Use DocumentRoot when the subdirectory is physically inside the virtual host’s site tree. Use Alias when the URL path should point to a directory elsewhere on disk, and add a matching <Directory> block to authorize that target. The distinction determines how Apache maps /app/ to a filesystem path, which permissions apply, and where to look when a request returns 403 or 404.
Choose the mapping that matches your filesystem
Apache has two supported ways to serve a URL subdirectory. For a conventional site layout, place the directory below the virtual host’s DocumentRoot. Apache appends the requested URL path to that root unless another directive, such as Alias, overrides the mapping. If the application directory is stored somewhere else, map the public URL to it with Alias.

The Apache documentation describes Alias as allowing documents to be stored in the local filesystem other than under DocumentRoot. In either design, the URL path and the filesystem path are separate concerns: the first identifies the request, while the second identifies the file Apache may read.
Questions to answer before editing
- Is the directory really inside the selected virtual host’s document tree, or is it mounted under another path?
- Should the public URL mirror the physical directory name, or must
/app/remain stable while files move? - Which virtual host owns the hostname and listening address?
- Does the directory need
.htaccessoverrides, or should they be disabled? - Which index filename should Apache try when a request names the directory itself?
Answering these questions prevents the common mistake of adding an alias for a directory that would be simpler and clearer below DocumentRoot, or changing DocumentRoot when only one URL prefix needs a different target.

Make sure the request reaches the intended VirtualHost
A correct mapping in the wrong virtual host behaves like a missing mapping. For name-based virtual hosts, Apache first selects candidates by listening address and port, then compares the request hostname with ServerName and ServerAlias. If no hostname matches, the first virtual host for that address and port becomes the default.
Use an explicit hostname
Put an explicit ServerName in every name-based virtual host. If you use additional hostnames, list them with ServerAlias. The hostname in the browser must resolve to this server; creating a <VirtualHost> block does not create a DNS record.

Check address, port, and ordering
Confirm that the block listens on the address and port receiving the request, commonly *:80 for HTTP. When several virtual hosts share that address and port, verify their order and hostname declarations. A request with an unexpected or missing Host match can land in the first block instead of the one containing your subdirectory configuration.
Separate DNS from Apache configuration
Test name resolution independently from Apache. A hostname can resolve to an old server even when the new virtual-host file is syntactically correct. Conversely, a correct DNS record cannot make a request use a virtual host whose address, port, or hostname declarations do not match. Treat these as separate checkpoints.
Pattern A: serve a directory below DocumentRoot
Choose this pattern when the directory is part of the site’s normal tree. With DocumentRoot /srv/www/example, a request for /app/index.html resolves to /srv/www/example/app/index.html unless an alias or another mapping changes it.
1. Create the directory layout
For example, place the application’s public files like this:

2. Configure the virtual host

3. Understand directory requests
When the request names a directory, such as /app/, Apache looks for a file listed by the configured DirectoryIndex directive. If an index file exists, Apache serves it. If no configured index is available, the result depends on the server’s directory-listing settings; it may be forbidden rather than displaying a listing.
When changing DocumentRoot is the wrong fix
Changing the root to /srv/www/example/app would make / point at the application directory, not merely make /app/ available. That can hide the rest of the site and alter every relative URL. Keep the parent as DocumentRoot when the application is one section of a larger site.
Pattern B: map a URL subdirectory with Alias
Use Alias when the public URL should remain /app/ but the files are stored outside DocumentRoot. The alias belongs inside the virtual host that should receive the request, and its destination needs a matching filesystem authorization block.
1. Store the application outside the document tree
/srv/apps/myapp/
└── index.htmlThis directory is independent of /srv/www/example. It can be maintained, deployed, or mounted separately while retaining the public URL used by clients.
2. Add the Alias and Directory sections
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName example.com
DocumentRoot /srv/www/example
Alias /app/ /srv/apps/myapp/
<Directory /srv/apps/myapp/>

</VirtualHost>A request for /app/index.html is mapped to /srv/apps/myapp/index.html. The <Directory> path is a filesystem path, not a URL path, so it must match the alias destination exactly (including the appropriate trailing slash convention).
3. Keep trailing slashes consistent
In this example, the URL-path part of the alias ends with /. Apache’s documented matching rule requires the requested URL to include that trailing slash for the slash-terminated alias to match. Test both /app and /app/; do not assume they are interchangeable. Requests for files below the directory, such as /app/index.html, should then be tested separately.

4. Restrict the target deliberately
Grant access only to the aliased directory, not to a broad parent such as /srv. Keep any authentication, IP restrictions, or other site-specific controls in the relevant directory or virtual-host policy. AllowOverride None prevents an unexpected .htaccess file in the external tree from changing behavior, while Options FollowSymLinks permits the symlink behavior specified for this example; enable only options the application requires.

How Apache resolves the URL
For a normal request, Apache takes the path portion of the URL and appends it to the selected virtual host’s DocumentRoot. Thus, with a root of /srv/www/example, /app/index.html becomes /srv/www/example/app/index.html. An Alias changes that rule for matching URL prefixes: the matched URL prefix is replaced by the alias destination, and the remainder of the URL is appended to that destination.
Aliases are evaluated in configuration order, and the first matching alias takes precedence. Put a more specific alias before a broader one. For example, if one rule handles /app/ and another handles a parent path that could also match it, the specific rule must appear first or requests may be sent to the wrong directory.

URL prefix and filesystem target are not interchangeable
Alias /app/ /srv/apps/myapp/ contains two different namespaces. The first value is compared with the request URL; the second is looked up on the local filesystem. Writing a URL in the <Directory> block, or writing a filesystem path in the alias’s URL position, produces a configuration that does not express the intended mapping.
The remainder of the request is preserved. Therefore, /app/css/site.css resolves below the alias destination as /srv/apps/myapp/css/site.css. A known-file test is useful because it verifies both the prefix replacement and the appended remainder.
DocumentRoot versus Alias in day-to-day operation
DocumentRoot is usually easier to understand, copy, and troubleshoot when the public URL structure follows the directory structure. Its access policy can cover the whole site tree, and moving the site generally means moving one directory.
Alias adds an intentional indirection. It is useful when deployments, mounts, or application ownership require files outside the document tree, or when the public URL must remain /app/ despite a different physical location. That flexibility also creates another configuration boundary: the alias must be in the selected virtual host, its destination needs its own <Directory> policy, and alias order can affect the result.

Filesystem permissions and 403 responses
Apache needs more than a readable file. The account running Apache must be able to traverse every parent directory in the path and read the requested file. A missing execute (traverse) permission on any parent can produce 403 Forbidden even when the file itself is world-readable.
- Check read permission on the requested file and execute permission on each parent directory.
- Check the
<Directory>block that covers the effective filesystem path, especially for an alias outsideDocumentRoot. - Confirm that authorization rules do not impose a higher-level restriction than
Require all granted. - Keep the permitted path as narrow as possible; do not solve a 403 by granting an unrelated filesystem parent.
An alias does not bypass filesystem permissions or Apache authorization. Both layers must allow the request.

Why an apparently correct Alias can still be forbidden
The alias may resolve to the expected path while the parent directory remains inaccessible to the Apache account. The destination may also be covered by a different or more restrictive directory rule than the one you edited. Compare the effective path with the exact <Directory> section, then inspect each parent directory’s traverse permission. Do not broaden authorization until you know which layer denied the request.
Directory indexes and listings
/app/ is a directory request, not a request for a particular file. Apache checks the configured DirectoryIndex names in that resolved directory. If none exists, directory-listing settings determine whether a listing is generated or access is denied. A successful response for /app/index.html therefore does not by itself prove that /app/ will display the expected page.

Validate the configuration before testing in a browser
- Run
apachectl configtest. On installations that use thehttpdbinary directly, the equivalent ishttpd -t. Fix any syntax error before reloading Apache. - Inspect parsed virtual hosts with
apachectl -S. On Windows, usehttpd.exe -S. This output shows how Apache interpreted the address, port, hostnames, and configuration order. - Confirm DNS separately. Resolve the hostname and verify that it reaches the server whose configuration you edited.
- Request
/appand/app/, particularly when the alias URL ends in a slash. - Request a known file such as
/app/index.html. A known file distinguishes URL mapping problems from missing-directory-index behavior. - Inspect the access and error logs for the same request. The status code, selected host, and filesystem-related error usually identify the failing layer.
- Verify the effective filesystem path and permissions for every parent directory, not just the final file.
Run the checks against the hostname users actually request. Testing a server by address can select a different virtual host when hostname matching is involved, so a successful response from one host value does not prove that the intended name-based vhost is correct.
Troubleshoot common failures

Rewrites, .htaccess, and aliases
Resolve the virtual host and URL-to-filesystem mapping first, then investigate rewrites. A rewrite rule in the selected virtual host or an allowed .htaccess file can change the request after the initial mapping and make a correct alias appear broken. In the external-directory example, AllowOverride None removes .htaccess as a source of changes for that directory; in the document-root example, AllowOverride All intentionally allows it.
Keep the responsibilities distinct: DocumentRoot establishes the default URL-to-path relationship, Alias creates an exception for a URL prefix, <Directory> controls access to the resulting filesystem path, and rewrite directives can subsequently alter request handling.
Choose AllowOverride intentionally
AllowOverride All is convenient when an application supplies its own .htaccess, but it also permits per-directory files to affect requests throughout that tree. AllowOverride None makes the external example predictable by keeping those files from changing behavior. Select the setting based on the application’s requirement, not as a generic fix for a 404 or 403.
Deployment checklist
- Decide whether the physical directory is inside or outside
DocumentRoot. - Declare the intended

For a subdirectory that naturally belongs to the site tree, DocumentRoot is the simpler and more portable choice. When the public URL must point to files stored elsewhere, use Alias with a narrowly scoped, matching <Directory> block and validate the virtual-host selection, slash convention, and filesystem permissions together.

Should I change DocumentRoot to serve /app/?
Only if the entire site should use that directory as its root. If /app/ is one section below the existing site tree, keep the parent as DocumentRoot and place the files in its app/ subdirectory. Changing the root changes what the site’s / URL serves.
When should I use Alias instead of DocumentRoot?
Use Alias when the files are outside the virtual host’s DocumentRoot or when the public URL must stay /app/ while the physical directory has another location. Add a matching
Why does an Alias return 403?
Check Require authorization for the exact destination, read permission on the file, and execute (traverse) permission on every parent directory. A higher-level restriction can also deny access. Do not grant a broad parent merely to make the error disappear.
Why does /app work differently from /app/?
A slash-terminated Alias URL-path requires the requested URL to include the trailing slash for that alias to match. Test both spellings and keep the declaration and client URLs consistent.
Why is my Alias returning 404?
Verify the URL prefix and filesystem destination, confirm the Alias is in the VirtualHost that received the request, and check configuration order. Apache uses the first matching alias, so a broader earlier alias can capture the request.
How do I confirm which VirtualHost Apache selected?
Run apachectl -S, or httpd.exe -S on Windows. Also verify DNS, the request hostname, ServerName, ServerAlias, and the address and port in the VirtualHost declaration.

Can .htaccess make a correct Alias appear broken?
Yes. Rewrite rules or other allowed per-directory directives can change handling after the initial mapping. Keep a normal subdirectory under DocumentRoot when its URL and filesystem location naturally match. Use Alias for an external target, authorize that exact target with <Directory>, keep slash conventions consistent, and verify virtual-host selection, alias order, indexes, logs, and complete filesystem permissions before widening access.
