You can generate a static SVG map on a server without adopting a full map renderer, but geographic coordinates must still be projected onto a two-dimensional canvas. For custom SVG markup, use a projection and path-generation tool such as D3 Geo, or convert GeoJSON with the geo2svg command-line utility. If “no map library” means no geographic library at all, you must implement projection and path construction yourself; longitude and latitude are not screen coordinates.

What “no map library” means for server-rendered SVG

A static SVG map does not need a browser map viewer, tile system, camera controls, or interactive style engine. It does need a way to convert geographic shapes into planar drawing paths. That distinction is the practical one: a projection and path generator is much narrower than a full mapping framework, but it still handles essential geographic geometry.

GeoJSON coordinates are geographic positions, not pixels. A map projection transforms them into coordinates in the SVG’s drawing space, and path generation turns the transformed geometry into SVG path data. D3 Geo provides both projection and path-generation functionality for GeoJSON. D3 Geo documentation

Generate an SVG map from GeoJSON

1. Choose the geographic features

Start with GeoJSON containing the features you want to draw, such as country boundaries, administrative areas, or points. The data’s coordinate reference and geometry conventions affect how it should be interpreted. Keep only the features needed for the map, particularly when output size or rendering time matters.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Choose a projection for the area and purpose

Configure a projection to fit the geography and the intended view. A projection determines how the curved Earth is represented on a plane, so it affects shape, area, and position. There is no single projection that is equally suitable for every region or use case; select one suited to the map rather than treating longitude and latitude as direct x/y values.

3. Convert geometries into SVG paths

With D3 Geo, use a projection and a geographic path generator to produce SVG path data from GeoJSON. This lets the server generate the map’s vector paths without running a full interactive map renderer. Add the resulting paths inside an <svg> element and serialize the document for your application to return or save.

If a command-line conversion fits your workflow, geo2svg accepts GeoJSON and can emit one path for the input or, when given newline-delimited input, a path element for each feature. Its options include width, height, precision, and point radius; feature properties can be used for styling. See the geo2svg command-line reference.

4. Add presentation and return the SVG

Set the SVG dimensions and style paths with attributes such as fill and stroke. For feature-specific styling, use properties associated with the corresponding GeoJSON features to decide which attributes to emit. Once assembled, return the serialized SVG from the server or store it as a static asset. The output remains vector markup that can be styled or edited as SVG, rather than a rendered map image.

Handle geographic edge cases before shipping

Antimeridian crossings

World maps and data spanning the 180-degree meridian can be affected by antimeridian cuts. D3 Geo’s documentation notes that WGS84 GeoJSON may need stitching to handle these cuts. Check the output around the dateline rather than assuming every feature will project as an uninterrupted outline. D3 Geo projection and geometry notes

Polygon winding order and holes

Inspect polygon orientation and holes when converting data between GeoJSON and D3 Geo. D3 Geo documents a winding-order convention that differs from GeoJSON RFC 7946. A mismatch can change how polygon interiors are interpreted, so validate filled polygons and holes in the generated SVG, especially when data comes from another conversion pipeline. Projection fit and output bounds

Verify that the chosen projection and dimensions place all intended features inside the SVG viewport. A projection can distort or clip areas in ways that are unsuitable for a particular map; the result should be checked at the actual width and height you plan to serve.

What if you mean no geographic library whatsoever?

Then your server must perform the work a projection and path generator would otherwise provide: transform each geographic coordinate with a chosen projection, construct SVG path commands for points, lines, and polygons, and account for geometry details such as polygon holes and antimeridian crossings. Simply writing longitude and latitude into SVG coordinates will not create a correct map. This can be appropriate for a tightly constrained format or specialized projection, but it shifts geographic correctness and edge-case handling into your own code.

When a full renderer is the better choice

If the requirement includes interactive navigation, tiled data, camera movement, or a full map-style system, static SVG path generation solves a different problem. MapLibre GL JS is documented as a TypeScript library that uses WebGL to render interactive maps from vector tiles in a browser; its standard browser renderer is not evidence of server-generated SVG output. MapLibre GL JS documentation

Martin can render MapLibre styles server-side, but its rendering documentation describes deployment constraints: rendering is not included in the default build, depends on maplibre_native, and is supported on Linux. The documentation also describes full Docker and Linux release options or building with the rendering feature enabled, and notes that static rendering is without caching. Check the current Martin rendering documentation when planning deployment, since these implementation details can change.
