Yes—you can send money from India to a person in Nepal through the UPI–NPI cross-border service, provided your Indian bank or payment app, and the recipient’s Nepal-side institution, are participating. The person-to-person (P2P) linkage went live in June 2026. You identify the recipient with a Nepal mobile number or virtual payment address (VPA), give one-time cross-border consent, review the quoted conversion and charges, and authorize the transfer in the participating app.

This is different from paying a Nepalese shop by scanning a merchant QR code. The instructions below cover sending remittances to an individual, including what to do when your app is not enabled.

What the India–Nepal UPI–NPI service does

The linkage connects India’s UPI ecosystem with Nepal’s National Payments Interface (NPI) for cross-border transfers. It supports P2P remittances, so an India-based sender can send funds to an individual in Nepal through a participating bank app or participating non-bank third-party payment provider (TPAP).

The Indian Ministry of Finance described the mechanism as officially launched on June 6, 2026. Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL) issued its launch announcement on June 9, 2026, saying the service was live through selected banks. The differing announcement dates describe the same June 2026 launch; availability remains dependent on the institutions connected at the time you send.

What you need before starting

  • An account and UPI access with an Indian bank or payment app that has enabled India-to-Nepal remittances.
  • A recipient whose Nepal bank or payment institution can receive the cross-border transfer.
  • The recipient’s Nepal mobile number or VPA, exactly as registered with the receiving service.
  • Enough balance for the transfer and any fee displayed by your provider.
  • A phone capable of completing your provider’s authentication, such as a UPI PIN, device verification or another step.

NCHL says additional institutions are being added. A familiar domestic UPI app is not automatically a cross-border remittance app, so check the current participant list and your app’s own menu before promising a transfer.

How to send money from India to Nepal using UPI

There is no single screen sequence shared by every Indian provider. The following process reflects the common requirements confirmed by NCHL while leaving menu names and authentication to your bank or app.

  1. Confirm participation on both sides. Check NCHL’s current India-side and Nepal-side participant information, then verify in your own app that an India-to-Nepal or cross-border remittance option is available. Confirm that the recipient’s institution is enabled to receive.
  2. Open the enabled app. Sign in to the participating Indian bank app or non-bank payment app. Look for a label such as “Cross-border transfer,” “International remittance,” or a Nepal transfer option. Do not assume that the ordinary domestic “Send money” screen supports this corridor.
  3. Select Nepal and enter the beneficiary. Choose Nepal as the destination and provide the recipient’s mobile number or VPA when requested. Check every digit and character; an incorrect identifier can select another beneficiary or cause a rejection.
  4. Complete one-time consent. The UPI–NPI service requires consent from both sender and recipient for cross-border transfers. Your app may show a declaration during the first transaction. The recipient may need to accept a request or consent through their Nepal-side institution before the transfer can proceed.
  5. Enter the amount. Your app will show the amount you are debiting in Indian rupees and, where supported, the converted Nepalese-rupee amount the recipient should receive. Follow the app’s direction if it asks for the sending or receiving currency.
  6. Inspect the confirmation page. Before authorizing, verify the beneficiary name or identifier, debit amount, conversion rate or final currency amount, fee, and expected recipient amount. NCHL does not publish one corridor-wide India-side fee or exchange rate; the quote shown by your provider is the relevant one for that transaction.
  7. Authenticate and submit. Use the UPI PIN or other authentication method required by your provider. Save the confirmation screen, transaction ID and reference number.
  8. Confirm receipt with the recipient. Ask the recipient to check the credited balance or transaction notification. If the app reports pending, use the reference number when contacting your bank instead of sending a duplicate transfer.

The exact authentication screen, beneficiary fields and status messages differ by provider. NCHL confirms the channel types and recipient identifiers, not a universal Indian app workflow.

Which banks and apps can participate?

Participation is selective and can change. NCHL’s current India-side list includes Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, DBS Bank India, Federal Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, IDFC FIRST Bank, Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, IndusInd Bank, Karur Vysya Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Punjab National Bank, South Indian Bank and State Bank of India through BHIM SBI Pay. NCHL marks State Bank of India as enabled for both sending and receiving at the time of its listing.

Being named on a participant list does not guarantee that every channel or app belonging to that institution exposes the feature. A bank may enable only a particular mobile app, and a non-bank payment app may have separate corridor controls. Check the current in-app option immediately before sending.

NCHL’s listed Nepal-side institutions are Everest Bank, Global IME Bank, Himalayan Bank (receiving only), Machhapuchchhre Bank, Nabil Bank, Nepal SBI Bank, NMB Bank (receiving only) and connectIPS. “Receiving only” matters: an institution may accept India-originated funds while not supporting Nepal-originated transfers.

UPI–NPI limits, fees and exchange rates

India-to-Nepal limits

Source or provider Published India-to-Nepal limit How to interpret it
NCHL service page INR 200,000 per transaction Published corridor ceiling; no monthly limit is shown on that page.
Nabil Bank notice, June 2026 INR 200,000 per day Nabil’s own service-specific daily limit, not a universal rule for every participant.

These descriptions use different periods: NCHL states a per-transaction ceiling, while Nabil describes a per-day limit for its service. Your provider can apply a lower transaction, daily or risk-based cap. Treat the amount displayed in the enabled app as controlling and do not assume that a transaction under one provider’s ceiling will be accepted by another.

Fees and conversion

NCHL tells India-based senders to check their Indian bank or payment app for charges. It does not state a single India-to-Nepal fee or exchange rate for the corridor. The confirmation screen should show any service fee, the conversion used, and the recipient’s expected amount. A promotional description such as “affordable” is not a measured saving percentage, so compare the live quote rather than relying on a general claim.

The NPR 240 charge published by NCHL applies to Nepal-to-India transfers, not to an India-to-Nepal transfer. Do not add that amount to an India-originated payment unless your own provider explicitly displays it.

Do not use reverse-direction limits

NCHL lists Nepal-to-India transfers at up to INR 15,000 per transaction and INR 100,000 per month. Those limits apply when money starts in Nepal and must not be substituted for the India-to-Nepal ceiling.

P2P remittance versus paying a Nepal merchant

Nepal’s earlier UPI acceptance was primarily a QR-based person-to-merchant (P2M) service. An Indian visitor could scan a participating Nepalese merchant’s QR code and pay for goods or services. The June 2026 UPI–NPI linkage adds P2P remittances between individuals.

Use case What you are paying Correct route
Send money to family or another individual A person identified by a mobile number or VPA UPI–NPI cross-border P2P transfer in an enabled app
Pay a shop, hotel or other business in Nepal A merchant presenting a Nepal QR code Participating merchant-QR payment service

A merchant QR is not proof that the merchant’s bank account can receive a personal remittance, and a domestic UPI screen is not proof that P2P cross-border sending is enabled. Choose the function that matches the recipient.

Can you send to a Nepali bank account with UPI?

You can send to a person whose Nepal-side bank or payment institution participates in NPI receiving, but the app may identify that person by mobile number or VPA rather than by manually entering an account number and branch code. The receiving institution handles the Nepal-side posting. Ask the recipient which identifier is registered and confirm the displayed beneficiary before authorization.

If the recipient cannot provide a supported mobile number or VPA, or their institution is not enabled, the UPI–NPI route may not work even when your Indian bank is a participant. Use the alternative remittance channel described below or another regulated service that both parties can access.

What to do when UPI–NPI is unavailable: RBI’s INRF route

The Reserve Bank of India’s Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility (INRF) is a separate option. It uses the NEFT ecosystem, not UPI–NPI, and generally involves an NEFT-enabled bank branch rather than a cross-border button inside a UPI app.

Account-holding sender

RBI’s FAQ, updated September 27, 2023, says a sender who holds an account can remit up to ₹2 lakh per transaction through an NEFT-enabled bank branch.

Walk-in or non-customer sender

A non-customer or walk-in sender can remit up to ₹50,000 per transaction and is limited to 12 remittances in a year under the FAQ.

Nepal-side delivery

The FAQ says Nepal SBI Bank handles the Nepal side. Depending on the case, the money may be credited to an account or delivered in cash through Prabhu Money Transfer. Confirm the current branch instructions, documents, fees, exchange rate and delivery choice before paying because the published FAQ is from 2023 and operational procedures can change.

Choosing between UPI–NPI and INRF/NEFT

Decision point UPI–NPI INRF/NEFT
Availability Only participating Indian and Nepal institutions; app feature required. NEFT-enabled bank branch and the institutions specified by the RBI process.
Recipient identification Nepal mobile number or VPA. Bank/remittance details required by the branch and Nepal-side process.
Published India-to-Nepal limit NCHL: INR 200,000 per transaction; provider limits may differ. Nabil states INR 200,000 per day for its own service. ₹2 lakh per transaction for an account-holding sender; ₹50,000 per transaction and 12 per year for a walk-in/non-customer under RBI’s 2023 FAQ.
Delivery Digital credit through the participating Nepal-side institution. Account credit or, in specified cases, cash delivery through Prabhu Money Transfer.
Fees and FX Displayed by the Indian app; no corridor-wide India-side figure published by NCHL. Confirm the current branch quote and any Nepal-side charge.
Typical interaction App-based consent, review and authentication. Branch instructions and NEFT remittance procedure.

There is no public like-for-like fee or exchange-rate comparison establishing that one route is cheaper. Compare the amount debited, recipient amount, stated fee and rate on the actual quote available to you.

Common problems and fixes

The Nepal option is missing

Update the app, check that your account is eligible and search for a separate international or cross-border menu. If the feature remains absent, your institution or selected channel may not yet be enabled. Do not attempt to force the payment through a domestic UPI transfer.

The recipient cannot be found

Recheck the Nepal mobile number or VPA, including country format if the app requests it. Ask the recipient to confirm the identifier registered with their participating institution. A merchant QR or an unregistered number may not resolve as a P2P beneficiary.

Consent is incomplete

Both parties must complete the one-time cross-border consent. The recipient should check their Nepal banking app or notifications for a pending consent request. If either side declines or times out, start again only after confirming the required consent status.

The amount or fee differs from expectations

Stop before authentication and inspect the conversion, service fee and final recipient amount. Exchange rates and fees are provider-specific and can change between attempts. If the quote is unacceptable, cancel rather than authorizing and disputing later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The transfer is pending or failed

Keep the transaction reference, note the timestamp and check both account statements. Contact the sending provider through its official support channel. Do not resend until the provider confirms whether the first instruction was rejected, reversed or still processing.

The recipient has not received the money

Ask the recipient to check the receiving account or wallet associated with the exact identifier used. If the sender shows success but the recipient balance is unchanged, provide both parties’ references to the relevant institutions for tracing.

Safety checklist for cross-border transfers

  • Use only the official mobile app supplied by your bank or payment provider.
  • Verify the beneficiary name or identifier on the final confirmation screen.
  • Never share your UPI PIN, one-time password or device authentication code with the recipient or anyone claiming to provide support.
  • Make a small test transfer when appropriate and permitted, especially for a new recipient.
  • Save the receipt and reference until the recipient confirms credit.
  • Be wary of requests to pay a separate “release” fee to a personal account; rely on the fee shown in the regulated provider’s confirmation.

Key facts to check before pressing Send

  1. Your Indian bank or app currently supports India-to-Nepal P2P remittances.
  2. The Nepal recipient’s institution can receive through NPI.
  3. The mobile number or VPA belongs to the intended person.
  4. One-time consent has been completed on both sides.
  5. The amount is within the limit shown by your provider and the applicable NCHL or provider rule.
  6. The displayed exchange rate, fee and recipient amount are acceptable.
  7. You have recorded the confirmation reference.
