the display cables and notes that older HDMI cables may not support the required bandwidth. Cable capability depends on the signal, resolution, refresh rate, port standards and any adapter in the path; there is no single cable rule for every 120 Hz setup.

Dell’s HDMI guide gives a specific example: an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is called for for 4K at 120 Hz on supported equipment. Treat that as guidance for the 4K-at-120-Hz combination, not as a universal requirement for every monitor running 120 Hz at a lower resolution.

Replace a cable only after checking the monitor, GPU, ports and resolution. A new cable cannot make a monitor or output port support a mode outside its specifications.

5. Check the graphics driver

A driver can prevent Windows from exposing a mode that the hardware and display should support. Microsoft lists uninstalling and reinstalling the display-adapter driver among external-monitor troubleshooting steps. Intel recommends a clean graphics-driver installation in its case for a 144 Hz monitor stuck at 120 Hz.

  1. First check the computer manufacturer’s driver guidance, especially on laptops and compact PCs where a customized package may be required.
  2. If the manufacturer’s instructions permit it, remove the current display-adapter driver using Windows’ device-management tools.
  3. Restart the computer and install the recommended graphics driver.
  4. Return to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display in Windows 11, or Advanced display settings in Windows 10, and check the mode list again.

A clean installation is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee. If the monitor, port or adapter cannot carry 120 Hz at the selected resolution, reinstalling a driver will not create that capability.

6. Compare the complete hardware specification

When the option remains missing, compare these five items as one chain:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The monitor’s maximum refresh rate at the desired resolution.
  • The computer or GPU’s supported output modes.
  • The output and input port standards.
  • The cable and any dock, adapter or converter between the devices.
  • The graphics-driver version and installation status.

If one specification falls short, Windows is behaving as designed by omitting the unsupported combination. Contact the relevant manufacturer with the exact monitor model, computer or GPU model, resolution, port type, cable arrangement and driver version when the specifications appear to conflict.

External-monitor isolation procedure

This short procedure is useful when the option disappears after docking, moving a cable or changing computers.

  3. Select the monitor in Windows’ display selector.
  4. Set a resolution that the monitor specification explicitly pairs with 120 Hz.
  5. Check the refresh-rate list.
  6. If 120 Hz is now available, reconnect one accessory at a time until the limiting device is identified.
  7. If it is still unavailable, try another cable, another compatible port and another computer.
  8. Install or reinstall the graphics driver according to the computer manufacturer’s instructions, then test again.

This sequence does not prove that any one component is defective, but it narrows the signal path until the restriction is reproducible.

Fixed 120 Hz versus Dynamic Refresh Rate

A fixed 120 Hz selection and Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) are different controls. Choosing 120 Hz tells Windows to use that refresh rate continuously when the mode is supported. DRR automatically changes the refresh rate according to activity to balance responsiveness and power use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft says Windows 11 DRR requires a display with VRR support and a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz. The requirement is in addition to the normal display and connection requirements. Windows 10 does not support DRR.

When DRR can affect games

Microsoft cautions that DRR may limit the maximum refresh rate of some games that are not designed for VRR. If a game appears to run at a lower rate after DRR is enabled, Microsoft’s suggested mitigation is to disable DRR and test again. A reader who wants a fixed 120 Hz mode should select 120 Hz in Advanced display rather than treating the DRR switch as a substitute for that setting.

Choosing the right troubleshooting branch

What you observe Most useful next check Reason
120 Hz appears only with an asterisk Check the resolution paired with 120 Hz in the monitor specification. Windows indicates that selecting the rate will change the current resolution.
120 Hz appears for one monitor but not another Use the display selector and compare each monitor’s supported modes. Refresh-rate choices are per display.
120 Hz disappears when using a dock or adapter Test a direct connection, then reconnect accessories one at a time. The dock or adapter may impose a different output limit.
The monitor works at 120 Hz on another computer Check the original computer’s port, GPU output and driver. The monitor and cable are less likely to be the limiting components.
Changing cables makes no difference Verify the monitor’s resolution-specific limit and the computer output capability. A cable change helps only when the original cable was the bottleneck.
A high-refresh monitor is detected at a lower rate after a driver change Reinstall the recommended graphics driver and retest the direct connection. Driver state and connection path can affect the modes Windows exposes.

Common mistakes that prevent 120 Hz

  • Changing the wrong display: the selected monitor in Advanced display is not the screen you intended to configure.
  • Confusing asterisk-marked modes with native modes: the rate may be available only by changing resolution.
  • Assuming a monitor’s maximum applies at every resolution: specifications often define separate limits for separate resolutions.
  • Buying a cable before checking the signal: cable requirements depend on resolution, refresh rate, ports, GPU and adapters.
  • Leaving a dock in the path during testing: an accessory can hide the capability of a direct connection.
  • Installing a generic driver without checking the PC maker: laptops and integrated systems may require a customized package.
  • Confusing DRR with fixed 120 Hz: DRR is an automatic VRR-based behavior, not the same as selecting a constant rate.

What to record before asking for support

Gather precise details so a manufacturer can reproduce the configuration:

  • Monitor model and the resolution at which you want 120 Hz.
  • Computer model and, where applicable, GPU model.
  • Monitor input and computer output port types.
  • Every dock, adapter, converter or switch between the computer and monitor.
  • Cable type and whether another cable or port was tested.
  • Windows edition and version, plus the graphics-driver version.
  • Exactly where 120 Hz disappears: Windows 11 Advanced display, Windows 10 Advanced display settings, or after an accessory is connected.

These details separate a settings problem from a specification limit and prevent repeated tests that cannot change the available mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When hardware replacement is the only route

If the monitor specification excludes 120 Hz at the required resolution, or the computer’s output, port or adapter cannot carry that combination, software changes cannot add the missing mode. The practical options are to use a supported lower resolution, select the highest supported refresh rate, remove the limiting intermediary, or replace the component whose specification is insufficient. Make that decision only after direct-connection and driver checks establish which component is limiting the signal.
