Use Laravel’s HTTP client to send outbound webhook requests; for incoming webhooks, expose a provider-configured endpoint, verify its signature, and acknowledge valid events promptly. Exclude only that endpoint from CSRF checks when the provider cannot send a browser token—CSRF exclusion is not authentication.

What a Laravel webhook flow needs

A webhook is an HTTP request one application sends to another when an event occurs. Sending and receiving are separate responsibilities: the sender builds and delivers a request, while the receiver authenticates it and decides what to do with the event. Retries can occur on either side, so design processing to tolerate repeated delivery.

Laravel’s HTTP client is a wrapper around Guzzle with support for common methods, timeouts, retries, and response inspection. It does not throw automatically for every 4xx or 5xx response, so check the response or explicitly use exception behavior. Laravel 13.x HTTP client documentation

Send an outbound webhook with Laravel’s HTTP client

For a simple sender, construct the request with the required method, destination, JSON payload, and headers. Set a finite timeout and inspect the result so the application can record delivery success or failure.

use IlluminateSupportFacadesHttp;

$response = Http::timeout(10)
    ->withHeaders(['X-Event-ID' => $eventId])
    ->post($destination, $payload);

if ($response->failed()) {
    // Record or handle the failed delivery.
}

Choose a retry policy deliberately rather than retrying every failure indiscriminately. If the receiver could perform a non-idempotent action, include a stable event identifier and have the receiver prevent that event from being applied twice. Laravel’s request retry controls are documented with its HTTP client; they are distinct from a webhook provider’s inbound redelivery policy. Laravel 13.x HTTP client documentation

When to use a dedicated sender package

Spatie’s Laravel Webhook Server can create and dispatch signed webhook calls. Its documentation describes JSON payloads, an HMAC-SHA256 signature in a Signature header, and package-specific retries after unsuccessful non-2xx responses, including attempts after 10 seconds and 100 seconds. Those timings are this package’s documented behavior, not Laravel defaults or a universal webhook standard. Review its current compatibility and configuration before adopting it. Receive a webhook safely

Expose the provider’s endpoint

Create a POST route at the URL configured in the provider’s dashboard. The endpoint must be reachable by the provider, and its path and method must match the provider configuration. For Stripe billing events, Laravel Cashier registers a webhook controller at /stripe/webhook and documents signature middleware. Laravel Cashier: handling Stripe webhooks

Exclude only the webhook route from CSRF checks

Third-party servers ordinarily cannot supply the browser session’s CSRF token. Laravel 13 documents excluding a specific URI using preventRequestForgery(except: [...]); Cashier’s Stripe guidance uses the stripe/* exclusion. Keep the exclusion as narrow as the provider route permits. Removing CSRF validation does not verify who sent the request: signature verification remains necessary. Laravel 13.x CSRF protection documentation Laravel Cashier: handling Stripe webhooks

Verify the sender’s signature before acting

Use the provider’s documented signature procedure, secret, and algorithm. Validate the exact request representation the provider expects; a generic HMAC implementation may be wrong if the provider specifies canonicalization or a dedicated SDK. Do not trust payload fields or trigger business actions until verification succeeds.

Cashier includes Stripe-specific signature middleware. For more general inbound webhook handling, Spatie’s Laravel Webhook Client provides configurable signature validation and route setup. Laravel Cashier: handling Stripe webhooks Spatie Laravel Webhook Client documentation

Acknowledge promptly and defer slow work when appropriate

After authenticating and recording an event, return a timely success response and move lengthy processing to a job when that fits the application. Spatie’s client stores incoming calls and supports queued processing; its documentation recommends a real queue driver rather than the synchronous driver for that workflow. A small, fast handler does not necessarily need a queue. Cashier can route received events to listeners, where the application implements its own domain behavior. Choose an approach by responsibility

Need Approach What to account for
Ordinary outbound request or small sender Laravel HTTP client Configure timeouts and retries, inspect responses, and implement signing or persistence if needed. Laravel documentation
Send signed events with package-managed dispatch Spatie Laravel Webhook Server Review signing, retry behavior, dispatch mode, and current Laravel compatibility. Package documentation
Receive Stripe billing events Laravel Cashier Use its Stripe-specific route and signature middleware, then implement application listeners. Laravel documentation
Receive multiple types of signed webhooks and queue processing Spatie Laravel Webhook Client Configure endpoint, validator, persistence, queue, and compatible package version. Package documentation
Receive Stripe events using Spatie’s receiver Spatie Laravel Stripe Webhooks Evaluate Stripe verification, persistence, event/job dispatch, and custom business logic. Package documentation

The options overlap. Choose one clear owner for receiving and processing each event type, and decide where signature validation, persistence, retries, and replay handling belong. The Laravel framework guidance here is for version 13.x; check package compatibility and configuration for the Laravel version in your application.
