To send WordPress email through SendGrid, install and activate the SendGrid WordPress plugin, then choose either its API connection or SMTP relay. API mode uses a SendGrid API key; SMTP mode uses smtp.sendgrid.net, the literal username apikey, that API key as the password, and a supported port such as 587. Verify the sender or domain before testing delivery.
The sequence matters: authenticate the domain, configure one delivery path, send a test to an address you control, and only then rely on WordPress for password resets, contact forms, order messages, or other notifications.

How WordPress email reaches SendGrid
WordPress normally hands outgoing messages to the wp_mail() function. The SendGrid plugin replaces that default path and forwards the message through one of two transports:
- API: WordPress makes an authenticated HTTPS request to SendGrid using an API key.
- SMTP: WordPress connects to SendGrid’s SMTP relay and authenticates with a username, password, host, and port.
SendGrid then accepts or rejects the submission based on authentication, sender authorization, message policy, and the receiving system’s response. A successful API response or SMTP hand-off proves that SendGrid accepted the message; it does not guarantee that the recipient’s mailbox will place it in the inbox.

Why use a transactional mail service
Web-server mail functions are often affected by hosting restrictions, inconsistent sender identity, or poor authentication. Routing through SendGrid gives WordPress a defined relay and a credentialed sending identity. Domain authentication also lets receiving systems associate the From domain with the service that is authorized to send on its behalf.
What you need before configuring the plugin
- A SendGrid account with permission to create an API key.
- Administrator access to the WordPress dashboard.
- Access to the DNS records for the domain that will appear in the From address if you plan to use domain authentication.
- A mailbox you control for testing. Use it to check both successful arrival and spam placement.
- A decision about whether your site will use API mode or SMTP mode. Do not configure both as competing mail paths.
Use a sender address on a domain you control whenever possible. The visible From address, authenticated domain, and Reply-To address should make sense together; an unrelated or unverified From address is a common reason for rejection or filtering.

Install the SendGrid WordPress plugin
- Sign in to WordPress as an administrator.
- Open Plugins and select Add New.
- Search for SendGrid Plugin.
- Select Install Now, then select Activate.
- Open the plugin’s settings page and choose the API or SMTP configuration that matches your plan.
The plugin is designed to replace WordPress’s default wp_mail() implementation. Another plugin that declares its own wp_mail() function can prevent the SendGrid integration from taking control. If settings appear correct but messages still follow a different route, temporarily review mail, form, security, and hosting plugins for another mail implementation.
Create a SendGrid API key safely
- Create or sign in to your SendGrid account.
- Open the account area for API keys and create a key for this WordPress installation.
- Grant only the permissions the integration needs. A sending integration needs the permission that allows mail to be sent; avoid broad administrative access when a narrower scope works.
- Copy the key when SendGrid displays it. Treat it like a password and do not paste it into a public support ticket, theme file, or repository.
Separate keys by site or environment when practical. If a key is exposed, revoke it in SendGrid, create a replacement with limited permissions, and update the site immediately. A revoked key cannot continue authenticating mail, so plan the replacement before disabling a key that a live site still uses.

Keeping the key out of WordPress code
Enter the key in the plugin settings only when that is the available protected storage. Where your hosting setup supports protected server configuration, store the secret there instead of committing it to a theme or plugin. The legacy plugin documentation recognizes these constants in wp-config.php:

Authenticate the sender or domain
SendGrid supports sender verification and domain authentication. Sender verification confirms that the address is permitted to send. Domain authentication goes further by proving ownership of the domain, authorizing SendGrid to send for it, and helping preserve message integrity.
Domain authentication procedure
- In SendGrid, start the domain-authentication workflow and enter the domain used by your From address.
- Copy the DNS records SendGrid generates for that domain.
- At your DNS provider, publish those records exactly as supplied. Preserve the host names, record types, and values; do not substitute your WordPress server’s address.
- Return to SendGrid and run its verification check.
- Use a From address on the authenticated domain in the WordPress plugin.
The records are generated for your domain, so the exact values differ between installations. A domain can be authenticated while a particular From address is still mistyped; check spelling and the domain suffix in both SendGrid and WordPress. If you cannot edit DNS, use the sender-verification option available in your account, understanding that it authenticates the individual address rather than the whole domain.

Configure API mode
API mode is usually the most direct setup when the integration exposes SendGrid API fields. It avoids SMTP host and port troubleshooting and gives the plugin an explicit API response when authentication or submission fails.
- Open the SendGrid plugin settings in WordPress.
- Select the API integration option.
- Paste the SendGrid API key into the key field. Check for leading or trailing spaces before saving.
- Enter the From name and the From email address. Use the verified address or an address on the authenticated domain.
- Save the settings.
- Use the plugin’s test-email form to send a message to a mailbox you control.
If the test is rejected, inspect the API error shown by the plugin or in SendGrid’s activity tools. Confirm that the key is active, its scope includes mail sending, and the From identity is verified. An API key can authenticate successfully while a sender is still rejected, because credential authorization and sender authorization are separate checks.
Configure SMTP mode
Choose SMTP when an existing WordPress mail stack requires SMTP fields or when compatibility with a tool that does not support the SendGrid API is more important than API-specific diagnostics.

SMTP setup steps
- Open the plugin’s SMTP settings.
- Enter
smtp.sendgrid.netas the host. - Enter the lowercase string
apikeyas the username. - Paste the generated API key into the password field.
- Set the port to
587first. If outbound traffic on that port is blocked, test2525; port25may be restricted by a hosting provider or network. - Enable the TLS option required by the plugin for the selected port.
- Set the From name and verified From address, save, and send a test message.
The exact username is the most frequently missed SMTP value. SendGrid’s SMTP instructions require the string apikey; entering the API key as the username causes authentication to fail even when the password is correct.

The legacy WordPress plugin’s SMTP path documents Swift Mailer as a dependency. If that version reports a missing mailer library, install the dependency it specifies or use the plugin’s API mode instead of guessing at a replacement library.
API or SMTP: which should you choose?

Neither transport bypasses sender verification or recipient filtering. Select API when the plugin supports it cleanly and you want direct API errors. Select SMTP when another component already expects SMTP credentials or cannot make SendGrid API requests.
Send and inspect a real test email
Do not treat a saved settings page as proof that WordPress can deliver mail. Run a test through the same plugin path that production messages will use.
- Open the plugin’s test-email form after saving valid credentials.
- Send to an address you control, preferably at the mailbox provider your users commonly use.
- Wait for the message to appear, then check both the inbox and spam or junk folder.
- Inspect the visible From name and address, the Reply-To address, subject, and links.
- Review the plugin’s error output and SendGrid’s event or activity information if the message does not arrive.
- Repeat after correcting any sender, authentication, or connection error.
A message in spam is not the same as an authentication failure. A successful hand-off means the relay accepted the message, while final placement depends on the receiving mailbox’s filtering and the alignment of the message’s identity. Verify the domain, use a consistent From address, and avoid changing the From identity between forms, password resets, and store notifications without a reason.

Make the production setup reliable
Use one authoritative From identity
Set a recognizable From name and a mailbox on the authenticated domain. Let visitors’ replies go to a monitored Reply-To address when that differs from the sending address. Keep the address stable so recipients and mailbox filters can recognize legitimate messages.
Limit and rotate credentials
Create a key with the narrowest scope that supports sending. Do not reuse a full-access administrative credential. When a developer, contractor, or plugin no longer needs access, revoke the old key and issue a new one. After rotation, send a test immediately because a stale key leaves every WordPress notification unable to authenticate.
Check every message-producing feature
WordPress can generate mail from several components: account registration, password reset, contact forms, comments, ecommerce events, and scheduled tasks. A successful plugin test exercises the transport, but it may not expose a form plugin that overrides the From address or sends through its own provider. Trigger one representative message from each critical feature and confirm that it uses the intended path.
Keep a recovery path
Record which transport is active, which port is allowed by the host, where the key is stored, and which domain is authenticated. This information lets another administrator restore service without placing the secret in a ticket or public document. If SendGrid is unavailable or a key must be revoked, pause nonessential automated mail while fixing authentication rather than repeatedly retrying with an exposed credential.
Troubleshoot common failures
Authentication failed in API mode
- Generate or replace the API key and confirm it includes the permission to send mail.
- Remove accidental spaces or line breaks from the key field.
- Check that the key has not been revoked.
- Confirm that the plugin is actually set to API mode and that another mail plugin is not intercepting
wp_mail().
Authentication failed in SMTP mode
- Set the username to the exact lowercase value
apikey. - Use the API key as the password; do not use the SendGrid account email or account password.
- Confirm the key’s sending permission and replace it if it was revoked.
- Check the host spelling:
smtp.sendgrid.net.
Sender rejected or marked unverified
- Complete sender verification or domain authentication in SendGrid.
- Publish every DNS record SendGrid supplies, without changing its value.
- Match the WordPress From address to the verified address or authenticated domain.
- Check for a typo in the domain, especially a subdomain that was not included in authentication.
SMTP connection times out
- Try port
587, then2525if the hosting network blocks the first port. - Check whether the host blocks outbound SMTP traffic.
- Confirm that the TLS setting matches the port and the plugin’s available options.
- Use API mode if the host permits HTTPS but restricts SMTP connections.
The plugin appears configured, but WordPress uses another path
Look for another plugin that declares wp_mail() or provides its own SMTP/API mailer. Disable one competing mail implementation at a time, send a test after each change, and keep the implementation that owns the production route. Also check form or ecommerce plugins that have a separate mail-provider setting.
Messages arrive in spam
- Confirm that domain authentication is complete and that the From domain aligns with the authenticated identity.
- Inspect the From and Reply-To values for unexpected or unrelated addresses.
- Check the recipient mailbox’s filtering and quarantine rules.
- Do not describe a successful API response as guaranteed inbox placement; delivery and placement are controlled partly by the receiving system.
A key was exposed
- Revoke the exposed key in SendGrid.
- Create a replacement with only the required sending permission.
- Update the WordPress configuration or protected server setting.
- Send a test from the site and check the logs for continuing authentication failures.
A practical launch checklist
- SendGrid account created and accessible to the site administrator.
- API key created with limited sending permission.
- Key stored outside public code where the hosting setup allows it.
- Sender address verified or sending domain authenticated.
- DNS records published exactly as SendGrid supplied them.
- One transport selected: API or SMTP.
- If SMTP is selected: host
smtp.sendgrid.net, usernameapikey, API key password, supported port, and matching TLS setting. - No competing plugin has taken over
wp_mail(). - Test message received and inspected in both inbox and spam folders.
- Password reset, form, and other critical WordPress notifications tested separately.
What to do when changing hosts or domains
Changing web hosts may alter outbound SMTP restrictions, so retest the selected port after migration. Changing the From domain requires new sender or domain authentication and a review of the DNS records. Keep the old configuration available until the replacement domain has passed a real test, then rotate credentials if the old server or its configuration was shared with someone who no longer needs access.
