An oxygen deficit or Faradaic efficiency below 100% does not identify the loss mechanism by itself. To separate oxygen leakage (gas crossover), product recombination, and electrode charge-carrier recombination, first calculate the product rate expected from charge, then measure hydrogen and oxygen in every relevant compartment, quantify crossover, and use charge-transfer efficiency to examine photoanode losses independently.

What “recombination” means in a water-splitting experiment

Three different phenomena are often compressed into the word recombination. They require different measurements and produce different remedies.

Charge-carrier recombination at an electrode

In a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell, photogenerated electrons and holes can recombine in the semiconductor bulk or at its surface before completing the water-oxidation or hydrogen-evolution reaction. This is an electrode loss: the charge disappears before an equivalent amount of chemical product is formed. It is not the same as hydrogen and oxygen mixing after they have already been generated.

Product recombination after formation

Hydrogen and oxygen can react back toward water before they reach the sampling point. This reverse reaction reduces the amount of gas recovered even though the electrochemical steps initially produced the products.

Gas crossover or oxygen leakage

Gas crossover is physical transfer of one product into the other compartment. Hydrogen that reaches the oxygen chamber through a membrane, separator, liquid path, or headspace leak has crossed compartments; its presence there is not, by itself, evidence that hydrogen and oxygen recombined. A membrane-free neutral-pH system, for example, reported up to 40% hydrogen in the oxygen chamber while showing negligible product-recombination loss near 3.0 mA cm−2 under that system’s conditions. That published result describes one architecture and operating point, not a universal crossover rate (Energy & Environmental Science, 2014).

Why a low Faradaic efficiency is only a warning signal

Faradaic efficiency (ηF) compares measured product formation with the amount predicted from the charge passed. A value below 100% is important, but it does not tell you which loss occurred. The 2022 PEC best-practices review states: “A less than 100% ηF indicates competing electrochemical reactions, recombination of products prior to collection, loss of products prior to measurement, and/or membrane crossover in the testing vessel.” Read that list as a differential diagnosis, not as a single explanation (Frontiers in Energy Research, 2022).

Competing electrochemical reactions can consume current without producing the target gases. Product can be lost through tubing, dissolution, leaks, or sampling. A separator can pass hydrogen into the oxygen side, or oxygen into the hydrogen side. A reverse reaction can consume products before collection. Only measurements that track both gases and the cell’s physical configuration can distinguish those cases.

Step 1: Calculate the product rate expected from charge

Begin with the charge balance before interpreting any gas result. Integrate the current over the measurement interval to obtain charge, and convert that charge using the appropriate electron stoichiometry. Hydrogen evolution requires two electrons per H2 molecule; oxygen evolution requires four electrons per O2 molecule. Use the actual electrode area, current, duration, temperature and pressure conventions, electrolyte, and gas-volume reference in the calculation.

State whether the experiment uses a two-electrode or three-electrode configuration. A three-electrode measurement with an externally applied bias characterizes the electrode under that bias; it cannot automatically be reported as the solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of an unbiased photoelectrode. The PEC best-practices review specifically cautions against extrapolating a biased three-electrode result to an unbiased solar device (Frontiers in Energy Research, 2022).

Keep the expected amounts for both products, not only oxygen. The theoretical H2:O2 molar ratio is 2:1 for overall water splitting. A deficit in one stream can therefore be tested against an excess in the other stream or against a measured gas in an opposite compartment.

Step 2: Measure evolved gases with a controlled method

Gas chromatography is the preferred quantitative method

The 2022 measurement review identifies gas chromatography (GC) as the best method for measuring evolved hydrogen. Use a calibrated instrument and document the calibration gases, detector response, sampling volume, pressure and temperature corrections, and detection limits for the H2 and O2 concentrations in your system (Frontiers in Energy Research, 2022).

Periodic syringe sampling needs contamination controls

Gas-tight syringe samples can be taken at intervals when continuous analysis is unavailable. Record the sampling frequency and the volume removed at each event. Repeatedly piercing a septum or opening a vessel can draw air into the headspace; atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen then obscure the original composition. Purge sampling lines, use leak-tight fittings, and account for every removed volume. The review describes this approach as more vulnerable to air contamination than a continuous carrier-gas arrangement (Frontiers in Energy Research, 2022).

A closed carrier-gas loop reduces handling losses

The preferred arrangement in the review is a continuous carrier-gas loop that sweeps the headspace to the analyzer and returns or otherwise accounts for the carrier stream. A closed, documented gas path reduces the opportunity for ambient-air ingress and makes it possible to integrate the product signal over time. Verify that tubing, valves, seals, and the analyzer are compatible with hydrogen and oxygen mixtures and that the flow rate is stable.

Step 3: Analyze both compartments, not just the collection line

Sample the hydrogen-side and oxygen-side headspaces separately. If a hydrogen collection line contains less H2 than the charge calculation predicts, the missing hydrogen may have crossed into the oxygen chamber, dissolved, escaped through a leak, been consumed in a reverse reaction, or never formed because of an electrode loss. A single outlet measurement cannot distinguish those possibilities.

For each interval, report:

  • the moles of H2 and O2 recovered from each chamber;
  • the gas composition in each chamber, including the product normally assigned to the other side;
  • the total product recovered from all outlets and headspaces;
  • the crossover fraction, defined from the amount found in the opposite compartment and the chosen denominator;
  • sampling times, flow rates, pressure and temperature, and any gas volume removed during sampling.

Measure the oxygen chamber for hydrogen and the hydrogen chamber for oxygen. “Oxygen leakage” is often used to mean oxygen entering the hydrogen stream, but the same accounting applies in the opposite direction. Reporting both directions prevents a one-sided deficit from being mistaken for a chemical reverse reaction.

Step 4: Separate crossover from product recombination

Evidence for crossover

Detecting a product in the opposite compartment is direct evidence of transport into that compartment, provided the sampling system and analyzer are leak-tight and the gas could not have entered through an external leak. Compare concentrations over time and, when possible, vary separator type, flow rate, pressure difference, or compartment volume. A transport-related signal should respond to those physical changes.

The 2014 membrane-free study illustrates why location matters: hydrogen was measured in the oxygen chamber at fractions as high as 40%, while the authors found negligible recombination loss near 3.0 mA cm−2 in that system (Energy & Environmental Science, 2014). Do not relabel oxygen-side hydrogen as “recombined” merely because it is on the wrong side.

Evidence for product recombination

Product recombination is supported when the total amount of H2 plus O2 falls after formation without a corresponding increase in the opposite compartment or an identifiable external leak. A time-delay test can help: compare gas composition close to the electrode with composition after residence in the cell or collection line. A decline associated with longer residence, catalytic surfaces, elevated temperature, or increased gas contact supports a reverse-reaction pathway.

Do not infer recombination from a low ηF alone. To make that attribution, first close the gas balance and quantify crossover and collection losses.

Check external leaks before assigning an internal mechanism

Pressure-test the vessel, fittings, septa, valves, and tubing. A leak to the room can remove product without placing it in the opposite chamber. A leak between chambers can mimic membrane crossover. Use an inert-gas leak check where compatible with the apparatus, then repeat the gas analysis after the leak is repaired.

Step 5: Evaluate electrode losses with charge-transfer efficiency

Gas measurements show what reaches collection; they do not by themselves locate losses inside a photoelectrode. For a photoanode, charge-transfer efficiency is the ratio of holes reaching the surface that actually contribute to water oxidation to all holes arriving at the surface. The metric can help distinguish bulk recombination from surface recombination when interpreted with suitable photocurrent and chemical measurements.

The method described in Accurate determination of the charge transfer efficiency of photoanodes for solar water splitting is intended to separate these electrode-level losses (Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics, 2017). A low charge-transfer efficiency points to losses at or near the surface after carriers reach it; a lower bulk transport yield points to recombination before carriers reach the interface. Neither metric measures membrane crossover, headspace leakage, or reverse reaction in the gas line.

Use charge-transfer efficiency alongside, rather than instead of, two-compartment gas analysis. If the electrode metric is poor and the gas balance closes, electrode recombination is a plausible dominant loss. If the electrode metric is high but hydrogen appears in the oxygen chamber, the remaining problem is more likely transport or gas handling.

How cell architecture changes the diagnosis

Architecture or method What it helps establish Main ambiguity or control
One-compartment cell Simple overall gas collection and fewer physical boundaries Hydrogen and oxygen share a headspace, so crossover and reverse reaction can occur before sampling; measure composition and residence time carefully
Separate hydrogen and oxygen compartments Allows each product stream and opposite-side contamination to be quantified Membrane, separator, liquid, or headspace transport must be measured rather than assumed negligible
Membrane-free separated arrangement Removes a membrane as a specific transport barrier while retaining separate chambers Gas and liquid crossover can still occur; the 40% oxygen-side hydrogen result is system-specific
Periodic syringe sampling Practical when continuous analysis is unavailable Sampling can introduce air and remove headspace volume; document intervals and corrections
Continuous carrier-gas loop with GC Tracks evolving composition while reducing manual sampling contamination Requires calibrated flow, leak-tight plumbing, and analyzer response validation
Charge-transfer-efficiency measurement Addresses bulk and surface photoanode charge losses Does not quantify gas crossover or post-formation product recombination

Separate-cell demonstrations should not be ranked by efficiency without matching architecture, illumination, bias, area, gas analysis, and reporting protocol. A 2017 Nature Materials study reported 7.5% solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency for hydrogen generation in separate PEC cells and stated that the result could readily surpass 10% with standard commercial components (Nature Materials, 2017). A 2025 separated-cell photocatalytic system reported 2.47 ± 0.03% solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency (Nature Communications, 2025). These values come from different systems and conditions, so they are not a standardized head-to-head comparison.

A practical diagnostic sequence

  1. Define the accounting boundary. Draw both compartments, electrodes, separator, liquid connections, headspaces, tubing, valves, analyzer, and sampling ports. Mark where gas can be produced, transferred, consumed, or lost.
  2. Record operating conditions. Specify illumination spectrum and intensity, temperature, pressure, electrolyte, electrode area, current or photocurrent, duration, flow rate, and whether the test is two-electrode or three-electrode.
  3. Calculate theoretical H2 and O2. Convert integrated charge using two-electron hydrogen and four-electron oxygen stoichiometry, then state the gas reference conditions.
  4. Calibrate the gas method. Validate GC response or syringe-to-GC transfer with known standards and establish detection limits for both gases.
  5. Collect from every relevant location. Analyze both product outlets and both headspaces; account for carrier gas and every sample volume removed.
  6. Compute a complete balance. Compare total measured product with the charge prediction, then calculate the fraction of each product found in the opposite chamber.
  7. Test transport separately. Inspect seals and fittings, vary residence time or separator conditions where safe, and check whether opposite-side gas responds as a transport signal.
  8. Test reverse reaction separately. Examine product decline after formation and compare immediate versus delayed collection while holding electrode operation constant.
  9. Measure electrode charge-transfer efficiency. Use the photoanode metric to identify bulk or surface charge losses, and keep that result separate from gas-recovery efficiency.
  10. Report uncertainty and attribution. Give calibration uncertainty, replicate variation, gas recovery, crossover fraction, and the evidence supporting each assigned loss. If the balance does not close, call the remainder an unresolved loss rather than forcing it into recombination.

Published system figures and how to use them

Reported result What it demonstrates What it does not establish
7.5% solar-to-hydrogen efficiency in separate PEC cells (2017) Separated oxygen and hydrogen production can achieve substantial device efficiency It is not a universal efficiency for all separated cells or a direct measure of crossover
Up to 40% hydrogen in the oxygen chamber; negligible recombination loss near 3.0 mA cm−2 (2014) Crossover can be large while product-recombination loss is small in a particular membrane-free system It is not an expected crossover percentage for other cells
2.47 ± 0.03% solar-to-hydrogen efficiency (2025) A separated-cell photocatalytic system achieved the stated laboratory efficiency It cannot be compared directly with the PEC result without matching test conditions
692.5 cm2 outdoor setup; 1.21% average efficiency during one week of natural sunlight (2025) Large-area outdoor operation has been demonstrated for the cited photocatalytic system The weekly outdoor average is not a substitute for a controlled laboratory gas-balance measurement

The 2025 outdoor result and the 2025 laboratory result are from the same reported separated-cell photocatalytic system, but they represent different test environments. Weather, sunlight variation, gas handling, and averaging period must remain attached to the outdoor number (Nature Communications, 2025).

Common interpretation errors and corrections

  • Calling every sub-100% ηF recombination: first check competing reactions, collection loss, crossover, and sampling contamination.
  • Measuring only hydrogen: analyze oxygen and both compartments so a missing product can be traced.
  • Calling opposite-side gas “recombined”: gas in the other chamber supports crossover unless an independent mechanism explains its transport.
  • Ignoring three-electrode bias: keep biased electrode performance distinct from unbiased solar-to-hydrogen efficiency.
  • Using syringe samples without an air blank: verify that sampling did not add atmospheric oxygen or nitrogen.
  • Reporting a crossover percentage without a denominator: state whether it is relative to generated product, collected product, or gas in the receiving chamber.
  • Comparing published efficiencies as if standardized: retain each study’s architecture, illumination, area, bias, and measurement protocol.
  • Using charge-transfer efficiency as a gas test: it diagnoses photoanode charge losses, not separator leakage or gas-line recovery.

Minimum reporting checklist

  • Cell drawing showing compartments, separator, liquid paths, headspaces, and gas plumbing.
  • Electrode type, illuminated area, electrolyte, temperature, pressure, light conditions, and operating current or bias.
  • Two-electrode or three-electrode configuration, with the applied bias if relevant.
  • Charge integration interval and electron stoichiometry used for each theoretical product rate.
  • GC calibration details or syringe sampling interval, sample volume, carrier-gas flow, and contamination controls.
  • H2 and O2 concentrations and amounts from every outlet and compartment.
  • Total recovery, crossover fraction, uncertainty, replicate count, and unresolved balance.
  • Charge-transfer-efficiency method and the electrode-level loss assigned to bulk or surface processes.

Bottom line for diagnosing an oxygen deficit

Start with charge, close the gas balance, and measure both sides of the cell. Gas in the opposite chamber points toward crossover; disappearance without a corresponding transfer points toward product loss or reverse reaction; a poor photoanode charge-transfer efficiency points toward electrode recombination. Because these signals can coexist, attribute a loss only after the competing explanations have been measured under the same operating conditions.
