OPay lets customers in Nigeria move money to bank accounts or other wallets, pay supported household bills, and purchase airtime or data from its mobile app. The safest way to use it is to treat the live app as the authority for recipient options, billers, fees, limits, and terms: those details can change, and a complete fixed screen-by-screen sequence is not published in the available official material.
This guide shows what OPay supports, how to complete each transaction without guessing at unavailable menu labels, what to verify before authorizing payment, and what to do when a debit, delivery, or recipient detail does not look right.
What you can do with OPay
OPay describes transfers between an OPay wallet, a bank account, and another user’s wallet or account. Its app listing says you can select a recipient by phone number or bank account, including when the recipient does not use OPay. The wider OPay services description also mentions phone, gas, and data-plan payments. Availability can depend on the account, location, provider, and current app configuration, so do not assume that every named category or provider will appear for you.

- Use the current OPay app and an account that is able to make the transaction.
- Have the destination information ready: a phone number, bank account details, bill account or meter reference, or the phone number that will receive airtime.
- Keep enough balance for the payment and any charge displayed on the confirmation screen.

Exact button names, account-opening or identity-verification screens, transfer timelines, airtime denominations, and biller coverage are not fixed in the published material. Choosing the right way to send money
Use the destination route that matches the details the recipient gave you. An OPay-wallet transfer may be suitable when the other person uses OPay and has supplied the correct phone number or wallet identifier. A phone-number route can be useful when the app offers it and the recipient’s number is verified, including for someone who is not an OPay user. How to send money with OPay
Choose the recipient route
The app may offer more than one destination type. Select the route that matches the information supplied by the person or business receiving the money.

Step-by-step transfer workflow
- Open OPay and enter the money-transfer function offered on your home screen.
- Choose the recipient type available for your payment: an OPay user, a phone-number destination, or a bank account.
- Enter the requested destination details exactly as provided. If the app resolves a recipient name, compare it with the person or organization you intend to pay.
- Enter the amount. Review the destination, amount, displayed charge, and any other transaction terms on the review screen.
- Authorize only after the details are correct, using the authentication method the app requests.
- Save or note the transaction reference and check Transaction History to confirm the recorded status.
Do not describe a transfer as universally instant or free. OPay’s consumer homepage advertises transfers to other Nigerian bank accounts as free within applicable free-transfer limits, while warning that restrictions apply. Its wording is: “Free transfer limits and other restrictions may apply. Please refer to the OPay App for the latest applicable terms.” The amount and route shown in your app take precedence over a general marketing statement.
After sending
Check the recorded transaction status rather than relying only on a push alert. A recipient may not see a notification immediately, and the absence of an alert does not by itself prove that the transfer failed. Ask the recipient to check the actual destination balance or account activity when appropriate.

How to pay a bill with OPay

Step-by-step bill payment workflow
- Open the bill-payment area in OPay and select the category visible for your bill.
- Select a provider from the list currently offered. If the provider is absent, do not substitute a similarly named company.
- Enter the meter number, subscriber number, customer account, phone number, or other reference requested by the provider.
- Enter or select the amount and plan details. Some billers may require a fixed amount or a specific package; use only the choices the app presents.
- Read the customer name, account or meter information, amount, and any fee shown in the review stage. Stop if the resolved details do not match your bill.
- Authorize the payment and retain the confirmation or transaction reference.
A successful debit does not mean that every biller will update at the same instant. Provider processing and provider-specific terms can affect when a service balance, subscription, token, or account status changes. If the app supplies a token or reference, copy it exactly and store it with the transaction record.

Match the provider name and customer details against a recent bill, decoder record, meter document, or account message before paying. Do not infer that two providers with similar names are interchangeable. For electricity, check that the meter or customer reference is the one requested by the selected provider. For television and internet, verify the subscriber number and package; an incorrect package can produce a valid payment for the wrong service. For water, phone, gas, or data-plan categories, use only the account fields and provider choices displayed in your app.
Record the amount, provider, reference, and time. This makes it easier to compare the biller’s account status with the OPay transaction if the service does not update. Avoid submitting a second payment simply because the provider’s account has not refreshed yet; first establish whether the original transaction is pending, completed, or otherwise identified in the record.

- Open the airtime or data top-up function offered in the OPay app.
- Choose the network shown for the intended line. Do not rely on a contact name alone if the number may have changed networks.
- Enter the recipient’s phone number, or select the number only if you can verify it carefully.
- Choose airtime or data, then enter the amount or plan available on the live screen.
- Before authorizing, check the network, every digit of the phone number, amount, plan, and any charge or promotional condition.
- Complete authentication and retain the transaction record until the recipient confirms receipt or the data balance updates.
OPay’s homepage currently advertises “Up to 6% instant cashback on airtime/data top-up every time.” That is a company promotional maximum, not a guaranteed rate for every user, network, amount, or date. Check the offer’s eligibility, duration, and terms in the app before treating cashback as part of the value of a purchase.
Prepaid airtime remains subject to the selected telecom provider’s own terms. If a network rejects, delays, or reverses a top-up, the provider’s rules may determine the outcome.

Confirm whether you are purchasing airtime credit or a data plan before authorizing; the two products can have different choices and terms. Check the recipient number from the live screen rather than relying on a contact label, especially when using dual-SIM phones or sending to another person. If the app displays a network or plan name, compare it with what the recipient requested. Keep the transaction record until the line balance or data account reflects the purchase.

How to find a transfer record
OPay’s app listing says transfer details are available in Transaction History. Open the relevant history entry whenever you need to confirm the destination, amount, status, or reference. Save a screenshot or copy the reference only after checking that it belongs to the correct transaction; a notification preview is not a substitute for the full record.
When contacting support, describe one transaction at a time and use the reference attached to that entry. Include the destination and amount shown in the record, but do not send your PIN, one-time code, password, or other authentication secret. Keeping records for transfers, bills, and top-ups also helps you distinguish a delayed notification from a genuinely missing delivery.
What to do when a transaction goes wrong
Your account was debited but the recipient has not received the money
- Open the affected transaction in Transaction History and read its current status and destination details.
- Ask the recipient to check the actual balance or account activity, not only a notification.
- From that transaction’s details, use Chat with OPay Support, the support route identified in OPay’s FAQ.
- Provide the transaction reference, amount, destination, and time shown in the record. Do not create a second transfer until the first transaction’s status is clear.
OPay’s FAQ notes that notifications can be delayed. Support should investigate the transaction record; do not assume that waiting or retrying will resolve a duplicate debit.
Money went to the wrong recipient
Contact the unintended recipient immediately and ask for cooperation. OPay’s FAQ warns that it is not responsible for incorrect peer-to-peer transfers, so recovery is not guaranteed. Keep the original transaction record and do not send additional money to “unlock” or “reverse” a transfer unless the official support channel confirms a legitimate process.
A bill payment has the wrong account or provider
Stop making repeat payments. Record the transaction and the incorrect details, then contact the biller and OPay through the support option attached to the transaction. Whether a reversal or correction is possible depends on the provider and the payment status; neither is automatic.
Airtime or data has not arrived
Confirm the number, network, product, amount, and transaction status in the record. If those are correct, check the line’s balance or data account and allow for provider processing. Then use the transaction-specific support chat and, where appropriate, the network provider’s support channel. Prepaid products are governed by the telecom provider’s terms.

You see an unfamiliar debit
Review Transaction History for the destination, amount, and reference, and avoid authorizing another payment while you investigate. Use the support route attached to the unfamiliar transaction through the official app. Never provide authentication codes to someone who contacts you unexpectedly claiming to be support.
