Yes, but the method depends on your device and what you mean by “split.” Mirroring the same sound to headphones and speakers, switching one headphone between sources, and sending different apps to different outputs are separate tasks. macOS has a documented built-in option for playing audio through multiple devices; Windows and Android behavior depends more on the particular hardware and software. For a wired source shared by multiple listeners, a compatible splitter or headphone amplifier may work.
First, decide what “split audio” means
Before changing settings or buying an accessory, identify the result you want:
- Mirror: Play the same audio through headphones and speakers at once.
- Switch: Choose which output plays, or move headphones between source devices.
- Separate: Send different apps or sounds to different outputs.
- Share one wired source: Let two or more people listen through headphones connected to one analog output.
Support for one task does not imply support for the others. In particular, headphones that switch between two phones are not necessarily receiving a copy of a phone’s audio while its speaker plays.
How to play audio through multiple devices on a Mac
macOS provides a built-in Multi-Output Device option in Audio MIDI Setup. Apple explains that audio sent to the primary device is also played through the other devices included in the multi-output setup.

- Open Audio MIDI Setup on your Mac.
- Click the Add button at the bottom of the Audio Devices sidebar.
- Choose Create Multi-Output Device.
- Select the new device and check Use for each output you want included.
- Choose a Primary Device.
- Select the Multi-Output Device as the Mac’s sound output.
Apple documents this workflow for playing audio through several devices at once: Play audio through multiple devices at once in Audio MIDI Setup on Mac. Available outputs depend on what is connected and supported.
Selecting one output instead
To use a single output, go to Apple menu > System Settings > Sound > Output, then select the device. Apple lists possible outputs such as the Mac’s internal speakers, devices connected to its sound port, USB speakers, and AirPlay devices, depending on what is available: Change the sound output settings on Mac.

Multi-Output Device is not the same as Aggregate Device
An Aggregate Device combines audio devices for applications and recording workflows; it is not the same setup as a Multi-Output Device for sending audio to multiple outputs. There is also an app-specific exception: Apple says GarageBand can output to only one device. For sharing GarageBand audio among multiple headphones, Apple suggests a splitter or headphone amplifier: Create an Aggregate Device to combine multiple audio devices.

Windows lets you choose among connected output devices, but the Microsoft guidance cited here does not establish a universal built-in procedure that mirrors all system audio to independent headphones and speakers on every Windows PC. The available behavior can depend on the computer, drivers, connected devices, and software.

Choose or switch the output
On Surface devices, Microsoft says to select the speaker icon on the taskbar and expand the device list to switch between speakers and connected accessories. You can also choose the default output in Settings > System > Sound. These steps select an output; they are not instructions for guaranteed simultaneous playback: Surface sound, volume, and audio accessories.
If Bluetooth headphones connect but play no sound
Check that the headphones are selected under Settings > System > Sound. Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 troubleshooting also covers reconnecting the device, updating drivers, and checking A2DP support. Those are connection and playback checks, not a method for mirroring sound to a second output: Fix Bluetooth connected but no sound issue on Windows.

If you need simultaneous playback on a Windows PC, check the documentation for that PC and its audio software for a supported routing option. Do not assume that selecting a default output will also play through another device.

Android: headphone switching is not the same as output mirroring
Android features called Multipoint and Audio Switch describe moving playback between source devices with compatible headphones. They do not, by themselves, show that an Android phone can play the same audio through its built-in speaker and Bluetooth headphones at once.

Multipoint headphones
Google’s Multipoint instructions describe headphones connected to two source devices. To move media playback, stop it on the first source and start it on the other: Set up Multipoint headphones on your devices.
Audio Switch
Google Audio Switch is also for switching supported headphones among Android devices. Google lists requirements including Android 8 or later, Google Play Services, Fast Pair setup, and the same Google Account on each source device: Set up audio switch on your Android device.
Why Android’s routing capabilities vary
The Android Open Source Project describes combined audio routing as dependent on Android version and device implementation. Android 11 and earlier had limited support for routing to multiple devices of the same type. Android 12 removed some restrictions for use cases such as audio broadcasting and multicasting to Bluetooth Low Energy headphones, but the documented capabilities still have limits. Android 14 supports routing to multiple USB devices of different audio device types only when the kernel and device vendor support it. These platform capabilities do not guarantee that every phone exposes the same controls: Combined audio device routing.
Sharing one wired source with multiple headphones
A compatible analog splitter can duplicate one wired audio output for multiple headphones. Search for a 3.5 mm stereo splitter if the source and headphones use compatible 3.5 mm analog connections. If several headphones need more drive or separate volume controls, consider a headphone amplifier instead. Apple names either a splitter or headphone amplifier for sharing GarageBand audio among headphones, while noting that GarageBand itself outputs to one device (Apple Support).
- Check the source connection: the jack must be an audio output, not a microphone-only input.
- Confirm plug size and wiring compatibility for the source and each headphone.
- Check whether you need separate volume controls or additional amplification.
A basic analog splitter duplicates one output. It does not route different apps separately, and it does not synchronize Bluetooth headphones with speakers.

What to consider before using two outputs
- Synchronization: A wired split avoids the independent wireless buffering associated with using separate wireless routes. Mixed or separate wireless outputs may not stay in sync; no latency figure is established here.
- Volume control: Check whether each output can be adjusted or muted independently. A basic splitter may not provide separate controls.
- Connection type: Analog, USB, Bluetooth, and AirPlay outputs follow different routing paths. A method that works for one connection type may not work for a mixed setup.
- Separate app audio: Mirroring one output does not mean you can assign different apps to different devices.
